IDLES have an absolutely amazing fan community. I haven’t connected with a band this much for years. Definitely recommend listening to more - try ‘Never Fight a Man With a Perm’ next!
Well done. This is the fourth reaction of theirs that I have watched, and you are the first to dig into the content of one of their tracks. Unlike other bands with such amazing musical content, the gold is truly in their lyrics. Talbot gives everyone something to dig into.
Love the slow burn build-up of Colossus. Seering energy. Joe Talbot's vocals are raw, he doesn't attempt to sing in a 'smooth' way, it's meant to jar. Check out some of the tracks on their new album "Crawler" - really powerful stuff, you won't regret it! Particularly like MTT 420 RR, The Wheel and Car Crash
I am an occasional punk listener, there are a few bands that I really have gotten into, but on the whole I think I like the idea of punk more than I do the actual music. That being said - this album specifically grabbed me from the first listen and I ended up with it on repeat for the better part of that year. I still can't really identify why I love Joy so much more than the rest of IDLES's albums, maybe it just fit the mood in my life at that point really well. They seem like class blokes too!
I think I’ve mentioned them along with Shame, The Murder Capital and Fontaines D.C. all new post punk bands that have put out albums in the last 3 years or so. Idles is probably my least favorite of these bands, just haven’t gotten on board with his vocal delivery yet.
To me the entire first part is the slow burn build up that totally pays off with the last part. That slow building intensity till it explodes. And yes, it absolutely rules live. I’m almost fourty, I’ve seen them a few times now, the last time I saw them I thought “you know, I might hang back at the bar for this one”, and then they started with Colossus and I knew I had to be right up front. One of the best live shows ever.

Imagine it live it's incredible when that second half hits ..
