The only thing I would recommend is placing the shingle as far up as possible by hand, inserting two nails, tapping them in slightly and as close to the top of the shingle as possible and then use a small block of wood flush with the end of the shingle when you are tapping it into place so you aren't damaging the end of the shingle with the hammer. This will bend the nails a bit and then proceed to finish hammering them in with a flat bar. Cheers!
We used a slaters bar to hook nails out when repairing shingles. Had to use this technique to extract sidewall shingles to blow in cellulose. We employed duck bill vicegrips to pull on the shingle. Sometimes you’d get a shingle out intact and reinstall it seamlessly.
I thought of the same thing and saw your note, but I don't think it matters, either way, you'll have a slightly bent nail if not a small start of a split. Has anyone used a dub of glue to glue the inserted shake to the above or below with no nails with success?
Shakes are meant to be installed on furring. They never dry out evenly installed directly on sheathing. Sadly, they are a thing of the past. You're asking for trouble using them like that.
This video should be filed under "comedy" because this video is a joke. Just read all of the comments with corrections. I would suggest folks look to another video for the correct way to do this, and I pity the poor soul who hires this company to do any work. SMH.
Just the video that I needed to see. Parents replaced there cedar 8 years ago for 26k, and there's like 50 shingles popping up. Thank you

Tap the single up using a piece of wood and a hammer to not damage or blemish the shingle with the head of the hammer.
I was thinking the same thing.
I need to replace the entire roof on a gazebo that I have … wish you were in the Pocono area I would hire you for sure

Angle those nails then when you tap the shake up the nails will straighten out.

Great video , a lot easier that I expected . Cheers
Great demonstration. Thank you 👍🏼
What do you recommend from the Korkers line for occasional work on cedar shake roofs. (I'm the homeowner)
How do you know if the shingle is under the paper or just tearing it up as you pound the shake in?
Really cool, thanks man!

maybe walking with spikes on thin wood cause spliting.
How long should the roofing nails be for the ridge cap? Thanks
2 and 1/4 inch. Unless heavy ridge caps then 2 and 3/4
You do realize that by setting the nails and then tapping it up you are just pulling the nails out and the shingle is no longer fastened properly?
I thought you weren't supposed to have paper under them I was told so they could breathe ?
@@cravenmoorehead6219 Code requires installing both underlayment and interlayment
I was going to say that too
Caulking is better

Why in the world would anyone put those on roofs, will not last, siding yes, roof no.
ALL roofs used to be cedar shake, it lasts 40 years.
Educate yourself before commenting.
Compared to my cedar shake shingles, these in the video are so thin!
