    I have had mine now for about 2 weeks (as of this post).... and I cannot put it down. I am so amazed by this. Hats off to Valve and AMD for putting together the right balance of processing power, resolution, etc etc to play some of the most demanding desktop games in a handheld form factor. Great video Steve! Loved the shots you used and it's fun hearing your thoughts on the Deck and how much you have been enjoying it! One small thing to note is at 13:59 if a game does state "not supported" that actually does not instantly mean that it will not work on the deck! I have had a few games on my library including Fall guys, Flatout Ultimate Carnage, and Elite Sniper 5 all working on the steam deck with little to no effort! Some will involve installing a free "patch" using the desktop mode to bypass the anti cheat locks and others will actually just involve installing the game, open it, and choose single player mode and it works lol It's super crazy how much you can actually tinker on with the steam deck and the community has been a breath of fresh air seeing all the mods and improvement already being made. it's absolutely amazing!

    Dude. In Doom or Halo (or games like them) Go to: Controller Settings > Edit Layout > Gyro > Gyro Behavior > As Mouse > Settings > Gyro > Gyro Enable Button > Right Stick or Right Pad Touch. With this, when your thumb rests on the stick or pad, rotating the deck in your hands will aim. So you'll have the familiar fast response stick to look around but MUCH more precise aiming on top of that. Tilting the device to aim is incredibly intuitive and has a fast learning curve to reach near-mouse precision, (The caveat is it's not so good if you're in a moving vehicle). You can put it in stick mode too if the game doesn’t support mouse input. I'm kind of obsessed with how well it works, I even dusted off my steam controller for this feature as well. I'll never buy another game pad for steam games without a gyro (PS controllers have it too). Don't overlook this amazing game-changing feature!

    • @zbop220

      Agreed. Lately I've been obsessed with the ability to divide the touch pads into multiple buttons. The customization you can do is truly insane.

  • @ChaozOblivion
    @ChaozOblivion 2 года назад +31

    The steam deck is honestly amazing. Before, being able to play all these games on the go with decent quality was just a dream. I have tried streaming games to my phone via steam link but you have to keep your pc open and there's always that ever so slightly noticeable input lag. The steam deck made that dream a reality. And its super worth it especially for the price. Currently playing God of War on it and its just superb. My only gripe about the SD is the battery life but for what you pay for, I can easily overlook this. You can also carry a power bank around. All in all, I think the SD is probably the best portable handheld gaming that's come out so far.

    I've been opening voice chat through steam friends to play various games like valheim and raft with them. I was surprised by how feature complete this system feels. I'm a linux user and haven't touched windows since 2012 so I can say from experience that the software functionality and support is spectacular. I've managed to get dozens of "unverified" games running, and even third party games like FFXIV with XIVLauncher through lutris (there is even an easy option to add a lutris game to steam). I also grabbed an nreal air from a suggestion by another youtube video, and it adds a good 30-45 minutes of playtime if you can put up with glasses. The audio automatically switches to the glasses speakers which is even more immersive for many games. The steam deck is something I wish existed 10 years ago, but I'm happy to support Valve as long as they keep supporting system development like this.

    Seeing your able to play doom with no noticeable lag is awesome and has convinced me to buy it. I don’t have a steam account, but I’m mainly looking to only emulate games anyway. Recently got a nice dose of nostalgia when my fiancé borrowed her family’s Wii U and games to show me what she used to play. Turned out they had mortal kombat Armageddon for it, which I didn’t even know was on the wii. Terrible controls with the nunchucks so I bought a controller, of course I bought the wrong one (it worked for some games but not the Wii games) but it was only 25$ so no biggie. Turns out, I’m supposed to buy this wired controller that plugs into the nunchuck, only costs 10$ and got here same day from Amazon. Pulled a all nighter playing the story mode and loved every bit of it. Haven’t had that much fun gaming (non multiplayer games) since doom 2016 dropped. Definitely buying this to play the other mk games and whatever game I want, for free too, can’t wait

    I've had my SD since July and it's been pretty dope so far. I'm mostly a console player so being able to grab my SD and play console quality games on the go is unreal to me. I take this thing basically any where I know I'm gonna be waiting around for extended periods of time (play it all the time at work on my breaks), and I've yet to have any issues with the battery that a decent power bank can't solve. My go to games atm are Vampire Survivors (this game is straight up crack lol), The Dead Islands games, Dead Rising, Skater XL, and Grim Dawn. They all play flawlessly for the most part with some tinkering of the settings. I'm also pretty excited to start messing around with some emulators once I get around to it soon, the possibilities for this thing are endless honestly.

I have small hands but that doesn't stop me from enjoying it, it fits perfectly in my hands. The thumbsticks and buttons placement are perfect. Most importantly, the weight distribution of the deck is very even, you won't feel heavier on one hand and lighter on the other hand, so Valve really nailed it on this one. Great video! Make sure to learn about the rule of the Golden 40 as soon as possible, as this will bring your Steam Deck experience to the next level. I noticed that you're using this framerate goal for Hellblade already. I tried to explain this phenomenon with the Golden 40 video on my channel, so feel free to give it a shot - but others did this as well. Also I noticed at 9:55 that you have FSR always enabled in the quick menu - this doesn't do anything until you utilize resolutions lower than 800p.

    Another thing to keep in mind is games starting to adopt upscaling technology like FSR. This is a huge win for portable gaming. The visual impact of upscaling won't be as noticeable on a small screen and the performance boosts are great.

    This really is a nice machine, and makes me feel like I have a Nintendo Switch Pro. I mainly use the Linux side to make modifications to games as I would on PC. Each game has certain ways to make modifications, where I either had to add executables as a non-steam app, or I had to open up Konsole and do Protontricks to open mod patchers. Thankfully there's guides for that kind of stuff. It's a learning experience using this, but I'm glad I have it. Definitely worth the money. Opportunity, position, time, frequency, remiding how to continue the game, waiting for loading…I concluded all these factors to play a console game with an expression "boot cost". Sitting in front of a TV to play PS5 is the behavior of extremely high boot cost for a middle-aged, merried man. But turning on steam deck, wow, it's as easy as drinking ice-cold coke in a work break, relaxing and low cost. That's why I love deck so much.

      I'm always looking for a reason to pick one of these up. It's an amazing piece of tech and it's doing amazing things for Linux. But personally I just got a Retroid Pocket 3 for emulation / game streaming. Because it's small enough that it's actually portable, not just handheld, y-know? I'm sorry, what? Do you even know what you're talking about at 6:21? 🤨Please explain to me where you believe is the ".1" is on this thing. The Steam Deck has only two (2) speakers, thus producing stereo sound. No subwoofer speaker at all, which the "point one" designation means. When you see terms such as "5.1" or "7.1" for speakers, this means there are 6 or 8 speakers, respectively -- one of which is designed for very low frequencies only and is called the subwoofer. Games might have that dedicated sub-channel sound for low frequencies, but this device certainly does not have such a dedicated low frequency speaker to produce the sound waves.

Now that I've seen this video, man its just a landslide decision. Nintendo switch OLED has nothing on this. Nintendo should have released a newer upgraded versio, but still. I've been a PC gamer since I was a kid, always PC over consoles, so you can just imagine how amazed I am with this. people born in the 80s and 90s are so lucky, guys we made it to this point.

    To use my type C wireless headset and to charge at the same time I use a split dongle, works like a charm.
    Also the thing about teraflops, I still wouldn’t compared to a PS4 or Xbox One, because the Steam Deck runs on the Zen2 / RDNA2 architecture, I feel that it is more in line with being a trimmed down Series S targeting 800P with the aid of FSR, since you can run some next generation titles at relatively good performance like Death Loop & Plague’s Tale Requiem, but I suppose that yes in certain games it’s performance can be in PS4 territory
    Edit: My Sony XM4 earbuds worked flawlessly. Perhaps it must be a software issue for AirPods

      Guessing you meant series S? The deck is not even remotely close to the series X. Most games ive seen compared the ps4 looks a bit better than the deck. Still impressive considering its power draw and being handheld.

    I love mine since day one, but it just geht's better and better! I've hardly touched my PS5 ever since! Also on Holiday this thing was awesome, especially with the Deck Dock in the Hotel rooms TV...
