  • A dramatization based on the true story of one of the first black cadets at West Point and the racial prejudice he encounters at the U.S. Military Academy. Johnson Whittaker is court-martialed in 1880 and expelled from West Point for allegedly staging his own assault and mutilating himself in order to avoid taking an exam. The film is anchored on the clash between a Harvard-educated black law professor (Jackson) and his co-defense, a racist white attorney (Waterston) more interested in upholding the honor of West Point than in seeing that justice is done.
With a great cast: Samuel L. Jackson, Sam Waterston, Mason Adams, Eddie Bracken, Al Freeman, Jr., John Glover and introducing Seth Gilliam as Johnson Whittaker. Originally released on Showtime on February 27, 1994.

I am the Great Great Grandson of Johnson Whittaker. My family and I received a posthumous comission in July 1995 at the White House where he was solidified the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army.

    Great movie !
We had à similar injustice here, in France, namely "Dreyfus Affair", with a Jewish officer.
It also reminds me of the first women studying medicine or engineering and what they endured, how they were bullied and mocked.

Strange that no mention was made of Henry Flipper, The First Black cadet to graduate from West Point.

Later after graduation he too was pushed out via a bogus court martial.

Henry O. Flipper graduated in 1877. I guess it was too soon for another black American to join him.

As a people we Americans sure do have a very checkered history. Land of the Free home of the brave has always been a selective condition.
