plumeria66 Agreed. Oksana was far superior. Nancy Kerrigan, was very beautiful and skated very well, but robotic. Oksana is a total natural; a superstar.
What a sweet and gorgeous angel Oksana is. I will never forget the nasty comment Nancy Kerrigan made about the dress Oksana was wearing. And Oksana was barely a tiny 16 year old little girl from Ukraine, while Kerrigan was already 24 years old !!! Oksana: you stole the hearts of millions of people here in the USA and all over the world. Not only Oksana is gorgeous, but extremely feminine, discrete and s delicate as the sweetest flower in the prairie.
You need to watch this massively beautiful presentation from Oksana Baiul... It is simply breathtaking, and this gorgeous Ukrainian girl was barely 16 years old !!!. Open this link and look for this: ruclips.net/video/9kLH9oRQcLc/видео.html
Oksana Baiul knows how to interpret the music, otherwise Nancy Kerrigan skates like a distraction from prom. Oksana as a pro was disappointing however, I know she had many personal issues and lead to decline in professional pro skaters skatings.
Rob J I agree, however, Julia Lipnitskya was pretty close in her prime. She is the Russian girl who killed it during the team event in Sochi, securing the gold for the Russian team as the girl in the red coat skating to music from Schindler's List at just 15 years old. She struggled in the singles competition (placing 5th I believe) as a result of the media attention after her gold medal win for the Russian team, as she and members of her family were followed everywhere they went, constantly stopped and intruded upon (listening devices were found in her locker at her rink in Moscow where she went back to train for the single events after her team win) and swarmed by paps and fans (or stans) constantly, with the whole country taking immense interest in her every move, placing huge expectations and pressures on her til she cracked. Post Olympics, she was heavily scrutinized about her weight, as she was going through puberty and her body changing affecting her skating, which is completely normal with girls having to relearn balance and control and find their center for jumps and such and she began to struggle, but seemed to find her groove, until ultimately after disappointing (not terrible, with some amazing programs and skates, but inconsistent with others) until her 2016/2017 season, caused by what we now know to he complications with Anorexia Nervosa affecting her strength and jumping, with muscle cramps and injuries due to malnutrition leading to her stay at a treatment center in Israel and then her retirement. She was literally bullied and picked apart for her weight during the phases of puberty where her body was changing, despite her never actually being fat or overweight. She truly had beautiful artist ability that reminds me of Oksana Baiul. She used her whole body in a way to was beautiful and naturally flowy, with amazing musicality, whereas many of the girls I see now look awkward overusing their arms and not connecting to the music. It's just a shame that people bullied and picked her apart for her weight and normal body changes during puberty, already a stressful, awkward, uncomfortable and self conscious time in a girl's life. Coupled with the intense, constant and even scary (she chose not to live in her flat, rather staying in a hotel in order to feel safe considering she was stopped on the street by strangers, including old men, wanting her attention and more, thinking they knew her and were owed pictures with her or her information to hang out with or call and be her friend or expecting something in return for gifts and fandom, with people trying to get her address and phone number, even approaching her family members and training rink) intrusion from paparazzi and media and bullied for her appearance on social media , as a naturally very shy, reserved and private person, it was all clearly too much for her, leading to her starving herself and excessive working out and training to slim down to be super skinny, trying to get back to the prepubescent body everyone expected and hounded her about. Naturally, it affected her health and athletic and physical strength and ability, and as a resulting in her retiring from competitive/professional figure skating to work on her physical and mental health out of the fishbowl. She was truly amazing and beautiful and talented and unique, and her Olympic short program and free skate for the 2014 Olympics are my faves after Oksana's. They were incredible performances and honestly reminded me of Oksana's because of how artistically beautiful and technically amazing they were!
Read about her life as a child and you will cry with sadness. One of the greatest moments in my life to this day is when she took gold. I didn't even know where Ukraine was. Now, I've been there 12 times.
The thing that always strikes me about her skating (and this has been mentioned by the commentators) is her arm position. It's amazing. She's NEVER out of position once during the entire skate.
To this day, I’ve never seen anyone like Oksana! To me she will always be the dancer, the artist, the poet, and the ice skater. She’s the first and she’s the last! Nobody can ever touch this woman. All these years later, I still get chills watching her! What a gift from God! ✌💙🙏😇
That was like watching her perform ballet on ice. I can't believe it's been more than ten years since I had known about her. Thanks to youtube, I get to relive the beauty of yesteryears.
And to the Black Swan's waltz, too -- what better dance music than Tchaikovsky! The closing is classic ballet, too. Pure artistry... she so deserved to win.
An Olympic Champion!! Beautiful artistry, skates like a dancer. Felt as thought I was watching the ballet. NOT a skating competition. She's an artist!! artist mark breaks all tie breakers....case in point. She is the Olympic Champion.
I don't know where I stand on this. Granted, there skaters from years prior that were superior jumpers. At the same time, there was nothing special, artistically or technically, about Nancy's skating. I almost wish that Kristy Yamaguchi has stuck around to try to defend her Gold. What's with all the trash talking and division between oksona and Nancy. They are both beautiful yet different type of skaters and that's okay. Pinning one against the other is just wrong, it shows a lack of consideration for both girls feelings hard work and training. It shows insecurity.
To this date nobody can skate with so much artistry and emotion and glide on the ice like a prima ballerina as Oksana Baiul. It's like everytime she skate it's so captivating and magical .
The most impressive short program I've ever seen! I was a young girl in 1994 but I keep coming back to this performance year after year. She was one of a kind!
Oksana is my favorite figure skater, her artistry and interpretation of the music are such in a league of her own. She may not be the cleanest skater with some of her jumps being two footed or sometimes wonky, but her overall presentation and ability to captivate the audience with her skating is what makes her unique and special. She's perfection!
Simply brings me to tears, the most moving moment in sports history for me. I remember watching it live and was literally on the floor by the end in awe. So emotional in a haunting way she earned her Gold people debate it at times but if you watch this in isolation you realize it is just like Olga Korbut in 1972 just something so different and perfect it could not be denied. When I am down like today I watch it and it reminds me to move forward, just so emotional.
The All time best of any short program I have ever seen in any Ladies Figure Skating Championship, Oksana Baiul was the best of the bests during her time, flawless!
I love her! Her programs were so different then any of the others then. She was so graceful and utterly mesmerizing. She will always be my favorite women's ice skater.
I remember watching this as a 12 year old being absolutely mesmerized by her balletic movements and beautiful skating. Long before the days of rewinding to rewatch that one view stayed in my memory for 28 years until I finally found this on RUclips today ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
She was a beautiful doll… I love how delicate she looks skating, the way she’s skating makes it look easy (I know is not easy). No doubt she was one of the best!!!
Oksana....how much more she could've done with her talent. She could've been the best skater ever in history. The purity of technique, the impeccable form and natural musicality. That is the most wonderfully airy double axel I've ever seen.
You simply don't understand Oksana achieved her zenith---Olympic gold. It wasn't possible for her to achieve beyond her Olympic dream. Why? Because she didn't have any support at all. Oksana didn't have anyone to help her. Baiul was surrounded by bloodsucking predators & takers. It nearly killed her to survive those around her. All the hardships & cruelties she endured took a toll. An artist needs a nurturing, caring, supportive environment to create & sustain the mental & creative energies of artistic ability.
She marches to her own drum beat. Not like today where the skaters rush from one jump to the next trying to score technical points and show zero artistry.
Scoring has changed tremendously since this program was skated back in 1994. Sadly, there is very little artistry left in figure skating and it has lost most of it's luster as a result.
Artistic Gymnastics is the same way. Today it’s all about pushing difficult skill after skill. Takes away from the beauty of the sport I fell in love with.
Этой программой Оксана вместе со своим тренером Галиной Змеевской отдали дань гению 3 -хкратной олимпийской чемпионки по фигурному катанию Сони Хени из Норвегии

Thanks for posting. I remember that I was brought to tears watching her. I didn't think that was possible. She so deserved the win. I remember Nancy's awful poor sportsman behavior when they had to wait for them to find the music to play (for medal ceremony). She acted like a brat more than once.
I remember this. Nancy thought she has the medal granted just for the drama and surely will had a lot of Hollywood producers waiting for her to win to throw loads of money to her. She was good, ok, but not perfect.
Baiul also double-footed her 3-Lutz landing; always been a problem for her! I don't know how she was ahead of Surya? Well we know, but no one will ever admit to it! ;-)
Oksana was just barely 16 years old gorgeous and scared little girl, while Nancy Kerrigan was already a 24 year old woman. Nancy Kerrigan: go and eat a cold taco !
It will take 100 years or more to match this elegant masterpiece. Timeless. Perfection. Oksana Baiul elevated herself into the pantheon of great Olympic champions with her performances at those Olympic games. She emerged as the greatest of all the champions crowned at those Olympics. Oksana Baiul = The Legend of Lillehammer. Nothing could stop her march to Olympic greatness. Baiul's fame transcended her sport. This Swan is the greatest.skater to lace up the boots. Mesmerizing. Exquisite grace. This is my favorite Baiul performance and then the Swan.
I totally agree. When I saw this on TV at the time I felt the same way. Then when there was all this uproar over her gold, I couldn't understand why anyone would think Nancy Kerrigan had any edge over her. Oksana was the artist in ice and Kerrigan could have been a robot.
The commentator hits the nail on the head at 3:40, "that was magical" She should have gotten at least 5.9s across the board for the second mark, I would have given it a 6
She danced beautiful like a ballerina. Never made any mistake. I love her, especially because of her awkward background. And now she achieves the gold medal. She deserves it, for a 1000 percent. I love you, soulmate. Very kind regards from the Netherlands
@@biancamichelle11 Well, I don't know, was that specified back then? Was layback leg position specified as technical? (I could look it up but I don't feel like it) I think it could also affect the presentation mark, as falling on a jump and two footing a jump can also affect the presentation mark. I always felt the presentation mark was rather ambiguous.
Oksana was a controversial gold medal winner, but this program, and her exhibition to The Swan, live on as among the best ever. She was appropriately placed here on the strength of her second mark.
@@mathildewesendonck7225 Her long program was pretty weak. I don't even think she did a combo. Or maybe she threw something in at the end. Kerrigan had a 3-3. But Oksana should have won the short program.
idolfan9495 she didn't win the short because of the mistake on the triple Lutz. She was definitely superior artistically in this program. But their long programs were more equal artistically, and Oksana made more obvious mistakes and had not nearly as difficult of a program. That's the controversy.
@@ADEAL918 She had a great 3-3 and Lutz, but if you go back and look at all her other jumps they were all kinda wonky. 3Lo had a very tight landing, 3S off axis, 2A off axis and wonky landing. Meanwhile Oksana had huge and feathery light jumps. She did an extra 2A and had the 3F as well (remember how hard Kwan got hammered for replacing the flip with the toe in the SP!) so under the current judging system she would actually have a significant base value lead. Yes, Oksana had the 2 foot on the flip and the weird rushed ending combo, but in the end I think the popped flip cost Kerrigan the gold.
Thanks for posting this! She's been one of my favorite figure skaters (very short list) from the first time I saw her perform -- one of the most memorable, for sure. Not just for her amazing talent, but for her presence, creativity, style and poise, both as an athlete and artist. I love being able to see these past performances again!
When I watch Oksana skate it's like another level! Am I watching figure skating or ballet? I'm always mesmerized when I watch her skating. She oozes artistic perfection on ice.
Daanava Baiul helped to choreograph her technical and long programs. She didn't have a real technical coach or a big team to do those things for her. She had to set some of her own elements into the programs. Her choregraphers gave an interview where she credited Oksana for adding the Petipa choreography. She was a rare talent.
I'd seen Oksana Baiul skate a year before the '94 Olympics and was just mesmerized by how beautifully she skated. When all the drama swirled around Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding, I remember thinking neither of them would take gold anyway. They couldn't beat Oksana, she was just at another level of talent and artistry.
All the other ones, especially Nancy Kerrigan, were skating like cheerleaders. Oksana was dancing on ice. She deserved the gold.
plumeria66 Agreed. Oksana was far superior. Nancy Kerrigan, was very beautiful and skated very well, but robotic. Oksana is a total natural; a superstar.

Poetry in motion. Sometimes I think Kerrigan got robbed of a Gold medal, then I come back and watch Oksana again. No comparison, Oksana deserved it.
Oksana Baiul knows how to interpret the music, otherwise Nancy Kerrigan skates like a distraction from prom. Oksana as a pro was disappointing however, I know she had many personal issues and lead to decline in professional pro skaters skatings.
She's one with the ice. They belong together
Yes. The young lady deserved her way to our hearts. As for Nancy, everything that she exudes is tastless and disrespectful.
And there's never been another skater like her since. Love Oksana 💖🕊

I totally agree with everything you said here. Oksana, truly the most beautiful figure skater in modern history of the sport.
Ballet on ice. Phenomenal!
This is when skating was good
I was a child and I felt in love of her performance, the music and charisma, this program is actually ageing but it doesn't lose its relevance.
Quads? I prefer arms, holding positions, and expression. Brava Oksana.
She always just glided across the ice effortlessly. A breath of fresh air
Какое совершенство на льду..
The commentator hits the nail on the head at 3:40, "that was magical"
She should have gotten at least 5.9s across the board for the second mark, I would have given it a 6
Настоящий балет на льду,хореография высокая и техника хорошая
My favourite ladies' performance ever.
Same here!
I forgot how amazing a skater she was. No one compares today imo.
She's the prettiest little thing and absolutely amazing athlete
The most beautiful Hollywood kind of stories that deserve to be there on cinema screens, world champion's most emotional moments of a kind fans
Second favorite double axel ever - the absolute best was Midori Ito's in 1988 Olympic short program.
You've piqued my curiosity. Now I'll have to check out 1988...
Chills baby, chills. Amazing.
Beautiful ballet lines on ice. She peggy flemming and sasha cohen will always be my favorites. I love her
She took the skating world by storm.
her jumps were so damn grand in height!!! epic
Comparing them, Oksana was the clear winner. She was built for gold.
She danced beautiful like a ballerina. Never made any mistake. I love her, especially because of her awkward background. And now she achieves the gold medal. She deserves it, for a 1000 percent.
I love you, soulmate. Very kind regards from the Netherlands
Oksana's interpretation of the music was beautiful. Her artistic expression was hard to match. She deserved the Gold.
I would like to know how some of those judges felt she coluld improve her presentation on this program. 5.7 seriously?
Two footed landing
Layback leg position, maybe
The two foot landing at the beginning. The commentator even said so.
@@L.Spencer that would be the technical marks. The presentation is the artistic marks.
@@biancamichelle11 Well, I don't know, was that specified back then? Was layback leg position specified as technical? (I could look it up but I don't feel like it) I think it could also affect the presentation mark, as falling on a jump and two footing a jump can also affect the presentation mark. I always felt the presentation mark was rather ambiguous.
a beautiful ballerina on ice! She is amazing
I've never seen anyone else who can dance as beautifully, elegantly, and gracefully as Oksana Baiul on ice. A truly extraordinary talent!!
I remember in 94 USA today doing a full spread on all the potential female medalists. Listing all their pros and cons, it was something.
Оксана и Галина Змиевская, браво! В те годы, в тех условиях вы совершили подвиг!
She took such joy in her skating! Such grace and artistry! She was a pleasure to watch.
Oksana was a controversial gold medal winner, but this program, and her exhibition to The Swan, live on as among the best ever. She was appropriately placed here on the strength of her second mark.
Not to mention that compared to Oksana, Nancy Kerrigan looked like a Bigfoot on ice. :)
idolfan9495 Whats controversial about her? I think no one outside the USA had a problem with Oksanas Gold medal.
Ballerina on ice! Great!
Бесподобно!
Oksana was absolutely the best
My favorite figure skating outfit ever.
I personally prefer Krist Yamaguchi's outfits( both) from Albertville, but this comes close
What kind of commentators can ignore such breathtaking artistry, only scrutinizing on her two footed landing? Geez.
Amazing, good for her she dealt with so much in her childhood ❤️
When I watch Oksana skate it's like another level! Am I watching figure skating or ballet? I'm always mesmerized when I watch her skating. She oozes artistic perfection on ice.
Daanava Baiul helped to choreograph her technical and long programs. She didn't have a real technical coach or a big team to do those things for her. She had to set some of her own elements into the programs. Her choregraphers gave an interview where she credited Oksana for adding the Petipa choreography. She was a rare talent.
This is especially touching in today’s world. Pray for Ukraine.
Это самое лучшее что я видела ,ну просто нереально что то Какая крутая Оксана
Oskana displayed beauty & elegance as well as maturity beyond her teenaged years. Simply marvelous!
Beautiful! Graceful! Amazing! She had ballet training also, she could have been a great ballerina as well...
