This is a Motormouth couple car review of the Mini Cooper S 5-door premium compact car.In Canada, we call it the 5-door but in the US, it’s the 4-door. Either way, you’ll have a lot of fun in this new model. The 5-door/4-door comes with two engine options and a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. The base engine is a 1.5L turbocharged 3-cylinder with 134 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. The Cooper S we are driving has a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder with 189 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. The 5-door/4-door Cooper S offers a dynamic, engaging and lively drive. In the city, it’s easy to manoeuvre in and out of traffic and those tight parking spots are a breeze, it combines driving fun and practicality all in one. This MINI has the qualities of a small car but more spacious and comfortable for passengers and luggage. The wheelbase is 2.8 inches longer than the MINI 3-door and has an increased body length of 6.3 inches. It offers 1.5 inches more second row legroom and an extra 4.4 cubic feet behind the second row. In overall cargo capacity, it gains 6.7 cubic feet. This MINI doesn’t come with a lot of standard features, but you do get a standard 8.8” touchscreen, a 5.5” digital instrument cluster and leatherette seating. One up from the base in the Premier trim, Signature in the US includes, heated front seats, Apple Carplay, there is no Android Auto and a panoramic sunroof. The heated steering wheel is standard in the Premier trim but in the US, you have to move up one more trim to the Iconic to get the heated steering wheel. We are testing the Cooper S 5-door with the Premier + package for $8,600 CAD, it comes with a head-up display, wireless charger and a Nappa leather heated steering wheel plus all the features in the Premier package. It also has grey leather upholstery for an extra $2,250 CAD. Our test model is $43,630 CAD. The Cooper S 5-door/4-door starts at $30,090 CAD/$27,900 USD. For fuel economy, this MINI gets 8.9L/100km, 28 MPG city and 6.6L/100km, 38 MPG highway.

Owned one 4 years. Zero problems. Solid and reliable.
.
I had the first year 4 door S.
It was a 2015, and I drove it for 7 years with no issues.
Nothing can beat the smile to dollar ratio this car brings to its owner!!!
This or A class?
The A class is a beautiful car. Unfortunately, I can't afford the cost of ownership.
@@Bambotb consider bmw 1 series, still fun to drive (maybe not too exausted like a mini but surely better than aclass) but still more confortable and more capable/bigger
@@enricocolombo the mini is a lot better looking car than the bulky series1...
In a world ubiquitous crossovers and SUVs, this is such a cool car with distinct styline that is aging well with time. Great review, love it, love that "what a pretty colour'
Have a 2015 Mini Cooper 5 door, still loving it today. It has enough room to haul 2 kids for school, a lot more room if you fold down rare seats. It's one of the very few cars I don't get bored after couple years. I think the old dash and front look better. Just had an expensive fix, but it's trouble free in the last 7 years, so overall not expensive to maintain.
The gardener is doing a nice job on that tall hedge!
I'm a huge mini fan and love your videos. Totally would buy
"I love the stiff suspension with precise steering" too. Need me a mini.
That guy takes good care of his nice hedge
It takes him a few weeks to get it done.
🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I stumbled across your channel yesterday and since I'm on my third Mini, was interested in watching your reviews. First, I absolutely love your channel! You guys do such a fabulous job with both the pros and cons of owning a MIni Cooper. That said, I disagreed with the one negative comment that was made regarding how there hasn't been many changes over the years to the overall style. For me, there has been too many changes in order to modernize the brand. They need to stick with the retro look. I remember the days when all the cars looked different from each other and nowadays, with very few exceptions, they all look relatively the same. No artistic characteristics that makes the car unique. The dashboard of the Mini should keep as close to the original style as possible. Trying to keep up with the Jones mentality is what's ruining the auto industry. The Mini roadster was so cool! I understand sales weren't going well, but to discontinue it was a mistake. The trend at that time was to make larger vehicles to please the damn soccer moms. Okay, I'm off my soap box now.
Thanks again for your informative videos.
As my first car was a 1970 2-door Mini Estate (Traveller?), I obviously love most of the Mini variants. Perhaps my personal favourite was the ultra rare .... Mini “inspired by Goodwood”. Essentially ... a Mini that Rolls-Royce’s design team splashed some of their magic/craftsmanship onto (akin to Aston Martin’s Cygnet). These were some of the few benefits of the 2012 CAFE fuel obligations/accommodations (mandatory). Mini has completely nailed the retro design when BMW relaunched the British brand. And their very conservative updates (aside from that digital gauge screen) have served them well. They have become ageless. Well done them. Thanks for the video.
Cute & fun to drive city car, it's MINI Good review & info caption
Power couple's review 🥳🥳🥳, love the 2 door Mini, great little cars to look or be seen in 😋👯♂️
Thank you so much! I had so much fun with it.

In the UK automatic is a luxury. I'm a mini cooper driver manual but opting for auto next time. Cooper S next choice. Love your channel guys. Thanks.
Really appreciate the footage of Andrea learning to drive manual! Reminds me of how I learned haha.
Hi guys,
Thanks for the review on the mini
love unique rides well done you guys ..
Thank you!
Man, these minis are so fun to drive. I test drove a convertible Cooper S and it was love at first site. Darn my kids with all of their stuff and living downtown Toronto with only 1 parking pad spot..
Hi Andrea & Zack: You guys do such an amazing job on these reviews. I love the format; I've started to take a break to make my coffee to enjoy the review even more. :) Cheers, Paul
Thank you so much for the kind words, really glad you are enjoying our reviews.

I just ordered a 4 door Cooper S in island blue with light grey interior I’m excited
Love my 2020 Mini Cooper S Countryman, 2022 on the way!
I’ve owned the same car since 2022. It’s a great car, I live in the Uk and drive a lot in London. The Cooper S 5 door is just perfect in the city.
I like the new used car option segment. Great change.
Awesome, thank you!
I have the 2017 5-door Mini Cooper base model in the same colour, with no racing stripes, but with black wheels. The look hasn't changed much, other than the British Union Jack shown in tail lights for the newer models. In the 5 years of ownership, I've had exactly zero problems with the car. And the maintenance has been also minimal with 3 years of free maintenance and 4 years of a comprehensive warranty. I only had to take the car to have it serviced once every year. For the first three years, I paid nothing. Fourth and fifth years, the maintenance service came out to $450 each time. For both of the last two years, each time, I also had to get my brake jobs for the front and then the rear brakes which cost me around $800 each time. Overall, I have had to pay very little for maintenance, compared to my second car which is a 2013 Mazda 3. I leased this car when I got it, and I loved it so much that I bought it out when my lease was up. I've had three Mini's in a row - 2010 two-door base manual, 2013 two-door base automatic, and 2017 five-door base automatic. Yes, I bought three Mini's in a row because I love that car so much. The base model is plenty of power, more power than you ever need. My 2017 Mini was before they switched to DSG transmissions, yet it drives so smooth - like a DSG, with no sluggish undecided lurches that you typically find in small economy cars like my Mazda with automatic transmission. If you're going to go for that 2013 base Mini, I highly suggest you find a manual. I had no reliability issues with my 2013 automatic, but it was a 1.6 naturally aspirated non-turbo engine putting out only about 120 horses, coupled with it being an automatic, it was painfully slow and sluggish when merging onto the highway. It just wasn't fun. But I had no feelings of being underpowered or being sluggish with my 2010 manual Mini which had the same engine as the one in the 2013 model. I would never get an automatic transmission Mini if it's less than 2014 model year. The year 2014 was the year when Mini had turned to three and four-cylinder turbo engines, and the automatic transmission also improved. I think Mini started to offer DSG transmissions starting last year. Based on my personal experience, all this talk of Mini's being unreliable and expensive to maintain is highly over-exaggerated. I have 87,000 KM on the odometer and I have not a single problem that needed repairs. And it was like that for all my three Mini's of the past and present.
I appreciate detailing your impressions of your journey with your Minis.
@@kellingtonlink956 You're welcome! I forgot to add, I'm getting 6.6 Litres per 100 KM. So it's been a fantastic gas saver. The only problem is that it requires premium gas which is outrageously expensive right now. But to me, it's worth it for the fun factor. I get nowhere the fun with my other car, Mazda 3 which is getting 7.0 litres per 100 KM, but only requires regular gas. So the Mini is more expensive to fill up, but I get a smile on my face every time I get in the Mini, while I just ho-hum, and say just take me from A to B, Mazda.
They are impossible to hate.... style wise. As in my comment (posted earlier), my first car was a 1970 2- door Estate (station wagon)... it got smiles from everyone. And the relaunch (BMW) of the brand made them even more attractive.... and liveable (heat was almost nonexistent, zero crash protection, no interior light, no power etc.)
Bonsoir. Super revew. Must seem very exotic for you, but here, in France and Europe, they sell Mini's like hell. Salut from rainy and foggy Paris.
Our local Mini dealership has had zero new models for three months straight.
If anyone can save manuals its Zack. Miata never change. Civic too. I so see Andrea booting around in one....stuck shift of course. Thx 4 the bonus footage
Love your reviews. Can you please do a review of the 2023 Clubman Cooper S All4….thanks.
I have a 2010 Mini and it’s still going strong. Fit and finish up to BMW standards. Reliability - rock solid. In my opinion all the modern doo-dads are a complete waste of money. Get the base car and enjoy it. Great fuel-economy and tiny car, perfect for city driving. Having said that, we drove ours one year from Toronto to New Orleans and it was fine. Limo-ride? No, but it got us there and back for less gas dollars. Case closed.
my dad just got a 2008 Mini Cooper s in red and white, 5800 miles and I never knew they looked almost identical to a 2022 model year
Got the cooper s in the U.K. 190 bhp 2020 version. It’s a cracker. Love the Union flag tail lights. And that’s Union flag not Union Jack. Only Union Jack when at sea. 👍
I'm waiting for the new Acura Integra . I love it ❤️❤️
You guys put Tiguan holds 51% of its value in the specs at the end 😂 oops. Great video as always ❤️😂
Oops our mistake...typo. Glad you enjoyed the review.
Thanks for the review Andrea and Zack... if I may share an observation... Zack, you need to up your wardrobe style, not trendy but stylish...make a pit stop into Massimo Dutti, Ted Baker or Harry Rosen 😉, in comparison Andrea is always impeccably dressed! Zack does a great job of blindspot monitoring.😆
Wish there was an option to go for the analogue instrument cluster. Also, I think they should’ve kept the fog lights.
But that island blue color is pretty cool 💙
All your videos are first class but I'm really missing the "night lights" from your reviews.
16:02 I have to disagree, I like the fact that the look hasn’t changed much all the year - just like the 911.
This is a very good car and the fit & finish is top notch. My only nitpick is the front 4:05. The black grill surround trim going from the hood all the way down to the lower bumper cover looks odd and throws off the lines. Mini should have kept the previous look with a distinctive grill on top and bottom.
Couple car review ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much!
I feel like that landscaper is in almost all your videos
Hello guys!!! Will you review the Mini Cooper JCW Automatic as well if you can. Thank you in advance!!!

You either want a mini or you don’t, you either get it or you don’t 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️ I got three Mini’s and neither one of them has caused me any issues other than oil changes and gas and they are driven all year long in the winters of Alberta 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️ my Ram Truck caused nothing but issues in 3 years of ownership 😳😳😳
Wow, thanks for sharing!
My wife owns a 2015 mini coooer 3 door hardtop with 1.5 litre 3 cylinder and it has 134 Hp but 189 lb fr torque unlike the new one… what happened? We opted out of copper S in 2015 as we test drove both and same torque for less money sealed the deal!
We're gonna do it like The Italian Job.
I'm looking for a new 2022 two door, awd, diesel. Do they make this?
Hi! How reliable are the new Mini’s? Mini JCW and Cooper S
Andrea is always smiling 😁. Love that ! 👍
I’m 6’3” so I don’t think anything “mini” would work for me 😊
nice
Is it worth, getting a mini used? I really like it and want it as my secondary car (for my wife) :D
These are for fun. Any reliability, functionality, or practicality is a bonus not a feature. Makes you look forward to driving - except on super bumpy roads.
They really need a full size round screen in the center
You can put roof rails on the top
You guys have great reviews, really enjoy the format and spousal banter. I've got two Brit cars in the garage, a Jag Type R Coupe and just added a 23 Cooper S. The Mini is not just an absolute joy from behind the wheel, but also has the right mix of quirks and interesting details that adds some character like no other brand. BTW, I looked at a GTI as a primary alternative, but can't stomach the buttonless cockpit. The MX-5 is great, but lacks utility for my use case. Also looked at the Mazda 3, but they need to bring back a sportier version to catch my interest.
Is this car good in snow? Is it reliable?
Was looking at Mini 3 door. Price was a non deciding factor. Options escalated price just like BMW. Fun to drive for sure. Opted for GTI AUTOBAHN and never looked back.
Great review as always!! But maan those
wheels are fugly! I would pay to get rid of them!
Haha, certainly unique. Thanks for watching.
Super
Thanks
i drove my mini 165k no problems
Rent the thing and do not by it for the long term. Fun for a while.
we only spend $200 for repairing and maintaining for our first 4 years of owning the mini clubman
That's great, thanks for sharing!
For fun and space I think the only competition would be Toyota Yaris?
Damn shame that a BMW owned line still has a reputation of being semi-reliable. Still, it's a cute lil car for a couple or a single person for getting around....but you gotta pony up some cash for the AWD model if you live in a snowy winter locale.
We have a kona 1.6T with 185 HP and torque and a 7 speed DCT. It feels way faster than it is, everything is stiff and you can throw it into a corner. Seems like this is the more expensive version of that.
I really like the Kona 1.6T, what a lively and entertaining little crossover.
Wouldn't the Kona turbo be more of a competitor to the Mini Countryman?
@@jillthompson6110 Yes, you are right, it is a crossover and a fun one at that.
Larger battery in their S EV and it would be a total winner. EV version takes care of the expensive maintenance issue people complain about. Lower center of gravity and quick EV acceleration makes driving it even more fun. Total Mini EVs are the way to go.
Is it good for 6 feet people
If you think those wheels are ugly, just look at the Cooper SE (electric) and it's electrical outlet wheels.
whoever want one of these...please..I beg you...get the manual...so much more fun...and we need to save the manuals!!!
Two door Jeep Wrangler review?
Her voice exactly sounds like the computer voice they use for the standard car tour videos they use on car dealer channels
14:52 Mini Copper Tiguan lol
I can't understand why NOT changing the look is a detriment! So many iconic cars have been redesigned into blandness. That said, though I adore the look of Minis, I just can't spend that much and have it in the shop so often. That a car company would expect me to be down with that, is an insult to my intelligence.
I agree, most of the new vehicles are not unique. Love my 2020 three door Mini, but my older Mini's were even better, especially the Roadster.
@@whogrl My heart skips a beat every time I see one!
how about the reliability history of mini ?
Did you watch the video?
My friend had a mini for 5 years,he used to spent most of the weekends in car shop fixing his car 😂
They’re really getting away from the nostalgia of the Cooper. That’s what attracts people to Mini. Go back to analog dash, fix the front end (ugly), don’t charge the same for manual when it is available. The Cooper S is way too expensive in Canada. $37,236 CAD for the base 3 door Cooper S. Crazy! Premier + trim to get a sunroof is $40,000!
2006 was the last true Mini Cooper..
Good morning u 2 !

Nothing but issues with ours, I would advise potential buyers take an extended warranty, so far saved us thousands…A good drive though, pretty much a BMW for less money.
What year and how many miles?
Seems like a neat car to drive, but too expensive
Manual no longer available now
You can buy a Golf R with AWD for the price of this POS! VW's aren't known for being super reliable but if the choice was between the two no contest
Since the reintroduction of the Mini in 2002, their models just keep getting bigger and uglier all the time.
Go back and look at a 2004 Mini. It looked soooo much better. Next, they'll make a full-sized SUV.
Its 4000 for the next upgrade and then 8000 for the top upgrade
The title of the review, "Nothing else like it!", says it all. MINI fans are committed both to the brand's strengths and its eccentricities. I recently took a lightly used MINI for an extended test drive when I was looking for a car for my 17 y/o daughter. With the exception of a few bells and whistles it was nearly identical to the one I drove when I was shopping in 2013. Now as then, it was great fun to drive but when I returned to the dealer and got back in my GTI, there was no question in my mind that the VW was a far more solid vehicle (imo). I certainly understand the MINI's appeal but I think its future remains trapped by the expectations and preferences of its (shrinking) fan base.
I used to have a 2008 VW GTI, and I loved that car. It probably is the best driving car I've ever owned. If I didn't get the Mini, I'd probably get the GTI. The Mini handles great overall, but when it comes to cornering, I think the GTI is by far the best gripping cornering car I've ever owned. I disagree with you that the Mini is less solid than the GTI. They both are solid cars. The Mini has a harsher ride due to its small wheelbase and a very tight sporty suspension, while the GTI is more of an all-arounder which can be a comfortable long-distance driver and a mean-spirited sports car when you want it to be. Despite the small size, the Mini's doors are thick and the doors close with a big satisfying thunk. They are built like tanks and they certainly are not light economy cars with thin flimsy doors and frames.
@@jillthompson6110 I suspect that we differ very little in our opinions on the "solidity" of the MINI and the GTI. Perhaps I should have said that the GTI feels more "substantial" than more "solid." Over the last decade I've had occasion to cross-shop various MINI models three times. Back in 2012 I went with the last of the German built MK6 GTIs and in 2018 I purchased my current MK7.5 GTI after deciding that it was more adequate for my needs and priorities and significantly less expensive than a comparably equipped MINI.
As I noted above, I was recently shopping for a vehicle for my daughter. (In part so she would stop constantly badgering me to borrow my GTI.) I thought a used MINI would be a perfect choice. So off we went to a local dealer who had a low mileage 2014 (as I recall) model. I found it a delight to drive but as I said less "substantial" than my GTI. My daughter was less enamored. She found the interior, especially the instrumentation with the circular center display, "strange." (I began to feel I had failed in a major way as a parent.) So we passed on the MINI and it sold to a young woman with better taste than my daughter several hours later.
All is well that ends well, though. I happened across an immaculate 2012 Volkswagen CC sedan with only 45K miles from private party at a great price (for these crazy days). Amazingly it came with a manual transmission and my daughter fell in love with it. (Frankly, I suspect she wanted a "stick" to impress her boyfriend.) She has since become adept at driving an MT vehicle and I can enjoy pestering her to borrow it rather than the other way around. 😁
I think someone on the design team must have been out on the town the night before designing those wheels. They look really bad. Wheels can make or break a first impression of a car in my opinion.
But they look uber sharp IMO going down the road.
I got rid of My Golf Kart for a Mid sized SUV that gets twice the fuel economy. EVs and hybrids will bring back the Large cars of the 60s.. thank goodness ...
Back seats are not safe, if you get rear ended, good luck.
Manual transmission no longer available
You got to put it in as 😆😆
So fun and cute when it's brand new. When you look at the price and the poor reliability history, I'll stay away.
your loss. enjoy your camry
6 yrs and never had one single issue with mine.
For me modern minis are over styled…lights to big, proportions not quite right….my favourite of the modern mini is the original 2001 bmw version.looks terrific.
When I was looking for new car several years ago, Mini was high on list, but there were so many negatives when trying to decide, that I went for the GTI. If I were to look for a "new" car now I'd be getting an old use one. I hate all the digital gauges, it's waste for me. I don't need all that nonsense.
I would go for the 3 door Mini, the 5 door just doesn't say Mini to me. Those wheel, is a NO from me, would rather have the more classic alloy rims. Even if it has to be an SE, a normal rim and not the Power Spoke (previously call (aka) Corona Spokes). That's ugly.
IMO, they ruined the looks of the Mini with this generation; the cars to consider segment made that abundantly clear when it featured a much better looking Mini from the previous generation. If I were in the market for a Mini, I'd pick a clean copy from the first or, especially, second generations and live with the reliability nightmare that they would inevitably be. This generation is still a reliability nightmare, but it lost its looks, which is the umber one reason to buy a Mini, at least for me.
I have never accepted a 5-door Mini as a "real Mini", only a traditional 3-door Mini is "real Mini". Otherwise, Mini is overpriced and unreliable for what you got with its price. But leasing makes more senses because its basically a FWD BMW hatchback.
Mini coopers are not reliable cars?
@@trives99 When was the last time British cars are reliable?
@@A3A4Tom I know nothing about cars lol. I have a Kia Optima FE 2019 at the moment and have been looking at mini coopers for months now. I just love how they look. But it’s they’re not reliable cars now I’m second guessing. Everyone that said they owned mini coopers have said they are reliable.
@@trives99 Of course, your Optima is a much more reliable car than any British cars, when it comes to long term reliability. Guess those who said its reliable, are those who usually lease for 3 years and return them back to BMW. Probably bought a RFT tire replacement package along the way. Cause with anything broken, which should happen, those new ones are remain with warranty. If you love the way it looks and drives, I would consider it as a 2nd car while keeping the Kia as a primary daily driver. Its definitely not fun when you have to drive a rental. You can forget about getting a Mini loaner during stock shortage lately, when you have to bring back to dealer for repairs.
@@A3A4Tom how do you feel about Buick encores? I think I have a love for the compact suvs especially for the Chicago snow.
I’m sorry if Mini went away complexly it wouldn’t be missed … it’s amazing what people will buy… maybe BMW should engage a Japanese designer
I bet it overheats at 60k miles.
