The DC Universe is an upcoming American media franchise and shared universe based on characters from DC Comics publications. It was created by James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios. Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are well-known superheroes from this universe. The story of the DCU is divided into chapters, starting with "Gods and Monsters", which will begin in 2024 with the animated series Creature Commandos. Gunn and Safran consider the chapter's first film, Superman: Legacy (2025), to be the true beginning of the DCU.

This comment made me chuckle
Goat
You're awesome
Thank you for having me! It's always a pleasure to bust out my chair and talk about Booster Gold.
Booster is awesome
Booster Gold is the unsung Goat of DC.
I'm building a cosplay armor of his outfit.
You had the shortest segment
@@eastonenroth2366 I didn't know how long everybody else was going to take so I kept things brief so I wouldn't take up too much of everyone's time. This is Owen's video and I don't want to make it about me.
@@ComicDrakeseeing you in this video reminded me to ckeck up on your channel.
I'm subscribed to your channel and love your videos but for some reason they rarely pop up on my recommended.
Based on the premise, instead of Supergirl being sent to Earth she could have spent years roaming the universe and by the end of the movie someone mentions to her that they've heard of a Kryptonian on Earth, so it ends with a hook about her going to Earth to meet Superman.
I mean gun made a battle against a huge starfish pretty fun, I think he can find a way.
Hopefully this superman will be warm and fun.
I have the utmost faith in James Gunn and Peter Safran. I just hope that David Zaslav doesn't intervene too much.
I’m sick of him personally. Too corny
Same here.
Dc studios is a separate division so that ain’t happening
Hope in vain. Odds are he'll notice an actor or actress looking the wrong way in scene 12 at the 58th minute and immediately delete all extant copies of the movie, then claim a tax write-off. As is his wont.
Honestly, I don't know why anyone would work for his studio after what he did to Batgirl and Scooby-Doo.
good news, david zaslaf will not intervene because dc studios has become a seperate division. david will now just want for it to make money
The one project I'm most excited for is Swamp Thing. If Mangold gets to make it and follows Alan Moore's comics accurately, it will be an absolute masterpiece.
Bonus points if he gets back Matt Ryan as John Constantine.
Good lord, getting to see Matt Ryan's Constantine next to Swamp Thing would just blow up my darn brain with fanboyism@@jackmonaghan8477
Gunna need the popcorn tonight for this one boys
See what u did there
Whether the 10 year plan pans out or not, I appreciate this lineup JUST for finally giving a fantastic beginners reading list.
Usually it’s just a Batman movie and the director is like “yeah Year One and The Long Halloween were a big influence”.
I just love the fact that Gunn is going to jump over from year 1 of Batman all the way to Damian Wayne, we had those kind of Batman movies done to death.
@@Luchux177and considering we've already gotten countless Batman movies covering his early years and first introduction to villains, it would be a breath of fresh air for Batman to already be established with his Batfamily already running about.
We know that Dick Grayson will most definitely be covered in Matt's films so no need to compete with themselves on different versions of the 1st Robin.
I'm excited to see who they'll cast as the seasoned Batman, and for the 3 other Robins (Dick, Tim and Damien). I'm already assuming Jason is dead.
Still sad there is no flash
In Gunn We Trust.
There's the Superman and The Authority miniseries written by Grant Morrison. Might be used as a connectivity tissues for the movies.
I hoping James Gunn knows what he is doing it would nice to find a cinematic universe that beats out the MCU.
Competition is also such a healthy thing on both ends. Rivaling the MCU is going to drive DC’s motivation and if they start succeeding, Marvel will have to adapt instead of feeling so complacent.
@@nuh-uhbro765Civil War was only greenlit when BvS was announced
@@Johnny0lovely69Interesting, I always assumed it was the other way around.
@Johnny0lovely69 You told a fat lie without a credible source. You are probably one of those bitter Snyder stans who couldn't accept that Civil War was the better movie.
@@The.UsurperYou're gonna believe that guy with no credible source?
Tbh I'm really hoping that the first real crossover we get in the DCU isn't Justice League but a world's finest movie. I'd settle for a TV show but I really would prefer to get batman and superman teaming up (if it's a tv show maybe there's some extra guest stars for single episodes) before the full team
If they’re making a worlds finest project it would never be a show. Get realistic
It's great to see comics getting recognition as a source of inspiration for adaptations. Sure, some have appreciatied the source material before, while other times it feels like "hey look it's Avengers: Age of Ultron" when it has nothing to do with its original work. But, Gunn's approach to DC feels like a genuine love for the medium (nothing new from him) which gives me excitement and hope for both DC as well as the Comic Book and Movie Industry. Also, what a packed Collab. 👏🏻
The PARADISE LOST show should take inspiration from the following books:
-“Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons” by Kelly Sue DeConnick
-“Paradise Lost” by Phil Jimenez
-“The Circle” by Gail Simone
-George Perez’s Wonder Woman run
I can’t explain how anxious I am to see gunns reboot. I’ll miss Henry cavil and Ben Affleck, but the Snyderverse was a mess. A reboot is necessary
The way James Gunn seems to be carving out the DCU is giving me lots of hope. It's seems like its gonna be a thoroughly fleshed out universe and he wants to clearly imerse the audience into it.
Definitely looking forward to Superman: Legacy because James Gunn gives off a Richard Donner vibe in his statement. I'm also interested in Authority and Lanterns, but a bit more reticent in my anticipation.
Gunn only makes comedies hence his influence on the last 4 dceu bombs of the past year.
@@blackwulf8793 Literally all his previous projects as director have been major successes
The fact that so much of this new universe is completely based on the comics and it respect comics so much is a huge win for comic books. I'm very excited
Tbh whatever James does I’m with it, he has my trust 1000%
sure, but warner bros are gonna have their hands on this too. and they’re who we shouldn’t trust
@@brown-eyedcheese5440diff studio free from studio inference
I love how excited comic book fans are about this new DC Universe, if it works properly it will be a beautiful thing to behold
Facts
It has the chance to do everything the MCU and DCEU failed at. The hype is definitely warranted
My take about The Authority: it's going go full Rated-R in the violence department, and eventually, the justice league may form to knock them off their pedestal as the Superhero Team of Earth. They'll likely go to other worlds and become Stormwatch that will no doubt be a further lead into the greater threat Chapter One is set to introduce. Plus a JLA vs. Authority film could be the end of Chapter One of this multi-layered story.
The first thing I said after seeing Man of Steel was "why didn't they just adapt Superman for all seasons." If he mashes those two stories together right it's going to be amazing!
"There was an idea to bring together a group of remarkable people, so that when we needed them to discuss classic comics, they could do the movie speculation that we never could..."
I'm really excited for the DCU as a whole, but the concept of the Lanterns series is such an interesting spin on Green Lantern to me.
I think that the DCU Green Lantern Corp will be structured in a way that every sector has a duo of Lanterns, because people feel stronger together. It's harder to be afraid when you have someone watching your back.
James Gunn is going to make quality and not content. I mean come on, a Green Lantern and Wonder Woman show described as DC’s versions of True Detective and Game of Thrones has me hooked.
only a matter if time before they add woke stuff to it

@@kirylspence1190no one wants your b1g0ted ass here
@@kirylspence1190you’re right, eventually this will probably happen, but so far the castings have all been great, and let’s not forget that James Gunn was a victim of cancel culture
@@TheMastermind729”cancel culture” lmao. He was rightfully criticised for making utterly vile and depraved comments.
the Gunn cinematic universe will be distinct which gets me excited
I’m very excited for all these projects seeing that James is finding good directors and taking inspiration from amazing comics. Giving me Justice League unlimited vibes
Great video! One thing to mention is that DC Specifically named Spencer Ackerman and Evan Narcisse's "Waller vs. Wildstorm" miniseries from this year as inspiration for the Waller TV series. The story is mostly about Battalion, the former leader of StormWatch, maneuvering against a younger Amanda Waller, who works for Checkmate and runs Task Force X.
My guess is that they will use the Waller series to show how Amanda Waller outmaneuvers and kills StormWatch, leading to the Authority forming from the ashes of the previous team, though we will have to see how it all shakes out when the release order of these projects is clear.
You know they say that all men are created equal, but you look at me and you look at Comic Drake and you can see that statement is not true. See, normally if you go one on one with another wrestler, you got a 50/50 chance of winning. But I'm a genetic freak and I'm not normal! So you got a 25%, AT BEST, at beat me. Then you add Kurt Angle to the mix, your chances of winning drastic go down. See the 3 way, at Sacrifice, you got a 33 1/3 chance of winning, but I, I got a 66 and 2/3 chance of winning, because Kurt Angle KNOWS he can't beat me and he's not even gonna try!
So Comic Drake, you take your 33 1/3 chance, minus my 25% chance and you got an 8 1/3 chance of winning at Sacrifice. But then you take my 75% chance of winning, if we was to go one on one, and then add 66 2/3 per cents, I got 141 2/3 chance of winning at Sacrifice. See Comic Drake, the numbers don't lie, and they spell disaster for you at Sacrifice.
I can't wait for this new iteration of DC films, Gunn and Saffron have chosen very cool characters for their Gods and Monsters Phase.
That 2000s Booster Gold run was excellent. Always been a fan of him but that run made me an even bigger fan.
I'm excited for the future of the DCU overall. Superman Legacy is my most anticipated film and Brave and the Bold is a close second. As much as I liked Matt Reeves Batman, I'm hoping for a more fantastical, comic book style Batman for the DCU where we get to see more of his metahuman villains in their true forms (Clayface, Man-Bat, etc.).
IN GUNN WE TRUST
This was an incredible video, Owen. I’m honestly shocked at the amount of effort that went into this and the amount of guests you brought in. I have the upmost faith that James Gunn is going to deliver a really satisfying interconnected DC universe (studio interference none withstanding)
Am I the only one who thinks that if all the DC stuff didn't pan out, Gunn could've been an amazing director of the X-Men? Like, modern X-Men aren't quite his speed but early Lee/Kirby and Claremont/Byrne era comics feel very in his wheelhouse
Definitely see that
Absolutely! I could totally see a X Force movie by James Gunn.
Recently i read Peter Milligan and Mike Allred's X-Men stuff (X-Force and X-Statix) and damn, James Gunn really missed out on adapting this series into a movie, it fits his style so well
He's not working for disney again. Though he could work for Sony since spiderverse is his favorite comic book movie
Oh 100 percent in a what if scenario hed be great
In Gunn we trust!!
"The Authority" could be a refreshing change of pace for the big screen, as we haven't seen anything quite like it before. The Authority, inspired The Boys, and draws inspiration from both the Justice League and other comic series, introduced a diverse range of characters and concepts that are yet to be explored in comic book media. Imagine the storytelling possibilities that would arise from pitting Superman and other traditional DC heroes against these unconventional characters of The Authority. It would be a clash of worlds, a collision of ideologies, and a thrilling spectacle for audiences worldwide.
It’s gonna be so refreshing to have someone in charge of dc movies who actually likes dc comic stories
Wow, what an epic collaboration!
Great rundown of these stories. This has me very excited about the future of Gunn's DC Universe!
I agree with Nando's idea here. I assume in Authority movie the the earth will face an unstopable danger where there is no Justice league yet. The Authority will form and face it and at the end of the movie all(most) of them will die tragicallly but putting an stop to the danger. This will lead to Superman taking inspiration and initiative for a team of superheroes. Now there is a logical reason for the formation of Justice legue.
I can’t believe it’s being debated. “Justice league vs the Authority”
In Gunn we trust!
Thankyou guys! I’ve followed Nando, Owen & Drake since 2022, I love how many of my favourite comic book content creators have came together this year!
Hell yeah brother! what a quality video 🤩
What a juggernaut of a video, great job to all creators involved! :)
Glad you liked it!
Hope this new DCU works out. The most I’m looking forward to are Superman legacy and brave and the bold
I want a Batman like the one in Batman Universe. I think that’s the perfect contrast to Matt Reeves’ Batman.
As for Superman: Legacy. I think it’s about what does Legacy mean? Can you live up to expectations? What happened if you can’t? How can you learn from people who have, what happens when you can’t match your own legacy you set for yourself? Lex will be representing that part and Superman will be representing the one where he meets the legacy of his families and that is what infuriates Lex who feels Superman is in the way of his legacy and goals.
I’d have them be friends from a young age and Superboy blowing up Lex’s lab that was set on fire loosing Lex’s hair and his way of finding a new planet of life research as Lex feels he doesn’t fit in and is too different from Earth.
I want to see the relationship Lois has with Superman and Clark or if she already knows the secret.
Mark Waid said he isn’t a massive fan of a married Superman as he treats everyone equally, when he gets married and has a kid that HAS to change. I counter argue that and say that’s an excellent story that I think could be handled really well
I think the big justice league event at the end of all of this should be blackest night. I don't think gunn plans on using darkseid for a long long time, and blackest night/brightest day works really well for needing the whole league while still focusing on the lanterns. Through lanterns and swamp thing we can introduce the black/black lanterns.
8:25 holy shit it’s the guy who writes all the MCU movies
I'm nervous about adapting Woman of Tomorrow, and fitting in enough of the adventures in 2 hours to fit in the emotional development. It's too big. We're too small.
Nando v Movies is gorgeous
honestly for me the only thing I am super concerned about with James Gunn universe is connecting the video games and animation to the movies which personally in my opinion worries me a lot because honestly I don't like the idea of connecting the video games to the movies because it feels like way to much and just feels like its going to limit the video game developers and eliminate great dc animated projects that people are actually enjoying but that's just my opinion. :)
What great animated projects are you enjoying right now exactly?
@@nalday2534 honestly for me it was young justice and that new Superman animated show and that’s about it.
@@TevyaSmolka well young Justice is already done for and MAWS will live under Gunn. I actually think their animated stuff needs a major overhaul because the tomorrowverse films have been absolute dogshit
@@nalday2534 well we are getting crisis on infinite earths 3 parts animated movie so maybe thing will change after that trilogy but we shall see.
Yeah, my brain is like, either it will be amazing and really suplement the movies, or it'll just be a plague of terrible movie tie in games like the early 2000s was rife with
Exactly what I needed. Looking forward to this! 💯

@@OwenLikesComics This video was far more in-depth than I expected! I loved the cameos from other comic-savvy RUclipsrs, too. 💯 I am a huge Batman fan and always laser-focused on any project he's apart of, so I'm a bit ill-informed on some of the other characters that'll inevitably show up in the new cinematic universe. This piece was a huge help. Thank you! 🫡
Owen my man, love your stuff. Keep up the good work. Also, I believe in James Gunn too.
I appreciate that!
The range of the stories they annouced is really why i love dc over marvel its so all over the place from the years of buying random characters which doesnt make it feel stale, every marvel film is a "superhero movie" meanwhile with dc youll get a story about a plant man going to space about weird pychological stuff, you get batman and superman 2 traditional superheros, then you get green lantern fighting some intergalactic war in space and solving crimes, then you get wonder woman who is having some weird greek mythological stories, and thats kinda why wonder woman 2 failed it tried to fit wonder woman into the superhero films formula when in reality her stories are weird greek myths in fantasy lands, aquaman and shazam are like the 2 stories that understood where their place should be until shazam 2....
Wonder Woman 1984 has other issues as well...like her taking advantage of a guy's body.
Your very right but i feel like that is the least of that movies problems @@markanderson7236
I was thinking it would go down as Superman vs The Authority bc they'd go about justice by killing people and Superman would step in
They battle it out and either he defeats The Authority or they sacrifice themselves for the greater good then
Superman and whoever decide to create a new team, but one who doesn't murder
that’s tonight sorted! cheers mucka!
Enjoy!
I have been wondering when somebody would make a video like this, but never expected it to be so thorough with so many exceptional guests - bravo
Woman of Tomorrow is drawn so good that the book should have been wordless. I like Tom King but the narration almost overtakes the pages at times and Bilquis Evely is literally a transcendent artist drawing the best comic anyone has ever seen with their own eyes
I agree 2 many words which juxtaposes the beautiful art
Loved how in depth you went here and bringing in people to fill your personal gaps was a great touch! Look forward to seeing what Gunn does with this universe and I hope it’s great!

I Love it 😊. I’d very much enjoy seeing more videos in this style, and more videos surrounding the new dcu.
As a superhero fan, I've never this stoked for the DCU.
Great video!! Hey Matt, I LOVE The Return of Swamp Thing. Shout out to the late great Dick Durock, who played Swamp Thing in the movies and 90s series.
I actually cant wait
I love that most of the mentioned comic book influences are series that start in the middle of a hero’s journey (as opposed to an origin story), center around one hero passing down the costume to another, or even take place towards the end of a hero’s life. I feel like the theme of this new DC universe will be a refreshing blend of legacy, introspection, and hope.
The thing that made that Grant Morrison Batman run work, though, was the Dick and Damian Batman and Robin team up. So unless they're starting off with a story that "kills" Bruce in this movie and then giving us Dick Grayson taking over/sharing the mantle in the next with Damian as HIS Robin, I just don't see it working anywhere near as well. That progression from Damian being a brat to even Bruce, to wanting his approval but not understanding why he wasn't getting it, to learning under Dick about things like trust and what it means to be Robin, to finally being able to try and apply what he learned to a partnership with Bruce... I'd give ANYTHING for that on the big screen.
So as much as I want to be excited for this movie seeing as I loved the GM run and would love to see Damian on the big screen, DC has only ever seemed interested in burying the part I liked best in other media that included Damian.
I loved this !!! Thank you very much for this. I will pass this along
Please do!
I could spend the rest of my life listening to Patrick Willems talk about comics very happily.
Love everything you do, man!! Fantastic video.

Looking forward to Ryan Gosling playing wonderwoman.
I just have to say, this video is freaking incredible. Thank you for this information deep dive. You are appreciated!
Glad it was helpful!
* Personally, I think Mark Waid's World's Finest book should be looked at as a template for the DCU. It's lighthearted and shows a wide range of well to little known characters. On a related note, Waid's "Superman: Birthright" has also said to be influencing Legacy (along with Geoff Johns' Brainiac arc). And given Grant Morrison is inspiring two DCU projects, I think they should look at the DC works between the two writers for future ideas.
* One thing I think a lot of us would like to see: Wally West as the Flash. He's back as the main Flash in the comics and he was the Flash for a whole generation. It's time he got the spotlight.
* Please just keep Tom King far far away from Booster Gold's show.
This was great thank you Owen
Glad you enjoyed it!
I think this is my 3rd time watching this in full already! 😂 Thankyou again guys!
You're the best!
I think with the Superman movie we gotta see him as an infant on Kryton long before it explodes and well as see him in Smallville growing up. We gotta see the character grow on screen in order to gain a connection to them, and see them fall before they raise in order to relate to them. Marvel did it well for a good while
The avengers of comic book RUclipsrs have assembled. This was brilliant to watch
This seems cool
All I want is the fight choreographers from captain America 2 to work on the brave and the bold. It’s finally time we see peak Batman

Hmm regarding the Authority, maybe James Gun will introducing them as the world's heroes in the established universe. Then, they die protecting the world in their movie which necessitates the need for the Justice League?
Its funny how one of the best things the MCU has done was to indirectly conceive a legit DC cinematic universe. Thank you Disney 👌
Wild storm,s is probably like finally someone is making a movie of are carathers
And I ,m calling the DCU the NDCU
And also I think Robert Downey Jr should play Deadshot
Well, one of the storylines that I hope that they use as their in inspiration for the justice league is Grant Morrison’s JLA.
Brilliant video. I can tell a lot of effort went into this and it is appreciated mate. For some reason I’m just so fascinated with how James Gunn is going to handle this. What kind of film will it be because it has to be done right. Not like The Suicide Squad but a lil type bit similar to GOTG3. Finding the correct balance is going to be a challenge and my only fear is that it’ll be a bit too goofy but I hope I’m proved wrong.

Owen, great video, but i think that you should talk about just only comics to begin to read with this new reboot, i mean it doesn’t matter who the actors/actress are, what really matters it’s the inspiration of those future movies but you just only mentioned the basics, i mean Authority movie read Ellis and Hitch run and it’s enough, Superman legacy read All star Superman and Superman for all seasons, i mean there’s a lot of good books to start to read Superman if you want to be ready for the new movie not just only the obvious one, Swamp thing movie just read Alan Moore as if that’s the only Swampy run to begin with, well anyway, great video overall
