@@charliebleifeld4913 My husband, who is semi-retired, decided to take up screen printing and then then thought he should learn how to sew so he could make cushions/bags with the material he prints. He bought himself a sewing machine and some cheap fat quarters from Aldi (also look on ebay or in a local craft shop) and is just finishing up a patchwork bag. Lots of mistakes and unpicking but he is gradually learning a lot about his machine. He has now enrolled on a beginners sewing course at our local tech and he is not the only man so I would encourage you to see what is out there. I don't sew so he is doing this without any help from me.

That was a good lesson. I have been stressing too much over that first project, and because I have had nothing but trouble trying to thread the needle, the auto-threader hasn't come close to working yet. If you haven't watched all of the tutorials about your machine, definitely do so. I have a friend who is an expert seamstress and she spent about an hour with me last week, and I'm ready to try this project or a placemat, something simple enough that - hit or miss, I won't be too frustrated or have too much invested in it that if it's a mess I won't shed any tears about it.
Good luck to you other guys who are beginners.

Melanie made it so easy to follow the instructions and in no time I was done. Rushed to take a picture to show Melanie my piece of art and came back here to post it. Dear Melanie,
I found this video series as my very first exposure to quilting. I’d never sewn before and your videos were so easy to follow and your vibrant personality was so encouraging. You came into my life at the beginning of 2020- when we had no idea how much the world would shift. I became excited to channel my passions into a new hobby. I don’t think you’d realize how much you touched me. I had suppressed my creative gifts from childhood saying it was “frivolous” and a “waste of time” to have a hobby and channel joy into what I was creating. I have worked through so many negative voices within in order to create beautiful projects. I enjoy it immensely and the world of fabric and quilting feels so comfortable and calming to me. And you are the reason I felt welcomed from the beginning. I have learned so much from you, been encouraged so much from you, and it truly hurt my heart to see you undergo such pain and struggle. I pray over your family to find peace and comfort and to continue to feel your expansive love in all things. Your support and love has meant the world, and I’ve never even met you. You changed so many peoples lives, mine especially. Thank you for your gifts and your legacy.
    Much love,
    Hanna Jade

After watching this video and being so encouraged and inspired by Melanie's words and instruction, I finished my first little quilt last night. I can't wait to make more and plan on sticking with Melanie for other ideas! It was clear that craft-making and artworks were a labors of love for Melanie. It warms my heart that her family will have so many memories and videos to cherish. Thank you Melanie, may you rest in peace in the Lord's loving care.

I want to thank you for this series of videos. I started a last-minute Christmas gift for my mom. Following your advice it made it move along fast. It’s so beautiful. I didn’t use batting but a third layer of cotton and will be knotting/tying it instead of quilting the surface. The corners look awesome thanks to your tips. Thanks so much!! I will certainly be making more 😊 I’m so sorry.. I have just realized that she has passed. Beautiful lady!! 😞

I’ve since finished a baby quilt for my baby and currently working on a jelly roll quilt for myself and a bigger one for my toddler. I’m having so much fun! Thank you, Melanie. You are a blessing :)

After numerous years of sewing, I decided this month to learn to sew a quilt and discovered Melanie Ham's You Tube channel. My first watch was her beginner series posted 8 years ago. I have absolutely loved watching the videos and it was not until yesterday that I discovered through a video posted by her husband that she had sadly passed away. What a huge loss of such a beautiful person who gave of herself to others so freely. Thank you to her husband for keeping up her videos so that other people can discover the incredible person that you married.

I'm starting today. Unfortunately, I can't find a craft shop to get the stack of squares so I just bought a lovely selection of fabric scraps to match instead. I'm going to start today by making the 5inch squares and I'll prepare them tomorrow before I start sewing them together... All by hand, I'm afraid. It's going to take a while, but I'm so excited! I'll be making the quilt for my little baby toy poodle, Totoro. Thank you for this series of tutorials. You're inspiring people like me, who would have never try quilting before, to start a lovely and useful hobby.

My neighbor owns a quilt fabric store in Rosebud, TX. She is helping me make my first quilt using pretty much this same square pattern. She didn’t have the charm packs so I’m cutting my squares. I’m so happy for the is series because when it’s time for me to start the actual sewing it won’t feel so foreign. I literally just learned to sew, making tea towels, 3 days ago. I’m very excited to make this quilt as I plan to gift it to my niece for her first baby.

I'm a 14 years old girl. My mom is brilliant at sewing stuff. She made me a quilt, made dozens of handbags, pillows, bags, backpacks and even some clothes. I want to make her a quilt for her birthday in August. Fabric is no problem, our house is full of it. And what about a sewing machine? I got one when I was about 8 and used it like 3 times at the max lol. When I looked at the box, it said it's not a toy. That made me happy. I have an itsy bitsy fully functional sewing machine (the brand is Janome, I think my mom has the same but bigger), perfect. Let's do this. Just gotta find out how to use the damn thing.

To Melanie’s family: I’m first time mom looking to learn how to quilt. My family has quilted for generations, but I don’t live near any of my aunts in order to learn. I want to pass this art form onto my daughter - for it to be something special we share. I found this first video of Melanie’s, and got caught in so quickly. She’s charismatic, kind, encouraging and warm. She just immediately felt like a friend. At the end of this little 6 part series, I was so excited to continue learning from her, only to see that she had passed. I’m heartbroken because it was so easy to connect with her, but - at the same time - I’m glad she found a way to leave a legacy for you all. For all of us. From the videos I’ve watched, she seemed like a beautiful, talented, hard working person. Please know that people are still learning from her. Love to you all.
