- Dmitri Hvorostovsky (1962-2017) performing "Pietà, rispetto, amore" from Verdi's opera Macbeth during the fifth preliminary round of the 1989 BBC Cardiff Singer Of The World competition.
The phenomenal showdown with contemporary Bryn Terfel during the Main Prize final soon became known as the 'Battle of the Baritones' and, until this day, marks one of the highlights of the competition's history.
The Russian baritone took the Main Prize that year. He was one of the world’s most extraordinary operatic singers, with a great appreciation for the works of Verdi and Tchaikovsky in particular. He embodied a great variety of characters, including Onegin, Yeletsky, Germont, Don Giovanni, Rigoletto, Count di Luna and many more, at the most renowned opera houses worldwide. He was equally a sought after recitalist, with his repertoire covering a great variety of composers, from Russia and beyond.
In 2019, the Cardiff Singer Audience Prize was dedicated to his memory.

Thankyou Klara, for this wonderful reminder of Dmitri singing his heart out in this world famous competition!!
Dmitri started off from the start as a brilliant star, never to be surpassed, and he hasn’t been. Genius, brilliant man! Bless his soul!
He always had a special way of portraying inner turmoils so vividly and effectively with his facial expressions and his voice. He was a great gift to us. Still is.
One of the greatest baritones all times ❤❤❤❤
Very artistic and charming! Great, soft voice!
So young and with so many tools already in his armoury! He truly was Cardiff Singer of the World! What a voice! What a talent!❤❤❤❤❤
He was one in a million, he left us too early. R.I.P. Dmitri
In my humble opinion, Dima remains the greatest winner of Cardiff Singer of the World in its 40 year history ❤️❤️❤️
Amen!!! I second that!!! He is the finest singer I have ever heard and have been waiting 76 years❤ for him!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
@@kathleenschallock361 The greatest bariton ever. And also one of the most handsome men ever, especially when he became older and grey
It is not ( just) his superb voice but his looks and as we learnt later on his personality, like a special gift for us mere mortals. I only discovered him at age 78, but what a discovery.
@@kratty0166 yes indeed. A special look he had and the smile! I am now quite gratified at my age, 79, to have almost white hair. 😉
Could we please not ignore how handsome Maestro Dimitri Hvorostovsky was??? ❤❤❤
Indeed! A sight for sore eyes ❤
Yes, just a divine human being 💝
A talented handsome baritone
Wonderful! Passionate! What a brilliant vocal performance! So full of emotion! Thanks for posting!

Grazie
Definitely, the greatest Cardiff World Singer of all time!
I miss him so much!
Splendido il Dmitri giovane! ❤ 🌹🙏
Fantastic ❤
We will always love and remember💖
C'est magnifique!
I think you are right, there is no comparison to Dmitri’s voice.he is in a class by himself.
Dima è Unico
Bravo 👏
Bravissimo
Legends never die🙌🙌
Che classe!!! ❤️
The dramatic intensity is just superb.
Imádom !!!❤️❤️❤️
Incrível 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Voce sublime.
What an instrument! Don't think I ever saw him live. Now I have to check. (Lyric)
Magnifique...
¡Delicioso!
💞
👏👏👏👏🌺🌸❤️🌷💋🌸💋
Tra i tenori qui selezionati, Schipa. Considerando anche gli assenti, Carreras.
✌💝🌟🔥♥️👑
GOATTTTTTTT
Katherine, what do you mean by that comment, please?
❤
@@thomasvin1 It means “Greatest of all Time”
I heard him sing live on several occasions. His voice was not big and had a muffled quality to it. Seeing a video like this one would think he could produce ringing tones that would fill an opera house, but that was not true. Size of voice aside, he had a lot of good qualities (beauty of tone, legato, breath support, phrasing, et al) and deserved the major career that he had.
Was he Heavily miked during this performance in your opinion?
@@thomasvin1the microphones that record are usually very close to the singer in competitions like these. Here Dimitri was not amplified but rather sounds larger than he would live because he was very close to the recording microphone.
I tend to agree with @sutherland9 in that I heard him at the Metropolitan Opera on 2 occasions and I expected a larger, more ringing quality in his sound. In his recordings he does exhibit beautiful long phrases and a very pleasing quality. RIP

Didn`t he sing "Ombra mai fu", too, greatly appealing to Elisabeth Söderström?
Yes, he did!
Dead, you know......
So is Callas. Just FYI.
