My ally experience: bought it, absolutely loved it and got me heavy into of gaming so I got a ton of games on sale. Windows update broke ally and then had nonstop driver issues so I put it away and got a laptop that runs everything at 1440p 140+fps. Came back to the ally 3 months later and updated it and now it works flawless as a streaming device from the laptop🤦🏼♂️😂 happy with both devices and they compliment each other well but it was definitely a rollercoaster getting here
Nice! I absolutely love my Ally. I may have been one of the luckier ones as I didn't experience many major issues and I had mine since launch. The frequency updates Asus have pushed have certainly improved the experience too. I also have a laptop from Alienware with a 140W 3080 and I find myself gaming on the Ally more since it's easier to fire up from anywhere around the house. Excited to see where things go.
I've been using it since day one and love it. I got the ally as a device to pickup and play games as I don't game as much as I did when younger and tend to play more games with my son who is 6. But since getting it the device has changed my gaming habits. I found myself playing games on it more and more. I then got a dock and found myself playing games in an evening again. I then got a 3080 card for it and wow it's changed my gaming habits again. I now find myself picking up the device to play a game for 30 mins or so and then when I play for a few hours I dock it and play my games on the TV. The only issue I've had is it blue screened once but rebuilt it and it has not done it since. For me it plays all games in handheld mode 30/60fps 720/1080 and 4k 60fps when docked. They main gripe people have is the battery life but I never expected it to last for hours but for what I use my device for the battery life works perfectly. Not had the SD card issue too but I only use it for ROMs all my games are on my 2tb drive I put in it. This device is not for everyone but it's definitely been a great device for me.
Hahaha. PSP on steroids. Man....the PSP was my first console and it was such a cool gadget. Everyone stared at it. Now I have the Ally and it's so awesome to play AAA games so flawlessly. I love the Ally.
Well made and unbiased. I really do notice the improvements with the updates. One main deciding factor for me taking the ally over the steam deck was having a game pass subscription already. The ally was the go to because I could transition my games from the Xbox to ally seamlessly. I’ve been happy with the purchase. Great vid 👍🏼
The Ally is the best tech equipment piece I’ve bought in years! I had a Steam Deck for 1 year then the Ally! And the 12 RDNA3 CUs are doing a great job at 25-30W! Awesome 😎 I’m a UNIX guy and loved the Linux experience on the deck but I admit I came to think Windows is an Advantage for flexibility on the Ally. I can play Fortnite with my son finally, Genshin works if you’re into Gacha (don’t do that) and new AAA games at least “run” not amazing but all the Deck isn’t powerful enough for the Ally gets it done! Plus the VRR screen is awesome too. AMD chill at 50-52fpsis the greatest thing I recommend! Now AFMF can help in some games too. Wish there was a 32GB Ram version. Only complaint. I run with 5-6GB vram which leaves System Memory a little low
Minecraft Bedrock & Java Edition both work absolutely fine on the Deck btw. There’s a Bedrock launcher that gives you the NATIVE Android version (which is Linux too) and Java runs even on a fridge or toaster ! Prism launcher is the way to go there. Both launchers in the discover store easy 1-click installs.
I’ve recently decided to look at buying the ROG Ally as a gaming PC. However, the moment I decided that, I heard about the Ally 2 rumours. And now I don’t know if I should wait to see what upgrades that device will have.
It's not, but that's just my opinion. I have both at the moment due to videos like this that convinced me to get an ally. The battery life is terrible and most games I play play perfectly fine on the SD. But you may differ on your opinion. I'm returning my ally tomorrow since Im still within my return window
I love steam deck oled more. I personally play retro 2d games and emulators more, so steam deck power is enough for me. Also, the bigger oled panel is a game changer for me. When you look at oled panels, it is hard to go back to lcd panels. 😁
Oooh! I’d love to see you do a video on using Bazzite on the ally. It lets you take the Steam OS experience from the deck and get it onto the Ally or other handheld PCs Seems like a good way to solve the windows OS handheld problem on other handhelds
I seen somebody put it on their ROG ally and although it seemed like a smoother interface the battery life really didn't change much and that was the biggest factor for me
I did this and actually had a good amount of issues. VRR wasnt working, I couldn't change wattage, I had ussues with games loading, and also had issues with frame limiters. There were more issues that were less severe, but I ended up reinstalling windows after a day. I also used to have a steam deck and I actually love the OS.
What a load of bollocks ^ I have Bazzite on my Rog ally and VRR works, there's a option in the menus, it works flawlessly for me, even have a disabled CPU boost, I can suspend and install decky plugin with tdp controls, worth it! Been using it for months now! Games work better due to Linux ability for shader cache optimization
@@TJ-cs6vu is there any functionality that has taken a lot of effort to maintain? I’m thinking of buying a handheld and want either Ally+Bazzite or Steam Deck OLED.
@@chrisweeksnz hey Chris, weirdly I'm in the same position as you, I sold my Rog ally anticipation for Rog ally x, I had the steam deck oled, I wont lie. I miss it the most. When I got the Rog ally, it was so powerful, and ran AAA games super well. But windows is just so janky and not console like. I installed bazzite on ROG Ally, before selling. It really felt like a steam deck...but not. I just had the sense that it isn't valve supporting this software, I knew this for sure when things broke - tdp slider, vrr etc and took weeks for them to release a update. Bazzite is amazing but it's deffo not made with love. It's just copying steamos. Now I'm in the predicament to get Rog ally X but put bazzite. That would be insane. Now why I'm most likely going for steam deck OLED. That screen is insane, no matter what, I play many indie titles so even with Rog ally x, that processor eats battery, could do 5w tdp on steam deck but minimum 10-11 w Rog x (+system watts = 15-17). Also I have a gaming pc so could just stream to the steam deck oled. Plus the VRR. Main thing is I don't want to drop 800£ then next year more revisions drop. The deck has of course a bigger battery life by just using it as a non gaming handheld. ( I have the deck, but thinking on going with the ally) coz I need windows..
You could get it since they are cheaper now, the next model Ally X won't change that much, it's just more battery and a bit of extra Ram but will cost $$$$
I think the hardware is indeed solid. Very good. Unfortunately the company ASUS is super sketchy. The worse ethics and customer service I have ever experienced which is such a shame because if it wasn’t for that I would 100% buy more products. Its great. But I forgot how God awful windows is. It's just as well gates has a effective monopoly. I am currently having to re install windows because of bugs. I am going to use this device now for gaming and gaming alone. No more surfing.
The one reason I haven't an Ally or Legion Go is even my 7 year old laptop outperforms them. If I going to play on something I need to have plugged in there is no reason not to game on my laptop.
