  • Sure, the Mini John Cooper Works may be the quickest Mini you can buy, but that version can set you back well over $30,000...This Mini Cooper Hardtop is "just" the base model, but if you play it carefully with the options it can be one of the most affordable options for some serious fun.

      I had a countryman S from 2016.
Drove it as daily for 4 years, few road trips too. Great on fuel, interior is simple which is great.
The car started issues after 106,000 km
And yes I maintained the vehicle properly, even had transmission fluid changed at 90,000 km
The mechanic checked the car before I had gotten rid of it 2024.
They had told me turbo was about to fail, and timing chain was about to snap.
That would’ve set me back 10,000$

The base two door Mini is the one that nost embodies the spirit of the orginal Mini. I knew a guy that had a gray market Orginal Mini when I was a teenager half a century ago. Big difference an average adult, english adult could fit in the back comfortably. In fact two could. No other tiny car did a giant interior better before or since. Just Saying.

The gas mileage is absolutely brilliant. I have one and I consistently average about 34.5 mpg in my 2016 manual transmission. The car I had before my mini was a 2014 mazda 3 with the same mpg rating yet I get better mileage in the mini. The mini also takes corners like nobody's business. The only thing I don't like about mine is that it doesn't have the led headlights.

  • @PaulTC777

The 3 cylinder engine in the Cooper is the same engine as in the BMW i8 but with a smaller turbo, a Twin Power Turbo which is basically a dual scroll turbo (No, it doesn't mean 2 Turbos). 0-60 in the 7's which is not bad. To all the people claiming reliability issues, Mini's reliability improved after 2014 and this exact model's engine has been tested plenty of times and bought by other car brands such as Fisker. The new Fisker Karma uses this same 3 cylinder engine. If you buy this car buy it in manual and without solar roof. You will save weight and money. My manual Mini Cooper weights 1065kg (2350 lbs) and its a blast to drive. I bought it dark green (BRG) with white roof, white stripes and black victory spoke wheels (same as in the video).

I have almost exactly the same car as this. Same model and trim, same color (white silver metallic), same transmission, except 4 door and different wheels. Great car. I average 34mpg in mixed driving; 40 on the highway unless it’s very cold. My only complaint is that the front pads needed replacement at only 23k miles, and I don’t drive it hard.

I see this appears to be a 21 model. Does anyone have any opinions on whether the 22+ model is better or worse?
Curious about the comfort/support of the seats, thoughts on the new gauge cluster, overall thoughts.
Also, opinions on MC or MCS vs 228i gran coupe (FWD or xDrive)?
    Thanks.

I just took delivery of my '23 Cooper S but did drive a '21 model when I put the deposit down back in October.
I do prefer the new gauge cluster both for the aesthetic and because I find the fuel gauge easier to read. I also got the piano black exterior trim which replaces all the chrome. As for comfort, mine is spec'd with the 18" Pulse wheels which come from the factory with the Pirelli PZero runflats so the ride can be a bit firm. If this is a concern then you can opt for one of the various 16 or 17 inch wheels. The selection of seats are quite nice and feel pleasant to sit in, I have the Chesterfield leather seats which are well padded (And they smell amazing!)
I'm still within the 1,200 mile break in period so I haven't done any truly spirited driving but the 2.0L engine has felt quite punchy around town and on the highway. If you do decide to check out the car, keep in mind that dealers have the ability to spec the car with options that may not be available in the online configurator I.E. Harman Kardon sound system on the base Cooper.

@@WilliamRivera343 thanks for the reply. Sorry I didn’t see it earlier. The closest Mini dealer to me is over 90 miles away so I haven’t been able to look at any new ones. Good to know about some of the options. I prefer a sporty handling car. I’ve upsized wheels and tires and done suspension work on most of my vehicles (lowering springs and sport shocks/struts) so I’m used to firm riding. Prefer it.
Due to price and efficiency and other factors I’ll have to drive both but will probably consider the non-S especially if I can spec it the way I want other than the 2.0T.
      Thanks again.

For what? Review or as a series like “most mundane cars of the 90’s”? Don’t get me wrong there were a few fun cars for the time. Spirit R/T being my favorite but if it isn’t turbocharged, it’s not worth it in my opinion…only an opinion of course. I like the P and AA cars mainly and even the G cars.

My 2010 Cooper Convertible is always a joy to drive and use in good weather. Only question I have is what the heck's with that silly gauge called an "Openometer"!
Why on Earth, would anybody care how long we drive with the roof down?
Service issues?..... not on my Mini , other than Oil and Filter changes so far in 77,000 plus, kilometres.
Nathan's correct in it being a "fun' car, this is why I bought it, and keep it that way, it's just my 'toy'!

Yeah, I don't think so Nathan. You're "girthy," but I happen to be "girthy and old," so a 2-door anything is out of the question. Besides that, Honda just showed people the new Civic hatchback. And while it has a better looking fastback profile, it still has more room with the rear seats up, still gives you a spare tire, and unlike the sedan, you can get a 6-speed manual with it, and all for about the same price point. I think I'd rather wait until the fall and buy that Honda instead. Good video, though. 🤙!

I had a 2004. The problem with that generation is all the electronic nannies that mess the car up. I had to replace the accessory drive belt, just a simple belt! This caused the car to throw codes, thinking there was a misfire. No way to fix this without driving out of state as there is no Mini dealer in Idaho. With the codes present, the traction control was disabled. You do not want a car this small to be without traction control in the snow. I was driving the car in that condition, it spun out on its own and wrecked. That was the end of it.

They actually have improved with reliability in the 3rd generation and I am a mechanic. I own one of these and I absolutely love it. It puts a smile on my face and it feels so much more put together than other hatchbacks. For the base model the only thing I'd compare it to is the mazda3.

  • @CliffWarren
    @CliffWarren 3 года назад

Mine was a disaster. One of many stories.... guess what good a 50 mile run-flat tire does you in rural Idaho? I was literally stuck on the side of the road without a spare. Then the electronic nannies will shut the car down if you had burritos for lunch. I’m not kidding. If I list the six worst cars I’ve owned, they are all European.
