Great video! One thing to mention is that DC Specifically named Spencer Ackerman and Evan Narcisse's "Waller vs. Wildstorm" miniseries from this year as inspiration for the Waller TV series. The story is mostly about Battalion, the former leader of StormWatch, maneuvering against a younger Amanda Waller, who works for Checkmate and runs Task Force X. I want a Batman like the one in Batman Universe. I think that’s the perfect contrast to Matt Reeves’ Batman. As for Superman: Legacy. I think it’s about what does Legacy mean? Can you live up to expectations? What happened if you can’t? How can you learn from people who have, what happens when you can’t match your own legacy you set for yourself? Lex will be representing that part and Superman will be representing the one where he meets the legacy of his families and that is what infuriates Lex who feels Superman is in the way of his legacy and goals. I feel like the theme of this new DC universe will be a refreshing blend of legacy, introspection, and hope.
Am I the only one who thinks that if all the DC stuff didn't pan out, Gunn could've been an amazing director of the X-Men? Like, modern X-Men aren't quite his speed but early Lee/Kirby and Claremont/Byrne era comics feel very in his wheelhouse
Recently i read Peter Milligan and Mike Allred's X-Men stuff (X-Force and X-Statix) and damn, James Gunn really missed out on adapting this series into a movie, it fits his style so well
Loved how in depth you went here and bringing in people to fill your personal gaps was a great touch! Look forward to seeing what Gunn does with this universe and I hope it’s great!
I agree with Nando's idea here. I assume in Authority movie the the earth will face an unstopable danger where there is no Justice league yet. The Authority will form and face it and at the end of the movie all(most) of them will die tragicallly but putting an stop to the danger. This will lead to Superman taking inspiration and initiative for a team of superheroes. Now there is a logical reason for the formation of Justice legue.
James Gunn is going to make quality and not content. I mean come on, a Green Lantern and Wonder Woman show described as DC’s versions of True Detective and Game of Thrones has me hooked.
@@kirylspence1190you’re right, eventually this will probably happen, but so far the castings have all been great, and let’s not forget that James Gunn was a victim of cancel culture
@@OwenLikesComics This video was far more in-depth than I expected! I loved the cameos from other comic-savvy RUclipsrs, too. 💯 I am a huge Batman fan and always laser-focused on any project he's apart of, so I'm a bit ill-informed on some of the other characters that'll inevitably show up in the new cinematic universe. This piece was a huge help. Thank you! 🫡
The thing that made that Grant Morrison Batman run work, though, was the Dick and Damian Batman and Robin team up. So unless they're starting off with a story that "kills" Bruce in this movie and then giving us Dick Grayson taking over/sharing the mantle in the next with Damian as HIS Robin, I just don't see it working anywhere near as well. That progression from Damian being a brat to even Bruce, to wanting his approval but not understanding why he wasn't getting it, to learning under Dick about things like trust and what it means to be Robin, to finally being able to try and apply what he learned to a partnership with Bruce... I'd give ANYTHING for that on the big screen. So as much as I want to be excited for this movie seeing as I loved the GM run and would love to see Damian on the big screen, DC has only ever seemed interested in burying the part I liked best in other media that included Damian.
I think the big justice league event at the end of all of this should be blackest night. I don't think gunn plans on using darkseid for a long long time, and blackest night/brightest day works really well for needing the whole league while still focusing on the lanterns. Through lanterns and swamp thing we can introduce the black/black lanterns.
I'm nervous about adapting Woman of Tomorrow, and fitting in enough of the adventures in 2 hours to fit in the emotional development. It's too big. We're too small.
honestly for me the only thing I am super concerned about with James Gunn universe is connecting the video games and animation to the movies which personally in my opinion worries me a lot because honestly I don't like the idea of connecting the video games to the movies because it feels like way to much and just feels like its going to limit the video game developers and eliminate great dc animated projects that people are actually enjoying but that's just my opinion. :)
@@TevyaSmolka well young Justice is already done for and MAWS will live under Gunn. I actually think their animated stuff needs a major overhaul because the tomorrowverse films have been absolute dogshit

Great video!! Hey Matt, I LOVE The Return of Swamp Thing. Shout out to the late great Dick Durock, who played Swamp Thing in the movies and 90s series.
I was thinking it would go down as Superman vs The Authority bc they'd go about justice by killing people and Superman would step in They battle it out and either he defeats The Authority or they sacrifice themselves for the greater good then Superman and whoever decide to create a new team, but one who doesn't murder
Woman of Tomorrow is drawn so good that the book should have been wordless. I like Tom King but the narration almost overtakes the pages at times and Bilquis Evely is literally a transcendent artist drawing the best comic anyone has ever seen with their own eyes
Hmm regarding the Authority, maybe James Gun will introducing them as the world's heroes in the established universe. Then, they die protecting the world in their movie which necessitates the need for the Justice League?
I think with the Superman movie we gotta see him as an infant on Kryton long before it explodes and well as see him in Smallville growing up. We gotta see the character grow on screen in order to gain a connection to them, and see them fall before they raise in order to relate to them. Marvel did it well for a good while
It has to do with the kind of stories that get to be told, and if you lose your eye on the ball, which is character,” continued Gunn. “We love Superman." I had a buddy who tried getting into “Normal” comic books but I was all like “No one is having s*x or killing each other . This isn’t really doing it for me”-Zack Synder
The range of the stories they annouced is really why i love dc over marvel its so all over the place from the years of buying random characters which doesnt make it feel stale, every marvel film is a "superhero movie" meanwhile with dc youll get a story about a plant man going to space about weird pychological stuff, you get batman and superman 2 traditional superheros, then you get green lantern fighting some intergalactic war in space and solving crimes, then you get wonder woman who is having some weird greek mythological stories, and thats kinda why wonder woman 2 failed it tried to fit wonder woman into the superhero films formula when in reality her stories are weird greek myths in fantasy lands, aquaman and shazam are like the 2 stories that understood where their place should be until shazam 2....
* Personally, I think Mark Waid's World's Finest book should be looked at as a template for the DCU. It's lighthearted and shows a wide range of well to little known characters. On a related note, Waid's "Superman: Birthright" has also said to be influencing Legacy (along with Geoff Johns' Brainiac arc). And given Grant Morrison is inspiring two DCU projects, I think they should look at the DC works between the two writers for future ideas. * One thing I think a lot of us would like to see: Wally West as the Flash. He's back as the main Flash in the comics and he was the Flash for a whole generation. It's time he got the spotlight. * Please just keep Tom King far far away from Booster Gold's show.
This is a list of books that i recommend for those future shows movies: - Superman For all seasons - Superman up up and away - Superman secret origin & Brainiac - Superman whatever happened to the man of tomorrow and for the man who has everything - Superman up in the sky - Apollo & Midnighter New 52 run - Stormwatch the whole series - Authority by Ellis and Millar - Swamp thing Green Hell - Swamp thing by Ram V - Swamp thing by Alan Moore - Swamp thing by Rick veitch - Green lantern secret origin - Green Lantern rebirth - Green lantern Hal Jordan wanted - Green lantern corps by Tomasi and Gleason - Green lantern by robert Venditti - The Terrifics whole run - Wonder Woman by George Perez - Wonder Woman by Greg Rucka - Wonder Woman Dead earth - Booster gold the complete 2007 series - Blue and Gold by Jurgens - Blue Beetle Jaime Reyes books one and two - Batman and Robin by Peter Tomasi - Batman zero year - Batman and Robin by Grant Morrison - Batman and Son - The brave and the bold lords of luck
Internet BMCs : This year's films are going nowhere! Reality : The films have - overarching story wise - headed nowhere since the JL debacle. Me: Oh, Cavill sucked. Get off the bandwagon, folks. Also Me: It is actually refreshing to have actors who look like the characters.
I think Gunn is a talent. I think he can make a good Superman film. My one issue with this vision is the existence of The Authority in this DC continuity. The Authority always worked better in the Wildstorm universe as a dark, perhaps slightly more realistic (at least in some respects) reflection of the Justice League. The Authority showed us what superhero comics might look like in a more grown-up world. Even though Apollo is a Superman-analogue, he isn't half-as-powerful, and therefore his ability to destroy is often as useful as his ability to save, when facing off against planetwide or multiversal threats. Am I happy The Authority is getting adapted? That remains to be seen. I only wish it would exist in a universe separate from the main DC continuity.
I always loved DC way more than marvel and I absolutely hated Snyder and can't wait for this. One nitpick though is that Luthor is my favorite comic book character of all time and I don't think that's the right pick.
As far as the authority is concerned, shows like invincible and the boys are arguably the most popular comic book tv media rn. I think they’re going to pit them against the justice league
Its honestly really sad that there has only been 1 single DC movie trilogy in the 21st century, just 1. Whereas Marvel comics have had atleast 15-20, (Blade, X-men Original, X - men Prequel, Raimi Spiderman, Holland Spiderman, Wolverine, Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and many others) How do we live in a world where in the last 35 years, we haven't ever gotten a Superman movies series, but blade or ant-man or Venom have. Warner bros just don't make that many movies for DC. 2014 and 2015 didn't have a single movie, whereas 7 marvel movies were produced. I get numerous studios owning the rights makes it easier, but still.
I thought it was very funny that the canon reason for the formation of the Authority was that xenomorphs, like from the movie Alien, came and killed everyone Ellis wasn't going to use.
I read Supergirl: Woman of tomorrow last week, and it really is that good. I think that's now my most anticipated of this line-up. Also, that Green Lantern comic sounds epic. I will have to check it out!
Brilliant video. I can tell a lot of effort went into this and it is appreciated mate. For some reason I’m just so fascinated with how James Gunn is going to handle this. What kind of film will it be because it has to be done right. Not like The Suicide Squad but a lil type bit similar to GOTG3. Am I the only one who thinks that if all the DC stuff didn't pan out, Gunn could've been an amazing director of the X-Men? Like, modern X-Men aren't quite his speed but early Lee/Kirby and Claremont/Byrne era comics feel very in his wheelhouse
Definitely see that
Absolutely! I could totally see a X Force movie by James Gunn.
Recently i read Peter Milligan and Mike Allred's X-Men stuff (X-Force and X-Statix) and damn, James Gunn really missed out on adapting this series into a movie, it fits his style so well
He's not working for disney again. Though he could work for Sony since spiderverse is his favorite comic book movie
Oh 100 percent in a what if scenario hed be great
Loved how in depth you went here and bringing in people to fill your personal gaps was a great touch! Look forward to seeing what Gunn does with this universe and I hope it’s great!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I could spend the rest of my life listening to Patrick Willems talk about comics very happily.
I love how excited comic book fans are about this new DC Universe, if it works properly it will be a beautiful thing to behold
Facts
It has the chance to do everything the MCU and DCEU failed at. The hype is definitely warranted
the Gunn cinematic universe will be distinct which gets me excited
James Gunn is going to make quality and not content. I mean come on, a Green Lantern and Wonder Woman show described as DC’s versions of True Detective and Game of Thrones has me hooked.
only a matter if time before they add woke stuff to it
@@kirylspence1190 grow up
@@kirylspence1190no one wants your b1g0ted ass here
@@kirylspence1190you’re right, eventually this will probably happen, but so far the castings have all been great, and let’s not forget that James Gunn was a victim of cancel culture
@@TheMastermind729”cancel culture” lmao. He was rightfully criticised for making utterly vile and depraved comments.
Exactly what I needed. Looking forward to this! 💯
Hope you enjoyed it!
Hope this new DCU works out. The most I’m looking forward to are Superman legacy and brave and the bold
I Love it 😊. I’d very much enjoy seeing more videos in this style, and more videos surrounding the new dcu.
In Gunn We Trust.
I'm nervous about adapting Woman of Tomorrow, and fitting in enough of the adventures in 2 hours to fit in the emotional development. It's too big. We're too small.
The avengers of comic book RUclipsrs have assembled. This was brilliant to watch
Owen my man, love your stuff. Keep up the good work. Also, I believe in James Gunn too.
I appreciate that!
honestly for me the only thing I am super concerned about with James Gunn universe is connecting the video games and animation to the movies which personally in my opinion worries me a lot because honestly I don't like the idea of connecting the video games to the movies because it feels like way to much and just feels like its going to limit the video game developers and eliminate great dc animated projects that people are actually enjoying but that's just my opinion. :)
What great animated projects are you enjoying right now exactly?
@@nalday2534 honestly for me it was young justice and that new Superman animated show and that’s about it.
@@TevyaSmolka well young Justice is already done for and MAWS will live under Gunn. I actually think their animated stuff needs a major overhaul because the tomorrowverse films have been absolute dogshit
@@nalday2534 well we are getting crisis on infinite earths 3 parts animated movie so maybe thing will change after that trilogy but we shall see.
Yeah, my brain is like, either it will be amazing and really suplement the movies, or it'll just be a plague of terrible movie tie in games like the early 2000s was rife with
Great video!! Hey Matt, I LOVE The Return of Swamp Thing. Shout out to the late great Dick Durock, who played Swamp Thing in the movies and 90s series.
It’s gonna be so refreshing to have someone in charge of dc movies who actually likes dc comic stories
I can’t believe it’s being debated. “Justice league vs the Authority”
that’s tonight sorted! cheers mucka!
Enjoy!
great job man on this comics inspiring James Gunn dc universe it was fantastic.
Couldn't agree more!
@@OwenLikesComics indeed :)
I was thinking it would go down as Superman vs The Authority bc they'd go about justice by killing people and Superman would step in
They battle it out and either he defeats The Authority or they sacrifice themselves for the greater good then
Superman and whoever decide to create a new team, but one who doesn't murder
Woman of Tomorrow is drawn so good that the book should have been wordless. I like Tom King but the narration almost overtakes the pages at times and Bilquis Evely is literally a transcendent artist drawing the best comic anyone has ever seen with their own eyes
I agree 2 many words which juxtaposes the beautiful art
8:25 holy shit it’s the guy who writes all the MCU movies
I think this is my 3rd time watching this in full already! 😂 Thankyou again guys!
You're the best!
Hmm regarding the Authority, maybe James Gun will introducing them as the world's heroes in the established universe. Then, they die protecting the world in their movie which necessitates the need for the Justice League?
Well, one of the storylines that I hope that they use as their in inspiration for the justice league is Grant Morrison’s JLA.
IN GUNN WE TRUST
I think with the Superman movie we gotta see him as an infant on Kryton long before it explodes and well as see him in Smallville growing up. We gotta see the character grow on screen in order to gain a connection to them, and see them fall before they raise in order to relate to them. Marvel did it well for a good while
It has to do with the kind of stories that get to be told, and if you lose your eye on the ball, which is character,” continued Gunn. “We love Superman."
I had a buddy who tried getting into “Normal” comic books but I was all like “No one is having s*x or killing each other . This isn’t really doing it for me”-Zack Synder
The Authority will be the current world's super team, in which Superman will emerge to challenge the way they do things.
This 💯
Reverse kingdom come, great way to go
All I want is the fight choreographers from captain America 2 to work on the brave and the bold. It’s finally time we see peak Batman
Wonder Woman 1984 has other issues as well...like her taking advantage of a guy's body.
Your very right but i feel like that is the least of that movies problems @@markanderson7236
All Star Superman was amazing. I’m all for a DC movie universe with that vibe. I don’t need a brooding Superman. I want an altruistic one.
In Gunn we trust!!
In Gunn we trust!
This is a list of books that i recommend for those future shows movies:
- Superman For all seasons
- Superman up up and away
- Superman secret origin & Brainiac
- Superman whatever happened to the man of tomorrow and for the man who has everything

- Authority by Ellis and Millar
- Swamp thing Green Hell

- Green lantern corps by Tomasi and Gleason
- Green lantern by robert Venditti

- Batman and Robin by Peter Tomasi
- Batman zero year
- Batman and Robin by Grant Morrison
- Batman and Son
- The brave and the bold lords of luck
21:37 I hope that the Swamp Thing movie is just the beginning of the Justice League dark. Please! Include Constantine, Zatana, and the like.
Nando v Movies is gorgeous
As a superhero fan, I've never this stoked for the DCU.
We need a Superman Birthright breakdown!
Can"t wait to superman: legacy
I just have to say, this video is freaking incredible. Thank you for this information deep dive. You are appreciated!
Glad it was helpful!
As far as the authority is concerned, shows like invincible and the boys are arguably the most popular comic book tv media rn. I think they’re going to pit them against the justice league
Fabulous. I love your content!
Thanks so much!
Kingdom come has a big inspiration for superman legacy
Damn...Owen, Nando and Drake are the first comments??? Almost every single person who I respect on one page? Wow.
Looking forward to Ryan Gosling playing wonderwoman.
I thought it was very funny that the canon reason for the formation of the Authority was that xenomorphs, like from the movie Alien, came and killed everyone Ellis wasn't going to use.
I wonder how Guy is going to tie into Lanterns, if at all.
I really hope he’s just not there to be an idiot and killed off.
Finding the correct balance is going to be a challenge and my only fear is that it’ll be a bit too goofy but I hope I’m proved wrong.
