I had the greatest fortune to be a Professor at USMA for over 10 years. I would have stayed longer but my wife hated the snow and we had 3 rough winters in a row. We sponsored 20 cadets each year and I think most of them are still on my wife's Facebook page with some staying in the US Army and many going on to great civilian careers. One of my first sponsor cadets got into Yale Medical School on early admission and left after one year to pursue undergraduate school followed by Medical School. Once she graduated, she went right back into the US Army and is a pediatrician on active duty today. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for this retired US Army officer and I still miss it today after being gone from there for over 15 years. Wow, time flies.
And some didn't survive 💔 My uncle Major K. A. Bauer '36, Army Philippine Scouts. Survived Bataan Death March, prisoner in hold of Jap Hell Ship Oryoku Maru, killed Subic Bay 12-15-44. His family never forgets, everyday. Look for his name in Cullum Hall, Pacific Theater. 💔🇺🇲 God bless.

@@jimwolfe4286 no sir. i am an ex-cadet and do not deserve the honor of being among the Association of Graduates. however, I did become a regular army officer by another route and served for just over 10 years on active duty before joining the reserves and ended my military career in the army national guard. wisdom, hindsight, and knowledge would have better prepared me for my dis-honor but as it is or as it happened i was compelled to resign from the Corps of Cadets. maybe in another Life I would get the opportunity but only God may grant such a chance.

There was a large wooden display board at the entrance to Thayer Hall, the main classroom building. It contained the names and cadet companies of the graduates killed in Vietnam. Each name on a shiny brass plaque about 5 by 7 inches in size. There was probably room for 100 names. About 20% of the board was filled. By the time I graduated the first wooden board was completely filled with names. A second board was about 2/3 filled. It was a constant reminder of the true purpose of West Point. The more our fellow college students protested the war, the more determined we were to do our duty.

American involvement dates back to 1942 with roosevelt, then truman in 1945, eisenhower beginning in 1953, kennedy in 1961, then johnson, followed by nixon in 1969 and ultimately ford who witnessed the end in 1975. SEVEN administrations hold some measure of RESPONSIBILITY but johnson more than the others holds a greater RESPONSIBILITY for the escalation and the MINDLESSNESS of which the war was conducted. the class of ;66 had it the worse; the book the long grey line is about them..I belive 7% of the class was killed in action in Vietnam
