Flashbacks of 80s computer games trying to fake polyphony with really fast arpeggios!
I have one and it's so versatile and unique. Got it for free, dirty and coffee stained from my brother in law. He complained it only made noise. 😌 Yes, glorious noise!
Someone get this man some more fingers for his rings
I used to have one and it was robbed from my flat. boo hoo :(
Sorry: The SH 101 had just ONE oscillator with 3 simultanously mixable waveforms, (incl. subwave) and not 4 oscillators! So, if you were looking for a synth to detune several oscillators, you had to look for another synth back in those days. A compromise was to modulate the pulsewidth via the LFO in order to get a more fat and sweepy sound, like a synth with the ability to detune several VCO's. Also that noise could be one of the LFO sources, which is still very rare was a great feature of the synth! You could make quite impressive thunder sounds wirh it!
“March of the Pigs” anyone??
Mr T called, he wants his rings back...
The only thing I can hear is Ken's Theme from Street Fighter II. 🙄
The Holy trinity of acid house: 101, 303 and an 808
This was the low end synth used on “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”.

This brough back memories. I played in a band - well, a duo - back in the 80s. As well as my Juno-60, my mate had a DX21 and had borrowed his brother-in-law’s DX9, SH101 and crappy DR-55. I soon connected the latter to the SH101 to trigger some sequences and we played live on top of that. Then I discovered MIDI!
Played this in the 80s. What a gem!
There is something special in this format, please keeps making similar videos with rare synths. I like to see how you pick up the mood of the sound and play the appropriate melody
I aplaude you in this video for not using any outboard effects ... kinda keeping it real ... or raw :)
You forgot to mention the built in 100 step sequencer really useful when you sync it to an external clock via the EXT CLK IN socket, instant 80's synth vibes. 👍
Bought one brand new with my Saturday job money when I was 13 along with mc202, tr606, juno 60 and jsq60 over a couple of years.. Loved that thing. Roland Cloud version sounds so close to how I remember it!
Friend of mine has an SH-101. When tweaked right it can make a great screamer companion to the 303. Perfect for Stay Up Forever style hard acid trance.
i love the sh101. i had one for about 15 years and i recorded some of the deepest sub bass lines with it. dialed it in just right and man.... king tubby would've been proud! great channel dr. mix!!
I had three unit of this in the 80's. It was entry model synthesizer in Japan and it cost 59,800 yens. Loved it.
