Militant atheism | Richard Dawkins

- www.ted.com Biologist Richard Dawkins launches into a full-on appeal for atheists to make public their beliefs and to aggressively fight the incursion of religion into politics and education. Dawkins' scornful tone drew strongly mixed reactions from the audience; some stood and applauded his courage. Others wondered whether his strident approach could do more harm than good. Dawkins went on to publish The God Delusion and become perhaps the world's best-known atheist.

Back when TED hosted all sorts of discussions instead of non controversial ones
Good ol' days. Today it's all so tame.
It literally banned all the ones dealing with religion, whether opposed or for lol
"For his invisible qualities are clearly seen from the world's creation onward, because they are perceived by the things made, even his eternal power and Godship, so that they are inexcusable." Ro 1:20
"those who exchange the truth of God for the lie and venerated and rendered sacred service to the creation rather than the One who created" Ro 1:25
Is he judging correctly if he judges all religions as a danger to human society and God as non existent?
"Open your mouth, judge righteously and plead the cause of the afflicted one and the poor one." Pr 31:9
While it is noble to speak up for those who have been or could be afflicted or impoverished by religion is it righteous to prejudge all religions as the same. That is prejudice. That is like judging that all races are or everyone of a certain race is the same. It is like saying all countries are or everyone of a country is the same and condemning them for it. Should he not make such negative assessments on a denomination basis? Putting them all in one basket approach is unjust!
@@bjm6275 It is pretty obvious he is talking about all religious which have influence enough to affect society. Anything else small enough which doesn't come under all, but certainly does not have any influence either.
With how common religions like Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, ect. Leave a lot to be desired compared to modern standards of morality. People tend to ignore all the flaws and keep believing and twisting it to their liking which leads to a lot of problems.
“As has been said before, we are all atheist about most of the gods humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further”, One of the best lines this speech!
@Torvic it's not a lie. He believes in one less god than you do. It's an irrefutable truth.
@Torvic have you listened to yourself?
@Torvic it might be dull and tiresome to you but that doesn't make what he said any less true.
@Torvic and the reason you cannot begin to give a lengthy and reasoned exposition is because you literally cannot. You have no valid point to criticise him on.
Hardly, his groups' main objective is the destruction of Christianity, Antichristers are not concerned about undermining anything else.
Atheism feels like something that would be controversial in the 1600s

@@khedarenperumal8906 Here's a rather shocking thing that I've read somewhere. In ancient Greece, the secret mathematical society had a member slain for divulging that the length of the hypotenuse of an isosceles right angled triangle cannot be expressed as the quotient of two integers, i.e. the square root of two is not a 'rational' number.
I have since then learned Cantor's proof that although all the rational numbers can be matched with the equally infinite number of integers, the non-rational numbers cannot!

The most brilliant speech I ever heard from Dawkins was his reading from his own book on evolution about the way the human bodies ability to fight off infection through the immune system. It was spoken so plainly and made absolute perfect sense, anything I had known or thought to have known went right out the window because it felt like primary school explanation suddenly supplanted by collegiate theory that I felt In My bones. Richard Dawkins, along with the rest, hitch, Harris, etc. Are needed at the right time.
Dawkins + Hawkins
Such atheists, especially Mr. Richard Dawkins, if they would have spent only a small fraction from their time dedicated to depart humans from the most important truth, God/Jesus, for a useful thing instead (such as solving cancer etc.)
it would have been really beneficial, as I did more years ago, discovering and posting on such videos both the simple correct treatment for cancer and the demonstration of God's existence, as anyone who sort the comments can see in my recent and quite recent messages.
I agree except Harris seems to be spellbound by leftism in a very non logical way.
@@filmeseverin you are really an ignorant my friend. They speak the truth and the need to speak about it is because religion is dangerous, for the very believer and for the people around them. For humanity's sake friend, before crying like the typical child-minded believer/religious, take some time to see what is more important here, human life. Not god, did you know some people give their life for god? kill others for god? love more god than their own family members? Sorry,
@Scott Scotty The Vatican leaves out a lot of what Jesus said. He is defined in Islam as Isa and he says a whole lot more than what is written in the bible. You should read the Quran to find out what he actually was about.
@Scott Scotty The Roman empire had a historian named Tacitus who had no vested interest into believing Jesus because it wasn't their belief and was prosecuted by Roman leaders. He wrote about Jesus being crucified by Pilate. It points to more than just speculative evidence and he isn't the only Roman historian of that time that spoke of him. I am unsure what more proof is needed to prove Jesus was a real person.
You are right even Islam doesn't recognize Jesus as being divine and I could see where people would have reservations against thinking he was who he said he was. However, there are many authors to the original scrolls of the bible and to corroborate such a claim in a time where blasphemy was punishable by death it doesn't make sense to me that these people would lie and increase the odds of death.
I guess its a personal experience thing but the reason I believe it is because Genesis 1:3 explains sonoluminescence and it correlates strongly, there is no way Moses knew about physics but yet he described it with that verse. Plus it accurately predicted the rise of atheism, thats a prediction unheard of during that time as civilizations of the time centered around God and that would have been blasphemy.
Also there is the fact that the conservation laws of thermodynamics will not allow for nothing happening after death. Energy doesn't work like that. Its not created or destroyed but yet some people seem to think we are capable of violating a law of physics thats impossible to violate. That is 50% of an atheist view proven wrong by science so the question becomes can they be wrong about the other 50%.
@Scott Scotty Bart Ehrman is an atheist and agrees that Jesus existed. The Christ myth theory is a myth. He wrote a whole book debunking it.
The fear of being publicly outed and destroyed is the main weapon religions use against children. That's how they get you to never question the beliefs. "It could be you that we turn against next."
"Science adjusts its views based on what's observed. Faith is the denial of observation, so that belief can be preserved." - Tim Minchin.
Minchin is great. "Do you know what they call alternative medicine that works? Medicine!"
Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1
Science is the search for truth. The Bible is the truth. Science will seek the Bible. Why do you think it is that most of the founding fathers of modern science happened to all be Christians? It's no coincidence.
If something is unobservable then it is like Schrodinger's cat. If you believe the cat is dead, but no one can actually look in the box, then are you still going to demand that you have proof the cat is dead? Until the box is opened, how can you demand that you have proof of anything?
Faith changes alot bro, it's quite adaptable
“Indeed, organizing atheists has been compared to herding cats, because they tend to think independently and will not conform to authority".

I have grown up in an evangelical Christian family as well, which has always been very closely connected to the local church. To treat evolution as a possibility is practically blasphemous. I have changed my thinking recently, and have made the decision to put aside the frustration generated by unsatisfactory explanations and arguments, as well as the fear of offending God. Well, if God is real, and since God must be the God of truth by definition, then in no case could he be offended by me accepting the facts as they are, according to the present evidence, and according to the logic with which we are endowed. Evolution offers me no reason to stop believing in God (leaving aside Dawkins's narrative, about which I have some objection), in fact every time I consider an issue I try to get closer to God with that issue. Not fearfully, but openly and honestly (as it should be), but without letting it affect my relationship with him. However, what I haven't done yet is share this with my family. Perhaps it is cowardice, but from my point of view it is not necessarily important. I do not want arguments or problems with them, and the fact that I believe this or that they believe something else does not affect their lives or my life or my faith.
13:35 "We are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in... some of us just go one god further".
That statement is so absurd. It is akin to me saying, "We are all murderers, some of us just go one murder further."
@@ethanm.2411 Don't argue with me, I''m just repeating what Dawkins said. On the other hand yes I will argue with you. NO that statement of yours is not akin to anything. Dawkins says most of us disbelieve in the existence of every god other than the god of our personal choice. Some of us (the pure atheists) disbelieve in every god so far imagined. Your statement says "we are all murderers" but some of us murder one more than the others. Take your pick, which is more absurd or elucidate Mr bard.
EDIT: Sorry for this thread taking up space out of all proportion to the content of Dawkin's lecture, but you can read a lot into a simple statement. And maybe people who use numbers of those who share their belief as validation off their religion should also agree that the greater numbers who don't share their particular belief greatly invalidate their position. After all that's how democracy and legal judgements work. And by that measure all faith is invalid.
R.F.Burton: "All Faith is false, all Faith is true: Truth is the shattered mirror strewn in myriad bits; while each believes his little bit the whole to own".

wooo weee he didn't ask us to go in the way of evolution and natural selection. He wants us to be enlightened about the actual truth instead of fairy tales.
I definitely go one god further in the case of naturalism. All these man made gods are delusions that separate us from our Creator, God, from and to whom are all things; from the universe to the atom, from heaven to our soul.
A lot of Christians need to show more respect to scientists who study God's original textbook; nature. On the other hand a lot of scientists would greatly benefit by acknowledging the limits of science and by being open to the profound truth of the inventor, manufacturer and sustainer of the things that he studies. How do you explain the computer software program, Paganini's concerto or the Lamborghini without its designer or author?
Living things, the cell and the language of DNA are infinitely more complex and built on a language system. Evidence tells us that such things are logically derived from a planner, a mind, an intelligence and a power.
We would do well to discard the little man made god of naturalism to open out minds and soul to the reality and person of our Creator, God.
That’s like saying we are all unmarried, because unmarried people go one person further compared to married people.
That quote makes no sense. If, Christians, Jews, and Muslims add another God to their pantheon, than they wouldn't be Christians, Jews, and Muslims. They would have to believe in an entirely different belief system.

The best way to combat theism is to just have a better education system which we need desperately in America. I would imagine that there are more atheists in Europe due to the better education system they have compared to America.
MrNihilist74 Maybe, here in England many children start school in church of England influenced establishments and though religion never dictates the content in the learning of science and the world we live in it does run a parallel lesson of bible stories and the teachings of jesus.
I think a lot of children from 7 or 8 are able to compare the two and fairly quickly dismiss the religious portion, those children who still believe in the God are often from religious family background so potentially the possibility of expanding the discovery and knowledge acquired at school is left at the school gate.
I have no problem with a personal faith and that schools teach about the world's many religions but when schools start the indoctrination of young minds with teaching that a religion is the literal truth then it troubles me.
Luckily my children do not appear to have caught the God bug 😊
We have more atheists in Spain, but our education system is as bad as yours (even more). I think it's more related with politics.

In the development of life we take it for granted that as such life develops it become equipped with mechanisms for its protection. In animals we have T cells, antibodies, and leukocytes, however in higher species like apes and especially humans there has arisen a dimension of life that cannot be protected by biological means, and that is the dimension of rational thought and what we call intelligence. With intelligence - by its necessity to be complex - protection cannot be administered by antibodies, T cells, or leukocytes so evolution, over time, has developed an external form of protection for the frailty in humans, and possibly lesser animals, stability and what we call sanity.
This is implemented by deputizing some complexity to the care of a higher entity which is created within intelligence to facilitate stability and security. Whether this higher entity is real or imagined is open to conjecture, but as it is a product of the mind and also has a necessary function, perhaps it falls into a twilight zone of existence in our understanding?

Absolutely one of the best speeches ever.
Proof and evidence have nothing to do with what is important which is FAITH in God. In my opinion, many atheists got hurt somehow and cannot understand how God could allow their suffering and then they lose their faith in Him. But, again, in my opinion, they have failed their test, showing God how weak their faith was in the first place. Sad.
Believe it or not, God is not the enemy.
@Jack Probert I received God's blessing so of course you are "wrong". Why, do you think I should change fact for fiction, God is watching, not at all pleased with your lack of faith. I think that if you asked Him to help you realise what a precarious path you have chosen for yourself that He would rescue you. Good luck.
@Jack Probert I do not threaten people, I just warned you. You do not seem to be very happy, perhaps I can help?
@Jack Probert When I see a small child playing in the middle of a busy street, I pick it up and move it to safer grounds. I am sure that you would do the same.
As a child I thought, “how can adults believe this fairy tale”? I’ve read the bible twice and the gospel a half dozen times. My opinion has not changed.
That’s because you’ve never read it. Or because you’ve never read it in a language intelligible to your mind.
@@allanliang9072 What? He said he read it? Is he supposed to read it in a certain way? The best way to read it is with an unbiased mindset. That way, when you finished reading it you can acknowledge it as make belief.
Without the eyes of faith through the indwelling of the Spirit of God, one cannot comprehend the Bible. St Paul says the "natural man cannot discern the things of God" for they are "foolishness" to him. You prove St Paul right: he knew sinful men and women would hear the message and read the scriptures and totally miscomprehend them: you need faith and you need repentance.
If you don't want it, that is your choice and that is your decision, but one can chose to be humble and open to the possibility, as millions have been. The pride of many keeps many away.

@@jrtabor713 well maybe if you speak of facts instead of quotes of fantasy books, or parables as you may say, we could take you seriously.
To use beliefs in a debate about facts is no different that trying to contain the ocean waters within your hands, just accept that you don't have what is required.
@RUSSIAN ROBOT Wrong. Atheists do not believe. Not believing in God is different than believing in no God. Any knowledge is always open to questioning. If it is not open to questioning, it is dogma. If it holds up to questioning, it it true. If there are discrepancies, such as Newtonian physics, the discrepancies are acknowledged until a better explanation is discovered: Einsteinian physics. If there is any indication of a God, I'll be a theist. Without any indication of a God, save people stating that there is one while offering no evidence, I am an atheist. It's that simple.

I fear that it might be too late before we realize how big of a crisis we face due to religion.
The biggest argument AGAINST Intelligent design; is that we don't have four arms.
I always thought that it was that we were eating and breathing through the same tube. It's such a stupid idea, and thousands of people die every year because of that design flaw.
Forewarned is four armed.
@Kakashi Hatake So you say the loving God wants people to horribly choke to death on a regular basis?
The ones that argue for intelligent design are usually the same ones that say masturbation is evil. If we are intelligently designed and the designer didn't want us masturbating, we would have shorter arms.

Robert Rijkers lol okay
Robert Rijkers I say let them come. If the believer watches the entire talk, a seed will have been planted (despite the near-certainty that the believer will vocally deny this fact.) Perhaps one day this seed will bear fruit & we will welcome another non-theist to our ranks; however, even if these theists never entirely "convert," there will always be that wee bit of doubt thanks to videos such as this. Watching this type of material with me is the way I converted my ex; once a vehement Baptist, he's now a confirmed de facto atheist.
Robert Rijkers Atheists do that even more than religious people do.
I love this man. He is wonderful.
He is but he takes it too far wit his antireligion speech. Religion is an ideology like democracy for example it is not inherently bad. Smart people refusing to participate in religion and lead religious thought is what makes it bad. It leaves religious institutions to be led by power hungry egomaniacs who would betray their own mother to stay in power.
P.S
He can also learn the vices of hubris from religion for example.
@@santos122122 You do not need religion to learn that hubris is a vice. You can learn that from Greek tragedies from where the word hubris originates.
Smart people also refuse to participate in the retelling of fairy tales or tribal convictions or myths and legends for which there is no evidence. That's not to say myths and legends are bad. What makes religion bad is that it imposes a faith on people, it creates a class of spiritual expert (priest, rabbi, imam) who is considered holier than you and better at understanding scripture than you and some of these experts are con artists and others are violent powermad psychopaths. It would not matter how many intelligent people engage in religion if they lop the heads off or set fire to those people who dissent.
So I disagree on pretty much all counts. If the guy takes too long for you to make his point maybe find someone punchier but don't expect me to agree with your opinion of him because I don't.
@@muttleycrew I agree that religious leaders need to be taken down a notch.
But advocating the complete wipe out of an ideology because someone decided to abuse it is a tremendous error and hubris.
As a matter of fact Jesus fought religious leaders of his time as well which was the main reason he was crucified.
Religion is a great tool for betterment of humanity building cohesion between people and shared value that everyone agrees to respect which is the reason it survived so long and still survives.
Not all religious people believe that god is some guy siting on a cloud in the sky passing judgement to people.
But sadly it i left to the people that take the stories in religious text at face value to defend religion because those that know better are afraid to speak out of fear of being labeled as being stupid.
I agree with your point about the Greek tragedies but sadly they are not as widely distributed as religious teachings are.
Furthermore Dawkins because is an intelligent and educated man falls into the trap of thinking that all people have the same level of reasoning and values as him.
People that take religious texts at face value will find some new god to worship even if all existing religions are wiped out somehow, but that new god will be something much worse than what we currently have.
@@santos122122 This guy right here is smart. His position is stated with respect and class.
I believe in God and can see a similarity between the fact Dawkins is somewhat preaching and it does affect his bottom line. He is making money on a philosophical belief and requires there be an audience.
The reason I believe in God personally is because I can't say why I believe there are 7.28 billion people in the world. Its an ever changing variable and impossible to count because death and birth rates play a part. It takes a leap of faith to believe it and that told me faith does play a role in humanity and so I believe in God but outside the confines of a single book or religious view. I simply didn't write off God because it wasn't God who defined himself and so I have no clue as to the nature of his existence, but choose to believe in him because of personal experiences I can't quite justify with a logical and reasonable line of thinking.
I respect you for your non-argumentative way you handle explaining your belief, it is a characteristic I wish all of us had to that level, including me. Thank you for your insight.
