When I made a video where Japanese people react to anime English dubs, many people were unhappy because I didn't use "good" dubs. So this time, I'm using some "good" subs that my audient suggested.

- Bepop
- Ghost Stories
Also, these are the kind of anime that isn't really popular with the average Japanese people, and they take place outside Japan (except Ghost Stories). So it would make sense that the characters don't speak Japanese.

Well it's still some insight though as most japanese people are unlike for example the dutch used to having their movies and series translated insted of watching something in the original and reading subtitles and that skews their viewpoints of course. So most won't understand the discussion between people enjoying the subs vs those enjoying the dubs.
I prefer english dubs because i don't understand japanese and dont want to read subtitles regardless if the dub is good or bad. Would be interesting however to learn japanese and rewatch some of my favorite animes in their native tongue and compare.

No I think their opinion is completely valid. Most people who aren't into foreign films/television don't like to watch something in a different language.
It depends on the kind of insight you're looking for (or more formally stated, the purpose of the study) and consequently the way the question was framed to the interviewees.
If you're interested in a social insight into the Japanese anime-watching demographic, or the wider Japanese media-consuming demographic, about English dubs _in general_, then it's useful to know that some people prefer the Japanese purely because they can understand it and that they're not thinking about emotion/acting/timing or other considerations. You get similar in the English-speaking world, where some people prefer dubs because reading subtitles takes away from enjoying the media to them.
If your interest is in understanding how people perceive quality of acting in English vs. in their native Japanese, as a counterpart to the argument that English speakers prefer the Japanese because they can't tell bad acting as easily in a foreign language, then those girls' answers were beside the point-but I don't think that's the question Yuta was posing them, I think he mostly just asked them broadly what they think.
Some of these people didn't understand the point.
It's not which is easier to understand, it's which sounds better.
I think they meant emotional wise.

I never realized Cowboy Bebop wasn't popular in Japan, given it's popularity with western audiences. Steve Blum as Spike (and Mugen) is about as iconic as it gets for me, as far as dubbed anime voice acting goes. Even if it isn't what came first, I think it would be hard for me to imagine any other voice for those characters.
Well, it's been about 20 years. How many good (or even great) shows from 20 years ago do most folk watch?
I think maybe it's because the Japanese in the video are so young? Or their into-anime-levels' are not that big? Well, dunno

Yes. Actual scientists definitely agree with you that there is value in repeating surveys. In fact, there's a huge problem in science with surveys, experiments, and other sorts of reasearch not being repeated enough due to publication bias. Obviously this channel isn't quite the same as science, though.

I always think it's interesting when Japanese people say an anime character looks/sounds Chinese or Korean. I wish I could understand their perspective and reasons for deciding those things.
I guess it's along the lines of Westerners being able to identify whether someone looks Italian or Irish. If you're around both frequently enough, you know they're not the same, and can pick out small differences.
I've never really been able to see it in an anime character, but I'm not frequently exposed to stylized expressions of Chinese or Koreans to know what a stereotypical drawing of a Korean or Chinese person looks like. Though, I'd imagine it'd be similar to a Westerner seeing a cartoon character with dark slicked back hair and a pencil mustache and going "He's Italian" or a tall thin redhead and thinking they're Irish.

I love how civil they are about dubs and the original. They try to look for the good in either of them. And the ones who didn't care about which sounded better, and just cared about watching it in the language they can fully understand, is pretty much how dub watchers feel. I can respect these people. They don't go out of their way to bash the other like most sub watchers do.

I'm an anime fan that likes both Japanese and English dubs. There are certain animes that I prefer the English dub such as Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Dragon Ball, Yu Yu Hakusho, FLCL and that's because I grew up watching the English dubs. I also like the English dub of Black Lagoon.
I gotta watch Code Geass dubbed.
Yeah, Black Lagoon's English is pretty solid overall. Out of all of those, I'd say Cowboy Bebop works the best in either language, just because of how diverse the people of the setting are.
Cowboy Bebop in Italian was pheomenal too, I would never switch it for anything else even though I do know pretty much every language received a fair work regarding the voice acting of this one.
I'm glad someone else appreciates Black Lagoon dubbed! With such a diverse set of characters, you get alot more out of it with the dub. Much like Baccano dub did as well.
I like some anime English-dubbed over the JP counterpart too. FMA (Full Metal Alchemist) comes to mind as one. God, I love that anime. @.@
The girls preferred the Japanese dub 100% of the time, for basically the same reasons I've heard people who prefer the English dub 100% of the time. So it was both sad, but relatable. Some people don't want to be forced to look at the screen, or aren't good at reading fast, or don't want to "not understand" the audio.
The others were more mixed, and it was interesting which parts they felt were "more emotional" or more easily relatable in Japanese vs English. To me, Black Lagoon felt equally solid in either language. For Cowboy Bebop, I wonder if they have a bad impression of the lady in the clip, as she speaks English, but with a Latin American type of accent, which probably didn't carry through at all. Showing them Ghost Stories was hilarious, though I was disappointed that they didn't seem to catch on to the significant changes in the script.

cowboy bebop only really blew up thanks to Adult Swim otherwise it would've been another obscure 90s anime
When anime first started being dubbed we didn't have a guide on how to dub it properly so you ended up with a bunch of different qualities, Cowboy Bebop was literally one of the first high quality dubs that helped write the guide.
MrDankie Also, unlike today, they recorded on analog tapes rather than digitally, so if they wanted to do another take, they’d literally tape over an original take and just gambled that the new take would be better.
The sci-fi channel aired anime before then and they were dubbed properly.

I see a lot of them looking at each other for approval of what to say when answering your questions. Some of them were even trying to influence the others answers by saying "I think this one is better right?" Its not honest. The two guys were more open with opinions but still had some of the same problems with answering as the others. I think its strange to look to someone else for your own answers. This is a cultural difference I have noticed.

Why would they? Goku is an adult male. It makes absolutely no sense why a grown adult male with two children would sound like an elderly woman.

@@Squidward-jv7go Yeah. It's like when we hear a different dub company do the same show with different actors. It just doesn't sound right. This was covered well in Yu Yu Hakusho Abridged.
There was a scene in black lagoon were rock was speaking both English and Japanese in the English dub.

Thank you for giving Baccano some love. It's probably the most unknown great anime in existence, and deserves so much more than it gets.
Baccano is an incredible show. It does make sense! You just gotta watch the whole thing.
It makes sense for people to prefer it in the language they understand. I can't keep up with subtitles and it's easier for me to connect with the characters if I actually know what they're saying.
I'd like to see Japanese people's reactions to American cartoons in English and Japanese and decide which one is better.

@@theflamingfreezer8478 imo because of the different styles of humor. American humor is more agressive and direct, at times forced i.e. the laughtrack in older sitcoms, while Japanese seems vague, and somewhat more natural. I dont think an adaptation like that would be compatible with the Japanese audience. Thats the gist of it I got from the first three episodes Ive seen so far

Honestly, I thought the pacing of the speech was really choppy. It was as if they were stepping on every word to make it match the lip sync, which made it sound unnatural. The other ones, the voices flowed more naturally in their sentences.
I knew it, it seemed familiar.

Probably they didn't really care much about it, or were not grasping enough of the English to form a coherent opinion?

Sai Kaushal in Japan, the age range for Shinchan is 5-10 years old. In the US, it’s broadcast on a channel meant for R18 audiences.

Shin Chan's original manga was actually for adults. Then they created the anime version which was a kid's show (so they didn't include or toned down adult humour.) But the English dub of the anime isn't really a kid's show.

Even though I don't speak japanese at all, Steve Blum put some much variety in his voice for that one clip while the japanese version just sounds a bit monotonous throughout. Just one of the many reasons why Cowboy Bebop is such a good show dubbed.

Goofy Goof well in Japan maybe, but there are a lot of people in the west which like to watch it subbed. I think it’s more about authenticity. Anime is from Japan so you watch it in Japanese. For me at least and there are exceptions like ghost stories.
Nothing wrong with watching an anime in a language you understand. Anyone who says otherwise is biased. it's basically a matter of opinion.
"Most" is definitely an assumption. Many people prefer authenticity of the work over making it easier to understand. That's not just the case with anime and Japan either - for example, my country dubs basically everything they get their hands on, but watching American movies in the original dub is still very popular to a lot of people because they want to see how it was envisioned originally.

I used to watch things dubbed, but now I understand that every language and culture has their influence on the mediums that they make. And it's especially true for anime tbh. At least that is what I think.

It seems the same. People like the English dub because they don't understand japanese and don't want to read and watch. I prefer the original dub in most cases; but there are a few that I actually prefer the English dub, because it seems to better match the characters and/or environment...

I take it all on a case by case basis. I'll often start with the Japanese dub because that's what's available first, which does kinda skew things a bit for the English dub. When you're accustomed to something, something else has to be better to win.

@@Rezzmari Basically the anime flopped in Japan (a bit of an overstatement I guess, but it didn't do as well as they had hoped) but they had already given the rights for an English dub. They basically told the English dubbers to do whatever they could to make sure it did well in the west, so long as the characters' names and the general plot stayed the same (the story is based on traditional Japanese folklore, so they didn't want that shat all over). The English dubbers completely ditched the script and dicked around, and this is masterpiece is the result.
Its the worst and most disrespectful dub i ever heard. It totally changed the writers intention. If i were the creator i would have sued the whole US for that abomination.

I wish Boku no Hero Academia English dub ver. were in the video. I think the English dub of BnHA is one of the best. I'd like to see Japanese people reactions to it, maybe when you make another similar video?
And maybe you may also include English dub ver. of Dragon Ball. 🤔 I like the English Goku's voice better. I want yo know what others think about it too.

I think the Cowboy Bebop example was great, but I think it'd be more interesting to see how they feel about "good" dubs of shows everybody knows, stuff like Dragon Ball Z.
It seems like nobody was focused on the skill of the voice actors though, everyone just picked the language it looked like or Japanese because they understand it.
Im sure its a cultural thing that outside Japan have both a pool of Japanese dubs and English dubs to pull from to compare. where they probably dont have that same pool to pull from.
i've always listened to skill. it's why i prefer english subs in most cases. there are occasional english dub exceptions. black lagoon is good. series like english dub ghost stories and samurai pizza cats work because of factors behind the english voice productions.
English proficiency isn't that high and they tend to just be in a confused state listening to it unprepared.

Exactly. Her and the girl pair were like polar opposites... The pair just seems clueless until the very end where they appropriately indicate that Ghost Stories is the best dub, while the one lady is nuanced and understanding throughout until the end where she makes a truly ignorant statement.
Seems the Baccano dub had the worst reception in dub of the 4 you showed which is ironic because it literally takes place in America, so objectively speaking its the most suited to the anime. Baccano has easily one of my favorite anime dubs
It takes place in America, but they were right about it being super Japanese styled. Isaac and Miria are prime examples of this, and it's little coincidence that they're also among the worst voiced in the dub.
@@Gorgod69 How is it in any way japanese stylized? Isaac and Miria are a comedy duo, Japan didnt make up that concept. There is nothing inherently japanese stylized about Isaac and Miria or any part of Baccano. In terms of English voices, they were among the best of the cast
@@daze3x87 It's Japanese styled because of how the characters speak, act, and conduct themselves. Baccano is nothing like an American drama or cartoon. Isaac and Miria being a "comedy duo" isn't the Japanese thing about them, it's their hugely exaggerated manner of speaking and referring to each other, which was not carried over well in the English dub at all and if you think their dub portrayal is anything other than complete rubbish then I don't know what to tell you.
@@Gorgod69 There is nothing about how any of the characters conduct themselves that is japanese stylized at all. Their manner of speaking wasnt just carried over well, it was carried over fantastically. Baccano is well regarded as one of the greatest anime dubs of all time, and that is because it is. If you cant see that, maybe that is on you

Most of them commented on what they understood rather than what sounds better. Black Lagoon for example, I thought was miles better in English, especially Rock's VA

2:01 REALLY? omg I live in the US and this dude lives in Japan, jesus we really have different ideals. I thought Japanese had more emotion and feel to it than English dubs. IMO most English dubbed anime sounds half-assed... DBZ is an exception.

I agree with the guy. That's why I like English dubs more. They have emotion in their voice. Japanese is just one constant drawl of vowels and overly high-pitched females.

Voice acting is much bigger and more professional in Japan, otherwise I don't think ANYONE would bother with subs, LOL. I'm so used to subs sometimes I forget what version of an anime I watched.
Briar Gimpman I don't see why anyone would bother using any non-Japanese voice acting, even for things not originally made by Japan.
Depends on the anime. It is more rare but some anime have better dubs than subs. Kill la Kill, Log Horizon, and Magical Index are good examples but there are much more. Ghost Stories is actually quite an interesting situation. The anime completely bombed in Japan. When we were given permission to dub we were also given complete creative control over it. We managed to turn the anime to a somewhat renowned comedy anime. This is as opposed to original which was a serious ghost anime that was a pain to watch.
@@1good100 I know that the producers of El Hazard the Magnificent World prefer the English voice cast over the Japanese.
If memory serves me right the creator of Black Lagoon has said that the English dub is cannon, or something to that effect. Which makes sense considering most characters are American.
Personally I prefer English dubs primarily because I'm not a very fast reader, so I often have to pause to read what is said and that can be rather immersion breaking. Another thing, especially if the dub is good is you can interpret the emotion better. A lot of subtlety is lost when hearing a foreign language you don't understand.
I also don't mind if the dialog is changed from the original to suit a foreign audience. I find this especially true for comedies. A joke meant for a Japanese audience might not hit as hard, or make sense to a foreign audience. For example I find most Americans find the English dub of Hetalia funnier than the Japanese because the English dub makes jokes Americans are able to get.

I actually cannot believe the language that was used in the English dub for the anime with the cat stuck in box, I never would have thought I would hear such harsh language in an anime. It defiantly was surprising.

The anime is called “Ghost Stories” and the original run of the show BOMBED, in Japan. So much so that, when it was handed off to the US to dub, they were given the freedom to do whatever the hell they wanted. The characters are drastically different and the dub has a more improvisational feel. They took it from a boring anime and turned it into something hilarious.
I've watched Cowboy Bebop 100 times, both dubbed and subbed. I honestly think the English dub is superior, the characters have appropriate dialects and accents, and the sound design was improved. But, I would watch it either way, because the anime itself is amazing.

The reason we think ot sound smoke emotional is because we don't know what their saying. Factually it's always more emotional in the language you spoke first. I learned English first so dubs for me all the way I learn some Japanese back when I was homeschooling I can't speak it or read it but understand what people say. And it let me tell when it all sounds the same Emmotionally English dubs also have better records voices because better tech. But that's my opinion. But seriously if it has a dub in your 1st language watch it in that dub. As you will be lost the emotions won't grab you and so on. As you don't know what they say
Well me as a German, who grwe up with Pokemon, Dragonball etc. German Dubbed still liked the Japanese Versions more. All Anime I watch today is japanese dubbed with english or german subs.

It was in the west because of the aesthetics and the setting, while in Japan there were other bigger anime at the time and we didn't have that many dubs in the west, that's why I loved a channel by the name of Locomotion which had uncensored and subbed anime at night (past 8pm), and then during the day dubbed, censored and the same episode twice a day of every other anime they aired.

The english dub with the added humour was really funny. I'd say it's good, you get the best of both worlds, if you want to watch it the way it was meant to be watched then you can watch it with subtitles and original dub.

As a Swede, the only natural way to watch anime is in Japanese. I grew up with Pokemon and sailor Moon dubbed in swedish, quite nostalgic, but I would never watch anime dubbed in my or any other language today.
Somehow it seems like Americans, Germans and Spanish people in particular prefer it dubbed. Not sure why tbh.

I think when we hear a language different than ours, a lot of the times we think that it sounds more expressive because we're not used to hearing it... I wasn't too surprised when a lot of them said they preferred the english dub, but it certainly didnt match my answer because I find japanese dubs more intrigued to listen to.

I know 4 languages (including Japanese) and this is simple not true. You don't need to know the language to be able to tell if voice acting is good or not.
Also, original is always objectively better, because original voice actors are picked and directed by original creators so they always sounds and act like they should and like they were created/written.

You should learn to know the language, though. We have things called timing, enunciation, and all of the nuances of delivering a good line and all would be lost if you don't speak the language. If you are really a Japanese speaker, you should know this. Otherwise you're a troll.
Some of my friends who are Japanese speakers also switched on watching dubs because they don't like how Japanese voice actors often overact with their roles. That's bias on your part. Because one is already helpless when you try to watch anime without any text at the bottom of the screen.

Unless your first language is Japanese. Otherwise countless intricacies in the language and culture, meaning references in script included, are flying way over your heads. This makes the notion of preferring the sub actors "for the original intent" laughable.
One major downside is that you don't understand their syntax since it is entirely different, meaning the tone you're inevitably aligning with the text you're reading isn't matching up. This greatly reduces the reliability of even basic tools like volume recognition. Doesn't matter if you can hear that they're loud if you've no idea what part of the sentence is actually being spoken that way. This is one example of countless intricacies.
Dub fixes this and also allows you to focus on the show more.
Also, don't make pointless generalizations such as "dubs are often lazy and subs are often more passionate" because for one, they're generalizations, and two, you can't speak on the quality of voice acting in a language you aren't fluent in, let alone one foreign to you, and let well alone discerning any finer points of conveyance like specific emotions.
I am not an anime fan, but I adore Ghost Stories. The English dub is fantastic, as far as entertainment goes.
To me, the Japanese version is always better, as Yuta said, they were written in Japanese, so they work better this way.
I prefer watching content in the original language to enjoy it in the way it was originally designed, animes I only see in Japanese, american movies and TV shows I watch in English and in the case of La Casa de Papel, I watched in Spanish. But for languages I'm not used to, as in The Rain TV show, which is Danish, I prefer English.

Erick Dias Originality itself is meaningless. Japan is just better at voice acting, no ifs or buts about it. All those things you mentioned that aren't originally in Japanese would indeed be better with Japanese dubs than with their original voices.
Bebop's dub is the best vs the original. It's well known the jp voice actors botched many takes because of unfamiliarity and strict schedules
I don't have strong opinions about any of them other than Cowboy Bebop. That series draws so heavily on American influences that it feels most natural in English.
I'm from Denmark and I usually always watch the original with just English subs. Japanese is a wonderfully expressive language and so many Japanese voice actors are extraordinarily skilled at delivering emotional and moving performances. I don't understand the Japanese language fluently yet, but the voice inflection of the Japanese voice actors usually makes it easy to understand what the characters are feeling. Only a few shows and movies have better dubbed versions IMHO.
Dan Forget originality; Japan is just better at voice acting. If you watch anything that's not originally in Japanese, you should watch those with Japanese dubs.
@@theflamingfreezer8478 : Part of the issue is apparently process - by my understanding, they actually give folks time to practice in Japan, while in America they apparently tend to receive the script when they get to the studio... except that bit parts are worse, because they apparently often get hired while in the studio for something else.
I personally think that the Japanese are better with the more emotional moments that often are pinned to anime (Shonen powerups, Sad scenes, etc).
How I do prefer dubs because when I go to those more dialogue heavy shows it's easier to follow for me and I can more easily identify the voices (as in I could connect the voices easier to someone I know in real life. It's also harder for me to pick out the nuances in the Japanese sub)
But if no dub is available (like with Jojos part 5) I'll watch sub and rewatch later.
I was going to agree with the girl who said Anime is made from Japanese and doesn’t need to be dubbed in other languages for the American people to understand. But, that’s very ableist because people who are blind might want to hear one of these good stories and they’ll NEED it dubbed.

Well, you might be right on certain exceptional Anime, but your argument fails to stay objective when it comes to normal Anime, where there's an incredibly high amount of Japanese Influence. Maybe you don't want to accept it, but most anime are supposed to be Japanese.
I disagree 70% of what you said.
*Most* anime takes place in Japan, with Japanese characters speaking Japanese and eating Japanese food and doing activities only Japanese people normally do. Now if it was an anime that does not take place in Japan (e.g. Baccano, Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon etc) translating it to the countries in question, or even an international audience, makes sense.
But watching english dub in an anime that takes place in Japan with characters of Japanese name is simply annoying as fuck, ruins the immersion of the setting, and words often times gets lost in translation. Just imagine this entire quote *in english* : "Hey Yamato, let's go to Mitsuki's house in Hakodate and hang out around her kotatsu while eating oyakodon." Half that sentence is Japanese or Japanese-sounding names and words that do not have an English equivalent in dub, and at that point you might as well make the whole damn thing in Japanese.
I agree that anime should be spread to other countries, but I disagree that anime studios should go out of their way to make anime convenient for other countries. Imagine yourself being Russian, and imagine that same sentence above in Russian language. It would still likely be half Russian and half Japanese words. The best compromise is subtitles.

For the black lagoon clip I feel you should have used some of Revy's engrish scenes. In the anime, people are supposed to know multiple languages and the character Revy has some pretty terrible English. I feel having that to compare might have changed the mind of even the girls that strictly only liked the Japanese versions.

Yeah the two girls were a poor choice. They were basically the equivalent of someone saying they prefer watching dubbed anime cause they cant understand Japanese or read subs, which is missing the point. Its about who's the better actor, at least in my opinion. I prefer subbed anime most of the time, but hearing Black Lagoon in Japanese made me laugh, it was so bad.

The 2 guys are very wrong about Black Lagoon looks pretty Japanese, in fact most of the cast are western foreigners (gaikokujin) and it did have good english dub that match the anime international atmosphere (english conversation fits more). Aside from rock the only japanese guy there is very little japanese flavour in the anime even the incidents mostly happened outside of japan. (I still watch the sub version to learn more japanese tho)

People who have their own language dubbed tend to favor them over other languages due to the fact that it relates to them easier and is easier to understand; Americans tend to assume that the Japanese versions sound better because it was where the anime originated from and because the VA's are "better" in general in Japan.
I feel when the Japanese people prefer the English voices it's usually so matter of fact like, "Idk I just like it better" and it has nothing to do really outside of that.
Whereas Americans tend to swear by the Japanese performance > English one despite the English one being just as good.
All in all glad you showed the video. I don't think sub>dub elitism will stop until the next generation of people grow up on dubs as a norm and realize that both have pros and cons and can be appreciated equally.

I was thinking I'd love to see a similar video about reacting to Anime Italian Dubs, as especially till the 90s and start of the 2000s all anime were dubbed and many of them with really high quality of voice acting and translation. Also the Slam Dunk national dub here in italy is sort of legendary, imagine the Ghost Stories dub, even more over the top but staying coherent with the show's original story. The only downside of it is that it's got so many local wording and swearing that if you can't speak italian you'll never get how idiotically fantastic it is (and that saddens me a lot)

Working on being able to watch raw anime. I'm in that funny in-between point where I can understand some words or simpler sentences without the subs, but there's so much that still goes over my head that my attention is constantly divided between listening and reading. I often try to read the subs as fast as I can before the dialogue ends, and see if any words I'm expecting appear in the conversation, or if I can predict the entire sentence (sometimes I get it right!. Actually, I do the same with these interview videos.) Basically, watching anime in Japanese these days mostly involves a lot of pausing and sitting with my Japanese dictionary in my lap. 😆
I study vocabulary every morning using an SRS deck, and I cannot tell you how helpful it is being able to apply the words I'm learning to some kind of context. It's so helpful to be able to think back and say, "Oh, yeah, I heard this word in this one anime scene, or from one of Yuta's videos. (Song lyrics are also excellent for this! I've caught myself singing in an attempt to remember on many an occasion😳.) Looong way of saying thank you. Thank you very much for these videos, Yuta 😊

It's all a matter of preference. Dub and sub are the same, the only difference is that if a person doesn't understand the other language, that seems superior because he/she can't identify the faults in that language. And you should have left the two girls as they didn't understand the question properly. The language one doesn't understand seems more expressive because they DON'T understand it, that's the bottom line.

Subs all the way. While there may be some good dubs out there they tend to suffer consistency issues on pacing and inflection by voice actors. I suppose it only follows that media made by Japanese artists is best understood and relayed by Japanese voice actors.

By extension so many people think subs are better because they not only dont speak japanese, but dont understand the language. So much so they only listen to a dubbing to confirm their own bias that they don't like dub because to follow suit.
Imagine what the English VA for All Might would sound like if he read his lines in the japanese with a Kansai dialect? Would you even be able to recognize what a Kansai dialect sounds like?

I think another reason to learn Japanese proper for raw anime is not having to focus your attention on subtitles. Those can detract your attention from the finer details of what's going on screen.

Some things just don't translate over well, like puns (Pokemon S&M), rhymes (Zombieland saga dub didn't even attempt the rap scene because of this most likely), various speaking rules, and the length of each language.
Keep in mind they also try to match the lips flaps in combination with keeping up with the dialogue (English is often a "longer" language in a sense). This is so that you dont have a case where you hear a voice but no one's mouth is moving. I don't think this is an anime dub thing though... this most likely is a standard within general American (Or western?) voice acting (notice in cartoons how the movements of the lips will almost always realistically match what the characters are saying).

If you think those changes are bad, you haven't seen what "Battle of The Planets" did to Gatchaman. I mention that whenever someone says something bad about a translation or adaptation.

I personally dont trust companies like Funimation to make a quality dub. i dont want to invest alot of time into something then figure out it was a inferior product the entire time. And then i have to go back and redo the entire thing.
