Thank you so much! I had to replace ~30 shingles. With your tutorial, I was able to pull out the ones that wore thin (tar paper showing through) and replace them. The work isn't easy, though! It's kind of unnerving working on an angle for three hours straight.

I would think that roof is to low of a pitch for shakes? Down here in south east louisiana these roofs fall apart in 10 yrs. I hate them but have done a few and actually have one to do now. Thanks.

I wikied shakes and found out that shingles are sawn on four sides and shakes are split with froe or machine. I but on shakes once that had little or at all for taper. It was a small ornamental shed. It looked nice afterwards but harder to repair I surmise.

Insert a 30lb tar paper shim underneath the hole. fold the sides like a envelope so water does not go sideways. Can put a small patch on top with some flashing cement

I thought that shakes were uniform in thickness from back to front and shingles are the tapered articles. There's a rose for a name I guess.

same technique on vertical shake siding?

Shakes laid 8-10in exposure 24in long (2 rows of nails per shake)
Shingle Siding 4-6in exposure 18in long (3 rows of nails per shake)
Siding sometimes is easier removing it all, or cutting Shingles down to fit spot repairs.

Yes this is a similar technique for vertical shake siding, shingle siding is a different technique and a little more difficult. I will post a update on the felt paper repair and some cool techniques to fix leaks...Thanks for the likes
