Yeah this is the meta bullseye. Turns out brutally honest feedback delivered accurately with a humblebrag wink and robust vocabulary... can sell anything, even better than the notional professionals paid more to accomplish less.
I see you snuck in the question of whether the Deluge is bad gear. I think a lot of people would say no. It can do a lot of stuff. For me, though...it's only just now starting to get good, since going open source. The new keyboard mode for kits (only available in beta through the forums), which I took for granted would already exist when I bought the thing (because why the hell would it not), and spent the whole time since waiting for a firmware update to implement, has finally made me want to start using it. For me, not having such a basic feature (the button was right there the whole time and it did nothing but blink mockingly at me) just made it annoying to use, as someone whose generally preferred workflow is very sample-first. So as far as official in-house firmware goes...yes, for me it was bad gear, because having all of those pads and not being able to use them in the most obvious way was just...inconceivably stupid. But thanks to the community, it's becoming good gear.
Yeah I never quite got what this one was supposed to be. Aside from the "draw your own waveform" gizmo I think the MC-101/707 can do all of it just fine. I know that Jorb was all over the "mod matrix" when this first dropped but I was able to replicate those stunts on the MC-707 as well so... Also I can import samples there. 🤷 Nice video as always and of course awesome tracks! ❤
After hating it for about 2 months I suddenly started enjoying it. Did a 2 hour session at a party with just the SH and a Tracker and it was the most fun I'd had in ages. Needs some serious FW updates (and loads more PCM waveforms) but this is Roland, so...
Kinda makes me regret my thought of trading a Model:samples+a Dreadbox Typhon for it,thinking I could minimise my set and not really lose anything. Now I’m not really sure 😂 Thanks for the great video!
I own one of these and think it's fun to horse around with. This video is great and I didn't hear anything untrue. Hopefully Roland sees this as fair criticism. It'd be sweet to see what could be done via firmware update.
That synthwave track sounds great. I love Roland sounds, they're very musical and easy on the ears not really for more aggressive styles but you can always mangle them in your DAW with plugins.
So yesterday, with hard earned cash burning a hole in my wallet and a need to release some G.A.S. I ventured out intent on buying the Hydrasynth desktop (space dictates), after an hour noodling on the ASM I felt zero love for it all (contrary to what all the synth reviewers are saying about it), so I turned my attention to a neglected and overlooked SH-4d nearby, after twenty minutes with it I parted with my cash and left the shop grinning like a goon. Spent the whole day with it and couldn't be happier. Moral of the story, 'only your ears and fingers can relieve your G.A.S.'
Goddam it! I knew my lovely SH4D was in your cross hairs. I agree with a lot of your comments but it ain’t going on Reverb any time soon. (You made it sound epic btw)
I am guitarist that only dabbles in synth/drum machines for song writing. This channel has helped me weed out the gear that i would've purchased, just to turn around and sell it, losing heaps of $$ in returns. Thank you for doing the ground work for me! I just joined the patreon...
I wonder if all my gear is on this channel yet!! [not yet]. Welp, now this one too. I think I just enjoy taking on the challenge of navigating weird UIs. Because I really like the sounds on this synthbox, despite its shortcomings, and have made about 14 different patterns [with sounds] that I like. The two things I hope for [but sadly am not expecting] in potential firmware updates [had me laughing at that meme!!] are need for pattern chaining [very important], motion sequencing more of the draw waveform [to get a sort of user wavetable - currently you can motion sequence draw, but only the faders so it just is like a random square wave kind of] and more samples. I think SH4D and Gaia 2 have the wt's imported from the fantom, except SH4D got about only half of them. I recently thought of trying to hook the SH4d into my beatstep pro to 'cheat' and force it to pattern chain with some midi wizardry [because you can do so on bsp to some degree], although im not sure that is possible. Is it?
I knew about this ahead of time from a fellow RUclipsr who asked me to keep it quiet for obvious reasons. Knew it would eventually end up on the list like others i own did. Just Force, MPC Live 2, MC 707, Verselab MV 1, Modwave and that’ll be all my gear roasted 😭
Strangely enough, I really enjoy playing the SH-4d & I like the fact you can quickly create loops with it.. I think Roland will fix many of the workflow issues so it's got life left yet IMHO.
Playing around with it this week on loan. I quite like it for all the sounds it has. What I don't like are the velocity-agnostic skittle buttons, but I sequence it with Deluge anyways. Great sounds, quirky menu and nav.
Lol I love this piece. Been waiting for it to be up here lol. It needs a few updates to make it fire though. It needs to be able to shift notes of record off grid. And the fact that you can’t automate the rhythm section gets annoying but paired with other things, it’s dope
Well covered . So many synth reviewers went gaga over this , and it seemed too good to be true . Your honest take on the gear is moist appreciated . Hybrid zencore hardware that can't use zencore samples is a double whamny for a dawless guy , looking for a groovebox with sample record (not import). Why doesnt anyone make a TE PO-33KO with more memory , a powersupply, midi in, great polyphony and cv out ? Oh. Wait . I think Uli is working on one .
Two things you might have covered but I’m curious about are as follows. Does the 4d drum section approximate Simmons sounds? And, can that joystick function as a vector controller?

😀😀😀
Your synthwave jams sells it 👏🏻
Thanks!!!
Yeah this is the meta bullseye. Turns out brutally honest feedback delivered accurately with a humblebrag wink and robust vocabulary... can sell anything, even better than the notional professionals paid more to accomplish less.
Two episodes you've used my screenshot from the loopop video, I'm honoured ❤️
It's just a thing of beauty!!! Thanks again!!!
Bad Gear making Great Jams, as ever. Fair play, Florian!
Thank you so much!!!
Brutal review. Thanks for not holding back!
❤️❤️❤️
Your videos, and your music, check all the boxes every Friday.
Thank you so much!!!
Interesting insight, thanks!!!
Hot take, I really want one of these. I grew up on a RM1x and this looks like a much more synth-driven option for an all-in-one box.
Rm1x sequencer is eons beyond the SH4D's.
Rm1x is legendary!
Thank you!!!
After hating it for about 2 months I suddenly started enjoying it.
Did a 2 hour session at a party with just the SH and a Tracker and it was the most fun I'd had in ages.
Needs some serious FW updates (and loads more PCM waveforms) but this is Roland, so...
Let's see if it's an abandoned one or if they actually release the FW
@@AudioPilz one meaningful update at this point, supposed stability fix is blessed and i hope it worked - mine arrives tomorrow.
Thank you for keeping it real in an entertaining way. It's been "interesting" watching content creators try to market this bad gear.
Thank you!!!
Please add a competitor’s comparison or a separate video about what will you choose of different gears and why,
It will be really nice!
He drops hints and clues all over his videos about that, and he said quite a bit in the Verdict of this video.
@@Jason75913 wow pretty fast thanks
Have you tried the MC-101 or Syntakt?
Almost bought one recently but clearly hadn't done my homework! Hard swerve from me I think. Happy Friday everyone and splendid work Mr Pilz.
Thank you!!!
Kinda makes me regret my thought of trading a Model:samples+a Dreadbox Typhon for it,thinking I could minimise my set and not really lose anything.
Now I’m not really sure 😂
Thanks for the great video!
Definitely stick to the old setup!
@@AudioPilz Sounds like a good idea ;)
I own one of these and think it's fun to horse around with. This video is great and I didn't hear anything untrue. Hopefully Roland sees this as fair criticism. It'd be sweet to see what could be done via firmware update.
Thanks!!! Usually they don't sue;)
Bad gear’s my favourite Saturday morning surprise
Does it really not have unquantized recording?
Exactly when suffering from GAS venturing in brick and mortar shops is way better than online substitute shopping.
@@LukezyM yes, it really doesn't, but it pairs beautifully with a midi sequencer that does
Same issue with the first Gaia 2 firmware.. needs wavetable import and sample import into noise source
I really need to check that one out
I spit tea on my keyboard when you said "body shaming option" thanks.
"I like fat bass and I cannot lie..." 🎶
Always a pleasure;)
Goddam it! I knew my lovely SH4D was in your cross hairs. I agree with a lot of your comments but it ain’t going on Reverb any time soon. (You made it sound epic btw)
Thank you!!!
I like your music. Your jams are always cool in my opinion.
Thank you!!!
I am guitarist that only dabbles in synth/drum machines for song writing. This channel has helped me weed out the gear that i would've purchased, just to turn around and sell it, losing heaps of $$ in returns. Thank you for doing the ground work for me! I just joined the patreon...
Happy to hear that!!! Thanks!!!
Wow, that's a proper roast. Love it! Definitely will not buy this one. And yet, you make it sound great. ❤
Thank you!!!
Is it?
Yeah, I think they will mitigate some of the issues in firmware updates (like wavetables and sample import)
Who could it be?;) Great list of suggestions! Thanks!
@@AudioPilz That would be telling 😆 Oh no, here we go again. Question is, which one’s next? 😳
Strangely enough, I really enjoy playing the SH-4d & I like the fact you can quickly create loops with it.. I think Roland will fix many of the workflow issues so it's got life left yet IMHO.
Waiting for the updates as well;)
Nice work! Look at you and your best buddy, Roland! 👍🙂
❤️❤️❤️
Playing around with it this week on loan. I quite like it for all the sounds it has. What I don't like are the velocity-agnostic skittle buttons, but I sequence it with Deluge anyways. Great sounds, quirky menu and nav.
Lol I love this piece. Been waiting for it to be up here lol. It needs a few updates to make it fire though. It needs to be able to shift notes of record off grid. And the fact that you can’t automate the rhythm section gets annoying but paired with other things, it’s dope
👍👍👍
After dishing out all the misses.. you just slayed the track ❤❤❤🎉
Thank you!!!
... and yet ... great tracks again!
Thank you!!!
Thanks!!!
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. it's not perfect, but it's a lot of fun on the go ❤
👍
Fascinating take. Most written reviews were very positive with an asterisk about usability. You still coax great tunes out of it.
Thank you!!!
I use it with the syntakt and oxi one.
Very happy with it.
Nice!
Damn, bro, that Verdict is savage. But if it is well-deserved, then too bad for LOLand.
Another great vid, by the way.
Thank you!!!
Oh, it's all fun and games until one of your own beloved synths gets 'Bad Geared' 😳
lol
It happens to me almost every week;)
nailed it, Florian. wanted to be sold on this so badly but just needed a shower.
Thank you!!!
This thing is cool as hell idk why the comments hate it so much
You know the drill, one person’s Bad Gear…;)
Have a good weekend Audiopilz!
Have a nice one too!!!
This originally sold for 650 and now u can get for 300 on reverb and there is a ton of them and nobody is buying them
The sound is meh, so hardly surprised.
I'm glad you're here to tell Roland what we're all thinking.
Thank you!!!
“The latest generation of direct-to-bad-gear synths” 😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Have no fear, Behringer have some hideous toys screaming their way here 😂
Two things you might have covered but I’m curious about are as follows. Does the 4d drum section approximate Simmons sounds? And, can that joystick function as a vector controller?
Haven't found any Simmons in there
