  • This exercise uses specific, strategic positioning of the eyes and head to send body messages of safety to the brain. Once the brain receives and believes that you are truly safe, it will relax in the form of a yawn, sigh or swallow - leaving you feeling more calm, centered and grounded.

    The Vagus Nerve Reset -
    1. Lay down, settle and focus your attention and awareness to the presence of your hands behind the base of your head; where your head and your skull meets.
    2. Move your eyes in the direction of 3 o’clock.
    3. Maintain until you: Yawn, Swallow or Sigh. (Note: depending how stressed your nervous system is, this can take 10 seconds to 2 or 3 minutes).
    That’s it. Thanks Renee Ostertag.

I was skeptical. RUclips recommended this to me, no idea why because it’s not my thing, BUT Just tried this and it’s unbelievable… at first nothing happened after getting into position and moving my eyes towards three o clock… I felt stupid but just kept the position… and about 90 seconds in I had the biggest SIGH (the kind where you suck in three breaths like after crying) and exhaled. I feel utterly relaxed and amazing. THANK YOU

It's not psychic, but perhaps the product of cross referencing lots of information about us and making inferences from the spaces in between. Perhaps Siri and the girls tell tales in cyberspace. So far, those recommendations have been fruitful like yours.

I tried this it had absolutely no effect whatsoever. I think this is one of those things that only works if you believe it and want it to work . I would like to see this tried on someone that didn't know anything about it and didn't know what it was supposed to do then see what affect it has . Like the majority of{ alternative medicine} this relies on the placebo effect and the willingness of the patient to want it to work . What worked for me and had a dramatic effect on my clinical depression was intravenous ketamin infusions it had an immediate and dramatic effect. If you go to someone that calls themselves a natural path a homeopath or chiropractor and think that you were healed then there was nothing wrong with you to begin with .

Hi. I'm not sure why RUclips's algorithm suggested this video for me. It's not related to anything else I've looked up or watched. However, I happened to have had severe experiences with my vagus nerve. One so severe I blacked out at work after hitting my ankle bone. Later, I was told I turned gray and they couldn't get a pulse on me. I have a lot of suppressed stress due to family issues, marriage and trying to live above it all. My pain tolerance is very high and I believe it does more harm than good sometimes. No medical professional has ever informed me of any of this. Actually, I had no idea it was tied to stress. Thank you.

yes the medical profession don't even get an hour in their 7+ year education to learn about life trauma (rather than acute obvious trauma). Maybe listen to Gabor Mate and Peter Levine among others to understand how you ended up there. Maybe your personality leads you to more stress than needed as well. Good luck.

This sounds like a type of breathing/meditative/relaxation exercise. Please explain what this has to to do with the vagus nerve? I have a vagal nerve disorder and all this is--no offense--nonsense. If this works for you--awesome. But PLEASE call it something else! It is very dismissive and quite frankly insulting to people who have vagal nerve issues. And the comments sound like it is helping people; please keep teaching it. Please stop using the vagus nerve. None of this is impacting the vagus nerve.

I really enjoyed this exercise but wondered if there any research evidence base to support that it actually works? Now you may say the evidence is in the numerous people who report benefit but both of us know that can be the placebo effect which can result in positive outcomes in a whopping 30 per cent of people. So, is there actual medical science or anatomical evidence that this activated the parasympathetic/vagus nerve system? I've never come across it and I am medically trained. I am all up for alternative medicine and very open to it - like acupuncture, yoga and mindfulness - which have medical evidence behind them. But I'm really finding it difficult to find the medical evidence for this technique. Where is it derived from? How was it conjured up? Can you also tell me a little about your background and if you too are medically trained? So please, I am all ears and open to changing my mind, but just want more information about this Renee - where does it come from (origins) and the evidence base (either real anatomical and research of proven effect). Thank you

Also, "like brushing your teeth" .. it's really not recommended to do that MORE than two times, as you then start scrubbing away your protective layer too much, so not a helpful analogy.

Hi Mark, thanks for the comment - so glad it was helpful!
And yes, repeat with eyes at 9:00. Go into the direction as far (or not far) and comfortable as works for your eye comfort, many people try to push and go as far as they can and that can be hard on the eye muscles. Further isn't necessarily better, even going just 1-3 degrees can often be enough to unlock the vigilant forward fixation gaze and create a relaxation response.

      @marie-suzankalogeropoulos9249 2 года назад +1

@@nervoussystemninja If I may add some insight on this question, I believe a sigh after only 10 sec' would mean quite the opposite - ie, you're quite ready to move away from over-focusing, and give yourself a "break"!
As a matter of fact, OVER doing it, or - thinking it, is what being uptight is about - and the way this vid was shot, lead me to focus to the back of my skull in a way whitch triggered the yawning repeatedly and unexpectedly, in no specific position! . Previous attempts with the technique, from another RUclips video, had me on the verge of nausea, from straining my eyes, and trying too hard...
I believe your mere suggestion, about "trying to just get to where you are" is about as far as many of us can try, and the technique per se might, for many of us, get in the way, from doing just that...
So, anyways, here's to "imperfection", and to relaxed practice, when we can avoid making things worse for 70 %, never mind for the 30 who got a little fuzzed, better less than too much...! And thanks for that gorgeous tree in the background!
