  • Many newly minted actors think that they need agents and managers from the get-go if they want to become a successful movie, TV, or theater star. As professional actor, singer, and Backstage Expert Erin Cronican explains, however, this is a common misconception. As it turns out, taking a DIY approach can work for actors early on, and having a rep really isn't necessary until later on. Find out exactly what she means in the video above.

Hmmm... interesting. I feel like I can't access proper parts without an agent. They wouldn't even let me audition or approach them if I don't have an agent. I feel like I can only audition for student films or short films or unpaid theatre parts. But maybe I am missing something.

EXACTLY. I can book student films/ unpaid Indies til the cows come home. But I don't have clearance to submit to anything at the next level. So yeah, I definitely feel like I'm doing the right thing by actively seeking my first manager and agent right now

i agree with the comment above, backstage is a little biased. If you pay for membership to them, yes you are able to get roles. It sucks you have to pay

The answer is a little biased though isn't it? I mean actors can get roles from backstage without an agent so.....

Like many of Backstage's "experts", I've never heard of this person.
