    That ship is incredible. I took a tour of it when I was a kid in the early 2000's. It's a wonderful thing, well worth the drop into San Francisco to see it.

    The SS John W Brown in Baltimore, was launched on Labor Day, 1942 from the Bethlehem Steel Fairfield Shipyard. She is restored and sails the Chesapeake Bay.

    Idk how they say it's the only Liberty ship fully functional because you also have the ss John w brown Liberty ship that visits and docked often in Baltimore i been on it twice ,

      She isn’t as sea worthy as the O’Brien. The Coast Guard would not allow her to return to the beaches for the Normandy Anniversary and only issued her a coast wise certificate of inspection.

    My 16 year old dad was assigned to a brand new liberty ship, the USS Deimos at in early 1943. They went up to Pittsburg Ca and loaded ammunition for Guadalcanal. He had his 17th birthday on his wayto

      New Caledonia. They then went to Guadalcanal to deliver bombs and ammo at Henderson Field. There , they and several other liberty's and LSTs were bombed and strafed by Japanese aircraft on June 15th, 1943, off Lunga Point. They were later torpedoed, along with the USS Aludra and sunk off San Cristpbel Is. Both ships were AKAs. The Deimos was AKA 78 and the Aludra was AKA 72. My dad was later assigned to the USS American Legion and landed troops at Bougainville.

    I don’t think there was much to be concerned about with the O’Brien because she’s made of steel and unless she had flammable stuff on her deck I think she was safe from the fire

    • @WesleyHarcourtSTEAMandMORE
      @WesleyHarcourtSTEAMandMORE Год назад +3

      Radiant heat, with the water curtain, was enough to blister the paint. Without the water curtain it would have likely been enough heat for the steel (a great conductor) to conduct the heat to the tons of flammable materials inside the ship.

    Funny how they were careful not to show the bare breasted sailor girl painted on the top front bow. It’s a fun cute image probably reminiscent of a ship’s historical figurehead.

      Well, at the time JO'B was launched and outfitted, the crew thought the ship would serve in the Pacific.
      Unfortunately (or fortunately) they were wrong...
