I personally pay little attention to fancy jumps. How the skater makes me feel with the music and her grace is how I judge. My favorite performance of all time was “Fields of Gold” by Michelle Kwan. She never won gold but in my opinion is as every bit as good if not better than many who got the gold.

I don't think that's any possible now since the ladies from russia, specifically Tutberidze's team, already turned it into a battle of who can do more difficult jumps and ofc quads, focusing on the technical side of the sport while utterly lacking in artistry. That's so obvious when Sotnikova & Zagitova won the Olympics over the uber artistic Yuna Kim & Evgenia Medvedeva. No more art on the ice.

@@iamayanakuzunoha430 Ice skating also used to be about perfection and technical ability. If a skater so much as stumbled there would be a loud gasp from the audience and if they fell it meant a loss. I wish she had stayed focused on her career as a skater, lord knows how far she could have gone. I watched her in 1994 in Lillehammer and I knew she was going to win that Gold Medal. In spite of the Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding fiasco, she managed to snatch that Gold right away from Kerrigan's hands who thought she was so good no one could beat her. Olympic skating is the sport side of skating. Its fine as it is. It is about how high and well a skater executes & masters complex jumps, spins, spirals and all the elements. How fast they skate and all the things that go into making skating an athletic sport. I like that they are measuring & grading for flexibility, precision, speed, power, edge control, body control, great balance & endurance etc. Go see a pro skating show or a skating exhibition if you want to see the artistry and show biz side of the sport. I happen to love the Olympic sport with its unpredictability and the pressure of competition. Every athlete has a personality that reveals itself whenever she/he competes. I like competition. I can also enjoy a good showbiz performance too, where skaters reveal their creativity & personalities as entertainers.

Listen to the Hamilton.. he knows of what he speaks: you cannot put a mark on the excellence and depth of the art here. This is the artistic program of a pro show skater. It's a performance art piece... the emphasis is NOT on the jumps but on line and quality of edge and movement. 3t, 3s, and 2a were all landed on one leg. She's not the securest jumper in her pro career b/c she got tall, but the flow out matched the flow in. She does not need to display all six triples or a combination to win an artistic program. The posing, body rolls, shoulders, arm placement, and the headpiece and veil all convey a character, story, and tone of the piece as well as accelerate the tension toward the climax of the music. Oksana is spectacular here... especially the speed and unique positions of her spinning and the control and precision of the footwork sequence. She was always noted for precise balletic step sequences on her toes which is so difficult to accomplish not many other female skaters from her generation could do them.

WOW! Nicely articulated critique of this performance. personally its hard for me to watch the mechanics of this performance. I'm a musician and the music, the costume, and the all around mesmerizing aura she creates has me in a trance when i watch her. I actually had a chance to see her perform this routine live in Atlanta in 1995-96. Cant remember the exact year but i DEFINITELY remember seeing Oksana perform this. When we left my wife kept saying "YOU LIKE HER DONT YOU"! I wanted to run screaming back into the arena and jump off the upper balcony seats to shut her up! Of course i liked her. Shes a gold medalist who brought something very different to the world of figure skating and i knew, after watching her skate, i had just witnessed perfection in a sporting event. she is a legend!

paul pecena it is better to execute a lesser degree of difficulty to a higher degree of perfection a lot of the time... although there are many moments that are glorious "failures" when people take amazing risk... we can appreciate that too...like when Michell Kwan & partner attempted a throw triple sovkov
