Steel Baby Gate

- Now that the stairs are done and the basement is carpeted, we have a new problem, being that we have a baby who’s active, but susceptible to climbing up, and then falling down the stairs. So I’ll build a gate much like the one I made upstairs when this little guy was a baby.
The gate upstairs swings on half barrel hinges and this one will too, which makes it easy to remove when desired. The latch will mount into this space on the newel post so it too can be removed when not in use.
Now that I have a post on either side I can measure to get my hard dimension so I know exactly how wide to make the gate.
These holes are for indexing the balusters. I’ll open them all up to ½”, which is the short dimension of the balusters, and the partially drill at ¾” which is the length diagonally across the balusters. That way they will self center in the holes once it all gets put together.
Painting down inside the holes is much easier now than having to mask and paint once the balusters are inside the holes.
I’m knocking off the corners of the ends to help them get started in the holes. Also removing and inch or so of the paint it prevents if from smoking up the shop as I weld them to the frame.
These pipe clamps come in real handy for pressing the balusters through the holes. Keeping it square is the real challenge.
The balusters are welded to the frame of the gate through these holes.
I’m pretty much the last person you’d want doing bodywork on your car. I usually don’t have much luck with body filler...I’ll need to figure it out for the next big project that’s coming up.
The painter stained this section of handrail when he did the stairs. One I've removed a good section in the middle it will slide down over the top of the gate.
I enjoyed this way more than I think I should’ve. Amazing job! Simply amazing. Subbed.
More content! Just found your channel and really enjoying your process. Keep it up!
Hilarious verbal exchange after your kid hit the floor.
That good. I like your tools .
Buen trabajo!! Saludos desde España 👌
Muchas gracias por el complemento. En que parte de España vive? He visitado Madrid, Sevilla, Mar Bello, Málaga (hasta Tangier llegamos).
@@TheConcreteBox I live in Granada, its next to Málaga. We can drink a beer when you come back jaja Spain is not soo big.
What a great idea!
Nice job I wish I could get my boys to watch me weld and learn. At 13 and 15 I still can’t get them interested. Maybe when they get thier first car.
Even my dog is interested.
It's hard these days with unlimited Netflix, video games, etc..
Your boys are at a tough age. I'm lucky cuz for the time being I'm still a superhero. I hope it's lasts a good long time.
My goal is to have them TIG welding at the age of 10.
The Concrete Box that would be great, would help them rest of thier lives. You’re right about the electronics though
The Concrete Box you got a nice house
Hilarious stunt/ your son with the pliers! : ) Hey, how about you show us your assembly table? How it's designed.
Yeah I saw that coming... But he didn't haha.
You talking about the table on wheels?
@@TheConcreteBox Yes sir.
Ill need to make one of these soon. just need a welder, band saw, clamps ,a shop to do the work ,serious skills, and 100 hrs free time.
Haha you're not joking.
I would imagine every time you use it that the initial cost and time investment goes down.
Looks great and nicely edited , how did you fasten to the hand rail post.
Do you mean how did I mount the newel post? Or how did I attach the handrail to the top of the gate?
@@TheConcreteBox sorry, the newel post.
I just rewatched it, is it just a friction fit in the reese on the hand rail post.
Check out the previous video. Thanks! ruclips.net/video/QcGy21X5wHE/видео.html
I rewatch both videos and I also can't see anything else but the friction fit - which doesn't feel a 100% right to me. Is it?
Nice :)
Pitbull grade...
