Usually the first watermelon given out is false and I would remove that one above all else. I believe this is true for other vine plants at the very least.
Are you sure? I asked ChatGPT and Gemini and they both said that if you want more good watermelons you should do it, but if you want a big single one, you should do the opposite. Again, I am not a gardener.

I put an old white pillowcase over my watermelon. Still grows like crazy, but the pillowcase helps to prevent splitting. Thrift stores have lots of old white pillowcases. lol ....
You should add a gentle rotating fan to blow on the seedlings in order for them to grow tougher stems.
Splitting often occurs from inconsistent watering.
Yeah you need to water them like crazy.

i find spraying the actual watermelon with hot wax helps it from cracking and prevents pests

geesh, your soil is beautiful, I have pretty hard clay and I try to loosen it every year by adding organic material but its still like a rock just a foot down.
Try "No dig gardening "
We had a hard clay back yard - It took us 5 years of working at it - mostly with compost and tilling - to get a productive garden. Now it'll grow anything.
Mine too, I ended up buying a rototiller and mixing a lot of compost, it is a lot better but it took almost 10 years.

My input: The cotyledons (seeds leafs) are supposed to sit on top of the ground instead of rising above it. Next year if you start them inside again (a good idea) make sure when you up-pot it that the cotyledons (seed leafs) rest on top of the potting soil.
I always plant a few extra seeds just in case some dont germinate, then I thin them when they start to grow if they all sprouted.
My grandfather grew all,sorts of stuff and when he grew a 'bumper' he grew 2 on the plant and shaded them so the sun didn't get to them. He used a chair that allowed some, but very light though. He also watered the heck out of it and planted fish heads and guts near it at tne start. He woukd prune the small melons and composted them. He let them get to about 6 inches. More melons eant more time in grow mode. After 7 days, they got trimmed. He also would sprinkle wet mud on tne water melons mixed with gelatin so it stayed put. He grew 6 giants a year, over 45 pounds for our July 4th party. They could get bigger but they were grown for purpose of a giant family gathering and bonfire.
When I sprout seeds indoors in the spring time, I have very intense lights. I gets the lights right up to the plants as close as possible without touching to get a strong thick stem otherwise, you get tall weak shoots like you experienced. Love this content!

I know people are used to cutting off the bad part and eating the "good" one. But actually molds and rotting bacteria are very carcinogenic and usually they get the whole fruit since its immune system is already weakened. Shame but I also stopped eating the "good" parts xd

try selecting one that is symetric, with a good shape as a start to reduce the chance of uneven growth and splitting.
Check Jacks videos from GrowJack Outdoors he's a 15 year old that has grown some really large watermelons like 180 lbs. He shows the process he has used cradle to grave.

you should protect the watermelon from the sun, put it some shade (only it, leaves should be in the sun). Also it is a good idea to grow it on the of the manure pile.
I love this type of content (don’t get me wiring I love the mouse traps) but the garden, fishing, hunting and trapping bigger game with always be my favourite
I've got a giant bell pepper last year it was 80% rotten but the seeds, oh man, they're my whole next season. Awesome purple Giants.

I would leave 2 or 3 of the largest sprouting watermelon just in case some turns out to be rotten/crack. I believe there was way too much fertilizer for that one single watermelon hence grew too fast too quick then crack. Leaving two or more watermelon on the vine would balance out the fertilizer
My old man used to grow Charleston variety watermelons when I was a young boy, such great memories and nothing tastes better than home grown
Next time put up something over the fruit to shade it and prevent sunburn, maybe even build a box around it for protection
Is that what recording breaking watermelon growers do? Cut off all but one of them? Interesting tips gardeners have. A friend of mine's Mother grew tomatoes and she would crush up Tums into powder (antacid) and that takes acidity out of the tomatoes you grow. Man I wouldn't have guessed 79 pounds.

I'm curious, does abrading the seed and then soaking it in water mimic the natural process of a seed going through the digestive tract of an animal that might eat them and spread the seeds naturally?

Hay that's a change of pace. It's hit and miss with watermelons . My 12 goats & sheep and my flock of chickens love them my potbelly pig did too. She passed away last November she was about 10 years old.

Look up the subject of blossom end rot on tomatoes - and it appears to be the same condition here. Watering and mineral deficiency issues.

Years ago I just planted a seed from a watermelon in my tomato garden. It started to grow but some varmint took a bite out of it when it was still the size of a golf ball. I don't know how you keep that from happening other than putting a cage around the fruit.
I keep cats expressly for that reason.
Also try a cover crop before planting to help with weed control

Watermelon plants are vines along the ground. Don't worry about it laying down.

I grow lots of watermelon every year in florida, I dig a small pit and dump some rotten wood, compost and fish or old bait, old meat like wild hog that isnt worth eating. Then back fill the dirt you dug and plant on top. The rotten wood holds moister, the meat breaks down and feeds plant over time, I also throw a little kelp meal in the pit for minerals. I grow "Florida Strawberry" variety and the average melon is 25lbs. I've gotten some 40lbers, one was 36" around. Don't think I'd want giant ones, you'd had too much to cut up at once! lol The pits keep my melons going without any attention.

Cool! thanks for showing this. You know the wierdest place I saw a water melon grow? On the beach, in the wet sand, not far from the shore! It was at Honeymoon Island in Florida. Somebody was probably eating watermelon at the beach and dropped a seed. The water melon was about 3 times the size of a mango. I did not try to eat it though! 😂 Not sure how good a water melon would taste exposed to fishy sea water!
For giant pumpkins they put a tent over the fruit to keep the rind from hardening. I wonder if that would work on a melon?

Me I would NOT File down the Edges of the SEED, I think Filing the Edges down HURTS the SEED.🐄🐄 Also I think you should have several plants you can let one plant grow more then one watermelon on it, I would try it, and it looks like you have room. It would be worth it, I think. Hey Shawn. Try grafting the watermelon on a pumpkin. This should give bigger watermelons. I tried it myself and I got amazing results. You'll easily get 200 lbs or more

Planted watermelon one time. Had a perfect one growing and a dang gopher drilled a hole through the bottom and ate it out. Was so disappointed when o went to harvest it :(

I hope that you make more videos like this and the tomato one. But I would call them a success only if you make a good dish with the product and eat some. In this case, not a sophisticated dish, just eat some of the watermelon and see if it tastes sweet.
