Blimey, its 50 years since I saw this film, the frightening thing is that it only seems like five. Marvelous music suits the film perfectly.

I have had a Witchfinder General memories week and watched the DVD again last night. For a low budget film made back in 1968 when I was just 16 this film had such an impact on me. But the music is so beautifully haunting and I have just ordered the CD movie soundtrack from Amazon, can't wait for it to arrive. I hear the music and just imagine Ian Ogilvy flying over the fields on his horse on his way to his beautiful Sara. I intend to visit these locations and particularly want to find the church and John Lowes house if possible. Lavenham a must and Orford Castle and Kentwell where the water dunking was done. Everything still looks the same except the dirt track over the bridge is now block paved lol. Ian Ogilvy was a dish in this and still is an attractive man at the age of 74, Hilary Dwyer 72 I believe. I wonder if they ever have been back themselves to the filming locations!!! GREAT FILM thanks for posting. Must visit these locations soon and find that church! Dawn

It's amazing how in Britain you can walk around a corner or visit a seemingly ordinary village and find buildings that are 500 years old and virtually unchanged in all that time.
I live in rural Nebraska, which a hundred years or so ago was uninhabited prairie. And they didn't really get around to building really durable structures until about 80 years ago, so nothing here is very old.

I live in a circa 1780 colonial house in New Hampshire and find it amazing how parts of the country have little to no colonial history while others have had settlers since at least the 1600s.

Fun fact. The castle in the footage from Orford was built in 1173

Took a trip around Suffolk on Monday,(inspired by this video clip) I visited Lavenham and Kentwell Hall. Drove to Rushford, but could not find the church, I found Rushford Hall but none seemed to know where the church and College were.

Funny thing the past, always with us but never in reach. Closest you get is with film. Since the making of the film I imagine that in these locations many many things have happened, of importance to many people....this film being just one. Well done for this video

Interesting, Just watched this movie on TV, My wife lived in Dairy Farm Rushford, which is just to the right of the entrance to Rushford Rectory/ Church , which is shown at the biggining of this footage.
Dairy Farm burnt down in the 1970s. My wife says there was evidence of a tunnel that went from the Rectory to Diary Farm.
A new build was placed at Dairy Farm, a large yellow building which is totally out of character of the village....

Excellent work! Does anyone know where the coastal scenes were shot i.e. with the fisherman? According to wikipedia, they were filmed at Dunwich, Suffolk, but I believe they were actually shot at Cuckmere Haven, Sussex with the Seven Sisters rocks in the background.

Sadly I have just read of the passing of Hilary Dwyer/Heath due to
Corona virus in March 2020. After seeing this film at the age of 17
when it was released in 1968, her soft beauty and persona became the
benchmark by which I measured all other girls. R.I.P.

    Also...
I think the horse chase was possibly filmed at nr by Knettishall Heath.

Thank you for this, I am fascinated by this movie & it's history. It may be because I live in Bury St Edmunds, or it may be because it is a genuinely horific movie to watch (I mean that in good way).
    Would love a soundtrack & blu-ray release.

Beautiful locations for a classic British horror film, all well worth visiting if you're a lover of beautiful buildings & countryside.I've been to Lavenham & Kentwell Hall, I'd like to go to Orford castle too.Does anyone know whether the film's climactic torture chamber scenes were actually filmed inside the castle?

Love the electrical/phone cable on the house at 2:14

At :24---is that what appears to be an electrical cable running down the left hand side of the door frame, maybe going to a doorbell button?

No, look at 0.27 when it switches to the modern view. It's a stone carving running over the archway and you can just make out the other one on the right hand side of the archway..

Does anyone know anything about the music that plays from the start to :23, and again from 2:45 to 3:12? It has haunted me ever since I first saw this movie back in the early 70's. Does anyone have a link to the song in its entirety?

Please see my video of the Orford Castle dungeon. It does look like the torture chamber, but I'm not certain now.

@Doctorgoatboy Odeon Entertainment are going to be releasing a Blu-ray of Witchfinder General sometime this year, look on Amazon UK for pre-order details.I hope they use the same director's cut print that was used for the MGM region 1 DVD, it's a beauty!

You know it will be nothing like the original.
All modern films now have a "Divesity " target to hit .

I loved the movie apart from Prices American accent and the red paint used as blood.
