    I’m 65 and Ben have been bowhunting for a lot of years. Recently have decided to get serious about archery and scanned RUclips for instructional videos. Yours are the best I have found. I have been working on the back tension with a strap release and also changing my aiming to focus on the target not the pin. I have seen some good improvement in a short amount of time. Good coaching and good videos thank you.

    This is excellent. I loved how you broke down the steps in writing. I photographed each page for later reference. I am having trouble pulling through with my trigger release. Every once in a while, I get a shot that goes wild to the left. I’m pretty sure it’s target panic and me trying to command the shot with my finger, instead of pulling.

    Wow! This was exactly what I needed. I’ve typed up your notes and posted one copy on my wall at work so I can look at it all day and visualize the steps, the other is going in my case w/my bow. Been trying to switch from my current “style” of release to shooting with back tension. Great video, great information, so thank you!

    Awesome. Probably the best and most detailed and correct information on this EVER. I've been using a trigger for many years mainly for hunting. I have a new Stan execution 2 coming. Can't wait to try it. It has a new different internal design that supposedly doesn't transfer the load friction/energy? to the trigger via the hook. Love your work.

      @@BowOnlyOutdoors - first time shooting with the new method at our club last night. Score improved from shooting around 260/270 to 286. More importantly my ends improved over the whole shoot and did not steadily decline as per usual as I seemingly don’t get tired shooting like this. Most importantly - shooting felt great and very natural and highly satisfying - and with every shot my confidence grew using the new system. Revelation…. Thanks again mate.

    Hey bud, brand new to archery. Expert with rifles and pistols. I need lots of training and practice with my bow. Thank you for the excellent instruction.
    Quick question: with firearms (iron sights) you must focus on front sight and keep target blurry - but you stated to focus on target rather than sight. Is there more to this? Archery breaks so many firearm marksmanship fundamentals! Lol

    • @BowOnlyOutdoors
      @BowOnlyOutdoors  Год назад +1

      This doesn’t translate over to iron sights on firearms nearly as well, but it does work extremely well when shooting shotguns at arial targets! If using a red dot on a pistol, it works best to focus on the target rather than the dot.

    Just ran across this and would like to say excellent advice. The release adjustment is great advice as i have been struggling with some target panic and punching after 40 years of no problems. Adjusted as you suggested on a B3 hawk and has definitely helped with pull through and shot. Do you have any experience with the new truball extension rt back tension release?
    Thank's!

    • @BowOnlyOutdoors
      @BowOnlyOutdoors  Год назад

      Thank you! The B3 Hawk is an amazing release for the money. I have shot the truball extension r/t a fair amount as a great friend gave one to me to test out. The principle of the release is great, but what I’ve found is that it is much easier to feel the pressure building against your fingers with a handheld release then it is from a strap when adding pressure. I’m sure you could get a better feel for it if you spent a lot of time with it, but it would definitely take some commitment and practice to nail it down, just like any tension activated release. Hope this helps! - Josh

    I noticed you're using the spot Hogg wiseguy in your video to show set screw adjustment but it didn't make your recommendations list. Any reason why?

    • @BowOnlyOutdoors
      @BowOnlyOutdoors  Год назад +1

      The spot Hogg wiseguy is a good release, but you cannot adjust the trigger independent of the travel to be stiffer or have increased tension without adding trigger travel. That is why it did not make my recommended list. You can still use this release to shoot with backtension, it just makes it that much harder to learn and achieve the best results possible.

    I just bought a new wrist strap release and I love it. But the instructions that came with it says not to allow your release to fall after you shoot. Why is that? I notice you allow yours to fall after your shots and my release is very similar to yours. I've seen other ppl shoot and are able to keep it from falling but I can't. Is it wrong to shoot like this?

    • @BowOnlyOutdoors
      @BowOnlyOutdoors  3 года назад +1

      If the release portion falls from your hand after it has been fired, it won’t effect the flight of the arrow. It is not incorrect to let it fall on its own as squeezing it with your hand can add unwanted tension during the aiming and execution portion of the shot.

      Can I use the TRU Ball Beast XT? Is it a good wrist release for back tension?

    • @BowOnlyOutdoors
      @BowOnlyOutdoors  2 года назад

      The releases I recommended are great because the trigger travel adjustment is independent from the trigger weight required to fire. On most releases, when you adjust the weight of the trigger, you are also adjusting the travel. I recommended releases that offer adjustability of both independently. You can still shoot a release that has trigger travel properly, it just takes more discipline and shot control.

  • @Pkurkowski2

    I've seen other videos saying to decrease the preload as much as possible that way its less of the finger doing the release and more of the tension from the D loop pulling open the clasp on the release. Any thoughts on that? I feel like with a hair trigger with a lot of pre load on it i wouild be more likely to still be pulling the trigger.

    • @BowOnlyOutdoors
      @BowOnlyOutdoors  4 года назад

      If the release was set so that you could pull the D-loop through the jaws of the release, you wouldn't be able to get the bow drawn back to full draw (safely anyway) as the draw weight of the bow will be higher then the tension of you pulling against the back wall that would cause the D-loop to slip through the jaws of the release. When you refer to preload, it sounds like you are referring to trigger travel which is the adjustment that could allow for the loop to slip through the jaws if set improperly. When I say preload, I refer to it as the amount of tension I have with my finger on the trigger before I begin my shot process to fire the release.
      A hair trigger would refer to the trigger tension being set very light, not just the trigger travel. A trigger that is set with no movement, but with a high tension to fire is what I am referring to to best make this method work.
      I apologize if this seems unclear. I would happy to try and explain further if needed.
      - Josh

    • @BowOnlyOutdoors

      The screw adjusts both simultaneously. Although the wise guy is a great release, unfortunately you cannot add trigger tension without adding trigger travel to it.

  • @african7498
    @african7498 Год назад

    I dont understand how your finger will fire the bow by pulling back at the wrist and elbow. A trigger release is attached to the wrist which is connected to the elbow. They are constant distances - the more you pull back the more the string will follow the wrist strap to which it is connected? Unless you pull back with the finger as in squeeze the trigger it will never fire? I dont understand this often repeated logic. Struggling with this concept.

    • @BowOnlyOutdoors
      @BowOnlyOutdoors  Год назад

      I totally understand your thought process completely and I’m happy to provide more details to help you understand and I’m sure it will help many others with the same question as well.
      Simply pulling back against the back wall will not build pressure on the trigger, ultimately, not firing the release. What is actually happening is that the bow, bowstring, and wrist strap release is staying in the exact same position, but as you pull, your hand is very slightly pulling through the strap of your wrist strap release.
      Think of it this way, the pulling of the elbow straight back is the method used to gain the most feedback to know that you are firing the release because it is easy to feel it, but the release will not fire without pressure on the trigger. Your conscious thought process is feeling the pressure on your finger build against the trigger as you are building pressure by pulling your elbow straight back. If you simply only squeeze the trigger with your finger, this is totally doable, but it is much harder for the average person to control the movement and get feedback from it, where as building pressure against the trigger by allowing your hand to slowly slide through the strap allows more feedback to tell your brain that the shot is going to fire.
      If you find yourself not building pressure on the trigger as you pull through, loosen your wrist strap one notch, then shorten the release head to get the trigger in the correct position. You should feel the pressure of the wrist strap increase against your hand as you pull through and you should feel the pressure building on the trigger steadily until it fires.
      I hope this helps visualize this concept more in-depth and allows you to take the next steps forward with your shot. All the best!
      - Josh

      No, I don't personally recommend it because the trigger is too light. A lot of people love the wise guy and can shoot it extremely well, but I've found a light trigger can be troublesome down the road as far as trigger and shot anticipation go. • @BowOnlyOutdoors
      @BowOnlyOutdoors  4 года назад +5

      Although some releases do have the name of "back tension", the true name for those style of releases would be resistance or tension, the way in which those releases activate and fire is caused be tension or resistance on the hook which is preset to a certain weight. True back tension (tension in the muscles of the back, primarily upper back) should be used to fire all styles of releases from index finger, thumb button, to resistance, if the cleanest and most accurate shot is wanted. Although somewhat confusing, this video entails the use of proper back tension to fire an index finger release. Hope this helps!
