  • Bryn Terfel performing "Non più andrai" from Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro during the final of the 1989 BBC Cardiff Singer Of The World competition.
The phenomenal showdown with contemporary Dmitri Hvorostovsky during the Main Prize final soon became known as the 'Battle of the Baritones' and, until this day, marks one of the highlights of the competition's history.
The Welsh bass-baritone won the newly introduced Lieder Prize that year. Initially associated with Mozart (Figaro, Leporello and Don Giovanni in particular), he has since moved on to heavier roles as found in Puccini's and Wagner's catalogues.

1989 was probably the best year of the competition! Between Bryn and Dmitri what a pair of world classed baritones!!!!

Sir Bryn was merely 23 here and it was somewhat of a different voice. Higher and lighter and for a while the potential of singing classic Verdi baritone roles was talked about. I had been looking forward to hearing his Jago someday. Sadly for me, that's not likely to happen but I do appreciate him in the roles he does sing. Nobody else has quite that measure of exuberance. Hard to take your eyes off him onstage.

I have a couple of recordings from hie early teen years. He sang beautifully then and magnificently now.

@@TheLadyLilyth As a baritone myself, I can tell you that with many of us the voice gets deeper and darker with age. It's possible that he put off singing these roles for too long, or simply decided to go in a different direction and take on parts like Wotan and Hans Sachs, all of which I feel he sang brilliantly. I remember many years ago it was announced that he'd be singing the fiendishly difficult baritone leads in 'Il Trovatore' and 'Vespri Siciliani'. Plans for these were dropped for whatever reason.

Buena interpretación, con una discreta dosis de comicidad (que le sirve a quienes no son itálico parlantes). Mozart fue un genial compositor de óperas.

It’s sort of hilarious that this is the March of the Royal Foot Guards…
If you don’t know Italian, you can still totally catch the meaning that this guy is “very satisfied with something he is thinking about.” That’s the mark or a true performer.

You shall go no more, lustful butterfly,
    Day and night flitting to and fro;
    Disturbing ladies in their sleep
    Little Narcissus, Adonis of love.
No longer will you have these beautiful feathers,
    That light, romantic cap,
    That hair, that glowing countenance,
    That rosy, womanly complexion.
    Among soldiers, by Jove!
A big moustache, a little kit.
With a rifle on your shoulder, and a sabre on your flank,
    Standing up straight, hard faced,
A big helmet, or a big turban,
    Plenty of honour, little pay!
And instead of dancing the fandango,
    A march through the mud.
    Through mountains, through valleys,
With snow and with the sun beating down.
To the beat of the bugle,
    Of bombs, of cannons,
    Whose thunderous report
    Makes your ears ring.
    Cherubino, to victory:
    To glory in battle!

There is room for another wonderful baritone, not to take anything from Dmitry Hvoroztofski (sp). Maestro Terfel has a deep and sonorous baritone. He is also one of scariest Scarpias ever in Tosča.
