This is an Irish programme, and I'm an Irish man. Ireland isn't a Catholic country anymore. Probably some people still believe, but it's dwindled massively. Well having been in the audience, I can tell you that the people that they pick out to ask questions were invited specifically for the topic. It's not like they simply have people putting their hands up and they pick people from the general audience.

Stephen Hawking gives the best answer of what was before the Big Bang. The Big Bang created spacetime and matter. So if time started at the Big Bang there was no "before" the Big Bang. In this model there is no need for a creator.
There are several plausible hypothesis' and but we shouldn't be appealing to authority. Either way the god of the gaps can be dismissed without providing any substitute for it.
Actually before the big bang[rapid expansion] there was singularity in the penultimate stage, before that there was the appearance of the singularity and before that was before the singularity appeared. Maybe the history of time is'nt as brief as Mr Hawking believes.

I was catholic for 35 years. I passed through tough position and light ones as to think that some day science and religion could met each other and that god is expressed in a consensus of all religions, but i studied history of religion, christian mythology, quantum chemistry at Master Degree and molecular biology, I realized that god is a human creation. I have my excuses to be religious for so long time, but I am ashamed to think that I was.

Religion is not giving answers to any questions, it forbids asking them.
A related question is why isn't consciousness dark, which is one that philosophers debate. We presume that clockwork toys and simple electrical robots do not have experience, qualia, this visual field, elipse of light. We assume that they just react to simuli. They are zombies. And there is no reason why we shouldn't be dark (consciousness-less) either assuming that we are machines.
To understand the absurdity of a totally unfounded belief and then one day decide to follow that absurd, unfounded belief has got to be the stupidest thing one can do.
When Dawkins makes the important point about a conscious intelligence requiring a gigantic amount of explanation, the interviewer just ignores it and moves the discussion on.
