- Roland SH-101 Zenology Model Expansion review.
Another real cool model expansion from Roland Cloud. Does is sound as good as the Plug out / boutique ? I test the 2 side by side.

Hi Andrew (I remember you from Roland Clan). Unfortunately the model expansion is not in the same league as the SH-01A (or SH-101 plugin). It vaguely reminds me of an SH-101 but doesn't hold up when you listen to the side-by-side.

I had no real interest in obtaining the model expansion, I was more or less curious to see what it offered and how it held up to the SH-01A and from what it sounds like, the SH-01A is still the better of the emulations, so I am really glad that I went the route of having the hardware box in my setup! thanks, @nu-trix. for those who want to purchase a lifetime key, Roland would be smart to bundle both versions of an instrument together. we all know the direction they intend to go (ie, zenology), so the ACB versions are really a legacy line or soon will be.
Your enthousiasm for synths shows in your videos. Nice.
Nitpicking: the A in ACB and ABM stands for 'Analog' not 'Advanced'.
Having these ABM models also in my MC-707 would be the proper thing to do by Roland considering the hardware is a lot more expensive then the software. After all, compatibility between hard- and software (and greater polyphony) is the whole idea behind this Zen 'Universe'.
I think it’s in their plans. You are right about ABM and ACB, I was concentrated on not naming the wrong one that I mixed up the “A”! 🙂
You think MC-707 owners deserve the ABM models? I have a Phanton and how do you think I feel about not having access to those ABM models. lol
@@RoyMaya The model expansions are now available for Fantom.
My short review: The model expansion sounds okay on its own and kinda 101-ish, but falls apart as soon as you compare it to the SH-101 plugin/plugout or SH-01A. I tried matching a few of my favorite SH-01A patches and it's just not up to the task. If you just want a similar kind of synth and don't care about the details, it's fine. But if you really like the SH-101 sound and want something that sounds authentic, either buy a real one, an SH-01A (even better than the original, IMO), or use the ACB plugin.
How does it sound now? Has it grown on you or is it still the same observations you had 8 months ago? I ask this because I am looking to get the Fantom and end (almost) all my lust for synths.
@@tonylancer7367 Some of the other model expansions are alright, but the 101 doesn’t sound like the real thing to me. You might want to sign up for the Roland Cloud free trial, install Zenology and the model expansions and see how you like it, as that will give you a good preview of what you’ll get with the Fantom. IMO it’s pretty good overall.
I have a License Key for SH-10-, does this entitle me to Poloyphonic version if I buy Zenology Pro? I can’t afford $500. For one bass Sound I want.
I think you are talking about waht Roland call "lifetime key" for the SH-101. It's a full plugin that you can run in any DAW. This Model expansion is for Zenology Pro and some ZenCore compatible hardware.
Is the SH101 Model Expansion different from the SH101 that is in the Jupiter X/XM?
Both are using Zencore synthesis. They should be the same. You can even exchange patches between them.
@@Nu-trix Thanks. I have a Jupiter on the way and I am trying to figure out which expansions to get for it. I suppose the JD800 and the Vocal Expansions are the two that are not in the Jupiter. Would that be accurate?
Had a SH101 with mod grip, damn! sold it back in the early 90s for $30........yes $30..

Fist synth I bought was a sh-101 and still have it now ,I have my Roland homage shelf with a 101-303-808 don't use them now but will never sell them
Trouble is one day they are going to break.
That's ok there never used anymore there just for the art like owning a nice painting.I am just a iOS user now my equipment days are done
The fact that this is only for the software version of the Zen core, and not for the zen core in my multi 1000 dollar Fantom is a slap in my face..
I’m sure it is simply a Mather of time before it is available for the Fantom... but I don’t work at Roland.
I hear ye Jules. These ABM models are integrated in the Jupiter-x series so I'm quite surprised they were not included in the flagship.
Also, as they are already up and running in the Jupiter-x hardware, porting them to the other Zen hardware would have been less of an effort. The fact that they choose to port them to software first is a decision that doesn't make me particularly happy.
I expect them to come to the MC-707.
I contacted Roland about it. They responded they could not comment on products that are not announced yet.
I'm hopefull they will come to the other Zen hardware as well.

Zenology is decent but the plug out plugins are better.
I keep installing and deleting zenbeats. I had it since it had that other name before Roland bought it. I still don't know or understand why Roland would buy an app like that with no massive following and having a weird interface, but I suppose they have a plan that is not obvious. I install because of YOUR enthusiasm, and delete because I just don't like the bloody interface. I can't get used to it. I just installed it this morning, and will give it one last big push. Good luck zenbeats. If you win me over, it will be a real accomplishment.
This is about Zenology, which is not related to Zen Beats. Unfortunately Roland has gone overboard with the "zen" branding and created a bunch of confusion. (Edit: I see he's using it in Zen Beats, but you can use it with the Zenology plugin in any DAW.)

I had it for about 10 years. It was in my studio but not in sight. A friend suggested I put it in the decor. I wish they would sell COVID-19 approved Mandalorian mask!

@@Nu-trix nothing wrong with that, but best sell yourself at the end, exactly i wanna hear about the soft synth first and then you might of grown on me, went somewhere else to get review. hope this helps in the future. Maybe do a survey do they want your t shirt or the soft synth. Just my opinion! Good luck
