USAF Heavy Operations at Prestwick Airport 2 KC10s 2 KC135s & 1 C5M

- Hi all. During the middle of December 2016 there was a lot of fog down south in Mildenhall, which led to US Air Force KC135s & a C5M. The C5M ended up in Birmingham first but positioned up during the night. There were also 2 US Air Force KC10s in on an overnight stop on a training exercise. The start clip was filmed on the 17th of December. I only got one of the KC135 landings. This KC135 went tech the next day, eventually departing during the week. Everything else departed throughout the 18th of December, which was a great day of spotting indeed. A great day to round of 2016 at Prestwick. I hope you all enjoy this video.

Brilliant! Thanks for sharing! I love the sound of KC-10’s screaming tri engines!
I enlisted in the USAF in 1975, stayed 26 yrs and was a contractor for another 15, but I still am in awe of a C-5 during takeoff.
Nice one, Thanks for Watching :)
Cute little tri motors! The Stratotanker is cute, too! My all time fave will always be the Galaxy but only with Tf-39 engines! 😉
Completely agree with the TF39. Thanks for Watching :)
@@DanielSander hey, if the engines don't have that ringy-screamy sound it ain't a real Galaxy...😁👌
The trijets will forever hold a very special place in my heart. Love the KC-10
Best planes in the skies, Thanks for Watching :)
Kudos to the vidioghraper secured himself a vantage point to share these beautiful take offs, front end of KC 10 looks passed off with huge engines what an aircraft and thank you👏 for sharing.
first 135 is from the 459th ARW at Andrews AFB, I served in that unit when it was an Airlift Wing flying the C-141
DC10-30 a brilliant aircraft 👍🇦🇺
fave plane ever.
Love that air shedding sound of the older jet engines
Same here. Thanks for Watching :)
Spotting at its finest :) what a pleasure to comment and view!!
Thanks Fellow Dan :)
it's great to see all these classics still going strong in military aviation. fantastic video Dan, thoroughly enjoyed watching!
Thanks Mate. It sure is, especially since most DC10s have been scrapped now. Always a real treat to see them.
Kc135 has an awesome sound!
Thanks for Watching. Yeah they do sound good.
Incredible variety of USAF stuff! You're super lucky up there. Great video.
Thanks Daniel. We are, it is always a treat to see these.
Thanks. You were up close and personal without any obstructions like I see on some videos.
Thanks for Watching. Yeah I'm very fortunate Prestwick has great spotting locations.
That was sure sweet. Thanks !
Thanks for Watching :)
I worked on all three of those aircraft in the Air Force.
Thank you for your service sir
Amazing video mate!!! KDC10s are my favorites here offcourse!!
Cheers Rudi. I argee, although if the C5 was an A/B then my opinion would be different.
Bloody hell those KC-10's sounded great! Amazing video mate :) Smashes the like button!
Thanks Mate. The KC10s sound incredible, its a classic.
@@DanielSander0
Much liked...very high quality!
Thanks for Watching :)
Terrific video the 707 tbh is a 757 trapped in a 707 fuselage the kc 10 sounds incredible ge cf6 love it though what i mean reg 707 beautiful machine just looks and sounds as if 4 rb211 motors strapped to it as i say the video is absolutely terrific xx
That friends is what freedom sounds like!!
Was KC-10 Crew Chief for 6 yrs.Great video
Wow, that must of been a brilliant job. Thanks for Watching :)
Great video, Dan. Thanks!
Thanks for Watching :)
Nice video. I see KC1355s everyday out of MacDill AFB but I've never seen a KC10 so this is a great treat to watch. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for Watching, KC135s are rarer at Prestwick than the KC10s, however both are a real treat to see.
TPAspotting gosh, I wish I could see a KC135 everyday.
Great video! Some awesome movements there!
Thanks Bud.
Great video Dan!
Thanks Will.
Love the 3 engines
nice kc135 , amazing kc10 , of course the C5 is the titan .
Thanks for Watching :)
Nothing tops of kc-10’s blasting off love that buzz saw sound!
Indeed, thanks for watching :)
Thanks for video 👍🇺🇸
Thanks for Watching :)
sure love how the old Boeing 707s are running strong!!!
Thanks for Watching :)
technically not a 707, the E-3 Sentry is based off the 707 airframe, the KC-135 was designed off of the 367-80 plane, it is much shorter than the actual 707
I have to agree with the consensus that the KC/DC 10 is Beautiful, but goddamn that Galaxy is sexy.
Thanks Mate. Yeah, its hard to beat a classic tri-jet like the DC10.
Didn't the DC 10s crash a lot?
@@morgz84 ....
Excellent footage
Thanks Buddy :)
So sick! Liked.
Cheers Archie :)
Awesome footage!
Thanks Paul :)
Terrific Quality !
Thanks for Watching :)
I got to fly on the KC-10's a few times and loved the aircraft, but the cables can be a little noisy on them. Throughout my career in the Air Force I got to see the KC-135's, and the C-5's are a giant workhorse which have been flying since the late 1960's and still the best for the Air Force. Even though the best cargo aircraft was the C-141's, I have great praise for the large C-5 Galaxy's and now the C-17's.
It must of been something else, getting to fly on all those. Never seen a C141, but i've seen all the rest, including a C5 with TF39 engines. Thanks for Watching.
Yes, I got up close an personal with the c-5's, 141's & c-130'S while stationed at ramstein ab, germany during the mid 70's refueled them all !!! 86TH TACTICAL FIGHTER WING!!!!
Daniel Sander here in puerto rico we get a lot of air traffic. Seen all of these plus the c-141, blue angels, tbirds, concorde...
I flew on a 141 back in '73 from McGuire AFB in New Jersey to Lajas Field in the Azores and eventually back again. IT was the typical Air Force luxury travel, sitting in the cargo bay facing backward looking at the skids of cargo. I'm thinking 40 watt lights, no fills interior, and no windows to peek out now and then. Five and a half hours each way, good times. Found memories of a Starlifter and the US Air Force.
I remember the C-141s all over Maguire AFB on Armed Forces Day
Jeez - I'm a sometimes PIK spotter but I've never seen such an array of heavies like the ones you've captured here Dan short of G8. The quality of your shooting is amazing - great video - thanks for sharing.
Thanks for Watching. Traffic has been picking up recently, well worth a visit to the mound.
Nice one Sandpaper, Loved that sound!
Thanks Mattress :)
I liked those kc10&dc10 design
Cracking video.
Thanks Bud.
i like watching the galaxies take off. Just watch how her main gear folds and tucks back into her belly
Thanks for Watching, yeah the rotating gear is really cool.
No smoke of the 707 and I love the Dc 10 roar
Thanks for Watching :)
you won't get smoke with those CFM56's
Prestwick AFB! Nicely one mate :)
Cheers Elliot. Indeed!
Great video
Thanks for Watching :)
Ahhhh what memories, I was a ramp rat while stationed at ramstein ab, germany. Ground refueling, so I got up close and personal with many aircraft, C-5'S (fat albert) we called them. C-141'S, c-130'S, KC-135'S, but no kc-10's. our home based aircraft was F4-E fighter jets. "73-78" TIME SERVED! !!! #MEMORIES
The bigger ones must have taken forever to refuel
Me too I refueled some the first ones the AF at March AFB Flew in one from Travis to Hawaii ..
I remember when they came and we had refuel the to full then defuel them which took FOREVER .
@@ItsCarlnotCarla sweet, what years did you serve?? I flew TDY to Aviano ab, Italy when I was stationed at Ramstein ab, Germany. Wildest ride of my life !!😂. Those defuels are the worst!!
@Christopher Laughlin sweet, how was the eqipment? Still used hosecarts?? Those things were a pain in the ass sometime. Especially when we had hot pit refueling (Red ball) !!!
Great video!
Thanks Bud :)
Taxi sure does take A Long time. Big bulbous SOB!!
Nice aircraft!
Indeed, Thanks for Watching :)
super the MD11.thanks.have a nice weekend.greetz:Peerke.
Thanks for Watching :)
@@DanielSander graag gedaan.
0:30 An aging queen presiding over her royal court XD.
While I do realize that the C-5s needed to be M'ed, in so doing, the wonderful sound endemic to the earliest C-5s (by way of the TF-39s that originally posted them, ultimately forming the basis of the CF-6 that powers them now) is gone. I loved that distinctive sound when I lived near what used to be known as McClellan AFB.
Thanks for Watching. I would rather see a C5B over a C5M anyday. Was lucky to see the last C5B to visit here in 2016. What a site that was.
Hey at least the kc10 kinda sounds like a old c5
thanx-Scotrail82 ! OUTSTANDING ! The C-5M SUPER GALAXY takeoff (from 7:00 - 8:15) - (especially, when viewed at 1/2 speed)
Thanks for Watching :)
Just amazing how something that big can fly in the air
Indeed, thanks for watching.
Excelente Vídeo Parabéns Muito Lindo Parabéns
Obrigado por assistir :)
Very good camera work !
Thanks for Watching :)
Nice catch
Thanks for watching
Very nice
Thanks for Watching :)
I was watching this video and I thought "what weather bored to work" with many clouds and could.
Best wonderful Air to refuleing systems
Fascinantes
This is the reengined KC-135 and the old J-57's are no more ever again because these older engines are well obsolete today.
Thanks for Watching. Israel still have some with the original engines.
Go Air Force!!!!
Nice ❤❤❤❤
Thanks for Watching :)
WOW... cool :D
Thanks for Watching.
Another brilliant video, I really enjoy your channel and thanks for posting. Do you have some way of knowing when there are going to be good/rare movements at EGPK or is is just luck/lots of time standing waiting...??!!
Thanks for Watching. Its a mix of everything really. I sometimes get info, or I pop up on the off chance, however it is always a waiting game.
Cheers pal, thanks for replying! Good luck with all the vids and future spotting!
It's hard to get a good grasp of the relative scale of two different airliner type aircraft unless you see them contrasted next to each other; the features are all so much the same and scaled proportionate to the airframe rather than being of a standard size, so it's hard to tell. The cockpit windows cover the upper nose no matter what, only the windows happen to be much larger on larger aircraft. Only the passenger windows seem to stay roughly the same size, only becoming more profuse as the aircraft grows. Anyway, you don't really realize how damn big a KC-10 is until you see one contrasted with a smaller plane on the same runway. They are big old bastards, really. Not a 747, but no Cessna either. Still can't get used to the KC-135 with those big bulgy engines either; can't decide if it ruins the looks or just totally changes them.
BTW, it's "KC-135", "KC-10" and "C-5M". That's how the USAF designated them. People leaving hyphens out is one of my pet peeves; a "C5M" sounds like a WWII-era Japanese reconnaissance plane built by Nakajima. Did I miss something and they started charging extra per every character you type, or what? How much time could you possibly have saved by not bothering to push the "-" key three times?
Besides Fed-Ex we have the best airplane fleet in the world and hats off to our aviators in all services, thank you for what you know and do
for our great country, USA...... #maga2020
These must be like museums inside, can tell how old that first one is because of the design of the tailfin. Is there a way to finding out when planes like these are going to be at the airports? I did plenty of plane spotting as a kid, when it wasn’t uncommon to see trijets and older Boeing’s but now it’s a lot different and apart from the odd military or cargo ship one will only ever see the usual planes we all know.
Thanks for Watching. Yeah, onboard one of these must be a step back in time. The industry has changed and is changing a lot once again. It slowed down a good bit in the mid-2000s. Its certainly picked up again.
Ok cheers
I miss that sound!
Thanks for Watching :)
Bubz 1 - Not me. I used to hear DC-10s taking off when I worked near MSP. The sound just reminded me of their horrible history.
Been down a few times to try and spot done special stuff, but only normally see Cargolux and one or two other freighters. I'm 45 mins away from PIK, how often does the US fleet stop over? Would love to see stuff like this in the flesh.
Thanks for Watching. All depends on their deployments and airshows really.
The second plane to take off must have been heavier on the right hand side, notice how the left rear wheel leaves the ground first.
Never even noticed that until you pointed it out. Thanks for Watching :)
Just wind, if it had cargo, KC-135s are center loaded, not side by side like the KC-10 and C-5.
Kevin Buggz you can see the wind sock, right crosswind.. pilot bank's slightly during rotation to compensate.
My sister was a jet mechanic and she work on kc135
From roll start to full power/thrust is low long on the C-5?
Thanks for Watching. No, used less than half the runway on Takeoff.
Where do you go to get this view of the aircraft ? I've only been to prestwick a couple of times but couldn't find anywhere with a view like this.
Thanks for Watching. This was filmed at the mound. Here is a Google maps link with all the spots at Prestwick Airport. www.plane-mad.com/airport-spotting-guides/united-kingdom/glasgow-prestick-pik-egpk.html
Thanks very much for that.
Here in the USA,you can't get anywhere near any aircraft...you're lucky,folks....cheers
Yeah the USA isn't very plane spotter friendly. Thanks for Watching :)
GREAT USA AIR FORCE
Is that third rear engine on the KC-10 a turbojet or a turbofan?
Thanks for Watching. Its the same engine as the two engines on the wings.
Does anybody know where Capt Ethridge is?
At 4:31 there the second kc10's engines are playing music
Thanks for Watching. Can't beat the classic sound of a DC10.
Yes! Love it.
The first too
@@DanielSander We can, actually. Just listen to the C-5A/C-5B Galaxy
Nothing like those baby’s doing nationdaysal service I used to be on an Hastings as an air dispatcher thought the things would shake themselves to bits as they rev ready for takeoff happy
that c5 was fully loaded
All KC 10s will be retired by end of 2024.
#3:, KC 135R is 60 years old! This KC 135 was reengined in 1987 becoming KC 135R
Yeah sadly thats the case, catch them while you can, Thanks for Watching :)
No reverse thrust on the 707?
KC-135's do not have reverse thrust
kc10 doesn't taxi with departure flaps but the c5 does?
we usually do yes, it's not a requirement to taxi with flaps
First image looked like a bumpy landing.
It was a bumpy landing that. Thanks for Watching :)
If I could have one of those C5's taxi over to my place and blow the leaves of my lawn that'd be great.
Thanks for Watching. It would break all your windows though, hahaha.
Send us your long. and lat. coordinates, we got you covered.
The galaxy could use the New GE-90x's
At 0:35 it was a rusty Boeing 747
Classic Scottish weather.
Yup, thanks for watching
DC-10 Right?
Yes, Thanks for Watching :)
next time 4K?.i have it.
0:30 - What is that dilapidated 747 doing there?
Fire service training
The KC-10 has more than 60 times the fuel capacity and is better too than the KC-135.
TheSirjohn2012 KC -10 has almost 2X the fuel & cargo capacity of KC -135. Wild to watch the boom operators work while in flight.
60x is obviously incorrect
A330-200 MRTT
no, none of these are the 330
3:15 star wars sound
Airforce should change out all the engine to GENX engines
Chris White
Why? The new fuel efficient airliner engines are designed for much slower speeds and the military do not use reverse thrust on any of their fleet jets.
@@u2mister17 have you seen the engines on a C-17 they have reverse thrust they're famous for doing it. All the military jets that they use for instance the kc-10 and E-3 sentry are based off of the DC10 and the DC8 respectively. They are already at their efficiency limit on how fast they can go any faster and they be wasting fuel because when you get closer to the speed of sound the more friction you get and airliners already travel exactly at that limit no faster
I bet you any money if they would give the C5 Galaxy for GE 90s that thing could go forever in the skies. And no slower that it goes now
4 kc10 kc135 I need every monthly let it supply me farm veng district ram thlenpui zel tur ani
KC-135s aren’t heavies... But I was a boom operator on the KC-10, I miss the sound of those engines.
Thanks for Watching :)
Sweet, good for you, I was 63150 ground refueling during my time in "73-78", tried to get into in-flight refueling but it never worked out. Good job !!! #RESPECT
That poor 747
She was the sister of the Lockerbie 747, and has been used for training.
