what is a good quantity of fertilizer? i use 3 table spoons of 20-20-20 mixed with 2 gallons of water. I also add a bit of urea to it. I apply this twice a week. is this a good method or should I be doing something else?
Thank you for sharing your experience. I have a question on pollination. Do you leave the vine alone to pollinate it own, or do you pick the male flowers and tap the pollen off to the female flowers?? I do this technique with pumpkins, and just wondering if its the same.

What year is your Dodge and how many miles? I've got an 01 270,000 miles , still runs like a champ. They made those 2nd gens to last.When it craps out, I'm going to look for one with low miles again. Mine had 74,000 when I got it.
No, I have seen viable seeds come from a 30lb melon, just let it sit for a while, and the seeds mature inside the melon. Kinda strange how that happens

Do you directly water the trunk of the plant, or do you run a sprinkler so that all the leaves get sprayed? Hey Scott, My plants are getting that much water, but yours may not need that much. Its tricky when people talk about water, because we all have different soils My soil is set up to drain fast, melons like to be moist, but not wet. If your heavy clay, you might not need to water but once a week. Grab a sample of soil with your hand and squeeze it, if it falls a part, you may need to water, but if it stays in a ball, you are good. I do not ever water overhead, and never water the stump. I use pvc pipes with small holes, and stay 3-4 from the stump.

You can grow just as big of a watermelon with compost rather than chemicals, if you use some organic pest control and fertilizer why not go all the way so you can actually eat your fruit you spent so much time and love on ?
+ I users about 16 yards of compost, use 90% organic ferts, use garlic spray, but some things you have use use chemical for. Squash bugs and cucumber beetles are the 2 that will end a season fast!! Even with harsh pesticides, I still lost a plant this year, and half my cantaloupes last year. Different for a farmer that grows many acres, compared to only having 4 plants.

I'm just not sure how long it takes for them to be ready and not be on the vine so long they start to rot. I've got one that set on around July 12 and OTT weight is around 120lbs and the other set on July 22 and OTT is around 85.
Timing is tough, when melons get over 50 days, I start to measure every 5 days, and keep track. Healthy plants should grow 80-90 day melons, just don't pull them if they are still growing! Pick them when they stop. I had a vine go down in 2014, and lost the melon at 65 days, I pulled melon and weighed it, then put it in the house with the ac, kept it there for 6 weeks, and it only lost 12lbs in 6 weeks, not too bad. 120lbs at 30 days is Awesome!!
Good to know that info. I got a plant growing from a 274 Kent and the 350 Kent both open pollinated by my 4 hives of bees less than 100 yards away. Growing them in Traphill NC and can only get up there on weekends so I spend most of the weekend messing with the vines. That acreage we have up there had alot of moonshine history so maybe they growing so well because 50% of the soil is moonshine soaked, lol.
The watermelons are edible but we grow them pass their maturity date and then drive them around for two weeks showing them to people. They would be much better to eat if they were picked two weeks earlier not kept so long
What's the point of going through all that trouble and expense if you don't consume the product, not to mention you're poisoning the ground with all those chemicals. You must have a lot of time on your hands.
That soil looks beautiful not a rock in it, you could grow anything in that black humus. I have heavy soil in my garden so any vegetable with fine roots, even carrots will not do well. The organic compost is as good as gold for what you are doing. Watermelons must be susceptible to a lot of viruses to have that aggressive a spray program. Has anyone been successful trying to grow watermelons using Organic Gardening.?

I use several male flowers, and brush the pollen unto the female in the morning, then covet female with a cup for 24 hours to keep the bee's out.

No, I have seen viable seeds come from a 30lb melon, just let it sit for a while, and the seeds mature inside the melon. Kinda strange how that happens
