- Mathew Jonson is one of techno’s most distinct artists and live performers, and a pro when it comes to synthesizers, and here explores the Roland SH-101 as part of a brand new series on Telekom Electronic Beats TV. One of the most iconic synthesizers ever, Jonson’s experience with this Roland classic dates back to the mid-‘90s, and he ventures into its programming possibilities in the second part of our SH-101 exploration.

Thanks you so much for these, absolutely THE best videos on the 101!
The very best demo ever of the SH101. Roland should have employed this guy and then watched their sales rocket! He has inspired me to deep dive into my Gaia SH01!
really? There's 40 years of demo's of this synth and this is your "best ever!"?
Absolute masterclass. Thanks for this! Marionette is still one of my favourite Sh101 tracks.
I thought that was a JX-3P ?
5th Element.

I like how at 3:07 he just says "I'll line this up with the LFO" and then locks the LFO to tempo by hand with that tiny slider... you can tell the guy has spent a lot of time doing the same thing on turntables :)
Loved it, thanks Mathew and TEB for these series. Really shows that side of the nuances in simple analog synths that are often thought as "too simple and boring" or "one trick ponies" proving otherwise. Inspires me to spend more time on my gear until I know it inside out (here I come MC-202). We need more of these!
My first synth ever was the MC-202 (the 'brainy' version of the SH101), which was stolen. These two are the best synths ever for learning synthesis in my opinion. Got a SH101 and use it all the time, despite having 12 other "more advanced" synths on hand. And yet, after all these years with it, I STILL learned a lot from your video!!! Thanks for doing these.
And there's a part 2. Pure bliss. Thanks guys!
Excellent Demonstration 🎶😎🎶
Whoa - so using an external clock trigger disconnects the sequencer tempo from the LFO rate! Of course! I’ve had mine for over 30 years and never tried that as I had no other kit to trigger it with. Or so I thought - what’s this Boss DR220 doing on a shelf? Cool!
Use this thing for absolutely everything. It's so good.
NOW I WANT A SH101 SOOOO BAD
in the first seconds of the sequence I hear several techno tracks ... like UVB stylish & Endlec
awesome machine
well done mr Johnson !
dot.initial thank you Behringer
@Boofsquad got the ms-101 in black ! came back to the master to learn , an it just sounds identical !
@@dot.initial oh yeah bro. saw this video like 2 years ago. meanwhile i got a 8 track mixer, ms1o1 and a tr8s. this night i just figured out how to trigger the sequencer by the tr8s. magical feeling mane
@@dot.initialCan the ms-101 have the LFO at a different rate compared to the tempo of the sequence like he does here? It looks like he's still triggering it with an external clock, right?
more videos like this, great stuff.
this dude is incredible
Great walkthrough and lesson. Of course the one critical ingredient that isn't part of the synth are the delay and reverb effects....pretty much mandatory in my opinion.
Thanks Mathew. So old school. The SH 101 was my first keyboard. You have totally made me want to find another one.
Sh 01a
Thank you Mathew!
Absolute fantastic upload! Thanks so much! Miss my 101 more than ever though....
Good stuff! Right on man thank you!
Incredible sounds mat love the SH101 a classic sinth
Sick sequences, sheesh
Wow, that was a great round trip.
I need the new clone! Nice demo
3:55 reminds me of the theme from IN THE NEWS, a CBS news minute for kids that used to run on Saturday morning between cartoons
Mega Geil, hab gerade meinen sh101 wieder entdeckt im Lager
Splendid
Pls more of Videos like this. Great

holy crap, what a goldmine!
BRAVO!
Man I wish the MS-101 was that easy to step in a sequence.
Matt Johnson! oh wait :). Kidding, I love the vids. SH-101 is so great, as is the MC-202
some proper effects on it too, can we know which ones?
Can you tell us the actual effects unit/or units you used on these videos. Really enjoyed, thank you!
Yes, I agree. Some nice triggering with equipment I know very little about. He's making great sounds
@@spazkong cirklon
@@russ254 Thanks. He's making amazing stuff and wondered what that unit is. Quite an expensive piece of gear but seems well justified for a full time producer and live performer. I'll read some info now that you've told me.
7:01, wow
All of a sudden the Sh 101 doesn’t seem so expensive when compared to euro rack modulars for creating the same material
Most underrated synth ever. One of the smartest synth designs. So much stuff from such a simple design.
Underrated? It’s one of the great classics in electronic music.
lol underrated?
I know what you mean 🎹. It was a commercial failure. Look at it now, people going crazy for it
Hardly underrated, but one of the most iconic synths in history.
Is he using a delay or reverb? and if he does what delay or reverb is it?
Both. There are some comments already about it in Part 1 of this video
@@ElectronicBeatsTV what delay or reverb is it?
Deep spot @ 6:50
My sh101 doesn’t sound like that, if I speed up the lfo the whole sequence speeds up.... why is that?? Thanks
You need external Trigger signal otherwise the LFO controls the speed of the sequence
Good question
3:15 so many birds in my head :D
Now I’m picturing Ace Ventura with the bats: “they’re in my haaaaiiiirrrrr!”
Jonson is the don
now i know how he done learning to fly
3:44 Bell sounds
So where's his Boutique :P
He is using it for live besides the original one.
Greatness @ 4:09
How did he add slide/portamento on one tone only in his sequences in the beginning?
Some Music From Anders Jonsson He shows it in the first part of the video. It's with the legato option whilst putting the sequence down.
On the row of buttons with the sequencer, it is the HOLD button.
Portamento has Auto position, so slide is present only on legato notes ;)
Anyone remember the Surgeon track “9 Hours Into The Future”? It’s gotta be one of the best SH-101 techno lines ever, so good.
I don't know whether or not to sell my SH101 and buy a Behringer to gain £500 in the bank?!?! It sounds exactly the same but with extra features. So torn over it... Nice demo :)
You probably regret it. Nothing comes close to the real deal. Although the behringer one does come close, but it still missis that magic touch. Can’t go wrong with either one though
Hard decision …the out of tune harmonica on the SH-101 give it a warmth that you don’t really get on the MS-1. I also prefer the noise generator on the SH-101. That being said I love my MS-1 and would not be able to justify buying a marked up SH-101. I know Behringer has a bad reputation, but the MS-1 is seriously one of my favorite synths rn. Throw some chorus on it and it sounds even better.
…but if you already have the SH-101…¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hope you didn't do it. It's defo not the same experience. I have an SH101 and for me the MS- 1 doesn't have the same feel.
was Ms-1 discontinued?
@@seanharvey561 Agreed! I did buy an MS-101 in Black and it isn't quite the same experience. I still have both, I'm sure I can get a nice live jam going with the pair of them! The SH101 has some wobble and grit, seems to be missing in the Behringer. Give it 40 years if it can survive that long!
2:04 What bells do those sound like again?
and Behringer MS-1? is it good?
Identical. I had them both side by side and there was no difference.
@@juno6😂 Sure
@@dpalaoro ??? I have several vintage synths, several Rolands... SH-1, SH-2, System 100, Gilbert (SH-09 Clone), Jupiter -6, etc. The MS1 sounds *really* good. I borrowed an SH-101 from a friend and they sounded identical. Even the click generated by the VCA controlled by gate sound undistinguishable. The MS1 even have filter FM which sounds fantastic. Behringer really did their homework here ...
@juno6 oh my, your knowledge and experience with your gear is thin.

I thought i know my 101,,,,
Is the new behringer "ms 101" capable of this performance?
This golden question is golden and deserves a response
+1
yea, they have all these functionalities and more. the filters sound a little different but its pretty close.
The MS-101/ 01 sounds great! Top notch. The sequencer is limited to 32 steps which is pony and should be patched but i bet it won’t be. Overall the. Behringer 101 is excellent and great fun
this is arrttttttt
Yes!
look how industrial it looks lol
