Created in the immediate post-WWII period, this gorgeous color film shows the activities of U.S. Navy cadets at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Some of the interesting segments in the film include an overview of the curriculum circa 1948, football games and sporting events, and a class visit with the fleet including the aircraft carrier USS Randolph.
The United States Naval Academy (also known as USNA, Annapolis, or Navy) is a four-year coeducational federal service academy located in Annapolis, Maryland, United States. Established in 1845 under Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, it is the second-oldest of the United States' five service academies, and educates officers for commissioning primarily into the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps. The 338-acre (137 ha) campus is located on the former grounds of Fort Severn at the confluence of the Severn River and Chesapeake Bay in Anne Arundel County, 33 miles (53 km) east of Washington, D.C. and 26 miles (42 km) southeast of Baltimore. The entire campus is a National Historic Landmark and home to many historic sites, buildings, and monuments. It replaced Philadelphia Naval Asylum, in Philadelphia, that served as the first United States Naval Academy from 1834 to 1845 when the Naval Academy formed in Annapolis.
Candidates for admission generally must both apply directly to the academy and receive a nomination, usually from a Member of Congress. Students are officers-in-training and are referred to as midshipmen. Tuition for midshipmen is fully funded by the Navy in exchange for an active duty service obligation upon graduation. Approximately 1,300 "plebes" (an abbreviation of the Ancient Roman word plebeian) enter the Academy each summer for the rigorous Plebe Summer, but only about 1,000 Midshipmen graduate. Graduates are usually commissioned as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps, but a small number can also be commissioned as officers in other US services, and the services of allied nations. The United States Naval Academy has some of the highest paid graduates in the country according to starting salary. The academic program grants a bachelor of science degree with a curriculum that grades midshipmen's performance upon a broad academic program, military leadership performance, and mandatory participation in competitive athletics. Midshipmen are required to adhere to the academy's Honor Concept.

Thanks for posting this. It shows how the academy would have looked when my father and uncle were roommates there as members of the Class of 1940

They would have been involved in lots of action, and probably promoted quickly if they survived.

Thanks. My uncle Donald Larson was class of 1945. They had to do everything in three years instead of four because of the need for officers in WWII. This video makes it look easy. He said it was the hardest thing he had ever done. And he was no slouch.

My dad was also Class of '45 and graduated early in '44...Capt. Vernon F Anderson. I had the fortune of him settling there in Annapolis on his last transfer and my first job was giving walking tour that included the entire Academy. I liked also showing the Trident Lightt. , donated by their class.

When I graduated in 1976, I was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. We wore Dress Whites on graduation day. I wore them on special days as I served in the Marine Corps. Good looking uniform.

Oh, if only...if only... if only women (of every skin tone) were given the chance! If only... if only... If only we could go back and 'cancel' what was, heh? Well, we can't and, "if only..." gets us nowhere; the past is history. We can't and shouldn't do anything else except learn from it, and value any positive changes made since then. It doesn't detract from having an appreciation of the youngsters in this film. As someone else commented, "these guys are a cut above."
