  • Oksana's sensational debut to the European Chapmpiohships.
    After missing the combination jump, her shoelace came undone. She was allowed to re-skate the program and nailed everything. What a girl!

    Undeniably one of the very best skaters ever. If not THE best.
    Her strength is not technique : it is art. This is where she got her winning points.
    Deservedly so!

    To me she is the greatest of all. I'm amazed at the beauty,grace, delicacy & the sheer complexity of what she was able to produce on the ice. Despite all of the glaring disadvantages she had to endure against all of the overwhelming obstacles she overcame. I don't think any other skater could be stripped to bare bones & toil under all of the disadvantages & obstacles she faced yet still produce at such a high level. 4 me this is why she's the greatest ever.

    Oksana’s strength might not be technical but it sure is artistry. She is a very lovely skater, she floats on the ice and is so beautiful to watch her dance on the ice. Loved her! Good for you Oksana not everything have to be technical but artistry counts as well. Loved this girl, she was magnifiqué!!!! 😍😍😍😍🌹🌹🌹🌹💐💐💐💐💥💥💥🌟🌟🌟🌟

    Oksana battled her demons off the ice, so why are you thinking that she's battling them on the ice? Since the death of her mom at such a young age, she never knew the love of her mom and the skating that comes from within- is her balletic grace that is her strength. She is everything she wanted to be- a graceful ballerina on the ice as opposed to one on stage. She may look delicate, but really, she's a very tough gal!

    Baiul was so far ahead of her time vav artistry and musicalty which were flawless. Artistically she changed her sport in just a couple of years;until her world collapsed into a black hole of grief at the death of Sergei Grinkov. A series of very destructive choices followed which detoured her career downward.
    Some people try to diminish Baiul's standing by emphasizing her technical inconsistency esp vav jumping. I say: technic sans passion in art = technic in love-making-OK but not thrilling.

    This is the first time I've seen this & I don't understand why she was allowed to start from the beginning - especially since she had done two more elements (spiral step and layback spin) before she went to the referee. She is very lucky she was allowed to start from the beginning and landed the combination.

    Watching the replay of the jump combo something seems to go wrong in the lutz-her arms come loose. It's likely the lace was coming undone at that point and it threw her off big time.

    I agree-except like Baiul, Yagudin and also Viktor Petrenko were arrested at least once for drunk driving. Yagudin in August 2003, and Petrenko in January 2004 on suspician of driving under the infuence-both arrests occurred in Conneticut. Oksana made mistakes but she has never been arrested again.

  • @faeryquene

    It was Referee Wilhelm's call. I guess he felt that perhaps the jump combo hampered by the lace coming undone (and Baiul just hadn't noticed it yet) who knows?

    Oksana was not a great technician by any stretch. Part of presentation is the exhibition of GREAT technique. Michelle Kwan was an artist with excellent technique, deep edges, straight back positions, centered spins and the correct entry into jumps.

    Ahead of her time? I hardly think so. For someone who was truly ahead of her time, look at Janet Lynn - decades before Baiul.

    Galindo & Bobek weren't arrested in Connecticut. Bobek for drug racketeering very serious. Lipinsky & Eldridge caught speeding. Figure skating is NOT a pristine sport mixing minors,big money with greedy adults hanging around manipulating, living off or compitng against kids for a living makes for a negative corrupting environment for a minor- no?

    Hmm, today stopping like this, she would place so low. She would not be allowed a do over. Her 2-2 combo would not count at all and there would be -5 points for the interruption.
    How the rules changed.

    @faeryquene - could you or someone else help me out here - wasn't there another Eastern European figure skater at the height of Baiul's career who sort of imitated her, very obviously? I don't remember the girl's name. She was blond and wore heavy eye makeup and had a similar nickname or something. I can't remember much more.

    Oksana/Pasha Gritshuk the Olympic champion Ice Dancer-I remember they even did a funny 'fluffy' on it-I think on NBC. It may even be here on youtube. It was during the '98 Olympics I believe. Oksana/Pasha denied that she was 'copying' Baiul, and she even called the 'other' Oksana 'a criminal'. Of course one thing Baiul has never been accused of is being an adulteress-like Gritchuk. ;)

  • @iceroby72

    I don't think so! She started her deviant behavior while she started to make some money. She left Galina Czismeskaia and begin to struggle with everything. After that her jumping ability disappeared (even if I doubt she ever had some) and her private life turned in a disaster. Yagudin, Witt, kulik, Grinkova... They all moved to US and they didn't act like she does.

  • @uwoeric
    @uwoeric 15 лет назад

    I don't know if that's true, she got lower marks because she was a new skater on the scene and the judges tend to hold back on the marks until the skater has been around longer.
    However, Oksana didn't have to pay her dues for very long because she was scored generously at Worlds just a few months later. Actually, even in the long program here at Europeans she was scored generously.

    Yeah, telegraphing jumps is slightly unattractive. Carolina Kostner of Italy is a huge telegrapher and so was Irina Slutskya. Skaters who take a second during the lutz are more acceptable because you have to hit that outside edge, but for those who just take five seconds for every jump...it's just annoying.

    "Let's do the Twist...like we did last winter," so much posing-A LOT OF POSING-and standing still. Horrible technique.but hey: great, overdone dramatics and 2 footed landings.Those are her signatures.

    • @DarkKittycat
      @DarkKittycat 6 лет назад

      its not posing or being dramatic its dancing on artistry level you fucking uncultured peasant, its what the music in the background is for, but others are indeed: posing
      And btw there is a reason technique and performance are judged 50/50, but peasants will never understand why
      your fine taste is just as random as your username
