I bet my roof would be a great example for anyone who is looking for business because I have been curious about washing off roof to help preserve it until I can replace it there's a little more moss build-up but just afraid to use anything on it because they are about the same shape as your example roof should I go for it or not
Well 1st of you want 2 to 3 % sodium hypochlorite. What you mixed was lucky if it was..5%. House hold bleach is only around 4 to 5%. You would need to mix it 1 gallon of house bleach to 2 gallons of water. Spray it on and it will change before your eyes. Rinse it down and the mix up some oxcilic acid and spray it on to really brighten up the color to like new.. No need to scrub at all
How many cups of ox would I add to a 26 gallon soft wash tank?
You answered all my questions in one video thank you so much. I want to paint the cedar after I clean them. Any advise on paint or is that a bad idea
Thanks for making this video.
David very good info. I have a huge roof in he spring that I am biding now for a complete restoration, strip, clean, brighten and restain.
Unfortunately you can see the HUNDREDS of holes poked all over the shakes now because of those bear claw shoes, completely ruining the integrity and allowing moisture to penetrate into the cedar.
Cedar, having a natural 3% oil content which allows it to repel moisture and be used for a roofing surface, is severely compromised after exposing the inner layers of the wood.
low pressure really keeps that kind of back wash water damage from happening, the things i watch out for is vents and gaps under tile roof peaks and flashing joints, so far, no claims of any damange,
I have a cedar shake roof in VA and a diy person. Is the Cedar Wash the same as Wash Safe Cedar Wash. Just curious, do you use bleach with the TSP?
Thanks you James,
oxalic acid. it will lower the ph in the wood and brighten it right back up
About how many square feet can you do with 1 gallon of cedar wash
hey when you are using the cedar wash it will brighten up twice as much as that if you scrub it with a deck brush then after brushing re apply a light coat of the cedar wash and srray it off before the cedar wash starts drying. if you let it set too long after spraying it with the wash the black stuff starts to settle back into the wood
Thanks Brother
Great info David, I definitely picked up on some tips. I am looking at purchasing a home with cedar siding and while its not as bad as the roof you had worked on in the video, it still has some discoloration. I was wondering. After you treat it with the cedar wash and/or pressure washer, is there a second step involved that seals the wood like a wood finish on decking? Or would this be the only step required, just washing it? Any info is greatly appreciated.
Treating after with preservative. We use Cedar Guard in Vancouver Canada.
good comparison, good job !
hi David. what i think hes trying to tell you is to never spray upwards against shingles and instead spray downwards. very good test. just hope ur applying all safety standards while holding that camera with one hand and the wand on the other... thanx again for the video for 10.97 you get the same result for 80.00$
Thanks for posting this very informative video!
Thanks for this video, but what was the "brightener" you mentioned?
;-) I grew up in a erra where we told to be careful, its worked well for me so far, I did have roof corkers on though, ;-)
very good info thanks
I will give that a try next test, thx
do no pressure wash up and down
not sure of the meaning of your comment?
You did not use strong enough bleach. Not even close.
Well at end of the day, The straight low pressure wash did as good as the chemical treatment. Our company would prefer not to over use any chemical, Thanks for your input
Daly's wood brightner, any commercial grade wood brightner woods well
👍😊😮😉✌️
YOU SHOULD NOT BE SHOWING PEOPLE THIS VIDEO, YOU DO NOT USE A PRESSURE WASHER ON A CEAER ROOF. YOU ARE DESTROYING THOSE ROOFS.
News flash, that roof is already shot and needs replacing, but perfect to test cleaning compound claims. Corker strap on for safety are standard and cause no damage in Washington, we must have thicker cedar shakes :)
At the end of the day, we have enough chemicals going into the ground, less is more, thanks for your input
Go to home depot, get wood brightener and follow there steps and it will put the finishing touch your looking for, its in the deck cleaning product line, enjoy the results
