I agree completely and did then. OB is my all-time favorite. I admit that I wrongly thought she would repeat as gold medalist in the next Olympics as Katarina had.
@@biancahotca3244 Oksana overcame being orphaned and even homeless just a year before this. She overcame a living hell just to get to Norway for the games.
and then at 3:50, right as the music softens, she plies in the spin...such a beautiful moment of emotion, so unforced and connected to the natural unfolding of the musical pattern. lovely.
Interestingly, if you analyzed Nancy and Oksana's programs in today's scoring system some of Oksana's program is still technically more difficult. Oksana had four jumping passes after the halfway mark, and Nancy Kerrigan only had two! Oksana had more complex spin positions as well as more difficult choreography and transitions.
Man, if you are going to be objective do it right. Stop the nonsense, did you miss, we can look at the jumps and see the massive amount of telegraphing that Oksana had before her 3Flip, 3 Loop, & 3 Toe....versus, Nancy Kerrigan had spiral sequence before 3Loop, and step sequence before 3 Salchow/2Toe combination, so don't come on here talking about transitions when really neither program had it, but certainly Nancy would get the nod in proceeding footwork into jumps....Then the fact that Nancy landed a 3Lutz the most difficult jump after halfway point & the fact that Nancy had 2 acceptable combinations which is also critical to getting points in jump sequences which Oksana certainly would have received GOE deductions for the one she did in the beginning of the program...and for her 3Flip that was two footed, while Nancy would have received 0 GOE deductions......then you tack on the short program edge that Nancy Kerrigan had, which she had no errors and the lead....Nancy certainly would have won based on todays system because she had a sizable lead after the short program.
Well in spite of what I posted earlier, you can't really compare eras! The ISU system rewards technical content more these days, but it still can be manipulated just as much as the 6.0 system when judges want a certain skater to win... With that being said, Nancy's positions coming out of spins as well as her long "breaks" in the choreography (over 10 seconds at the beginning, count!!) might effect marks too... Judges also liked the Soviets for the speed they carried across the ice; Nancy was a bit slower in the long program. I'm not trying to say that Nancy's program had less technical content in terms of jumps, but in 1994 the judges didn't have the advantage of watching slow motion replays. So if they didn't see a two foot landing, they "didn't see it."
Are you saying you can't compare eras because somebody pointed out comprehensively and clearly why your original comparison in favour of Oksana was so flawed?
Nancy had triple jump combinations, an actual combination spin, and a layback spin position - Oksana had none of those. Plus Nancy's spirals and footwork were way better.
I think Oksana deserved to be praised, not criticized. No matter how difficult it is for her to combat her bad habits, she's a huge celebrity for goodness sake.
something so beautiful about the sense of release and brightness in the little opening of the arms at the end of the first footwork sequence...she's just so light and playful in every gesture there
I just watched that tonya vs kerrigan documentary and they said no one knew who Oksana was and that Kerrigan deserved the gold. but after watching the 2 perform...Oksana totally nailed it, it was a mix of grace, artistry and it kinda had a youthful sass to it... Kerrigan's performance kind of underwhelmed me :p
BabeDollB Oksana was the reigning world champion, I would hope everyone who follows figure skating would of known who she was! Certainly though the big storyline going into this Olympics was the whole Kerrigan/Harding melodrama, which ultimately left a lot of goodwill for Kerrigan among the general public.. while I agree that Oksana is a beautiful skater, I disagree with how you would of ranked her and Kerrigan. For me they both are elegant and graceful skaters, with different styles to be sure but definitely both have strong artistic merit. On the technical side though I give a pretty clear edge to Kerrigan, if we are judging this skate alone, they both made the error of doubling a planned triple jump, only Kerrigan did it on the more difficult Flip jump and Oksana does it on the easier toe jump (meaning Kerrigan's double flip is technically more difficult than Oksana's double toe). Additionally, oksana two footed one of her jumps (which these announcers don't mention during the live commentary) while Kerrigans were all landed clean. Finally Kerrigan performed a triple triple combination while Oksana does not. Given all that I don't know how you could give it to Oksana. Under the new ISU "code of points" judging system I don't see how Oksana would of won. Even if one wanted to give her more points on the presentation side (program components under the new system), it would of only been slightly ahead likely (since Kerrigan was known as a strong artistic/presentation skater.. meaning she'd score high on all the components likely, and even if Oksana edged her out, we're talking maybe a couple points difference at most) and not enough to overcome what Kerrigans technical elements score advantage likely would of been (the lack of a triple triple combination really hurts Oksana on the technical side, under the ISU system, if a top skater performs a clean triple triple and another skater doesn't, that skater is essentially giving up on winning the gold, if not giving up on a medal period).
Matthew Garlick u dont need to write an essay though lol. Regardless techniques / mistakes, watching Oksana make me forget this olympics, i feel in fairyland, she delivered the feelings and energy. Nancy didnt touch me at all.
No one knew who she was? She was in multiple international competitions at this point. Maybe no Americans knew who she was because all they watch are the Olympics and probably only heard about Nancy and Tonya because of the drama, but Oksana had won many competitions before this. She definitely didn't "come out of nowhere".
Everyone was focused on Nancy because of the drama and Oksana had been ignored in the American media so it seemed like she came out of nowhere. Many people wanted Nancy to win because of all the hype but Oksana earned her gold medal. She skated beautifully.
Technical merit was lower then Nancy's. The judges did take into account Oskana's technical errors; artistry does break all ties. Oksana deserved to win the gold medal and be called Olympic Champion forever. She won that night! Reminder to all she was the World Champion going into the games. Fun, program...light...and age appropriate. The judges liked her artistry in the end. Nancy DID win the technical mark. But there is only ONE Olympic Champion.
skatergirl this isn't really a story of an "artistic" skater vs a technical skater, both of them were known for their artistry and presentation and both of their scores showed that, they both had six 5.9's. Oksana's tie breaker was the artistic mark of one judge, since what mattered wasn't the marks but where the marks place each skater with each judge. In the end 4 judges had Nancy in first and 4 had Oksana and the German judge had them tied, to break that judges tie they looked at his artistic mark which gave it to Oksana. I think it's debatable that Oksana should have higher presentation marks, though they both have different styles, nacey's presentation and artistic merit were just as impressive as Oksana's (Nancy for instance had beautiful lines and great extensions). Many would argue that Nancy should get presentation credit for skating an entirely clean program while Oksana was mostly clean, she wasn't entirely having two footed a landing. What isn't debatable is the technical side. Nancy clearly had it all over Oksana there, some of these judges gave them the exact same technical mark (I think one or two may of even had Oksana higher), there's no reasonable explanation for marking them the same technically, let alone Oksana first. Even if Oksana hadn't two footed that jump, she performed what can easily be called a less technically difficult program, lacking a triple triple combination jump that was seen in Nancy's (on top of another triple double combo jump Nancy did). Under the new judging system the fact Nancy completed a triple triple and Oksana did not, would of pushed Oksana's technical score down so much relative to Nancy that it would of been nearly impossible for her to win and that's before even taking into account the two footed landing on one of the jumps which would of led to a negative grade of execution on that element. Under this scenario using the current ISU system, even if one wants to give Oksana higher artistic marks, it wouldn't be enough to overcome the technical lead Nancy would of had (since Nancy herself would of scored on the higher end on all the artistic components). My point being, yes Nancy won more points technically, but many, if if not most, the judges were being beyond overly generous with Oksana's technical mark, Nancy should of handily won technically with each judge and not by just 0.1. Certain judges however needed to give her these overly generous technical marks, to get her the placement in their ordinal that they wanted (first). This event here is a textbook example of what was unfortunately an all too common phenomenon in figure skating; the judges splitting into an eastern and western block, with judges from the soviet sphere of influence being overly favorable to skaters from the east and western judges doing the same with skaters from the west. I don't think it's a coincidence that the judges who placed Oksana first were Poland, Czechoslovakia, Ukraine and China (all communist or former communist countries associated with the soviet dominated "eastern block"while the judges giving it to Kerrigan were Great Briton, the US, Canada and Japan (technically a country of the east, but one that was closely allied with and associated with "the west" through the Cold War up till today). And finally you have Germany, who had them tied, Germany of course having been recently reunified at that time after over four decades of being divided between.. a communist and soviet dominated East Germany and the American allied West Germany. It's pretty ironic that it was this judge, coming from a country that was literally divided between the east and west, who had them tied.
Even though they weren't technically communist anymore, in their minds they still were. They weren't about to let the American girl beat the Ukraine girl. Two judges placed Oksana 3rd and Liu Chin from China 2nd and Nancy Kerrigan 1st.Her performance wasn't near as strong technically and the Eastern Bloc judges looked the other way especially on that two foot landing. Nancy definitely won the gold medal. Michelle Kwan was only 13 and the only one of these to skate in the World Championships in 1994 where she finished 7th.I think she was there to skate in Nancy's place in case she couldn't do it after being clubbed in the knee. Everybody knows Michelle Kwan after that. I wonder if Christy Yamaguchi could have repeated if she had skated. She was Japanese American and won the gold in 1992,while Nancy won the bronze.I heard the radio announcer say that she two stepped it since I was driving and saw it on tape that night. The TV announcers should have said it. I am more upset with this than I am with Tonya Harding. I grew up in the cold war and know how they cheat.
Nancy was very artistic and was technically superior than the not so mature Oksana Baiul. This shows your lack of knowledge in ice skating. You are just a hater based on misquotes and false rumors about what Nancy Kerrigan said. That clouds your judgement on ice skating. Since the five commie judges "gave" her 1st while two other judges gave her 3rd place scores and none for Nancy. One less commie and Nancy takes home the gold. It is that simple.
In your case it is Cubamania. You cried when Fidel Castro died. I can remember when the communists under the infidel Castro took over Cuba and it was a nightmare, communist style.
You need to do your research ... Three out of the five judges that gave Oksana first place actually tied Nancy and Oksana artistically and give Oksana higher technical marksSo then that would mean Only 2 judges that night gave Oksana first place marks due to artistic marks. So actually she won due to “higher technical” marks which is totally outrageous! Nancy was robbed
Everyone who favored Nancy's technical skills, well just as you know an amazing performance its not only bcoz the technical skills. But also the emotion through the performance, the feeling, sincerity, characteristic, artistic. Like NO american idol winners who have amazing singing skills can sale more albums than lady gaga. Oksana has the IT factor which the "skillful" Nancy didnt have. Do u know what i mean?
Milka Ajeng I sure do and audience after audience and most judges agree with you. The sour personality of Nancy sure did not help. BUT Kerrigan was a strong skater just not the best.
That's a poor comparison. Lady Gaga is a star, but she herself is also extremely talented. She also has an army of publicity people behind her. It's not like she did it all on her own. Oksana and Nancy both had only themselves on the ice.
Thanks for posting these! The Canadian commentary is SO refreshing after listening to our American commentators who never seem to shut up and have already picked the winner (usually WRONG).
It's a toss up for me. Nancy was such a beautiful girl with perfect body and line. Total elegance. Oksana was so light, her jumps so high...as if she had no weight. Just looks like a sprite. Plus, unbelievable upper body grace. She was as limber and fluid as a prima ballerina. Back, neck, head, arms and hands. They should have awarded two golds!
Here Nancy said she 'missed' the first triple but in American commentary she said 'it wasn't a mistake, it was a great double flip'. I think overall Oksana used her head, and body more, facial expressions, she just expressed her music better than Nancy did hers imo. Bauil was enchanting, magical in both of her performances and that's what won the Olympics for her. And of course she's lucky a lack of triple jump combos didn't hurt her in that scoring system-nor two foot jumps.
Nancy doubled one (or more?) of her triples, and she was doing that long before being attacked. Nancy was also mad that Oksana totally ignored the drama with Tonya. She wanted to be the center of attention but it ended up being Oksana's Olympics lol!
watching as someone who's not caught up with the Soviet block/American divide therefore am not biased towards either side politically, Oksana's routine and performance, I think is better than Kerrigan's. She's got a great natural affinity for music too- and her apparent joy in performing is infectious!
What Kerrigan lack to an extreme, Oksana have in abundance, that is detail grace in the correct balance and measure. This is a quality absent from the American culture of "extra large" and out of proportion society. Oksana is an artist. Kerrigan a thechnician.
Look, I thought Oksana deserved the win as well. But don't try to prop up your opinion with some kind of stupid generalization about "American culture." You just sound dumb. Oksana's performance stands on its own.
for all the controversy it's why I thought Tonya, when she was on, was a better skater (obviously not n this competition). She was passionate but also technically advanced
Jan tellit, one of the people commenting here, I think is on to something. Oksana's win was an accomplishment so miraculous, that the only logical explanation for it is divine intervention. I guess she only needs two more miracles to become a saint. God sure works in mysterious ways:-)
***** No, it wasn't quite a miracle, because it was a very close contest. Scroll down and read Jan's comment and you'll see where I'm coming from by jokingly making the miracle comment.
They never really cared about "transitions" back then ... Oksana took a really long time setting up for her jumps ... the 2 unsuccessful attempts at the triple toe seemed to take up a lot of time in the second half .... but I'll admit that back in 1994, I was sitting in the kitchen in Hamilton, Ontario, absolutely ROOOOOTING for her ! ... sometimes, that's just how it is ...right place, right time, right chemistry and doing just well enough
no need to slam oksana...she deserved the win, and she is beautiful, seriously. sarah hughes on the other hand, people should remember how we in the states were handed that ridiculous win after 9/11. Hughes had said she never skated that way before...and well, she never did again. pfft.
Oksana excelled because she placed her faith in GOD. She prayed daily & he answered her prayers directing her path. She was the real deal the LORD GOD made it so. God is greater than man. You haters need to repent for all the evil you carry in your hearts towards Oksana & others like her. God protects the widow & orphan. Repent & make restitution to Baiul. Write her a letter of apology. Let go of the hatred that keeps you enslaved.
Oksana was not technically perfect, but her program was so much better and memorable than Nancy Kerrigan, one of the reasons being that her music was recognizable to everyone. Kerrigan's program was just plain DULL.
I love Brian Orser but his comment that jumps were ‘perfect’ wasn’t accurate pre halfway point. She had a double footed landings on her second jump (the flip). And then her last triple as well. BUT her artistry was far superior and morenatural than Nancy’s posed and representational stoic movements. Oksana had an internal magic and emotion. Nancy was cold to watch.
Her vs Nancy- Here's my take on it: Nancy did two decent jump combo's and one was the triple triple. That weak looking 2 toe after Oksana's 2 Axel hardly counts as a combination. But then Oksana at least went for the 3 flip even though it was two footed. Both landed the 3 loop and Lutz, but Nancy still had her legs crossed low in the landing and didn't have that extra to check out a little early like Oksana, who seemed lighter on her feet, though she took longer to set up. Both did very basic footwork, but Oksana did more of that performing on her toes not really doing much moving footwork. Their spins were both good, but different. It was like apples and oranges. Nancy did the more traditional spins, but It seems the European judges tend to favor the more unusual positions, except of course Great Britain which is the least European of all the countries in Europe (but that's a whole different topic:-). Then there was the factor that Nancy was ahead after the short. But putting this all together, it still seems like a toss up and it depends where you put the emphasis. Personally, I still can't make up my mind on this one. It was a tough call.
Although Baiul's jump content wasn't as strong as either Kerrigan or Chen, what struck me was Baiul's footwork. She was just so much faster than Kerrigan, and the transitions were much more intricate. Remember that footwork and speed count towards the technical score as well, so perhaps that's how the judges justified it. I would have liked it if Chen had won, as Oksana didn't have the jumps, and Kerrigan just isn't very likable.
Since this was a controversial win, the comments on this video are very entertaining. Some of the comments are so funny; I'm rolling on the floor laughing. But guess who's probably not laughing? I'm sure to this day Nancy probably ponders these results in private and cries out "WHY, WHY".
Why are people so insensitive to the result of the program that Baiul did back then? I mean, she deserved more than what you are currently giving her.......
Me too and I am an American!!!!! My hubby and I saw the skating hall in Lillehammer in May.Its shabby looking and there is some graffiti on the building.
well said. We (americans) have certainly NOT dominated this sport. Russia and Europe has always has the upper hand. But that doesn't bother me in the least. I can't believe people are arguing about this sooo many years later!
I am not convinced the triple toe was two footed so I would have given her credit for the jump as the judges did. Under the new COP ( if we can still call it new) she would have been awarded for turning the flip so the results would be the same under the new system.
Well she did some good triples, i mean the salchow and loop were really good. Yeah the technical mark shouldnt have been that high, but i really dont care because i didnt want nancy to win.
Honestly to this day I would have given Oksana a 5.7 and 5.9 and Nancy a 5.8 and 5.8 and Oksana still would have won on the technical mark. If Nancy had landed her triple flip she would have won
@itzjoeymac You are of course the exception :). You are indeed awesome! What other country has over 800 military bases and installations, in every nook and cranny of the world?
@victoriaindigo..nancy only doubled her first jump (the flip). And she verbalized over and over that she wanted the media and everyone to leave her alone, she said she just wanted to skate. She didnt give a shit if oksana paid attention to her or not. Oksana skated well, but NOT AT ALL challening.
both performances were great, but I just don't understand how Nancy lost with a 3/3 and the most difficult jump being 3 minutes into the program. She had no business getting a 5.9 for technical merit....two judges put Oksana in 3rd behind Chen Lu....
for technical merit? Because Lu Chen was superior technically to both her and Kerrigan....Lu Chen landed 6 triples...2 triple lutzes also...something that neither Kerrigan or Baiul did
The female commentator remarked at the end of the program that Oksana Baiul's freeskate was not as strong as Nancy Kerrigan's. How true. Then you hear the astonishment in her voice as she realizes that the judges actually had the gall to place Baiul ahead of Kerrigan (and Yuka Sato and Lu Chen) in the free skate. She was refreshingly honest!
I can't understand the 5.8s let alone 5.9s for the first mark. This is 5.7 at the highest. I could see a 5.8 or 5.9 for the second mark. Nancy lost the gold medal a year earlier.
I am almost scared. I NEVER thought I would see the day you and I would agree on results. Noone else seems to think Stojko outskated Urmanov. And of course Nancy skated like a lady and Oksana like a girl. I would've actually placed T/D above both of the 2 Russian dance teams. The only place I think marks could've gone either way was GG over MD.
To hear Nancy’s awkward responses in the interview at the beginning made me cringe. Maybe they should’ve spent less time with those Vera Wang outfits and more time with media training. Anyone ever notice that the skaters that had Vera Wang’s outfits on like Michelle Kwan and Nathan Chen didn’t do so well at the Olympics? Maybe she should stick with wedding dresses
Nancy had a triple/triple and triple/double and Oksana had a wobbly double/double. Oksana also two-footed two of her triples, only landing three clean triples (lutz, loop, and salchow). Even those triples were entered without much choreographic content compared to the back spiral into the loop and the semi-circular footwork preceding the triple salchow/double toe from Kerrigan. Baiul had personality but in a sporting event her first mark should have sunk her chances of winning. Technical scores of 5.8 and even a 5.9 for a performance with three clean triples? This was 100% the incorrect result. Debbie Wilkes was correct.
well ok 5.6 and 5.8 then for O and N respectively. Nancy wasn't a 5.9 IMO. Again, I personally feel Lu Chen was better than both of them, even despite the fall/touchdown. A much more complete program.
As for Chen I would have had no problem with her winning the LP (she for sure should have beaten Baiul who clearly deserved only 3rd or 4th in the LP) but she wouldnt have beaten Nancy overall even if she had won the long with Nancy 2nd, as she was 4th in the short to Nancys 1st.
Nancy's more complex program should've been awarded the gold. Anyone can "prance and look cute" on the ice but to add complexity and higher difficulty is what makes a true champion, which oksana did not do.
Calm down! Even skaters of today are saying how much their NOVICE programs are more difficult than hers. Oksana was a beautiful skater but her program was just WEAK! Under the current skating system, nancy would've won. Such a shame!!!
Technically this program is a joke. At best on par with Harding earlier as both did only 3 clean triples, but Harding actually had an incredible triple flip which Baiul two footed, while Baiul had a very good triple loop which Harding two footed. Since Harding got 5.5s and 5.6s for technical that is all Baiul deserved to, a 5.5 or 5.6 for technical. Artistic 5.8 at best since she finished behind the music and the program was not masterpiece. Gold medal no way.
What to watch for: Oksana's "Kathrine Hepburn-type" crocodile tears. They deserved a higher score than what her skating program received. Talk about emotion and a P.C. upbringing carrying the day. These judges made no pretense at having an honor code and integrity.
That would be going "The hardship route," through life, and overcoming those circumstance, something the media loves to run with and try to make the rest of us "suffer" along with. Really tired of all the pity extended to her, she won the gold, for Christ sake, mostly BECAUSE of her disadvantaged background which made her a sympathetic figure and media-milking story. OK?????? (Over and out.)
funny how you can call Oksana Baiul out on her 'emotions' at the kiss and cry section when scores came out, and nothing about Tara Lipinski's screaming fest after HER own scores came out :/ Bias much?
True, her overall artistic impression did edge Nancy (IMO at least) as she skated with a ton of personality and musicality. But her technical marks were still far too high. Please note that I'm not a fan of either Baiul or Kerrigan. As boring as I find Kerrigan, she was still a much more solid skater overall. I personally would've had her first in the LP with Lu Chen in 2nd and Yuka Sato in 3rd.
I love Yuma Sato wish she more credit she may not be a best jumper but her spins Best footwork from that night and her programs were not too juvenile but it had a youthful unlike Oksana sad what happened to her
I’m Ukrainian by the way there are a few that say Oksana didn’t win Tanya was 4 that night good jumper and spinner but poor posture and not that has Chen lu Baiul was 5th
Baiul program was so julivenie no footwork unless you call her posing in the center weak spins that weren’t held long twofootedd jumpps Yuka sato 5.6/5.8 Chen she doubled triple and touched down 5.7/5.8 spins poitsions needed work spirals not long but like spilt jumps with footwork mature choreography Nancy good timing jumps spins gorgeous spirals 5.9 5.9 Oksana 5.5/5.7 it was rushed shaky She had potential to be a ice dancer with her swan exhibition she got too much fame too fast this is a recycled program from 1992
@@julielabelle2907 My appreciation for Sato's skating has gone up over the years. Her basics were incredible. But in terms of artistry, she was a poorly packaged skater with poor choice of costumes and an unflattering hair cut. I know none of these things should matter but still ...
I am looking at the final scores and I notice the Polish, Check ,Ukraine, East German, and still communist China picked Oksana 1st.I say East German because that judge used to skate for East Germany when there were two Germanys. East German being communist. The British and Canadian judges had Oksana 3rd and USA 2nd and Japanese judge 2nd. Nancy Kerrigan had four 1st place votes and five 2nd place votes. such a discrepancy when it was supposed to be so close. Two 3rd place scores for Oksana Baiul and two 2nd place scores for Liu Chen of China. Definitely not honest judging. They must not have deducted for that two step landing and a couple of less difficult moves where the communist judges had it rigged. They joke about it now, but I knew that in 1994 and I am not laughing about it then or now. That takes the joy out of Nancy's comeback win after her brutal attack.and if there is a God in Heaven, this will be exposed for what it was. Not differing opinions, but deliberate cheating. This is worse than the thug who clubbed Nancy in the knee. Oksana will have to be content with the silver or bronze.
Adore Oksana, but in retrospect, this program was bad. She should have won bronze or silver. It might have been better for her-- slowed down her career and given her more time to develop, train, and ultimately reach her full potential.
I agree Oksana deserved no higher than a 5.7 (anything more is flat out wrong), but her artistry was vastly superior to Kerrigan. I agree as well that Lu Chen was probably better than both of them.
I thought that time might help change my mind and view this performance more fondly but more than 20 years later I'm still not feeling it. I can genuinely see why some like it and it helped perhaps that there was the whole back story and vulnerability and the perpetuated lie that Nancy was some kind of ungrateful brat but I find the choreography immature, the technical side weak and the outfit is just awful. But time has however changed my mind to see also that technically AND artistically the winner wasn't Nancy either but Lu Chen.
I completely agree with everything you said. The judges pitied the reigning world champion after her collision with Josée Chouinard from Canada in rehearsals. She just wasn't up to par with the top skaters. Looks like a junior in a pro competition. My heart breaks for Nancy. She was robbed.
Not my thing but that hair ,dress and way more appealing skate than Nancy , if she'll wear blue or red dress I'd might of thought hard about it so 🥇for UKR girl 😁😘
I'm on the Nancy train. I don't see how Oksana won...YES she was the reining WC and YES she had some personal drama with the injury the previous day and YES she had an endearing personal story being an orphan and all BUT those Technical marks were too high! All but 3 judges gave her the same or higher marks for technical merit. I don't see how. And I feel that it was REALLY lame for her to use the same program she did to win the WC. I know Katarina did that in the 1980's...but come on!!!
I remember watching the Olympics and thinking Oksana skated beautifully. She deserved to win. An awesome talent.
I agree completely and did then. OB is my all-time favorite. I admit that I wrongly thought she would repeat as gold medalist in the next Olympics as Katarina had.
Exact !!!:))
This girl's courage was completely overlooked and ignored. She was a champ for just getting out there on the ice and competing in her condition.
What girl? Oksana?

The reason I fell in love with figure skating. A brilliant program.
and then at 3:50, right as the music softens, she plies in the spin...such a beautiful moment of emotion, so unforced and connected to the natural unfolding of the musical pattern.

I said SOME of her technical content, not all of it.
A lot of it was her music. Familiar and you could feel her joy. The Somewhere portion was especially moving. She skated with joy and not like a robot.
Oksana the most beautiful and graceful ice skater I’ve ever even breathtaking to watch❤️
something so beautiful about the sense of release and brightness in the little opening of the arms at the end of the first footwork sequence...she's just so light and playful in every gesture there
I just watched that tonya vs kerrigan documentary and they said no one knew who Oksana was and that Kerrigan deserved the gold. but after watching the 2 perform...Oksana totally nailed it, it was a mix of grace, artistry and it kinda had a youthful sass to it...
MilkaA.: You've said it !!!;)) This is it: when we can forget Olympia,sports...and just enjoy!..Oksana - MOLODEZ !!!!!:)))
I was all in to Nancy Kerrigan but then I saw Oksana... No contest
She's incredible!! So relaxed, so happy, so precise in her movements. Before waking, she started skating!!
I'm so glad Oksana beat smug Saint Nancy
I'm an American and I love the Olympics more than most people in this world. If I thought I could honestly say Nancy won, I would. She did not.
My favorite skater of all time!!!
The accent is at "..not the best"!!!:))
if you mean IT factor as in a car crashing alcoholic immigrant then yes i know what you mean
It's great how this program had such musical variety. Now days it is all too common for programs to only have one theme.
Thanks a lot of posting different coverage! Interesting interview with Kerrigan. Always great to see it again from another perspective.
You know, not being all caught up in the Kerrigan drama as I was back then, I can see how she managed to pull off a win here.
Woow she is a beautiful and very elegant skater, reminds a lot to Sasha Cohen.
I bet she was one of Sasha's biggest influences In style
IT WAS AND IS ELEGANT !!!!!!!
its not just about the technical marks. her overall artistic program edged nancy's. it was very very close.
the only person on earth that could inspires me and help me pass very dark times haha yet she doesn't know who I am :p
watching as someone who's not caught up with the Soviet block/American divide therefore am not biased towards either side politically, Oksana's routine and performance, I think is better than Kerrigan's.
I always felt Oksana won by a MILE
Rod Black makes my skin crawl.
Hughes had said she never skated that way before...and well, she never did again. pfft.
Yes. Oksana did two-foot her last triple toe.. it was revealed in slow-motion replay on "nancy kerrigan 1994 ice wars fluff"
Beautiful
My hubby and I saw the skating hall in Lillehammer in May.Its shabby looking and there is some graffiti on the building.
cc is hilarious I must say but (on topic) I have such great memories of the 94 olympics.
If skating was judged on grace and beauty only, there would be no question Oksana won
Honestly to this day I would have given Oksana a 5.7 and 5.9 and Nancy a 5.8 and 5.8 and Oksana still would have won on the technical mark. If Nancy had landed her triple flip she would have won
She skated her fucking ass off. And l mean the 16 year old.
4:17 "So far the jumps have been perfect." ??? She two-footed her first two triples. What program is he watching?
I agree that the best skate of the night was by Lu Chen.
@kamranii lol... Hey I'm an American and I know Oksana is the RULE. Btw, we must be pretty awesome for you to care that much ;-)
both performances were great, but I just don't understand how Nancy lost with a 3/3 and the most difficult jump being 3 minutes into the program. She had no business getting a 5.9 for technical merit....two judges put Oksana in 3rd behind Chen Lu....
for technical merit?
Because Lu Chen was superior technically to both her and Kerrigan....Lu Chen landed 6 triples...2 triple lutzes also...something that neither Kerrigan or Baiul did
I’m supraised no judge gave Nancy 59 for technical merit as well
The female commentator remarked at the end of the program that Oksana Baiul's freeskate was not as strong as Nancy Kerrigan's. How true. Then you hear the astonishment in her voice as she realizes that the judges actually had the gall to place Baiul ahead of Kerrigan (and Yuka Sato and Lu Chen) in the free skate. She was refreshingly honest!
I think it should have been Nancy, but both overcame huge obstacles and both are amazing skaters.
Her outfit hurts my eyes. Bless her heart ;-)
I can't understand the 5.8s let alone 5.9s for the first mark. This is 5.7 at the highest. I could see a 5.8 or 5.9 for the second mark. Nancy lost the gold medal a year earlier.
True that. Thanks. Still friends? Good. peace.
She didnt have 5 triples. She only had 3 clean triples. Two were two footed.
The judges were very generous with this girl.
Bullshit you freaking troll
Those who won deserved what they got. Bet no one said this before. Cry more.
The Canadian judge who gave her a 5.5 for technical merit was the only accurate mark.
Its so funny watching this now days my Novice long program had more difficult elements.
Glory to UKRAINE!!! and to Dnipropetrovsk !!!
IMENNO TAK !!!:))
@kamranii Nah, Oksana did not skate her best. The best skate of the night was, actually, Chen Lu.
technical merit isn't just jumps otherwise your argument would be correct.
you can always watch Rachel Flatt's performances...
;)
5.8 for 5 triples, just 1 lutz and no triple triple ????!!!!! can t understand...
She's not a boozer seriously Connecticut law required anyone who drove drunk to attend alcohol education in order to get their license
Did I just hear the announcer refer to her as a "sexy fawn"? Isn't she like 14 here?
@itzjoeymac I wish it was that simple.
well ok 5.6 and 5.8 then for O and N respectively.
She had a touchdown wished they put a slow section in her program as well she definitely matured over the years beautiful skater
Someone with a brain, Finally! This was just sloppy!
Is it ok if I take it out on the media. which has made her the second-coming of Joan of Arc?
Robby Bonter .....seriously? Wow.
funny how you can call Oksana Baiul out on her 'emotions' at the kiss and cry section when scores came out, and nothing about Tara Lipinski's screaming fest after HER own scores came out :/ Bias much?
Have a nice day.
Baiul program was so julivenie no footwork unless you call her posing in the center weak spins that weren’t held long twofootedd jumpps
Yuka sato 5.6/5.8 Chen she doubled triple and touched down 5.7/5.8 spins poitsions needed work spirals not long but like spilt jumps with footwork mature choreography Nancy good timing jumps spins gorgeous spirals 5.9 5.9
Oksana 5.5/5.7 it was rushed shaky
She had potential to be a ice dancer with her swan exhibition she got too much fame too fast this is a recycled program from 1992
@@julielabelle2907 My appreciation for Sato's skating has gone up over the years. Her basics were incredible. But in terms of artistry, she was a poorly packaged skater with poor choice of costumes and an unflattering hair cut. I know none of these things should matter but still ...
@@gk891 what you didn’t say anything good about it how could you say appreciate her footwork is so fast and awesome
It might have been better for her-- slowed down her career and given her more time to develop, train, and ultimately reach her full potential.
minuto 2:47 musica q saco #arianagrande que poco original de Ariana ..... que plagio verdad¡¡
I agree Oksana deserved no higher than a 5.7 (anything more is flat out wrong), but her artistry was vastly superior to Kerrigan.
I agree as well that Lu Chen was probably better than both of them.
Actually, it's very simple. Somebody has to run the show like it or not. But nevermind that neanderthal stuff... Look at Oksana!
0:44
Ohh. And you forgot the letter "e." LOL
NANCY WAS BORING !!!!! ABSOLUT NO ARTISTIC !!!!!!!!!:(((
3 triples.
Not my thing but that hair ,dress and way more appealing skate than Nancy , if she'll wear blue or red dress I'd might of thought hard about it so 🥇for UKR girl 😁😘
I wanted to be her ... inspite of my weight..
5.9? For what?!
For beating Nancy snotty ass.
@@charliseedwards422 Technical merit please
the day when jazz hands dazzled the judges
i really loved her but franckly she should have finished 2nd or 3rd...
She's prancing around...that's it. I totally disagree that she won!!
