younger people of today will never get a sense of what a watershed moment this was in time. Up until this series there was nothing to parallel the fusion of music, coolness and outstanding videography. I have never forgot the day that I saw this particular scene, knowing that I had stumbled upon something special, that was revolutionary for its time.
Well, I was born in 1994. In 2013 I was 18 and finished my high school. Before the University I had 3 months of holidays.
During this 3 months I watched whole Miami Vice serie with mind blown. I felt like alien because my peers were watching bulshit produced by nowadays tv and I stuck with this 80's show. Learning many things, getting to know a lot of wonderful music, simply feeling like time spent with it is not waste of time at all. I remeber being 18 and how much this call to Caroline hit me.
I am from Poland, this show was played here around 1995-1998 propably. Years after it was produced. I was also imaginating how my dad felt while watching Ferrari Testarossa and Sonny making a call while driving - watching it in gray post-communist Poland.
I disagree as a youngster! There are young units like me which love this show and gets emotional because of it!😃

One of the coldest, coolest scenes ever shot. And whoever picked this song deserves a raise.
Michael Mann. "Despite never taking a directorial role on the series, Mann went to great lengths to ensure the show was aesthetically appealing and, more importantly, visually unique. His simple instructions to the production team insisted that "no earth tones" be used. Mann personally researched the Miami area for shooting locations and to capture the lifestyle of the city, and many dilapidated Art Deco buildings were restored and repainted to fit the shots he called for. As a result of Mann's intense work (and his sense of neo-noir), Vice shot into the Top 10 in the summer of 1985, during the reruns of its first season. "

Arcades, Cartoons, Music, Movies, Nintendo was at its height. SRV and Bill Hicks in their prime and tearing up clubs. Michael Mann was in my graduating class, 1960 Amundsen high school, Chicago. No weren't friends.
When he passes on, there should be a statue of him in Miami Beach. This show revitalized that neighborhood into the upscale neighborhood it is today (before the show, that area was high crime and run down).
The same man who gave us one of the great crime epics of all time:Heat.
Unfortunately he didn't direct any of the TV episodes, only executive produced the show. Would have loved to see him direct a few though.

From the epic music to the telephone booth, the hairstyles, the neon, these four minutes encapsulates the 80s like no other. It’s art in itself, too: tension, perfect pacing, long shots, perfect angles, little talking and big emotions… This defined an era, the entire show in fact.

80s was just the pinnacle of everything. The end of the golden era
One of the most badass moments in cinema history
A lot of commenters have brought up different elements of this scene. Let me put it together for you guys. This is the moment where Crockett and Tubbs become the badass partners we all know. Up to this point Crockett hadn't wanted to believe anyone in his department was crooked...but it was the case. It hurt even more that the dirty cop was his own former partner. A man he had trusted, considered a brother above all else and the fact he would sink so low hurt a lot. Tubbs didn't want to be right...but he was. That slight look he gives Crockett at 0:27 says "I feel your pain, and I'm sorry. So I'll stand by you through this whole mess. I'll watch your back if you watch mine." Neither of them needed to say anything else. The trust was there. And Crockett, so torn up by what his former partner had done, called his ex-wife to see if that was all fake too. Not to mention if he didn't walk away from this alive, he wanted to find some closure and do his job without any further regrets. Crockett lost a lot, but he gained a friend who had his back for five years, and knew Tubbs would walk beside him through hell itself. And this translates to real life people. Even if you only have one friend you trust above all else. Sometimes that's all you need. They are a treasure and should be cherished as such. That's how I see it. Enough Said!
Read your comment and re-watched this video for that look Tubbs gives Crockett. Excellent observations and insight. Tremendous acting! And, a personal comment, loyalty like that is a rare commodity these days...
Well said and articulated.
@@fcmovies True Loyalty is a very rare commodity anymore. If you have at least one truly devoted friend. Then consider yourself extremely lucky. Treasure them.

The music, the show, Crockett calling his ex, the 80's era.
I remember when the Vice came out. My pops would come home from work, beat and tired. He'd shower, grab a Miller light and head to the couch. Mom would be cooking dinner for us. Pop would yell, "babe, it's on". Mom would run in with dad's plate, and sit next to him. I was young, so I'd probably be playing with my toy guns, imitating tv. Or chewing on a chicken drumstick.
I vaguely remember the episodes ,but I was there when they aired the 1st time.

This scene is highly symbolic, the direction, the actors, the music and the overall atmosphere gives a timelessness. It is transcendental, beyond the limits of the series itself.
This show is almost 40 years old (goodness) and a lot cooler than anything on tv today.
Simple, it is because BEAUTY was glorified back then, and now uglyness is. All this trying to change the human soul, how low can those in power go? They won't change me though, forever beautiful, if not outside, at least inside. What reminds me all the beauty that Don Johnson had and how it contrasted with Philip Michael Thomas because, Philip Michael had his beauty in his eyes! We always have to remember to be that who we dream, no matter the wrinkles, if not our looks, then our behaviour. Another good example was Castillo, how tough and rough and yet how sweet he was inside! All of these things tell you how the arts in those days were focused in goodness, no matter how bad things were.
Great way to put it

So true. Most shows today make me turn off TV after some minutes because they are boring and repetitive. 80s and 90s shows like Miami Vice make me watching reruns even 4 o'clock in the morning.

If you don't get goose bumps during this scene, well, you weren't a fan.
The twin "thumps" of the shells is an iconic moment.
Everything about this scene was absolutely perfect. Television as an artform peaked during this 4 minutes. From everything but the music and the shotgun loading being silent at the beginning to how steady the camera was at the start and how shaky it got toward to the end to echo their confidence turning to anxiety, this 4 minute scene held more emotion and gravitas than some entire films. Brilliant is a gross understatement.
You know I never caught the camera thing . Holy shit man good eye . Its really shaking the last scene of the hood shot while driving . And now that you pointed it out , well it makes this that much more awesome . And we thought shit was gonna go down and the prick Calderon got away, which actually makes it better . In other words you’re rooting for them but they are let down , just like real life . There’s a video on here from the director and how they came up with the song and the scene , really interesting . And I suppose you could say I was lucky , got to watch it the night it premiered in 1984. This was THE SHOW of the 80s .

I've had a similar experience with this song
Ended up in some run down bar with this one guy I knew, drank a few too many, talked with him about life, and just tried to catch up with everything. He did time in prison and was just set free, I was back in my hometown after many years of working abroad, no family nor friends to talk to. So we were there just talking like, "how is life? yep, haven't seen this place in years either"
After we finished our last drink, we sat in the car, turned the radio on and this song comes on first. We were both just sitting there like these two guys, pure silence and this song blasting on the radio as the car just drives along the empty, lonely freeway. You could feel how broken we were at that point. Crazy, and confusing times those were.

The timing of pauses between phill colins lyrics and Caroline lines is amazing . Not a single word overlap... Editing of this scene is top notch.
Not only that, but the lyrics interact with and serve as subtext for the dialogue. “Well I remember…” as she thinks back to answer his question. Amazing.
Sorry but the words do overlap
Still great tho
They overlap, but yes, FANTASTIC!!
Phil Collins is an ICON
Miami vice is an Iconic 80's T.v show
And this song is an Icon as well... one of the best songs ever made! Pure classic ... still listening to it in 2023 . Nothing like the 80's
I remember watching this scene when I was a teenager and we all looked forward to watching the weekly episodes of Miami Vice on television. Sonny's calling his ex-wife...Wow. No words. Watching it just now gave me chills all over again.
The music, editing, cinematography and mood is on another level. People laugh at the 80s as being the decade of excess but you simply cannot deny that this is pure quality
The 80s was a great decade for a lot of stuff man
@@ethansprague2005no shot
We lost the ability to be campy after the '80s unfortunately
💯
As a film director, I'm just going to say it. This has to be one of the Top 3 scenes in Television history. The Directing, the Acting, the cinematography, the editing, the storyline, the minimalistic writing to allow the visuals to take center stage, and of course the music...is on a different level. The combination of all those things makes this my favorite TV scene of All-Time
As a 19 year old, I've been listening to 80s music for less than two years. Weird to think that there was a time when all of this was actually mainstream. To the old lot, lucky you.
But on the other hand you still have alot of life to live 🤷♂️
nothing quite like it!
80's music made you feel something
Weeeeeeeeeelcome :)
Thanks, we were cool, creative, and funny as heck. But never mind the music. For now just fix the present cancel culture butt-hurt situation.
the shot of the streetlight glare reflecting off the mirror-shined hood is one of the best shots in tv. it's so stunning.
Quite possibly the coolest three minutes in television history.
I wouldn't mind if the drive was a at least minute longer. The whole scene is so relaxing as you watch it a couple of times.

Yeah, they arrived too early to the boat

In the Air Tonight makes me want to drive in a highway at night.
that phone call is heart breaking.
Perfect song for the perfect show!!!!!!! I love the 80's!!!!!!!!!!
One of the best moments on TV
Don Johnson was so friggin cool with his perfect face and his perfect voice and perfect outfits. Never gets old
It was his NAME ***DON JOHNSON***

His daughter has a perfect face and voice too. I hope Dakota gets that perfect role soon too.
My Dad, God rest his soul, was (I swear to God I am not making this up), a vice cop in Miami back in the 60s and 70s. I was born in 73 and we left Miami when I was around 7. After he retired he had his personal business cards made saying
" William Kennedy
I was Miami Vice
before
Miami Vice was Miami Vice"
That was back when cops were respected. It's sad how 1 or a few badd cops make almost the entire country's law enforcement look badd. I say not to defund the police but reform them. Defund what a stupid idea
We had the best music in the 80s. We just did.
we need a "rennascennace" musical genius to catch its spirit and apply to life today
By far one of the best scenes to EVER be on a tv show
I remember watching this as an 11-year old when it first aired and thinking it was literally the coolest thing I’d ever seen. 35 years later and it’s still up there!
Born in 74 I'm onboard with you! The 80s when you could still smoke in a bar and no p.c. culture!
@@OxC-BIRD smoke in a bar??
I remember going to regular ass restaurants here in San Diego that had cigarette machines in the lobby. Different times 😂😂😂
Michael Mann knows mixing music and video like nobody else.
He really does - and across genres (the last 10 minutes of Last of the Mohicans and the last 10 minutes of Heat for example)
1981's "Thief" with James Caan and music by Tangerine Dream is another great example.
@@jsusna1972 Fucking a right!
Driving at night in the 80s with city lights to this type of music was the shit.
In the air tonight is Phil collins' best and most Badass song
Miami Vice is its own genre. The show set out to capture the essence of Miami and it succeeded so well that Miami has tried to live up to it ever since.
Michael Mann one of the best directors, He directed one of the best movies ever: Heat
I came here to talk about “Heat.” Thank you!
1981's "Thief" with James Caan also had some great music by Tangerine Dream.
Michael Mann did Manhunter the best movie ever, the precursor to Red Dragon, William Peterson better than Edward Norton. 💯🔱
@@gregthomas1323 love manhunter
The shot of the street lights reflecting off the car bonnet is straight out of Thief, like five years prior
this song with this TV show......you couldn't create a better blend
One of the most iconic scenes in television history. Another testament to the sheer genius of Michael Mann.
Kids will never know how cool the 80s were.
Unfortunately … the freedom, old and new perfectly mixed .
So much stuff you couldn't even show on television any more if you wanted to. :(
Yeah, everything they know was either influenced or ripped off from the eighties.
@@Rico-ow3ysKinda like how everything the 80s offered was ripped from or influenced by previous decades??? Styles live, die, live, repeat all the time.
Thats how that works bud…
I'm one of those kids and I wish I was there...
The most perfect scene ever...feels like its straight out of a movie! This scene will forever live in TV history!
Esta escena, junto con la que muere Zito de sobredosis son brutales.
This scene did for Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight. What the Motown Michael Jackson Moonwalk did for Billie Jean. It catapulted the song into a whole different stratosphere.
A fantastic series, blew you away every week.... ground breaking and never matched.
This scene defined an entire decade! The music, styles, cars, movies, and fashion of the 1980’s were made manifest from this scene. Thomas Carter, the director of this episode is an underrated GOAT!
Coolest scene in television history. Period.
This scene made me fall in love with Miami Vice.
Powerful scene...Just found out he had been sold out by a partner he knew for years and had to know if one of the few things he even cared about was real or an illusion as well.
100%
"It was real? Wasn't it?"
so badass...
CHILLS.
You bet it was
If I asked my ex that she would have said non of it was real. It was real for me.
Never seen the show... What did he mean by that? What happened between them that he was so suspicious?
@@MuddahFukkah He wasn't suspiscious. He just wanted to be sure he had experienced real love in his life, even if it wasn't lasting forever, before possibly going to die.
