This version is extremely Justified if you were to look at the film. Truth be told other than the original silent film, this is the only good Phantom of the Opera film. Well those two and the one with Robert Englund because that was really the first one to ever include the cemetery scene
@@MarvNARK It’s a good Movie but a terrible Phantom Adaptation, as a movie it is very entertaining, I enjoy it a great deal…but as an Adaption of Phantom, I have two major problems with this one…and it has everything to do with Eriks Character. First the acid in the face thing, this movie started that whole stupid trend that really didn’t stop until Webbers Musical, and it just completely changes Eriks character entirely. As a fan of the Original Novel I just can’t with that, as it misses the whole point of Eriks character which makes him so tragic, is the fact that he has NEVER experienced a ‘normal’ life, he has never known love, because he was born disfigured and hated by the world for it. Reducing his deformity down to getting some acid in the face removes all that entirely and makes his tragedy about something he ‘lost’ rather then something he ‘never experienced’ and it just doesn’t hit on the same level. Second Christine and Erik don’t have any relationship in this movie, he doesn’t even teach her in this…that’s a major problem to me because by eliminating the Phantom/Christine relationship you just cut out the heart of the entire story. I mean even if they didn’t want to go the romantic route with the two of them, fine, but for Pete sake let them interact! Let him actually teach her! Give me some basis for Erik to care about her and for Christine to be conflicted by his actions! 🙄 No shade on Claude Rains, he was a great actor and I think he could have pulled off a traditional take on Phantom if they had let him.
I much prefer Lon Chaney's black and white version myself. But there are soooo many versions now. I saw this one years ago... It's a good way to intro phantom.
Well, its just like when you apply for a job position online, and they never email/contact you back, thus leaving you filled up with so much worry and anxiety.

It's looks like me put in my face
It's definitely dangerous
That is an awesome shot of him on the ladder with the light coming through the grate. Cinematography was definitely more of an art back then.
What really annoys me in this version is that they changed The Phantom’s backstory. In the novel, Erick was born deformed not scarred by acid.
And then they keep doing this in other versions like the Hammer Horror and "Phantom of the Paradise".

Why would something annoy you so easily they making movies

An underrated Phantom adaptation in my opinion. Giving Erik an almost Joker-like origin story was an interesting choice.
Reins was the inspiration for Hamil's Joker.
And the acid in his face? I think it almost makes him look like Harvey Dent when he became Two-Face.
I prefer the novel than this adaptation.
@@godzillavkkno. It was The Man Who Laughs
@@willlyon7129that's actually kind of ironic since this and the original silent film are the only good Phantom films
This is Classic! ♡♡
I love The Phantom Of The Opera 1925/1943/1986/2004/2011
One of my favorite Musicals/Movies of all time
Don't forget the 1989 horror version and the 2 part 90s miniseries. Those are great too.
Sure
I love them too
They're really scary

It's still the closest I get to the original novel.
My question is, why is there just a random, unlabeled container full of acid just lying around in an opera house? 😂
This is at a publishing company. The acid was being used for etchings that the publisher and his assistant were working on.
@@crissrudd4554 thank you! I did not know that!
Claude sounds like a whimpering dog after he gets sprayed with the acid.
Just like Winslow Leach from Phantom of the Paradise.
This was the inspiration, and this origin would be used in the 1962 Hammer film as well.
@@agerard6297 yeah but the big twist in the Hammer film is the guys music WAS stolen from him. Here it was a tragic misunderstanding.
Lon Cheney will always be THE Phantom and Mary Philbin will always be Christine for me, but Claude Rains did a great job here!
Perfect film 🎥
Why didn’t Pleyel just tell Claudin that Liszt was playing his concerto, and that they were going to publish it?
He wasn't aware of it. Without email's, texts, or even phones, communication back then was much slower and prone to mistakes.

I think its such a shame more people dont give this movie a chance just because its so different from a conventional phantom adaption
Why didn't she run out and get help while he was strangling him?
She was too scared to move I bet. It only took some bloke splashing the acid on Eric for her to do so
Great classic horror movie Gaston Leroux masterpiece phantom opera
Great Movie, Great ! Acting !
This is only Phantom of the opera worth watching imo
I used to have this on VHS.
You've stolen my music! THIEF!
I'm just wondering, couldn't he have just gone to the other room and asked about his music?
Full Movie?
That's how he got his scar
I love the fact that there is Liszt, but he's a total NPC🗿
First they took away music and then my face! At that moment, Erik died and the Phantom Of The Opera was born.😡
What did she pour on him
Acid
If you're on about the woman in green, she just stood there. One of the men splashed acid on him
