    Wow! Didn't know they drydocked the Pampanito. As a Bay Area native, I've always thought this thing was super cool. Stayed overnight onboard as a cub scout when I was little. I'd heard that it was actually operational (engines could run and it could drive around on the surface) but I never got any confirmation on that. Very cool to see the torpedo tube doors operate.

    • @jimlearned588
      @jimlearned588 3 года назад +2

      The number one engine does run, but she has no props. On memorial day they run the engine after the Memorial service and then let the audience tour the boat with the engine running. It gives you a whole new perspective about diesel engines and the enginemen that maintain and operate them! Two engine rooms, two engines each at 1600 horsepower each, gives you 6400 horsepower and 24 miles per hour surfaced.

      Every precaution is taken to make them as quiet as possible but they still make a distinctive sound when opening/closing. Generally not much more than 10-15 seconds between opening the shutter door, outer tube door and launching the weapon. Leaves only enough time to bend over and kiss your keester bye bye :) As a former Submarine SONAR operator I've heard my share of this during training exercises. And it's nowhere near that loud when things are properly maintained.

      Gary Martin that’s so cool! I’m doing ROTC for either the Navy, Army or Marines (yes I know I gotta decide quick) I’ve always wanted to be a submariner and command one but I’m 6 foot lol. What was your experience? In a small recap lol

    • @garymartin6987
      @garymartin6987 3 года назад +2

      @@tommygun2491 Small recap: Tight, cramped conditions (walking down a passageway your shoulders would touch both sides) with absolutely no access to the outside world for up to 90 days at a time. Not enough racks (bunks) to allow each crew member his own, therefore 3 men shared 2 bunks (one was always on watch). It was literally week upon week of sheer boredom, broken by the occasional passing Soviet SSN, SSBN or surface craft (more than that is classified). At 6ft you would not be able to stand up straight without hitting your head. Although the Navy dispensed with the height limits back in the '70s. Until then it was 5ft 9in maximum. But even with all that I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. Submarine crews are more family than anything else. "The Hunt for Red October" is considered something of a comedy in the Submarine world.

Five yrs later, as I left town, city council said, "We do not want this city's name associated with a United States ship of war." And, despite Feinstein having obtained 15 mil $$$ in museum refurbishment funds from Congress, SF said "screw you" to the WWII generation due to their hatred of "W." @Johnston Steiner Stern torpedo tubes are highly useful. Generally speaking, you don't want to have to charge your target in a sub. These make sense if you really think about it, because you can line up an attack vector, and fire forwards, then withdraw, while also being able to shoot yet more torpedoes. That's very good unless you intend to use your own submarine as a large torpedo.

      She is not technically from SFMNHP but is owned by the Museum Association. Pampanito is about as original and operational of a WWII sub as you will find. When this was taken they were replacing some corroded parts and doing preventative maintenance. Granted, not perfect but she has engines that work, mostly operational. Her fire control systems were restored by a friend of mine who said it was so cool to run it and have the last firing solution come out. Now the other ships that are part of SFMNHP are in much worse than when I was a volunteer there bu they've been worse. The volunteer program does so little and there is not the money or professionals working on the ships today. Thankfully neither Pampinito or Jeri were hurt when C shed burned down not 50' from them. This brief video was from her last haul out. I got to go on a tour. Pretty cool to see out of the water. CA Thayer was mostly rebuilt below the waterline and above a few years ago, Balcultha's hull plating was replaced below the water line again just a little while ago. That leaves Eppelton Hall, Hercules, Eureka, and Alma for the larger craft. Alma is in fine sailing shape and not rotting as far as I know. Hercules is getting closer to full operational shape though I don't know how she is below the waterline. Eppe will likely never see much restoration. Eureka sadly is in bad shape and it seems like yesterday, on her 100th she was in fine shape but ships really do take almost as much money and work at rest as at sea.

      @@jhorn64 that may have been true in WW 2 but these days you flood the tube prior to opening the outer door.

      The outer rectangular sliding square door is only to make the shape of the sub as smooth as possible. As you can see from the video, it has no rubber sealing surface and so is obviously not waterproof - it doesn't need to be. Behind the rectangular outer is the circular torpedo tube muzzle door. If you look carefully, you can see for a few seconds that this has a rubber seal around the edge. The muzzle door does make a perfect seal and can withstand the external water pressures well in excess of the submarines crush depth. The torpedo tube also has a breech door that can be opened inside the sub in order for the crew to load a torpedo. To ensure that rust doesn't disturb the perfect seal, the entire tubes plus muzzle/breech door assemblies are all made of non ferrous metal alloys such as bronze and have high tech chemical resistant rubber seals. A complex mechanical interlock prevents the breech door from being openned when the muzzle door is open, since it would not be a good thing if it was possible to open both doors underwater! Here is a closer look at the torpedo tube doors plus photos of the operating mechanism www.thaiwreckdiver.com/lagarto.htm - the seals are still good even after deacades underwater.

      They did a fair amount of work on her. They never seem to have enough money for more scheduled haulouts so they cram in as much maintenance as possible. I got to tour her while she was on the floating drydock which, by the way, is a WWII concrete dry dock also owned by the association that owns Pampanito. Wish we had done that with my school or scout troop. I had to grow up to find the time to visit. Spent my volunteer time on the ships at SFMNHP instead but this ship would have been my second choice. If you still live within traveling distance check it out. Did you hear about the fire that took out the historic shed next to the ship? Awful but the ships are safe.
