  • It's time to move the Tiny House! The team at FRAMECAD have done an incredible job with steel framing the Tiny House. We have got the tick of approval from the engineer and that means it's time to hit the road and move the house to the build site to begin roofing and cladding.
    Our builder, Alan from Bio Build, has a truck which is perfectly suited to towing the house and expertly navigated the streets to bring the Tiny House safely to it's new home.

    This was 5 years ago? I was more nervous than you and happier when it made to it's destination! With a very deep sigh I smiled. OMG!!!

    Better a year and a half late than never I guess. I don't know how I missed this video. Pretty hair raising I'm sure but accomplished the mission!! ;)) Beautiful framing - wow - now, that's one strong structure!

    You could have driven in front of the truck with an antenna type rod or stick towering on the roof of your car to kinda warn the truck driver if something hits it. That will possibly relieve you of some anxiety while your moving the tiny house.

    If height was that much of a concern, why not just delay attaching the roof panels until you were on site?

    If by a shed roof you mean like Brett Sutherland's home, I still think that a shed design would have been better. The additional room in the loft seems to be well worth taking a little more care in moving your new home. You spend little time moving it but a lot of time living in the house.

    • @livingbig

      Understood. It really often just comes down to personal preference. There are a lot of practical reasons why we went for the gable roof design, and a few really cool features that you will see as the build progresses.

    Really inspirational! I never thought of steel framing until this video, the benefits make me rethink what I would want for my own design. Also, you all have a great interview and presentation style with your videos. I just discovered and subscribed to your channel today, thanks for all the wonderful knowledge and I'm excited to see you on your journey!! Sending you best wishes from MN, USA

    A hip roof may have been a better design than a gable roof as a hip roof is tapered on all 4 faces of the building, allowing trees and power lines to glide up a smooth roof rather than a sharp peak. idk what you mean by shed roof though.

    Really neat you two. I get it now about why you went with the gable, I really love the shed but when I think about home it makes sense. Where you guys anyway up north, welly, south island. It'd be funny if your house was on the Picton Ferry.
    Sorry to be a lazy Maori but which episode showed us the inside of your tiny house. It's been so long I can't recall you had stairs in your design.
    Anyway so excited for you guys, and boy I must say seeing the drive around NZ makes me home sick. I gotta take my sons home to see the beauty first hand versus LOR or Hobbit. Yeah I know pretty lame aye?

    • @livingbig
      @livingbig  9 лет назад

      Hey there! Yup, there are actually a lot of reasons we went for the gable roof design, which will be made more obvious as our build goes on.
      We haven't actually done a video on our stair design yet, but that will be up soon. :)
      We visited the South Island last week (to film a great house truck which you will see shortly) and I kept thinking to myself how the Tiny House would do on the ferry. The South is so beautiful!

      bookmarkthis We will be making that video, but are still waiting on a few items to be finalised. Most of our design elements have been set in place, but there are still a few things that we want to balance first before we reveal the whole design. :)

    Helloooo----this is a voice from the future. Well, the future of 2014. I absolutely love your channel (and your personality). I was just watching your 6/16 update on your build, and you talk about having it on the road. If you were so concerned driving it to the build site, won't you have the same difficulty anytime you have it on the road?

    Hey Bryce. I'm building a housetruck and share your worries about low powerlines, only my truck is just under the legal limit of 4.25. Mines 4.1ish Your's looked about a metre under that? Maybe I'll run some alkathene pipe along the top, but as I drive round in my car I'm always looking at low stuff, and thinking will she or won't she. I guess legally the lines have to be over the legal limit, and some of those freight trucks look pretty tall too and they seem ok. She'll be right. Maybe I'll mount a little camera on the top...

    • @livingbig
      @livingbig  9 лет назад

      Not a bad idea! I think that (as we are looking from the ground up) it looks like it's a lot closer than it actually is, but it wouldn't. I'm going to try and find more more information from land-transport to see if the lines have a minimum legal height and I'll try and find some tips about transporting tall payloads.

    In the previous video, you said you'd talk about how the walls were attached to the trailer in the next video (this one). I watched this video and the previous one twice looking for some discussion on how this is done, and found nothing. This is disappointing. How was this done?

    I’m curious, how long is your trailer?

  • @BobSmith-zj6lk

    Nice build. Any idea of the amount of weight you saved by using metal versus wood for the structure?

    • @livingbig
      @livingbig  9 лет назад

      Our frame is around 550kgs. Steel is around 1/3rd the weight of timber so we saved quite a lot there. In saying that, we have probably gone beyond what's necessary to make sure the frame is bulletproof, so the frame could technically be made even lighter. Currently, we estimate that the house is around 1300 kg's including the weight of the trailer.

      Living Big In A Tiny House what are you estimating your finished dry weight to be? I plan to move my house 2-3 times a year for work, so weight is a big concern of mine.I have my house design, but have spent the past 2 months trying to find someone who will build the frame in steel :( I am in Ohio, USA and would like to find a builder within 500 miles of me , if possible

  • @ameic
    @ameic 9 лет назад +3

    Hi, How much do you expect the house will weigh once complete? I was thinking about starting with a car trailer and doing a wooden frame, any advice would be great!

    • @joshuacornell6667
      @joshuacornell6667 9 лет назад +1

      Go to a home building material center that has both wood lumber and steel framing studs, pick up one of each the same size and length. I bet you the steel stud would weigh less than the wood, there is also more benefit to using steel over wood since wood can rot, catch on fire, and prone to insect damage, yet steel will simply just rust if not properly covered and protected. There will however be a higher cost with steel but this by the fact of it only being prone to rusting if not properly protected outweighs the downsides of using wood. Despite contrary belief, steel if insulated and properly covered will not transfer outside temp into the interior and vice versa.

    • @2awesome292

      Insulated correctly means insulating on the outside of the studs not in between...

    What is with the extra bracing on the bottom of the trailer no one else has that..

    • @livingbig

      Under the trailer we have placed an under-truss, which helps to support the weight of the frame on the outriggers. You can check out our videos on the trailer construction to see this in detail. :)
