Just out of curiosity, your attitude towards China and it's people changed a lot from what you used to have (basically more positive and more optimistic), what's the cause. Did you got offended by the local gov or you got kicked out of China?

@@luezio8914 China's attitude towards foreigners has drastically changed recently and state condoned attacks, doxxing and harassment have led to Chinese 50 cent nationalists attacking my wife and trying to get her fired and arrested (just because she's my wife) attacks against my parents and even random cousins, doxxing my parents, swatting attempts, all sorts of nonsense simply because I have an opinion that doesn't gel with their force fed one. I realized just how sick certain parts of Chinese society are as a result of these relentless attacks and so will now discuss and explain why these happen. I hope to enlighten people through my experiences and help them understand why it is that Modern China is closing up and behaving the way it is.
My Taiwan story (my mother is from Taiwan, so I do speak the language). A few years back, I traveled to Taiwan on my own. I was on my way somewhere and had gotten on the wrong bus. I told the bus driver about it and asked him what alternate route I should take to get to my destination. He told me to sit back and wait a second. While I waited, the driver spoke to another bus driver via his radio intercom thingy, then announced over the loudspeaker "young lad, I'm going to pull over at the next stop. I told the other bus driver (the one driving the bus to your destination) to wait at the next stop for me to catch up to let you transfer to his bus". I was in awe over his actions, and still grateful to this day. He actively went out of his way to ensure I got to where I was heading, and props to the other bus driver for cooperating as well. Taiwan No. 1
It was on March 13th, 2011, I was in Taipei on business and I had to return to Japan as big disaster in Northern Japan on March 11th, 2011. I took a taxi from the hotel to the airport in Taipei 松山空港, the taxi driver asked me if I am Japanese, and I said ,yes, then the taxi driver told me no pay is necessary as Japan is now big disaster. My eyes were a full of tears. I never forget about this tax driver and Taiwan people. Someday, I will reciprocate for Taiwan.
Mickey Takahashi during WW2 many Japanese soldiers were killed in China but the soldiers’ children they left behind were fostered by Chinese parents. Now the once Japanese children loved their China parents different from what you think.
Mickey Takahashi Thanks. You say that now . Taiwan is still weak that you can bully but not China. We welcome you to enjoy what you can in China during your stay. But you have to pay. Japanese can kick the statue of comfort women in Taiwan. But you can’t do that in China. The time is no more WW2. Not even your Abe. However we like Abe more than you.
I helped a Taiwanese family find there way to the train station here in Tokyo a few years back. The father approached me on the street and asked if I could tell them where the station was, I was headed there anyways and told them I would walk them there. We had a nice chat in English as we walked, as we parted I asked where they were from. He smiled and said “from Taiwan, we are not Chinese” I laughed and said I figured as much because of how polite he was.
I would love to go to Tokyo!! Queen, my favorite British rock band, always visited Tokyo, and they learned how to speak Japanese because they loved it so much and they spent so much time there. My dad’s best friend is an engineer originally from Scotland and he was working here in America when he met my dad and then he got transferred to Taiwan. That’s where he met his beautiful, sweet wife.!!❤
Ive been to Taiwan and they are so friendly. An elderly lady in her 80's helped my gf and I take the right train at the right platform. She waited the whole time with us till we took the train safely. I will never forget that moment.
Idk man, it’s a thing we do I guess. I’ve done that many times when foreigners ask for directions. If I’m not in a rush, I’ll probably take the bus or MRT to the station with them. In my opinion I just hate being lost in a completely foreign place, and I don’t want people to feel that way in my country.
I seriously don't understand this. I hear this ALL THE TIME, but I've been in Taiwan for nearly ten years and only see pushy rude people. People getting in front of me, cutting in front of me to get onto the train or elevator, being completely ignored when I try to get someone's attention, being interrupted whenever I speak by the majority of people, particularly older people who believe they are gods over you because they take the "respect your elders" thing to a whole new level and they think they can just do whatever they want... Go buy something. The dickhead behind you will physically press up against you half the time and will push you out of the way the MOMENT he or she thinks you're done (when you're still being handed your change and haven't put anything away yet). Go ask for help. Majority of people pretend they can't understand my Chinese. People closer to me insist that my pronunciation is really clear and accurate... I have no idea if this is true though, because I think due to my face, people just don't bother listening to me. The rest of them just act like I don't exist at all. People tell me I look like a ghost all the time. Good job, you racist fucks. People park their scooters in the center of the sidewalk. People check their phones in the narrowest walkways, and pretend not to notice you when you need to get by them. People DON'T SMILE. People get upset with me when I SMILE. I swear I'm in a different Taiwan than any of you are. I really hate it here. If I didn't have some things tying me here I would have been gone so long ago. Whenever I complain they say "go to China and you'll see how great we are". Oh shut up. It doesn't matter how good or bad China is, when there are problems HERE. I like a lot of the food here. That's about it. The people are uneducated and rude, and the environment sucks. Trash on the ground. Open air sewers. No trees. Crap.
I used to run around with some students from Taiwan on my study abroad in Japan. They didn't actually speak much English, but they had great Japanese ability so it worked out okay. Really friendly people that were just a joy to be around. The thing that's always stuck with me is; when I asked them if they had anything in common with the mainlanders, the first response was peals of laughter, and then "of course not, we're nothing like them!" Stay free Taiwan.
If who you met are student-age Taiwanese, chances are they don’t have enough time to master two foreign languages, so they have to interact with you in Japanese not in English. Taiwanese who study in Japan may not willing to be viewed as Chinese mainlanders, because some Japanese locals say to them “you are just like Chinese” to express their anger when they feel offended by Taiwanese. This makes“you have anything in common with Chinese” sounds like a F-word to Taiwanese, so they denied imminently if you said so.
@@jhleeify1 I'm not dogging their language accomplishments, simply stating how things were. I was actually happier to have the chance to use Japanese anyway, so everything was all good IMO. I had other friends in the states from Taiwan who had good English that I met in Japanese class and once again they were great folks to be around. All of the Taiwanese I knew got along very well with the Japanese students. As did the Korean students for that matter, they were always hanging out with each other in spite of their governments various posturings. That sort of thing gives me hope for the future.
Bagledog5000 As a Taiwanese, I would say 1. The mandatory English education in Taiwan is petty sucks (when I was a kid), so people who are able to communicate in English largely attribute to our foreign cram schools teachers. Those not fluent in English are just normal, except in Taipei people really need to learn English because of peer pressure. 2. Japan, Korea and Taiwan were historically once a single country ruled by Japanese, and still have close tie to each other nowadays. Sometimes we don’t treat each other as polite as we treat other people, pretty similar to the concept that we are not always well-mannered to our (previous) family members. Conflicts and disagreements are sometimes happened, just like any other places in the world.
It's literally Cain and Able thought patterns. Cain (China) sees Able (Taiwan) as a constant painful reminder of what they could be like, but fail to be, which generates murderous levels of resentment and antipathy.
You westerners really should try to stop being narcissist for a minute, almost nobody in China think democracy is any better system. At least now you can stop to think for a while after your Trump-Biden presidential debate kindergarten sh*t show. And by the way, Taiwan is way ahead of you in this election sh*t farce: while Trump and Biden sort to lies and constant interruptions, the Taiwanese have already started to use fists and shoe-fighting in their so-called Congress election decades ago

One thing I think you've missed is that Taiwan is the ultimate refutation of the CPC's assertions that democracy isn't compatible with Chinese culture. It is a modern, prosperous, well-educated and wealthy country. Everything China could have been had Mao not seized power.
@Indian Stars Agreed. Don't forget Singapore, probably the wealthiest country in Asia. You could probably count Malaysia as well, though it seems to be more of a mixed bag.
@Indian Stars Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan used to lead by authotarian government which make economic policy could run pretty well. When, they have been pretty developed, they started to adopt more free and democratic politic which would be the case in China when their civilians become well educated
@Indian Stars managing 1.4 billion people isn't the same as 50 million people....I mean just look at India, they had a bunch of smart people and potential but their economy are still lacking off
@Indian Stars Actually China is very developed. With one of the best infrastructure in the world, a very high PPP, the worlds second largest GDP, the third most powerful military, and one of the most trusted governments, I'd say that it's pretty developed. And Hong Kong is owned by China
As mainland Chinese I used to support Taiwan being part of mainland China but after I've been to Taiwan, I sincerely hope Taiwan remain separate. Taiwan is proof that Chinese people can have democracy and be successful and preserve true Chinese traditional culture. China on the other hand is pretty much kidnapped by communist mafias
Once upon a hot summer at noon in Taiwan, I was asking for direction, the lady said it's too hot to walk for 10 min. She took me there by her motorcycle.
Taiwanese people saw us lost in Taipei. Immediately they asked us if we were lost and offered to show us where to go on a map. Little things like that make me appreciate them much more.
I'm an Asian American and I have been to both China and Taiwan during my heydays as a Field Engineer. I totally agreed, Taiwan people are more, much more polite, and friendlier
It is true for now but the gap will close eventually. Culturally, there are lots of exchanges between the two. Taiwan is exactly that, the true Chinese people. They carried on the values, culture and customs of their people while China destroyed thousands of years of history and brainwashed their people all the while creating more poverty and despair. I travelled in both Taiwan and China and studied in Taiwan, in the 90's. While in China, I never did feel the rich history of this country and culture. Only in Taiwan did I learn and appreciate the customs of the Chinese. If you ever want to truly understand the culture of the Chinese, do yourself a favor and go see Taiwan
I am Chinese and I like my country because it gave me work and gave me a lot of knowledge. I do n’t understand why China is afraid of Taiwan. Taiwan just wants to be emperor. Although Mao Zedong did have a mistake, he did not have him. And how could there be China with the second GDP now? I've traveled quite a bit throughout Asia and Taiwan struck me as the most hospitable and generous place I went to. Annecdotally, I was traveling with my father and brother through the remote mountains and our tire burst, then the spare tire gave out. We had no reception for a phone and were about to walk to the next town (15km away) when I a guy stopped by the road (he didn't speak any english) but made clear he was going to come back and help, he came back with a buddy with a tow truck, towed the car and put us up in his own home and sorted out the tire for us, when we offered to give him some money for the food and lodging he refused. The other thing that struck me was outside Chang Kai Shek's Mausoleam, while it was protected by armed guards at the time and you were expected to bow to his grave, outside the Mausoleam it was surrounded with statues made by artists, some unflattering others abstract but you could really see how different people interpreted his legacy and were allowed to express themsleves. Overall I couldn't recommend Taiwan enough to someone interested in experiencing chinese culture first hand, I really hope it endures and doesn't get attacked like Hong Kong.
Taiwan sounds exactly like Japan. Interestingly, Japan and Taiwan get on very well together, and tourism between the two countries has been strong for many years.
I was transferring planes from Japan to Taiwan years ago, asking for help to find a restroom at Osaka Airport. An airport security guard walk me all the way to the restroom.

Visited Taiwan over thanksgiving with my wife and I LOVED it. It combines the clean, clinical efficiency of Japan with the soul of southeast Asia. Amazing bastion of democracy; glad the elections played out the way they did.
One of my friends, who is from Taiwan, stated that most of the people that moved there during and after the war were lower-to-upper middle class people and there wasn't as many of the "big names" (as he called them) that came over. So, you have a country that is formed mostly of people that were upper-middle class at best, didn't want to be a part of the country that was forming on the mainland, and often were people that didn't want to be "classical" Chinese in a lot of ways. The mentality is a LOT different.
That isn't accurate in the slightest. Look up Waishengren. A lot of the people that left communist China were obviously businessmen and people who had the money to leave. I don't know why your friend told you this.
On holiday in Taiwan I left my prescription Raybans on the Taipei metro which we took for a trip to the zoo. I was so annoyed with myself, it almost ruined the day. Then much later in the day on the way back to the apartment I thought 'what the heck, might as well ask one of the metro help desks'. After a few calls the guy behind the desk said he found them(!) and drew me a map of how to get to the station that was holding them, and sure enough they were there! It was such a relief and testament to the honesty and helpfulness of the people. I will never forget it. Thank you Taiwan! (the sight seeing was great too by the way. I recommend taking a train down the east coast)
No need to take something that doesn’t belong to you, because the person who lost it must be really worried! We do not want to see that happen to anybody. So it is our obligation to return it and hopefully it can be reunited with whoever lost it. That’s the mentality here. Simple and straightforward.
It’s a nice story but I mean... why would someone steal prescription sunglasses? I guess you just got lucky no one else came along with the same prescription
@@FPSIreland2 They might be prescription sunglass, and people is US would snatch it and toss it in the trash when they find out they can't wear it. As you've explained wonderfully, Taiwan is historically influenced by China ethnically and culturally, but the rich and diversified culture of aborigines, new immigrants, foreign workers, and the Japanese colonial era all combine in a liberal society as the true Taiwanese culture that we embrace. That's why younger generations of Taiwan naturally identify ourselves as Taiwanese.

As a kid growing up in S. Korea in the 70's, I always thought China was ROC whereas China was referred to as "Red China (中共)", a different country indeed. But as the world slowly broke away from Taiwan, ROC, Korea became one of the countries that followed the suit. My father used to travel a lot to Taiwan in the 70s and 80s, he never took home any bad memories about the people and the country. Then China opened up. He also traveled quite extensively in China and all the horror stories that he brought as a news were quite startling, sort of like the stories the serpentza talked about. I agree because of the fact that Mao destroyed the tradition of China, the goodness that the Chinese culture inherently had seemed to be preserved well in Taiwan. It is not part of China. Taiwan has its own fully functioning democratic government and military. One thing that's kind of lacking is the diplomatic recognition that it has lost over the years. Taiwan seems to me is a true China in its way it has preserved the traditional culture and education.
Most countries that switched their recognition from the ROC to the PRC still have "unoffical" diplomatic relations with Taiwan. In the US we offcially don't recognize Taiwan but there are in reality extensive contacts between the ROC and the US government. We just have to pretend they don't exist so the PRC doesn't throw a temper tantrum.
I lived in Taiwan for over ten years. My wife is Taiwanese. Most Taiwanese just want China to leave them alone. They want to be recognized as their own country-Taiwan. Many think it is unfortunate that they have to use the official name, the Republic of China, which the nationalists forced in them after ww2.
The mainlanders are in the minority. The majority identify as Taiwanese. As far as the name “Republic of China” this is because Chiang Kai-Shek was stubborn. When the UN finally decided to give the China seat to the PRC, he was given an option for Taiwan to stay in the UN under a different name. He could have chosen Taiwan but he refused. He insisted that he was the legitimate ruler of all China and would not accept a seat in the UN under any other name.
It's because Taiwan is the world's best kept secret, even right now they're the most successful country in containing corona, because they're also one of the most independent and listen to their own gut before all, my last video was coincidentally also about why Taiwan was so successful as a nation, and these last couple months really shows!!
From an article that I read, Taiwan's success in containing the coronavirus is in part due to the fact that since they are excluded from the WHO, therefore they are forced to make their own decisions and preparations in case of a potential disease outbreak. They do have their own stockpiles of supplies and emergency plans in order to stop a disease such as COVID 19 and get the information public as quickly as possible. Before the WHO even declared a pandemic, Taiwan was already busy taking action, closing down schools and enforcing other public sanitation measures. While countries such as the USA, Italy, and Spain are faced with a disastrous situation, and the mainland has managed to almost nearly get the local situation under control, the people of Taiwan are already back to a semi-normal life, with local statistics showing the lowest infection and death rates from COVID 19 in east Asia, all because the government knows they're pretty much on their own in a situation like this and they have no margin for error if they want to keep their population safe.
@@kevinsjournal Its also because of the SARs outbreak Taiwan was one of the nations devastated by it at the time and so Taiwan didn't want to repeat that.
Taiwan’s society is an amazing blend of diversified cultures and ethnic groups: Up to 16 indigenous peoples; Chinese culture (the only country using traditional Chinese characters); Japanese culture and heritage; new immigrants from Southeast Asia; and westerns values: democracy, of course, with even same-sex marriage legalized in 2019
@Central Intelligence Agency Well... It naturally happens, but Taiwan is actively protecting (traditional)Chinese culture, as well as Pluralism. Fascinating, I know.
They could actually if they go up to UK and for their rights to be returned to Republic of China Taiwan instead. Hong Kong was actually taken during the Han dynasty. According to history... after the Han dynasty, the Republic of China is the next China not the People's Republic of China. However, reality Republic of China is not even the successor of the Han because they over threw the Han. Don't even talk about the People's Republic of China that wasn't even born yet until 1949. However, during the return of Hong Kong, the People's Republic of China ran to UK thick face claiming that they are the official China and China should be returned to them and stupid UK really did. Actually they should let the Hong Kong vote to be returned to People's Republic of China or the Republic of China or to be on their own until there is a real only China. So Hong Kong should go sue UK for a stupid mistake that they should be responsible for.
The description of how helpful Taiwanese people are really speaks to me. I had a job teaching English in Taiwan for a while, and had many experiences of people going out of their way to help me, just because I looked like I needed it. My first time using the trains there, I was feeling lost and confused, but a girl walked up, spoke English, and helped get me to the right platform. Another time, my scooter broke down on the side of the road, and a man who didn't speak English stopped, checked it out, and helped me get to the next town. @AlexNOSAM Actually you are right, these two are different but apply to the same thing, which is China wants to take back what was stolen by no matter Japanese or any other party. The reason for the current special circumstance of Taiwan is because of the Chinese civil war, by definition, it has never been a foreign affair, that is the reason you have MAC to deal with the mainland, not the ministry of foreign affairs. But I still believe things will change from the young generation in PRC since we receive more education than our parents and grandparents. There'll be one day we will surpass Taiwan in every aspect and it is just matter of time. Let's see.
@@zeyufeng4412 Well, i can only wish u can change something to the right way before CCP silence u. If u can't even allowed to speak a different opinion, how could u change ppl to be more civilized? If u can't deal with the "CCP is always right" issue, how could u make ppl think independently? You won't change anything if ppl never and won't admit it's wrong. All u can get would be lots of unreasonable excuses and reject to change.
@@risa520 Sorry, me and most of ppl around me do know the fact that CCP is not always right. I never stand with this Party. Here I only want to illustrate my point of view upon civilization instead of politics. I don't wanna argue more about the politics and democracy. I think we can think independtly and critically. The dictorship of CCP is of course not right but I never thought the western democracy is perfect. To be honest I'm satisfied with what CCP have achieved in last 30 years and it makes me feel pround to be a Chinese.
For thousands years, Chinese history only has dictators and slaves, people were brain washed, their stomachs and pockets are controlled by rulers, now CCP. They don’t believe human right and freedom are possible, they don’t care as long as fed well. To educate this huge population while their stomachs are controlled by CCP is almost impossible. Taiwan started COVID-19 prevention measures AS EARLY AS the evening of DECEMBER 31 last year by screening passengers from Wuhan, and sent an inquiry email to the WHO, which did not care. (Otherwise the rest of the world could be saved to some extent.) What was the Chinese Communist Party doing then? Silencing doctors, without even screening and protecting its Chinese citizens.

I had the same experience in Taiwan in 2018, I needed to go to a hospital so I asked the owner of a cafe where is the nearest hospital, and without a blink he asked to follow him, got out of his cafe did not even bothered to close shop, walked about 2 blocks and pointed me to a hospital; I was blown away. This is only one of the instances where I figured the differences between Taiwan and China. From that visit my outlook of Taiwan changed 360 degrees. Love Taiwan and planning to go back soon.

Taiwan needs to form a mutual defense pact with the other Asian democracies such as Japan, South Korea and Australia. SEATO used to be such an organization
bademoxy yes but SEATO was created in the 50’s with The United States, the UK and France being the dominant players. Agreed that a modern SEATO needs to be created that’s includes the countries you mentioned with the addition of Vietnam and India.
alek incorrect. SEATO was created by the western powers in 1954, it is also known as the Manila Pact. At that time Britain and France still had considerable holdings in Southeast Asia which is why they were key players. The organization was not as well organized as NATO and ultimately failed. However, now is the time to reorganize it. The CCP is a red menace and must be stopped or contained.
historically, the Emperor and the Officials of the Kingdon looked down on the people of Formosa/Taiwan, comparing them to "mud". Today Taiwan is a powerful country and has a formidable defense force, and it will be near impossible to invade that island as Taiwan has many friendly countries that will come to help it if China tries to invade it.

Taiwan is a beautiful country with awesome people..... only thing I don't agree is with "good English in the service industry". That's mostly true for Taipei but as soon as you get to Taichung or let alone Kaohsiung no way 😅
I can definitely vouch for the friendliness/politeness of Taiwanese people. I was there in April of 2019 on a two-week trip. During my travels I missed League of Legends so I went to an amazing internet cafe in Taipei (Lee Hwa Hang). In there I sat next to 2 Taiwanese males and asked them if they wanted to play LoL with me. They agreed. We went on to play 4 very enjoyable games together, and when it got late and they had to go, they agreed to pay for my tab and invited me out to dinner with them and one of them's girlfriend. I got in the car with them and we went to a local all-you-can-eat hotpot buffet restaurant. There wasn't a single foreigner in there, since you needed to read a sign in Chinese and ride an elevator to get there. They offered to pay for my part of the meal as well, but I declined since it was apparent that this was an expensive establishment. One of them spoke very good English and the other one did not. They were both soldiers. To this day I have them both as friends on Instagram. I had many experieces with the friendliness of Taiwanese folk, but this one stands out the most.

I have been in Taiwan earlier this year and finishing a travel vlog playlist about it. It was one of my best trips and memories that I will keep for a lifetime!
Because Taiwan is basically a better China. It’s more successful on almost every metric; it’s cleaner, it’s actually a free democracy, better healthcare, better standard of living, people are happier and friendlier, no censorship or banned websites, and Taiwan still values traditional Chinese culture. The only thing China beats Taiwan at is military and population. Taiwan is basically a parallel version of how China could’ve developed in the modern era, a parallel that’s better, and China doesn’t like that.

Thanks for the video. "Mainland China" is a bothersome term. Taiwan is not China, neither should be Hong Kong, Nepal, Tibet and other countries that "Mainland China" took by force. CCP needs to be shunned by all countries of the world . . . .
I always thought it was about saving face for the nation of China. Recognizing Taiwan as a separate political entity means back-pedaling and making it look like their leaders in the past were wrong when they said Taiwan is a part of China and its rightful government is the government of mainland China. It might also be construed as weakness. It could be seen to imply that they are relinquishing their claim on Taiwan as a result of pressure from the rest of the world or as a result of an inability to conquer Taiwan with military force. I think the Chinese government and military realize that conquering Taiwan - while possible - is more costly than it's worth. But they continue to posture about it in order to save face. And I also agree that Taiwan's success is a bit of an embarrassment for mainland China.
In Japan. Whenever I have a Taiwanese student who is fairly fluent in English and seemingly very open-minded, I quickly mention to them that I am sorry that Taiwan is not its own country... And then I get a very surprised look and a very heart-warming "Thank you!" from them.

As a Taiwanese, I would say

@@zanir2387 Tsai Ing-Wen, again
One of my friends, who is from Taiwan, stated that most of the people that moved there during and after the war were lower-to-upper middle class people and there wasn't as many of the "big names" (as he called them) that came over. So, you have a country that is formed mostly of people that were upper-middle class at best, didn't want to be a part of the country that was forming on the mainland, and often were people that didn't want to be "classical" Chinese in a lot of ways. The mentality is a LOT different.
Given anyone educated was jumped on their stomach untill their intestines would go out, by Mao's youth militias, that is not surprising at all.
That isn't accurate in the slightest. Look up Waishengren. A lot of the people that left communist China were obviously businessmen and people who had the money to leave. I don't know why your friend told you this.
After listening to you, I would visit Taiwan. When I saw the WHO spokesperson treat them so badly, I was angry.
I love Taiwanese people, more polite than even Singaporeans in a genuine humanistic sense and Singaporeans are quite amicable generally.

Like cmon, it’s 2022, why are countries still trying to take over others like it’s the colonial ages…

The Chinese commies are the definition of sore winners. They should just take the win and leave Taiwan alone.
@@geronimowindow Yep exactly all this, check out one of my last videos I made about Taiwan, it pretty much agrees and talks about the same idea! :)

Hong Kong should become the second Taiwan instead
PrivateEyeYiYi Sadly taiwan government refuse to accept those refugees from Hong Kong

Taiwan started COVID-19 prevention measures AS EARLY AS the evening of DECEMBER 31 last year by screening passengers from Wuhan, and sent an inquiry email to the WHO, which did not care. (Otherwise the rest of the world could be saved to some extent.)
What was the Chinese Communist Party doing then? Silencing doctors, without even screening and protecting its Chinese citizens.

Joseph Corradino your talking about NATO
alek incorrect.

I 100% agree.
Thankyou for sharing this with us. I will definately visit Taiwan sometime. :)

I won't deny that nowaday, China as taken back it's huge technological disadvantage, but during the Great Leap Forward, a lot of it's old culture (monuments, art, etc) was destroyed, while Taiwan was able to keep it.
Also, Taiwan has better strict discipline. Shows that dictatorship doesn’t teach discipline.
The wealth gap in Taiwan is actually one of the smallest in the world. With great social welfare, it makes Taiwan an extremely safe country.

Taiwan saved chinese culture!!
In Japan. Whenever I have a Taiwanese student who is fairly fluent in English and seemingly very open-minded, I quickly mention to them that I am sorry that Taiwan is not its own country... And then I get a very surprised look and a very heart-warming "Thank you!" from them.

Taiwan IS its own country! No wonder you get surprised looks. As they thank you they are probably thinking 'what a clueless fellow'.
Whoa that’s incredulously rude and ignorant! Taiwan IS its own free democratic country. You need to go find that person and apologize immediately.
@Yousha Zaidi -- Taiwan is a country, whether other countries, for political reasons, recognize it or not. Red China can go bleep itself; the rest of the world should not be kowtowing to those tyrannical mass murderers.
China is probably bribing people on RUclips and Facebook right now to go on and comment 'Taiwan is not a country"
