I work as a backend dev and decided to get the 16/512GB config. So far I haven't maximized its memory and processor in my day to day use so I can say that getting it is the right decision instead of spending more just to get the m2 air or 14inch macbook pro. I've saved a lot of money without sacrificing performance for my usecase.

Would you recommend this laptop for computer science students. I’m looking to upgrade my 2017 base 13 inch MacBook Pro. My screen is cracked and when I connect my laptop to a monitor with zoom lectures on it starts to get loud and lag a bit

@@mistahozzy for me yes. Regarding the cooling of this device, I have an existing laptop stand with fans underneath and that's where I put my macbook to keep it cool and so far I never experienced any thermal throttling. But if you're expecting to run a lot of intensive tasks that will run for a very long time that's the time I will consider the macbook pro.
But if you're just going to code most of the time and run some docker containers/emulators this device is really capable.

Solid buy man. We snagged a 512GB M1 air for my wife recently for $899 and she absolutely loves it compared to her old 15" MacBook Pro. The battery life is unreal and does all of her productivity stuff for her job as a teacher. Its easier to tote around to meetings and she never has to worry about dragging a charger along with her.
She was worried at first the display would be too small but she said after a few days its a non-issue. She texts me every few days about how much she loves it and she is a non-techie so thats high praise.

I've had this base model M1 MBA for over a year now, batterylife is still incredible. I sometimes use it docked hooked up to a 1440p monitor, and I have encountered the spinning "beachball" only rarely. If I had to buy a Macbook again, I would've gotten one of the 16gb ram model Macbooks but for right now, 8gb ram is alright. The M1 Air and even the M1 Mac Mini are still the best bang-for-buck Mac devices I've seen so far.

I wanted a travel computer (rather than bring my 7th Gen iPad) for my 3 month trip to SE Asia and when Costco discounted the 512 GB / 8GB model I jumped on it. Five weeks into the trip I am totally satisfied, even after being a Windows PC / UNIX/ Linux workstation guy for the past 30 years. I am not coding or video editing, just simple web, Excel, Word & RUclips tasks. I never dip deeply into Swap memory, surprising for a 8GB machine. The battery life is great! The lack of cooling fans is a real plus when ever you are in dusty environments. Many of us do not need high powered machines, especially when traveling. The right tool for the job at hand.

But when I am loading up the car with bunch of luggage and multiple people and across state lines, I end up leaving the computer at home and just using a tablet or my phone. I thought about getting the earlier gen Air, but still haven't, honestly probably won't unless I plan on working. If I do end up traveling by myself where I'm more in control of my space, I would be more comfortable to take it along, but haven't had that scenario yet. I don't know, I just overthink things haha. I got my MBA M1 as a Christmas gift back in 2020. I still have it today and it shows no signs of slowing down. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for when it first came out. I had issues with USB hubs and using my monitor, where my Mac would freeze, and if I shut it down and restarted it, it would become a $1000k paperweight. Now that it has gone through several years worth of updates, I haven't had that problem and everything works great. My little sister still has a MBA from 2016 or 2017 and as its on its last leg (slowing down and always connected to a charger since the battery dies fairly quickly), I always recommend the M1 MBA instantly when she complains. I seriously love this computer and even though there is a new MBA with a new redesign, I most likely won't be getting rid of my M1 MBA any time soon. This thing is a GOD TIER laptop.

The MacBook Air M1 is a Goat tier computer for Apple, it was a good value when it first came out after the M2 came out it became a better deal. Apples M2 air has a big problem in that it's in the middle of the Apple lineup, once you spec up it becomes even less of a good deal. Moving forward until Apple gets rid of selling the M1 Air or dropping the price of the M2 the M1 will be the king of their lineup in regards to cost per performance.

yah, I still think the M1 chip for the air is the best value even now in 2023. The m2 chip is obviously more powerful, but it's really overpowered for the air and gets throttled down to m1 speeds anyway and m1 air is optimized for the M1 chip so it will perform better than the m2 when the m2 is throttled in SOME use cases (most of those use cases are for basic users - but I'm a basic user these days for my laptop so it works well for me.). Now if you are looking at a MacBook Pro then obviously opt for the M2 but until they put a good cooling system back into the MacBook Air, the M1 seems to be the best option.
