I absolutely love my Steam Deck, but he is spot on with pretty much all of the critiques. It is a great device, but definitely first-generation type of device. They will nail the Steam Deck 2 for sure. For $400 it is worth it for sure and there is nothing that can compete with it in the market in the price range and offer performance at that level. Growing pains are absolutely in store , but if you are a PC gamer you know that those pains are love and part of what makes PC gaming so unique.

@@DistinctionDino personally I find it is just as "hard" as a PlayStation, difference is, when the SD glitches on you, you can fix it, PS glitches? You need professional assistance.
Then, as a first-gen device it's got quirks and it feels we're still beta testers. Point is, the Deck not being for "beginners" feels temporary, not a consequence of design

@@venn9501 from the different proton versions with certain games only running with certain versions, to launchers the steam deck can be intimidating for someone who has only ever owned a console and never a pc. Sony players got confused screwing in one screw to install an ssd, on a console you just put in the game and it works. I get what you mean of course as time goes on I think it’ll be way better optimized but I know people who are still intimidated by of pc and as of today I feel like it’s never been easier to game on pc. The steam deck is definitely the step in the right direction because for the most part you can just press the big green button and it works but there are still many issues that can arise and it’s easy for someone like you or me because we have a baseline of knowledge but most people do not like having to troubleshoot and find solutions they just want it to work especially a portable device.

  • @McSquiddington

    Regarding performance issues:
The Deck has configurable options that can help you mitigate its power draw. You can lower its clock speed, adjust its fan curves - virtually anything a serious tinkerer would do to a gaming PC. In my experience with my own Deck, it's worth it to dial down the Performance options in the side menu if you're planning to play on the go, and to pair that with a few ticks down in your games' graphics settings.
The less you put strain on the battery, the less this issue crops up. Considering, I tend to leave tentpole titles for when I'm playing at home and can plug it quickly, and play lighter titles on the go. If I really, seriously want to play Tales of Arise or The Witcher III or Cyberpunk 2077 away from home, I just crank graphics down to the absolute minimum and ramp down the core clock by one tick in the Deck's Performance menu.

Steam deck is the most consumer friendly gaming device.
    deck has:
    -full controller customization for accessibility
    -ifixit partnership for easy repairs
    -steam refund policy
    -steam library sharing
    -steam sales
-cloud saves and online are free
also the battery life take needs to be more detailed.
AAA games can be pushed from 2-4 hours depending on frame rate. 40hz is the sweet spot for performance and battery life.
as for indies, it's perfectly good battery life.

Do you think the average consumer knows what iFixit is, let alone has knowledge to use the tools/guides they provide?
Are there tutorials in the steam deck to learn how to optimize battery life? Would the average consumer even want to use the tutorials?
Don't think of your everyday PC Gamer (which still may not do the above), think of your tablet Minecraft playing cousin. Auntie/Uncle that bought a switch for Mario kart. Younger Roblox-loving sibling.

I agree that some games that are listed as unsupported can work really well, and I think it is fine to try to download and install those if you already have them in your Steam library, but I'm personally little bit wary about buying unsupported games specifically for the Deck because it comes with that risk that they may not work.
For games that I already have I only lose a little bit of time that goes to downloading and installing them but for games that I don't have there is a risk of losing money and not be able to play the game, and I'd rather not refund games without a good reason ("I bought a game that was listed as unsupported for the Deck and it didn't work so can I have my money back, please?").
It's a bit different if there is some proof like forum posts from Deck users telling the game works, or maybe RUclips videos showing how the game runs on the Deck, but it definitely does make me consider more carefully if I want to buy an unsupported title.

I immediately jumped into the terminal (the command line) and typed away. This is easier than my Debian PC. Emulation is amazing. I can get 6 hours of battery life playing the Simpsons hit and run for the original Xbox. Arch Linux emulation is about the same except Burnout 3 has no video, so I'll make a Debian SD card or play it on my Xbox. I had issues compiling Xemu. The packages got corrupt during installation, so everything isn't sunshine and rainbows. The Desktop experience is great once you open steam and look at the controls. I played modded Minecraft and it froze after a couple of hours and the fan was spinning at Max speed, so don't play with 410 mods for a long time. Spot on, great review. That being said, as a 20+ years Linux user I felt home on the steam deck immediately and I love it. I ordered mine at the peak of the crypto madness when a graphics card that would have improved my 6 year old PC would have cost twice as much as the entire Steam Deck. Now the price situation has relaxed a bit, but it's still great value for money, and probably the most versatile PC-like machine you can get. If you can come to terms with certain limitations it's an almost perfect experience. One, as has been said here, is battery life. Better hook it up to a docking station and a decent monitor when you play AAA games, and try to be happy with the abundance of less resource-hungry indie games or emulation when traveling. The freedom to mess around with everything including file system and operating system that Valve gives you comes at a price - it's really easy to mess up the whole system, so be ready to reinstall everything from scratch a couple of times. At least the recovery process is pretty straight forward. Anyone who is familiar enough with PCs to create a USB boot medium should be able to do it.
Besides games you have access to basically any software that runs natively on Linux or Windows SW that can be run using wine. I use my Steam deck to work on my blender (a 3d art SW) projects, do SW development, all the office stuff I used my previous PC for (Email, video conferencing, word processing, scanning, printing, CAD & 3D printing stuff), running virtual machines, videos, music...). As a mobile workstation it sucks, it really cannot replace a laptop with mouse and keyboard, but overall it's a lovely machine and totally worth the money.

The battery is bad I probs had the thing on charge most of the time I played lol but u will get a 1 hour and half average on tripple aaa modern games and 2 and half on normal and indie games 4 hours u can triple that by buying a good powerbang. Also I had the same issue that he had a couple times but its not as big as he says on the video. Mine was fixed after i held reset a couple times. Also this guy only tried one game and then said most of his library was uncompatible, yes even for me I got 400 plus games on my steam library and only 100 was verified but most of the games I downloaded fit between non verified and partial support and all these games run without any tinkering except signing into ur accounts like if ur even an average pc gamer like me then u will get along with this so easy. Half the time I can't even imagine nintendo ever running games as good as this or even having to run these games. Games don't cost 50 pounds either. Can get for like 10 pound on key sites.

Then would still have to research how to get back to GUI and why it got that way in the first place. Nice hear about the real world use though and that sometimes this type of problem could occur. Unix style systems tend to not like a hard shutdown from power loss so maybe it ran out of juice and didn’t have a graceful shutdown script for low battery and corrupted the file system? If that is the case I hope Valve addresses it and will add a low power shutdown script if it doesn’t exist already. Glad you got yours back up and running and enjoyed the video.

If you want to tinker more try this for battery life: set the display to 40fps, set the game's resolution to 540p, then upscale it back to 800p with FSR. That helped me a lot while playing Elden Ring. But like everything steam deck, it depends on the game.

This seems like a honest review 👍🏼 My friend owns one of these and haven't talked to him about it yet. I'm a VR and Switch player. My idea with this was to use it as a PC to VR item and indie item. Put it in a pack with a battery attached to it or set it on the counter and VR. I also love my handheld style of gaming so it flows well for me in that way also. However I have my Switch so I don't think it's ready to take my switch spot light. It's a pretty cool system though. In the future if Nintendo doesn't wake up Steam might over take the handheld industry. Personally Steam and Nintendo need to jump on the VR scene along with the handheld scene.

The Steamdeck is actually a really cool device if you don't mind tinkering getting to know the SteamOS a bit. Other than being able to play your Steam games on mobile, my favorite feature is the Steam desktop page. From here you can install Epic Games, Origin, and other software. They even show up in your library within the Steamdeck! You can also shortcut your streaming services to the desktop. This again comes back to be willing to mess around and learn the SteamOS since since it is Linux based and understanding that not all games are going to be compatible. I've had nothing but a positive experience with my 512GB version and it is an ABSOLUTE UNIT. Yeah the battery life tanks pretty quick but that's a given when you want to play graphic intense games meant for a high end PC. All in all it's a great device for PC enthusiast but is definitely not going to be a preferable pickup for those non-tech savy or unwilling to troubleshoot in linux.

I love my Steam Deck. Getting situated with it was an absolute nightmare. I'm trauma dumping, sorry.
    - I had to re-calibrate my battery, because even though it was fully charged, the battery meter would start to drain and would shut off seconds after I unplugged it, and I had to start it in safe mode and let it run down like five times before it worked.
    - I had to reformat it several times after it black screened.
    - It bodied like multiple expensive huge micro SDs, costing me about the price I paid for the device.
    - I had an internet connection issue that almost made me throw in the towel because there was nothing I could do to put my games on it.
    - And there were several games I decided to mildly tinker with the controls, thinking it would be simple like it was with the PS Vita, and the entire control scheme was thrown all out of whack and there was nothing I could do to fix any of it.
Whether by way of luck, or the numerous updates they've been doling out, I somehow have everything exactly how I like it... and I'm scared as heck to change anything. I definitely don't know what I did to get it working. Was it worth all that? Nope. That was a stupid experience, it was bizarre and frustrating, and not at all what I'd consider a premium product. Don't buy this thing unless you're willing to suffer for your ideal gaming situation.
That said, it can still do everything I need it to. Having a device that can emulate and run a handful of my favorite games that will likely never be ported to Switch - whether because they're obscure or the Switch is just too weak - is what I got it for, and it works. It's my go-to device - I have docks set up around my house that I can slap it in and have it run 4K with no battery or connection worries. If someone in the family wants the tv I'm on, I can yoink it over to another tv. I don't have to hide in my nerd cave to have access to quality PC gaming. I can use a tv, I can use a monitor, I can chill on the couch, I can chill outside on the porch. It's revolutionized my gaming life. No cap.
And the battery life was trash... before I knew a few things. Flip a few switches and I can run emulated games for like ten hours, a hundred down to twenties. The other day I played Dark Souls III on highest settings for at least 5 hours before it blipped at me about the battery needing some juicing. It's literally got a button to maximize each game individually in a drop menu, and it makes a massive difference. Using haptics, full brightness, and the built in speakers really adds up on the battery, and just doing away with those quality sensory features affords a significantly longer session. It's nice to know those things are there if I really just want to scratch my premium gamer itch for a half hour on break at work or something, before I have to divert my attention to business, so I can slap it back on the juicer anyway.
Mastering this thing is pure pain, but it's also all the convenience. It really is versatile. And it transforms into a PC where I can use a browser and manage my files... this thing may be my worst nightmare, but it's also a dream.

I like to tinker around with devices and am looking forward to getting my deck, but I definitely get that's it not work everyone. I keep forgetting that at the end of the day it's still a PC you'll still have PC gaming issues for now, especially Linux stuff with the deck.
Hopefully valve can perfect the software so that it becomes a near console like feature in the future

About the battery problem, I think just stick a small battery bank to the back of the deck and double or triple your play time should be fine.

I am on my second steam deck, the side seam split on my first one. The RMA experience in the UK was relatively smooth. The first 400gb sd card I put in the deck was bricked when I tried to format it also. Aside from those issues I am impressed with it, though I can't play precision shooters on a controller any more, so the types of games I play on it are limited. When it comes to the battery life it could be better but the device would have to be even larger to fit the additional capacity in there. As the SoCs get smaller and more efficient this problem will be easier to solve.

    • @elmhurstenglish5938
      @elmhurstenglish5938 2 года назад

Very true about the larger case to handle the larger battery. As such, if you need more battery capacity, we can just plug that larger piece in externally.

  • @TheKeksadler

Battery life is massively reliant on what game you're playing. For example, I play something like Valheim and I get maybe 2 hours of battery; however, minecraft gives me easily 5 hours without trouble (great for flights). Hopefully, given some devs have started considering the Steam Deck as a PC hardware "standard", Power consumption will be improved in future games.

Good luck going down the nitty gritty PC side of the Steam Deck. Your experience with the heating issue and the battery life is the reason I'm waiting to see what the next version looks like. My MS Surface Pro 3 had thermal issues that were fixed in the Pro 4, luckily I got a free upgrade, if they fix the thermal management issues they seem to have right now this thing could be techie heaven. They're going almost completely opensource with the design so us techie's love it :)

I love mines! Bought the 512GB Model but the Frames do drop here there, the fans are pretty loud, it does get hot, the screen isn’t the brightest, and honestly I could go on and on but it’s an1st generation product so it’s to be expected! I can get about 2 to 3 hours of full gameplay when I’m on the go but I’ll also be looking into building a Gaming Pc as well.

I got my Steam deck back in July and resold it a month later for nearly twice what I paid for it. It's not *bad* but there are a ton of drawbacks.
It is not portable, it's huge. The screen quality is terrible. Steam OS is extremely slow and laggy, reboots take several minutes, switchings between desktop mode is a chore, it can't easily play a ton of your game library if you dare to purchase games somewhere other than Steam (you can get some other stores through tinkering in desktop mode, but not everything is possible), and several with anti cheat software outright cannot be played. Also having a much larger SSD does matter, running games off an SD card is a poor experience, which the 64GB Steam Deck won't have any choice doing. The Aya Neo Air Pro can run anything the SD can, the FPS difference is negligible, and while handheld most people lock their FPS to 30/40 anyway to conserve battery life so it really doesn't matter. The Air is also 50% lighter, which makes a huge difference, just Google Steam Deck carpal tunnel.
I put the profit I made selling it towards the Air Pro with a 2TB SSD.

    • @danieldev514
      @danieldev514 2 года назад +1

Aya Neo Air Pro is more expensive, FPS difference is not negligible, its huge. Games run of the SD card just as well as from the SSD and many people already tested in on YT. Stop spreading bullshit, I know you are trying to justify your purchase because for some reason you can't be happy. Also boasting about scalping does not make you cool, the whole comment is cringe af.

Bro I have had my steam deck for months and its an amazing device compared to the competition like the aya neo, onexplayer, GDP Win 3. I have a 2tb micron 2230 installed along with a 1tb micro sd and I have 200 games installed with still 500gb free. Since getting this device I have really not used my gaming rig. I hope the next version of the steam deck is even better and also makes those other companies I mentioned come out with better devices as well.

I have had the 64GB deck for week now. I am a PC gamer with a switch and some old consoles. The switch exceeds my expectations. I run a 240hz monitor with a 3080. The 30-60 FPS standard has been just fine for me on deck. It doesn't support all of the hundreds or thousands of games I own on steam, but it supports more than enough for me. It helps me clear the back log of Controller style games I just didn't want to play at my desk, it lets me play casual games on my breaks at work, and by and large it's just worked for me. I did order a 512GB 2230 SSD for it for 50 bucks on Ebay as even with a 1TB SD card, the 64GB drive limits updates and shaders for your games. I have considered running windows, at 50 bucks I might pick up another 2230 SSD strictly for windows and see how it runs, I am particularly interested in getting my game pass and epic games running on it. It's not perfect, but it's the probably best Gen1 device I have ever had.

  • @LargeFry1

Yeah I don't understand the reason for this. I feel like most people won't even use it as a portable device outside of the home. As an entry point into PC gaming I don't get it either. For a similar price, a desktop or even laptop can be had with more performance and versatility. Steam deck will have limitations as far as what it can do as a full pc as well.

  • @yaboicezy
    @yaboicezy 2 года назад +2

The best thing about the deck in my opinion is that it will literally handle anything you throw at it with respectable frames, as long as you have the right proton drivers for each title. Remember it’s a pc, you’ll have to deal with pc quirks to get your games to work. People that complain about it haven’t been playing pc games long enough to deal with those issues.
