  • I paid $20 for this; please watch it. Yes, I know it's not a documentary, just putting it in the title so that it doesn't get copyrighted. I also spent an embarrassingly long time trying to remember how to use photoshop so I can make the thumbnail

In high school trig my teacher was a Ret. Colonel West Point. His lectures were organized and precise and he welcomed questions. On exams, even if you missed a problem, he would give you credit, as he put it, if you demostrated him you knew how to the exercise.

I remember watching this movie on TV when I was in the 8th grade. A first class cadet from the USMA came out to my school in his uniform about a month later and gave a presentation which struck my interest even more in the armed forces. I attempted, but never got a nomination into any of the service academies, but I did manage to serve through 3 enlistments honorably in the USMC. I credit this film as well as may others giving me the inspiration to join.

My father graduated from West Point in 1950. He served as a Tactical Officer at the academy from 1958 thru 1962. To this day (2023) I remember my 4 years living there. This movie brought back pleasant memories of my childhood. I remember roaming around the academy attending numerous athletic events, watching parades, locating the great chain that was once across the Hudson. I remember camping overnight at Fort Putnam that is the fort that Benedict Arnold tried to surrender to the British. After graduation the seniors would throw their old cadet uniforms out of their windows. The children would collect them and wear them until their parents got tired of them and through them out.

I was in the 2nd battalion of the 505th infantry of the 82nd airborne division in 1976. We supported the first class of female cadets that summer at Camp Butner. My platoon, 2nd platoon of Charlie company provided rifle qualification and supported other ranges that summer. It was a great assignment and now , looking back, a historical one as well.

Reminds me of the UCMJ brief for officers. It was a week long and about halfway through the subject of administrative separation came up. How you can administratively separate a person from the military with the stroke of a pen. One way is if the person fails two consecutive PRT’s. It was brought up that women didn’t have to do as many sit-ups, push-ups, etc as men have to do. I commented that women are finally getting equal pay for unequal work.
