Thank you. Very well explained. My accuracy substantially increased immediately. Just got a thumb release a couple of days ago to replace my wrist strap trigger. Glad that I made the switch.
I just started using the Stan Onnex Clicker. Everyone finding it hard to pull high poundage and a difficult consistency to your shot with an index trigger, come Spring dump it and get this or some version of a thumb button release. It now allows me to pull 73 lbs with 85% let off because of the leverage position and alignment of your arms. Prior to this I could not pull over 62-65 lbs and bicep tendon soreness. The method you show for the Onnex clicker works very well for me and I have only had this release for a couple of months. It takes discipline to keep your thumb from immediately touching the trigger and I have had inadvertent firing, but working on my thumb to ring finger touching through the release of tension method I began before watching this video greatly reduces any unintentional firing. I confirm your last method it works and greatly increases elbow to grip alignment. I now am using all the right muscles from draw to release and no pain in my shoulder. Everyone should shoot this way for health and accuracy. Btw, I am 54 and feel like I can compound shoot for another several years, when I thought I was starting to have to reduce my poundage and move to crossbow. Go hunting and shoot straight bowhunters!
I've been shooting an idex Release my whole bow shooting life. I've struggled with target panic over the years and now I finally decided to try a thumb button. Your video was very informative and helpful. Thank you.
Awesome! Thank you. I recommend you watch this video as changing releases won’t solve the issue unless you put in the proper practice to do so. ruclips.net/video/F2Gi00hBSNg/видео.htmlsi=tC1prdI4vhroywL0

Great video! I'm thinking of trying out a thumb button (currently shooting a wrist strap) because I was able to pick up one up at a good price. Your video offers a great explanation of how to use these. Thanks for sharing!
Great video !! I have switched from an index to the Stan Onnex click. It does make you slow down and think about your shot process. It has made me way more consistent in my shooting. It takes some time getting used to and is pricey but well worth it.
I use a hybrid method of relaxing my hand and rotational pressure as I pull through the shot with an Onne X clicker. Love shooting this release. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for this great video. Another one infact. I found the second version, expanding the hand to be the best, however, this requires to be able to build pressure/tension with the back muscles as you stretch your hand. I find this very difficult in tournament. I have it working 40% of the time for the time being and wonder whether this could be related to my draw length. By all means, thank you for what you do, This is my only way to learn and I get a lot of inspiration from your videos. I can only thank you so much for bringing all this to me.
Nice video. Iv used a thumb release for 13 years and I simply hit I like a trigger .however it's the point of release that becomes instinctive with practice ,given your bow tune abd sights are true .
Thanks really need methods like this. Looking for a new thumb button and need some practice. Had a few mistakes with my thumb release and lost some expensive arrows. I’m a newbie still learning thanks. 🙏🏽
I have used the build pressure with thumb method for 2 seasons now with the Stan Onnex thumb button. (Non clicker) it has greatly improved my groups after switching from a wrist strap trigger release. Very happy with this method. I have shot a lot of pistol and rifle, and building steady pressure on the trigger makes the most sense to me out of all the methods.
Did not like the thumb method with my Carter wise choice and couldn’t get comfortable with the push pull method. Purchased an Onnex click a couple weeks ago and the thumb method feels really good! Something about having a little bit of travel to let you know you are building pressure followed by the click helps me slow down. Great video!
@@garymatyok I wouldn’t say I have this figured out on where the “perfect” setting is quite yet, but as of my time behind it I prefer more movement to get to the click, with a firm but not heavy tension to get it to fire. Seems to work the best in hunting scenarios for me so far, but I’m sure it’s personal preference more than anything.
@@OnTheMUV-PerformanceAndPurpose pretty natural for me to just have built up tension in my index finger with my thumb placed on the handle of the release. I then transition to the barrel once I’m on target. I don’t find this way comfortable with any other release outside of the UV, but it works well for it so that’s what I prefer on it. Other thumb buttons I have my thumb squeezed towards my pinky away from the thumb barrel when drawing so I don’t have an misfire.
I find sqeezing the trigger while maintaining tension on the backwall works best as it doesnt change your setpoint as if you pulked back with your elbow
I’m still shooting the tension release right now. I’m gonna transition to a thumb release soon, but not really sure what method I will go to. I really like the surprised shot I get from the tension release, and I feel like a lot of people still use the pull thru backtension method for the thumb button as well.
I enjoyed ur video since I’m new to the thumb button release for my bow. Very helpful and I will practice ur suggestions. I will probably stick with the ring finger pressure since I think for me it will be the best. Keep up the informative videos and stay well. Ps. I just recently ordered a Mathew’s Image set at 50 lbs and can’t wait to get it👍
I started with an index and was building the horrible habit of “punching” the trigger. I watched this video and switched to the regular onnex. The second method is what I found to work the best for me. I attempted the first but would end up slightly pulling the string away from my face. This caused an inconsistency and was distracting me from focusing on my target. The second is almost a natural pull away. I adjusted the trigger so that my thumb will just touch my index. Mentally this tells me to relax and pull. I don’t even think about it once the touch. Just focus on my target
First one I ever seen do that relax Style with George Riles that's where I learned it and I do the same thing when it comes to a hinge I kind of just start to relax my finger and boom
I have only used a wrist strap and recently picked up the bad habit of slapping the trigger. I just can’t keep from doing it! I’m seriously considering a thumb button just to start fresh and hope to overcome this

This will depend on a number of factors. I can shoot both interchangeably without issue, but if your wrist strap is long, it’s likely you’ll need to adjust the peep to shoot a handheld.
I really like increasing my back tension as I shoot as the primary way I activate the shot. But... It's easy to move too slowly during the shot. If that happens I switch to increasing pressure on my ring finger. So far it's been an effective one-two punch to get me through some difficult shots.
I shoot the same release it just feels good but I use kinda both methods I tighten my thumb around the barrel and pull and squeeze until it goes off it really helped me overcome target panic
I find that contacting the barrel with my thumb and pulling the same way every time is my biggest challenge because I'm focussed on the pin. I try to break up my sequence into the setting up and aiming part and then move on to part two, the release part. I feel like I have the most anxiety to punch it when the pin settles dead center on the target and barely moves and I have mentality like, I need to get this shot off now! As far as how I activate the release, I try to choke up just a little on the barrel and then just gently pull and it fires. Curious where you set the force on your button. I'm one half turn from the lightest setting.
I have this problem too. I've come a long way by reducing and listening to Joel Turner. He addresses this topic in everything I've seen or heard from him.

If you have a bow shop locally they might have some you could try. Or a fellow archer at the range. I have a Wise Guy and I love it compared to the trigger style release.
Instead of moving my ring finger, I find if I wrap my thumb around the barrel a little more, I can almost literally just think about opening my pointer finger and for some reason that causes my thumb to move enough to fire the release
Another thing that helps with consistency is a small brass kisser button. Not the big ones, just a little one. I notice with your string angle that it wouldn’t work tho since you run your string higher on your face
