This has been a really handy little rack for holding my TIG welding rods. I love that I don't have to remove my gloves to get at the specific welding rod I need.
I love your idea but I have to agree with Patrick when it comes to using PVC Tubes. Do a search on "Tig Rod Storage" from Weldingtipsandtricks on youtube.
That maybe true for aerospace & some pipe welding but for a dyi I wouldn’t be to worried about contamination from plastic. Leaving them exposed like thats gonna atrack lots of dirt.make sure to wipe them down before each use to get a good clean weld. Cool project just not done
The idea is nice, but you need pvc pipes, not only to prevent corrosion, wich is the minor problem (steel rods are copper plated after all), but primarly to keep the rods clean in an acceptable way to weld. The way you did the job, those rods will be covered in dust, wood/metal dust everytime you grind or cut.
Very cool project. I am subscribing. I was disappointed not to see you wearing safety glasses 100% of the time. It only took me one or two times getting steel ground out of my eyeballs at the urgent care.
You are definitely right. I should be wearing eye protection at all times.... Recently I had my eyes corrected (Lasik) and since then I'm much more careful about it. It's true, you only get one set of eyes. Gotta protect them. Thank you.
Haga thanks man! I need to make more videos for sure. I've got dozens of ideas for videos. Luckily for me Ian, there are great people like you who will share the videos 😉 I'll bet uploading a few in 2-3 weeks. Thanks man.
I respect the work and thought. Nice job. I would recommend shielding the rod from humidity. Aluminum rod will oxidize over time and you will spend a lot of time cleaning each rod before you use it. Not sure how much rod you go through in a period of time. Just a thought.
Good thought. Thanks! I wonder how it could be affected in a low humidity environment? You may notice I don't paint any of my projects... Nothing ever rusts here if kept inside. . What are your thoughts on that?
@@TheConcreteBox Not trying to step out of line, but even a coat of clear is better than nada...just sayin...for that one time you leave a cold whatever on your stuff and it condensates
Nice job, impressive looking result. I think I will cut round tube into sections and TIG it to the square tube (and run out of rods lol), I have to keep my rods in tubes as I have stainless/aluminum/silicon bronze and they can get oxydised in my shop.Gave you a sub as I thought your safety officer was cute :)..................even though ignoring PPE-typical safety person. Plus you support Jody.
I always hate using a hole saw to drill metal. They are the least expensive option and I have plenty. For thicker metal, check out annular cutters. They will cut much faster and leave a hole that looks like it was machined. They are similar to a hole saw but need to be run in a drill press or mill. What might have worked for this project (but I have not tried them yet) are sheet metal cutters that look like annular cutters. Some of them seem to advertise that you can hand drill with them. I like the holder and wish I had the wall space for that. It is more humid in SoCal and I don't like to have dirt and grinding dust on my filler, so I use pvc tubes that I glued together just like Jody at Welding tips and tricks. I was surprised at how well you filled the ends of that tube, but then again my tig machine is a 1965 Miller 330abp beast. It is all brawn without any fancy settings like some of the newer machines have to control the arc better. Great job on the finish grinding and sanding. Subscribed and looking forward to more videos.
Thanks for for comment. I'll check out the annular cutter asap. You have a good point about the dirt and grinding dust. I usually wipe down each rod before using it. I wish I could see your machine in action!
Just ordinary cold rolled steel. I live in the southwestern part of the United States so its pretty dry. As long as stuff stays inside it won't rust. Thanks for the question!
Love the idea. One of my issues currently, is storing partially used rods (shorter). I think I will use your idea and maybe drill a 1/4" hole to the side of each larger hole and near the front, to hold one shorter rod. What do you think?
Actually been fine. I live in Southern Utah, so low humidity, and no problems whatsoever. I have been welding with ER309 this past week and with a simple wipe down with acetone or alcohol I'm still getting clean puddles and blue or purple beads. Aluminun rod is fine too.
It's a good point. If I were in a more humid climate I'd address it. In southern Utah nothing indoors rusts at all. Since I wipe down every rod before use I've been alright.
I think it's a fair question. I have considered making tubes to put them in. Maybe copper? I don't know man, having the bare wires is SUUUUUper handy for just grabbing a rod with your gloves still on. Here in the South-West of the U.S. things don't rust unless they get rained on. Just not much moisture in the air.
Finally, someone who knows how a wedge anchor behaves
I would store the Filler Rod in storage tubes or PVC tubes to prevent corrosion.

Love that your kid was concerned for you! He deserved a hug. Leaving the rods out of a tube makes them look like art.
Can defiantly tell you're a woodworker by your working habits

You deserve more subscribers. Love your professionalism in your work
This is VERY slick! I might leave the ends open so that debris can fall out. But great design!
Damn...you have many welding machine mig ,tig n plasma cuting everyting by lincon👍👍😁
Awesome video well thought out! Keep the videos coming.
Looks awesome can’t wait to get my wood shop built so I can commission you to build some racking for me
Love this channel! Glad it found me!
Awesome! Love your channel!
Ian Moss.......same.....these are great videos and build ideas
Your Work Is so neat & Inspiring
Excellent work! Just watched this and your cart build video. Subbed!
Great job look forward to seeing more

Thank you.
Based on your name you still have both eyes at least!
It's not pleasant having it dug out, I learnt double eye protection for grinding pretty quick
Sick add video! Good job man, I'm going to have to do something soon.
Damn welding rods all over the place hahah
Really creative!! Subscribed!
Nicely done. Keep them coming. Once you get 30+ videos those subscriber numbers will really take off.
Yeah for sure, right now it's pretty slow going. Haha. I think you're right tho.
Thank you Andrew for your encouragement and support.
A great job. I would have attached it to the cart with the TIG welder. That way everything is in one spot.
Dude how do you only have 88 subscribers!? Excellent work. Sub’d! 👍

It did earn mine, you got subscription cool videos man hope to see many more
Keep posting! You will have a lot o subs soon ;) very good filming!
I'm starting to do welding here at home. So making something like this works for me.
I'm glad you were inspired by the rack. Thanks William

I’m making 1 but with a frame too :) nice work man
I look forward to seeing it Jeremiah. Are you going to post pictures or video someplace?
You are the man, nice work. Looks like you got some new gloves. When are we starting welding lessons?
Excellent, Thank you
looks awesome and you are badass father
Haha thanks! I'm very lucky.
If only i could incorporate that onto my mobile welding trailer some how lol
Haha do it!
Great channel and can’t wait to see more videos . I’m curious as to what TIG rod you keep on that rack, let me know ...keep up the good work
Thank you for your encouraging words.

ingenious
Damn nice work.. sub'd
Great job, what brand is that small end grinder?
I dig it. I'm going to have to use something like this.
Whoa, I like your belt sander. Subbed, cheers man
No tubes!? Genius!
Thanks! I recently sold the belt sander for $100. Looking for a sander to accommodate a much longer belt.
Cool man. I really like your filler rod holder.
What radial chop saw is that? Maybe list your tools on an Amazon list like some other guys do.

Did you see the video I uploaded yesterday?
You're going to be huge, can't wait to learn from watching you in the coming videos
Looks awesome! Sub'd
Thanks Chris. What videos would you be interested in seeing from me in the future?
Awesome job! I see you don't paint the steel afterwards, what steel do you use, does it not rust?
Just ordinary cold rolled steel. I live in the southwestern part of the United States so its pretty dry. As long as stuff stays inside it won't rust.
Thanks for the question!
👍👍👍

I thinks that's a fantastic idea.
Its been 4 yrs since this upload, How is the corrosion on the exposed rods doing?
Actually been fine. I live in Southern Utah, so low humidity, and no problems whatsoever. I have been welding with ER309 this past week and with a simple wipe down with acetone or alcohol I'm still getting clean puddles and blue or purple beads. Aluminun rod is fine too.

Is having the rods exposed an issue?
I'd imagine you could contaminate your rods if you are grinding metal nearby
Nice design and build otherwise
I think it's a fair question. I have considered making tubes to put them in. Maybe copper? I don't know man, having the bare wires is SUUUUUper handy for just grabbing a rod with your gloves still on.

what do you do for the sort lengths ????
What do you mean?
Great idea going to steel it and do the same
I would be flattered. Thanks for commenting!
Are you going to park a car on it a little overkill with anchors
They should be protected
Please make your kid whear shoes!
hey, try to make something ugly , just once,,, would ya? lol.
LOL 😁
