@@Phanbot01 I'm all for the physical SIM to go away as I think your (and my) complaint is relatively minor compared to the advantages of lack of physical SIM, but I was also thinking the same thing. I have 2 SIM cards for the same phone number for my iPhone and iPad, and sometimes I turn off cellular on my phone to use my cellular plan with my iPad. Will that niche use case essentially disappear now, or is there still a way to do this with eSIM (having 2 eSIMs on separate devices for the same phone number / cellular plan & not having to "transfer" your SIM to another device every time you decide to use your phone number / cellular plan on a different phone/device)?

I’m a buyer for an Aerospace company. And while I agree Apple uses insane terms sometimes, Aerospace grade Aluminum is an actual thing. 6061 or 7075 are the most common for our applications. My guess is Apple uses 6061.

It's like of Ford advertised their truck by saying "we built this truck using aerospace aluminum" it would still be nonsense because they haven't explained any supposed advantages, just the name. Apple's "SmartHDR" isn't the same thing as the "Photonic Engine". Apple uses SmartHDR to enhance photos with high amounts of light. In mid-to-low light their "Deep Fusion" kicks in, and in low light Nigth Mode kicks in. This new Photonic Engine basically refers to a newer, better version of Deep Fusion, where the part of the processing of the photo that is done by the Neural Engine gets applied much earlier than in the past, applying the processing to the raw photo from the sensor rather than the final compressed JPEG output. In the end Deep Fusion hasn't gone away on the iPhone 14 models, but Photonic Engine now refers to the entire new imagine processing pipeline for mid-low light photos (in situations where it's not dark enough for Night Mode to be activated, but still dark).

Recently, there have been a growing amount of SIM card scams involving 2FA, so this gets rid of that. It’s actually supposed to be more convenient than physical SIM cards. You can see this on the cellular iPads where you can select what carrier and plan you’d like and it’s activated right away. You can switch on the fly. For some reason, it’s not like this on iPhones and you have to scan a QR code or call to get it activated. Hopefully, they change it to be more like how the iPad works

    • @CanIHasThisName

Installing an eSIM into your phone can be as easy as scanning a QR code. You can store multiple eSIMs in your phone and you can have them ready in a backup phone, activating them from the settings. If you want to buy a plan, you don't need to visit a physical location to get your SIM. This is also true when traveling to other countries - you just buy the eSIM before you even get there.
Every year we churn out billions of plastic sim cards. Getting rid of them will be a good thing.

For iPhone I would go Pro, or Pro MAX for the OLED display which is why I moved to the iPhone 11 Pro. Nice to be able to see the screen when I am out walking around, and in sunlight.
When it comes to eSIM I am going to have to check with my carrier to see how this would work for me if I need to move to a backup iPhone. A few years back I dropped, and killed my iPhone to a point it would not power up. I was lucky in that I still had my previous iPhone so all I did was pop out the SIM, and move it to my old iPhone. I was back up and running until I could get my newer iPhone repaired. Need to see how hard this is going to be if I have a new iPhone that only supports eSIM. Is there a KISS way to move my phone number/eSIM to a backup iPhone?
After some review it is looking like I may be moving away from the iPhone product line if I can not purchase one with a SIM card tray. Looking like no easy way to move from device to another device should it die. This is a deal breaker. At least I am going to get a USB type C port.
For now sticking with my iPhone 11 Pro with A13 154.9 GFLOPS supercomputer in my pocket until Apple comes out with an iPhone that has SIM tray, and a USB Type C connector that I hope is either USB4 40, or USB4 80.

As a lover of 3D Touch, it is true that most 3rd party app devs didn't really do too much with it, and 95% of people who own(ed) 3D touch phones didn't even know about or remember to use the feature.
iPhone 14 Pro is my first non 3D touch phone, and I still catch myself trying to move the cursor around & highlight text using 3D touch on the keyboard :(

Tried a 14 pro, the battery life is noticeably less compared to a 13 pro for whatever reason. One of the "big" new things in the 14 is the satellite SOS system, pretty big deal for those of us that go into the wilderness. Surprised they didn't mention that.

I really like the IPhone 14 pro, the only things I would change if i could would be having a usb type c thunderbolt port, and a headphone jack with a built in Dac that can play the high res Apple Music files. I’m not sure there’s enough space to fit all that in though

    • @thisistimmy

The tear down of the US iPhone 14 shows that there’s just a plastic spacer where the SIM card slot was, so there’s definitely enough space. Apple won’t do it cause they wanna sell them AirPods

Sim Card is a thing of the past, agreed! But eSim has its own flaws. Mostly when you travel abroad and want to use a different number and not the existing number. Just buying a new sim at the airport and start using it as soon as you reach a new international destination is just so easy. Whereas setting up eSim is a pain, also you need internet to setup new eSim, so incase of traveling abroad without data one is pretty much screwed

Sim cards are not archaic. They may seem like it but honestly they're still the easiest way to change carriers when traveling. Some things just make sense and should be left alone.

    • @CanIHasThisName
      @CanIHasThisName Год назад +3

This is not true. You have to physically visit a store and buy a SIM card. eSIM carriers can cover dozens of countries at a time and allow you to buy the eSIM plan and activate it before you're even physically in the country you're traveling to - all in a language you understand.
Physical SIM cards are absolutely archaic, people think they have some advantages because they're not familiar with how eSIMs work. The only problem is that carriers didn't care enough to start supporting them earlier, even though they were introduced some 10 years ago and available on smartphones for more than 5 years now.

@@CanIHasThisName I fully understand how eSIM cards work and no, sorry, but dealing with changing my carrier via eSIM is NOT easier than simply popping in a new card.

@@CanIHasThisName I'm familiar with how it works and no, I don't think eSIMS make life easier at all. Newer ways are not always better, something Apple has ALWAYS failed at realizing.

Esim has me worried mostly with how they will probably find a way to charge you money to do things with them now. Verizon charges like $30 to "activate" a regular sim card and I am imagining Apple adding a one time fee for switching phones or upgrading to another iphone. Once things move from physical to digital they usually find some way to fuck you

In case you guys were wondering the regular iPhone 14 has a colder display so it actually looks brighter because the whites are whiter,,, and then on the Pro Models the displays are warmer making it look less bright and put out less Knits because the white point is not as much as the regular 14.

Yeah. I need a sim tray. I work on a ship, I swap my sim out every time we hit a new port in a different region. In most Asian countries, a one month unlimited data sim is available at any convenience store. Swapping and adding esims is just too much of a hassle.
