Thanks for posting that. I ALWAYS wondered how that door system worked. Seems like it operates with the opening of the outer cap for the torpedo tube. I always thought it was a separate operation to open the hull door and then the outer torpedo door.

Interesting. The warhead and the remainder of the torpedo could be loaded in the hatch separately.

Early ww2 models had hand cranked doors. Had to slow down or it was a huge bitch to open.

It got scraping marks on it, guess someone ran into the boat or it hit something. That should be the reason for the scraping.

Hey! The USS pampanito balao class submarine. Just visited her about 2 years ago in California. And she's amazing. Too bad I didn't get to see her torpedo tubes opening

Wow! Didn't know they drydocked the Pampanito. As a Bay Area native, I've always thought this thing was super cool. Stayed overnight onboard as a cub scout when I was little. I'd heard that it was actually operational (engines could run and it could drive around on the surface) but I never got any confirmation on that. Very cool to see the torpedo tube doors operate.
