Just bought the Ally 2 days before the Ally X announcement but damn, I really love the device. I have a beefy PC rig with i7 and RTX 3070, but the Ally have been replacing it as my go to PC experience. Frankly the Ally X is a much better proposition, the Ally shared RAM is holding it back massively with 4GB default taken for VRAM and leaving the device with effective 12GB of ram. For work, I found this debilitating as I opened a lot of web browser, pdf files, word and excel sheets. I don't care about the battery since I only have 1-2 hours max every day to play and that's before bed time. So yeah, I'm going to buy the Ally X. Thankfully I live in a country where Asus warranty is actually okay, hope Asus America sorted their act together.
Seeing Gamers Nexus' video on the exposure of the Warranty scam process ASUS currently does kind of puts me off from buying the ROG ally, just be aware their RMA process is very manipulative guys
@@charlesli6751tf is this comment? Lol making people aware of a scammy company is playing saint? The RMA problems ASUS is having rn could directly effect any Ally owner. Everyone should be aware
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I agree, Asus has gradually improved the Ally, and with the X incoming, the original with the Z1 Extreme has become really good value. Considering you’ve also been using this as a computer, I can really recommend an XG Mobile dock. The RX6850M version in particular is a great price/performance choice. It essentially becomes a PS5 replacement.
I just finished a 2 and 1/2 hour binge on MWIII. plays flawlessly on my ally. Love it! 120fps smooth, no lag spikes..nothing. just plays. Warzone, sometimes I think it hits a RAM threshold and crashes. But, Im sure if I adjust it, it would stop.
This thing is a beast. I found an extreme model open box for $524. I also picked up a 100w charger and it really makes a difference, especially when playing docked on my 144hz monitor. This is the perfect handheld. My next thing to do is upgrade the storage. Don't think I'll be upgrading. Spending $700-$800 , you might as well put that towards an actual gaming desktop
@daimaru03 I didn't get an SD card, I got an SSD 1tb (they have the 2tb as well) Easy install and no issues 👌 $109 @ best buy on sale. I wasn't gonna take that chance frying a regular SD lol
Love your videos! Do you think getting an external ssd is a big disadvantage as opposed to installing an internal? I dont mind tinkering but idk if im ready to breakdown my machines ( i have the ally & go!)
ALLY & GO LETS GOOOOOOO And I suppose it depends. I will say, taking the 10 minutes to install an SSD was definitely worth it for me. There's lot of videos on how to do it, and it's pretty painless outside of booting up the cloud bios afterward. I've never broken down any handheld like that before and was able to do it fine! One less external accessory is a plus in my book, but an external might not be a negative for you!
Hi everyone, l’m new to this kind of tech and like you I have both an ally & go. I want to upgrade my internal ssd storage on my go but I’ve seen some videos where people clone their hardrive first some don’t. Is there a reason for cloning? Do I have too? Yes I’m new to this stuff to and learning as I go.
just make sure the external SSD isnt trash or cheap. Make sure its USBC and has a high data transfer rate. You can get them in enclosures with actual m.2 ssds in them. get a decent powered dock first.
Great video. On the sleep/resume topic, I've opted to edit the power settings in Windows. Basically Hibernate is the default instead of sleep for my Ally.
@@MeRenegade it does, I currently have a Legion Go now tho, due to the bigger screen and ergonomics, but the Ally is a solid choice because the access to other PC games, the VRR and how well Armory Crate works. Thank you for your amazing reviews on the ASUS ROG Ally, muchísimas gracias! I've got mine recently, well discounted on AMAZON. I'm impressed, how well it performs. Did you know that even the Z1 is capable of doing VR? I connect it with my META Quest 3 and can play even demanding Virtual Reality Games, which require very expensive gaming PCs. Greetings from Vienna, Austria, Europe, saludos, Claudita 😎🎮
i own both. i think if you care about battery life def get the deck. however, if you do play mostly FPS/third person shooter games with anti-cheat like mw3, destiny 2, apex legends, csgo, etc, they will not run natively on the steam deck. i play those games a lot which is also why i got the rog ally. as he stated in the video, the ally has vastly vastly improved since its initial release due to steady updates coming from asus. if you do choose to get the ally, wait for the ally x to be released.
@@DirtbikerG63 no prob. i always tell people first of what the steam deck can't do in that it can't play all games that a full windows portable can. a friend of mines got pissed at me when i told him to get the steam deck. i forgot that he's hardcore in to games like mw3 and apex and when he found out he can't play these two on the deck he got royally pissed at me so i always remember to note that about the deck.

Yeah an awesome device with some caveats. Just be aware of the customer service from ASUS. People are being scammed out of their warranty. You have to spend more money for them to repair your device and a little scratch can void your warranty. I got the z extreme for 3 months now and never used the sd card reader. Only use it for ARPG games and it’s awesome. I also take it to work as a Nurse and use the device going to my patient’s charts sometimes whenever theres no access to the facility’s PC. I had to look it up and I don't know if I'm too happy about it 🤣 But I dig your PFP 👀 I've actually been getting into the Fusion World card game - Lots of fun!

Once a year or two passes, the refurb prices for them are more reasonable but even then considering they’re still 60hz for non pro versions versus pretty much all android phones save for the very low tier ones having 90+ hz makes them look ancient. Unless you’re an iPhone photographer and care way too much about the cameras, they’re terrible value especially given how closed down they are when it comes to tinkering
