I love mine! Basically I got it over the SteamDeck so I could run everything, and the better screen (at the time).
yup, it's really really good now
Nice to see you here Karl. Yeah I recently bought the Ally once it had a price cut on Flipkart, and I gotta say it's amazing.
The deck can run any game in my experience. I almost exclusively used unsupported games that needed tinkering but every game worked so fsr
That’s awesome! The more competition for PC handhelds! The better! We the players are winning at the end, because we have so many varieties to pick from! And it’s only going to get better in the future 🤓
I got the SD OLED and I’m glad Ally is good! I don’t play any AAA games anymore(because nowadays they’re typically trash), so that’s why I picked the SD over the Ally. I hope the Ally keeps getting better after generation to generation like the SD will.
@@averagemobileplayergfs7383 oh yeah it’s absolutely great! I’ve got both as well and tbh? Why didn’t they come up with handheld PCs like these earlier
Found your video with the fractal terra build a few weeks or a month ago, Was looking into handheld consoles now and came across your channel again, top tier quality videos and earned my subscribe
I love the ROG Ally because it enables me to play PC games when I don’t have space or money for an actual PC. I also prefer handheld
I Have a r8 Unit, manufactures 2023-08 and SD card slot has worked great and reliably since day 1
I just wanted to say thanks for the video. im a Mac guy and I just picked up an ally and I was strongly debating on returning it but you bring up some good points as to why its worth owning!
the production quality of your videos is always so nice, kudos! hope you get the subscribers you actually deserve!
the quality of this video on RUclips its absolutely gorgeous even better than bigger media outlets.
How can you upload a video in this perfect quality?
Love the video. I’ve been wanting to pick one up but I’m wondering if I should go with this one or wait for something new to come out this year? What would you recommend?
Quality of your videos are top notch you deserve way more subscribers
A quick tip. You can configure steam to immediately start up when you boot the device up. You can configure Steam to start in Big Picture Mode.
This. I also stopped Armoury Crate from starting at start
I boot my device into Big Box

Great review and nice production quality/editing as well! We ended up picking up one for ~$490 open-box from Best Buy a week ago.
Any issues with the sd reader?
@@Anomalyy666 We're only using the internal SSD right now, but many reviews/posts on Reddit have users saying their card readers are failing so we don't recommend using a SD card.
Couldn't imagine if they released an OLED version, thats why i loved the original PS Vita so much. If they released a OLED version, NVME M.2, a better SD card reader, a bigger battery so you can run more wattage. I'd definitely buy it even for a premium price.
That’s one of the reasons I got the steam deck oled over the rog and I heard the suspend feature doesn’t work half the time
Agreed. It’s so close. Oled, hdr. Bigger battery and personally I’d love to see them take a more mature approach with the design (lose the rgb analog sticks)
It's on discount now. Maybe preparing for OLED Ally or Ally 2?
@@damzelfly The Switch and Deck used an OLED which are already engineered for phones and tablets which have portrait displays. Ally fans would cry if Ally 2 went to OLED without VRR support. I've heard engineering a new OLED is expensive.
@@shazzi1626my suspend works all the time on the rog?
That was fun to watch.
What's in your game library? I'd like to try some of those games out.
Just grabbed one, it’s awesome. I waited a little bit to not be a beta tester and the whole experience is polished.
I’ll keep on using it until Ally 2 is year after its release, meaning all bugs are known and fixed ;P
How is the screen for reading text, would you say it's an issue?
I was going to get a legion go but a Rog Ally z1 extreme is available for £300 less, so my mind is saying more games and accessories with the Rog.
But I keep hearing the screens small and a pain to read, of course online ppl are wimps and they cry the legion go is too heavy but at 7"... They may have a point.
@@bc8359 the screen is good you can set the zoom to 175 in the display settings. I feel like the ally is better because of the vrr. The go has 144hz screen but you will feel stutters or have crazy latency if you use v-sync. I have a powerful desktop and havent game on it in 2 weeks lol the ally is that good.
@@bc8359 you can increase the scale upto 175% but 150% is good enough for reading texts.
@@bc8359 well, that’s a strange scenario (to read text on it), but it’s definitely doable! It’s 1080p, so with some zooming in, or scaling, text is nice.
But, of course, it’s best for gaming, with its multiple color profiles and variable refresh rate.
It's Asus, Ally 2 will have new bugs to be fixed.
Great video. I'm wondering what games you were showing throughout the video. If anyone knows please let me know. Currently looking for something new to play on the handheld and these looked like a great fit
Nice video. Very pro sounding and looking...
But what games are those?! They look dope. 😅
Love my ally it’s insane after a few upgrades and tweaks
have you tried switch emulating?
@@fizzybeard7291oh yesssss its awesome on it Im gonna test princess peach in a min
Not sure if this has already been mentioned: could you include game titles on the screen when you first show gameplay?
Really hope the Ally comes with an OLED version soon this year
Such an amazing video wanted to ask but as an huge pc gamer do you think the ally could run final fantasy XIV when the newest expansion asking because that’s my main game and I want to have something that I can bring on the go but still play that game that I mentioned
2:15 wish it was so fast for me. Do you use fingerprint? I always have to relog in Windows, when I resume from suspend/sleep. I have the login disabled when I turn the Ally on, but still it asks for password or pin when I resume.
Still have my launch day r4 model, zero sd issues but I’ve also heavily modded it for maximum cooling efficiency and I attribute that to saving my reader from the inevitable death lol. I just recently compared the claw to the ally and having both in hand it made me love the ally even more. The ally got most everything right and now the price makes it the clear winner 🏆
I'm on my 3rd ally. Took me fussing to territory geek squad management via emails to get an exchange and an r 8 unit. Never had the sd card issue but its definitely a thing. I rarely go over 18 watts becauase of it tho. Im very happy with this one and use it more everyday. Only fear is it will brick one day and be something out of my control. So i will be keeping my xbox and shield tv (i orginally wanted to sell and have ally replace) but also enjoying my ally. A few yrs from now windows handhelds will be a regular thing with LESS issues
Edit: doesn't excuse SD card reader but external SD card readers via USBC or a dock or external storage for quick swapping on SSD is a thing. Upgrading internal SSD is pretty easy although I myself am not opening my device yet.
Love my Ally with custom 2tb installed 😊
Thinking of doing this to avoid any potential SD card issues. Did you image and reimage the new drive or just clean install
i would love to know the games you played during this video
Great video. Just subscribed!
I still have the on/off sleep issue. You said it’s fixed. Is there a resource I can check out to tweak mine so it will work better?
Great ownership review after all the changes and updates. I will just wait for #2 since I think they'll slap an OLED in there as well as many huge upgrades.
Have the exact same shirt, I've never gotten so many compliments on my life on pics taken while wearing it 😂❤
I'd love to own one of the PC handhelds...like you've said gives flexibility to game on the move rather than be stuck on your desk. It'll be also great as a backup PC too should my main rig get out of commission for period time
I bought a $400 Z1, been loading from the MicroSD, with a usual playtime of 3-6hrs(PD) and MicroSD is still good. Only issue I've had was a Windows Update (OpenGL/Vulkan Compat) which after removing it, the Ally was back to it's expected performance. Coming from a LCD Steam Deck and loving it.
Its battery life seems to be better with the non-extreme processor
I have always custom fan curves, temps on default fan curves are horrendous
nice video. you watch hardware canucks by any chance? I get a lot of their vibes in your videos
i used AMD RIS ,this feature is really good on Ally.even on 720p games looks very sharp like 1080p
What is the indie game where he was shooting other boats ? It look like an arcade style game?
How much are you using the Ally vs the Steam Deck?
On the SD card issue: I have an R9xxx... serial model, and it made my 128GB card unaccesible for a while, like a few weeks later i checked on it with card reader on a another PC and it was working, so I put it back to the Ally it was working, huh. But I don't keep any SDcard in my ally, lest in case it would fry one completely.
Otherwise, pretty please tell me your cyberpunk settings Q_Q
Is this the extreme or normal model?
I've had bad Asus hardware experiences in the past which keeps me from considering this device, but still very excited to see what all of these PC handhelds can do.
i'm thinking of getting one, do you think its worth it to get now or should i wait for a newer model
Just get one now and enjoy it! A newer model is not coming any time soon.
The rog ally 2 with hall joysticks and/or oled screen would be insane
I got the same wallpaper like your desktop :D
Love the content and your Shirt!, I use to work for LucasFilm and Starwars
Great video! So, if you're using the XG Mobile which has the RTX tech in it, does DLSS work well? That way, you're not relying on FSR, right?
Great video. Love my Ally. Name of the game in the beginning?
Looked similar to Midnight Fight Express
Sifu
Do you have to pay for windows on the rog ally?
I preordered mine. Barely used it at all.
I'm debating a Ally or a Deck, which should I get for Steam games? I want to play Kh3 as well and Honkai Star Rail. But heard Deck cant run Honkai or Genshin. Trying to see how good the battery life is though. How loud is the fans when you play on the Ally? I know on the deck the fans can get loud. And can you turn the LED lights off on the analog sticks? Can I play OoT PC Port and Super Mario PC Port on it as well? Thanks. I love the fact the screen has a 1080p display. But the OLED Deck doesn't. What's the difference? I have a bday coming up so cant decide. Sorry. Have you tried playing FFXV on it as well and FF7 Remake?
Yes you can disable the led around the sticks.
The fan unless you're playing in docked mode or 30w is unnoticable.
Andnyeaj you can play your PC games just like on any other Pc.
Every unnoficial port or games also works just like on any other window pc. That's a great game system.
Do Game Pass games work good with this?
Does it still kill sd cards?
What is the name of the game in the begging on the ally
I always check reddit before i buy things.... I checked the ROG ally and it had soooo many issues .... I bought an ayn Odin 2 instead ... Never looked back ... Honestly i do want a x86 device
wrapped my SD card reader in kapton tape and it's been going strong emulating switch games.
That actually sounds super helpful
How does that stop the actual contact points on the sd card from getting burned out? Surely it doesn’t work on that does it?
@@alexythimia23 Kapton tape plus some heat shield tape sounds like a way to keep it cooler. But isn't there a piece of kapton tape on the SD card assembly anyway by default?
what game are you playing top down fighter thing
Can someone tell me what is the name of the game on the beginning of the video
I have an issue its brand new got it yesterday. I put asus rog in sleep mode. And it was unresponsive when i woke it up. And it was just doing the log in. And yh nothing lol. Was stuck there with the loading just doing its animation is normal for the ally
i have r8 enabled custom fan curves NO MICROSD ISSUES. Just use a custom curve. I dont think theres a fixed model.
Heads up, ASUS did officially addressed the issue, in one of the bios updates they updated their thermal guidelines to help with heat dissipations and how the fan curves work out of the box, and the newer models fixed that issue. They released an official statement like 4 or 5 months ago. Also i have an R7 and have no issues as I keep good airflow, I think abunch of these readers were bad due to some people restricting airflow using crap cases, stands etc... Not everyone but maybe like 10 Percent
May I know what that game is in the first screen at 0:14 ?
Is it dust and neon?
I wonder if Asus still update this device after ROG Ally 2
Definitely my Right fan got killed, it started making a lawn mower sound. Sent to Asus RMA India. Hope it makes it back in one piece. Many fan issues are present too in the subreddit
Damn 😂 I heard this thing is susceptible to a lot of hardware issues
I'll wait the Ally 2
What game were you playing in min @05:41? 🥲
midnight fight express
5:40 whats that game???
I'm dying to get one, but since they announced a new device allegedly this year... I think im gonna wait
The device is absolutely brilliant . Who knows if that rumour is true . Worth buying one now .
They haven’t announced anything. If ya broke just say so

Love my ROG Ally so so much. Really wish the SD card slot wasn't an issue. It's the only reason why I use my steam deck more..
Why would u even use sd card slot when u can upgrade ssd to 2tb !
I ended up going with the Legion Go, and it was a great choice for me. I love the bigger screen and it's a tinkerers dream
I got an Ally for the smaller build since I move a lot and I don't want my bad to become a goliath but the Legion looks awesome. How do you like it?
You wasted your money...no v.v.r and the speakers sound like there underwater! The controllers feel soo cheap!! And if you disconnect them a lot, there's wear issues to where they won't work anymore. Too heavy and definitely not portable...not to mention all the bugs! Plus is cost $150 more now..I really hope you needed that bigger screen..lol
@MetalCharlo be happy you went with the ally.. 100% better
@@jaynosowsky9708 it's perfect for me and my needs. Maybe hit the gym if you think a Go is too heavy for you
@@jaynosowsky9708 Wow, that got weirdly hostile! Legion Go has a LOT going for it, but just like the Ally, it has some flaws, you pointed out the speakers. The VRR, who cares, the thing has a 144hz refresh rate, most people can't tell it doesn't have VRR without looking at the specs. We were playing video games just fine without VRR 2 years ago, and everyone praises the Steam Deck OLED which has a 90hz screen with no VRR. As for the ROG Ally, good luck with that SD card. Good thing you can plug in an external drive into that second USB port, oh wait. Did you want to plug in an EGPU, Ally can't use firewire. System getting heavy? Use the kickstand, oh wait, Ally doesn't have one. And as for the controllers, if your Ally gets stick drift because you don't have hall effect, you have to repair/replace the whole system rather than repair/replace the one broken controller.
I love my ally. I just wish they would make a cheaper version of the XG mobile even if there wasn't a gpu in it to have something to work as a doc but when you talk about the Ally I game on it more then my desktop
The game is called midnight fight express on steam
The fact that it regularly goes on sale for around 550 USD is incredible
They definitely need to fix the analog sticks grinding issue, with some sort of replaceable thumb stick mechanism, also sort out the SD card issue for the second generation of this device. I had to replace one of my LED modules and thumb stick because of the grinding issue. I also had to RMA my device which took over a month to get back. Getting past those issues, the device is great. But those are very serious issues and they need to be very serious on the second generation device fixing those issues.
What analog sticks did u get? I have the same problem too and I hate it
What game is that 15 sec into the video
My best PC handheld ever. I liked Ally more than Go, Deck, Neo & Win ❤❤❤
I love this device I haven’t turned my desktop on in 2 weeks lol. I left my ally on the charger and left it powered on lastnight because i fell asleep,my ally was extremely hot and the card reader is still good.
Isn't there any charging protection?
@@cloak55733 i was watching a video and passed out sleep because i just got in from work. When i woke up I realized i left it powered on. I see alot if posts saying the sd card fried from hot temperatures so maybe i got lucky lol
I haven't touched my desktop in almost a year ever since I got an Ally
I had the same problem with the MicroSD card I was mad I wanted to get what I paid for it so what I did was I took it in for RMA they swapped out the motherboard put a new one fix the control chip which maintains the MicroSD card reader and that's it never had a problem ever since now I had my Ally already for 2 months using the micro SD card reader a lot and no problems 👍😎
how’s the download speed to the sd card on steam? mine is very slow… after replacing motherboard
I gave up on sd card and just installed 2tb 2280 drive with 90 degree nvme adapter
@@Ares01008 yea but not acceptable for me
@@light3267 okay so you can take my word for it or not it doesn't matter but for me testing the MicroSD speeds my suggestion is to get SanDisk Extreme Pro that one's a good one and that one's fast when you download things the only things I download on my microSD card because I'm smarter than a lot that they just trying to download AAA games on it which is stupid is emulation games and emulators and music that's all I use that for that's why it's fast downloading for me and the read and write speeds on that specific micro SD card is fast

The Ally looks like the best option rn. I would like some more details on Xbox's handheld plans.
Man I couldn't agree more with you. By far
the only thing i wish this device had was two usb-c connectors. I don't want to use a dock and connecting my screen with one usb-c and not have power to the device is really annoying.
I currently own the Z1 version and am happy with it regardless of the negative reviews from other YTbers which recommend getting the extreme version instead.. It performs very well on the games I've installed on it compared to my old ASUS ROG Gaming Laptop with an Nvidia 960M. I got mine cheap on Best Buy for less than $400. I paired it with a 2 fan external cooling system from ebay, modified it with better fans and keeps my Ally 4 degree cooler on the highest performance settings.
