Here is a short video of the USS Pampanito's Forward Torpedo Tube #1 outer door opening during drydock at Bay Ship and Yacht. All 10 tubes on the submarine's outer doors are being exercised during the drydock period

    Thanks for posting that. I ALWAYS wondered how that door system worked. Seems like it operates with the opening of the outer cap for the torpedo tube. I always thought it was a separate operation to open the hull door and then the outer torpedo door.

    Early ww2 models had hand cranked doors. Had to slow down or it was a huge bitch to open.

    It got scraping marks on it, guess someone ran into the boat or it hit something. That should be the reason for the scraping.

      The door squeaked because it was old dry metal. If it was wet and underwater it wouldn't make such a creak.

    Wow! Didn't know they drydocked the Pampanito. As a Bay Area native, I've always thought this thing was super cool. Stayed overnight onboard as a cub scout when I was little. I'd heard that it was actually operational (engines could run and it could drive around on the surface) but I never got any confirmation on that. Very cool to see the torpedo tube doors operate.

      The number one engine does run, but she has no props. On memorial day they run the engine after the Memorial service and then let the audience tour the boat with the engine running. It gives you a whole new perspective about diesel engines and the enginemen that maintain and operate them! Two engine rooms, two engines each at 1600 horsepower each, gives you 6400 horsepower and 24 miles per hour surfaced.
