What's that huge offloading race through the outback? I remember I think Eric Bana going on Top Gear and talking about how the race organizers told Pele they could only bring 3 cases of beer to the event, so people were going out into the outback along the course and burying beer before the race started lol. Aussies are the best.
I don't think people would enjoy the Adelaide track in 2023 as much as they enjoyed it back in the day. Those who are old enough of course... It's a fun little circuit but with only 1 (at best) overtaking spot and shorter than the Red Bull Ring. Nice one as always Sam.
@@Roguescienceguy So is Monaco and an increasingly number of people want it out of the calendar for producing processional races. I'm not one of them but reality is what it is.
As an IndyCar fan I always loved the Surfers Paradise CART/ChampCar races. Some of the best action on the calendar during those years. Hope as IndyCar keeps growing back to its golden years we'll see them back there on one of the overseas venues.
To be from Adelaide and to be born just after they left, and with me being a die hard fan that breathes racing fumes. I gotta admit it does hurt seeing it in Melbourne especially that intro you did. I recognise his voice from my childhood. Although I did visit Albert Park in the last year of the V8 engines and I still got to experience some pure loudness from an F1 car. But I would’ve loved to have heard them from home as Adelaide is so small and you could genuinely hear Mansell and Senna battling from as far as 12km away from the race track. It was truely something special and I’m sad to have missed it but I’m glad I have family members to provide to stories for me. Even little bits of memorabilia
I remember as a child being able to have the window open and hear the cars whilst watching the race on TV and was annoyed that the race was "stolen". Looking back I would not think that Adelaide and even South Australia could host in the future, even at The Bend because the state isn't significant enough to have an international event like F1. They couldn't even get an AFL grand final during the pandemic as Melbourne weren't able to host due to restrictions which shows how important the state is seen by the rest of the country. But I do also stand by the beer quote, don't or ever have drank Victorian beer lol
Great video,, As a Radelaidian and huge F1 and Ayrton Senna fan I remember this very clearly, I went gold seats across from the pits from 90-94 just, these seat also gave us access to the area where the drivers drove to the track from the Hilton hotel and still have found memories of meeting most of them and autograph hunting. Shops in the east end in Rundle St were even selling "kick a Vic" shirts after the announcement of the move. It was years before I knew that Adelaide pretty much let it slip as opposed to it just being stolen. My interest in F1 died when Senna did in Imola in 94 so I didn't miss it too much but have gain more interest again in recent times and will have to head over to Melbourne for it one year.
Adelaide is the second best race track in Australia only behind Bathurst and I personally think Adelaide is one of the the best street circuits in the world such gem of a track
A couple of random things I remember from the buildup to the first Australian Grand Prix I watched, the 1997 race, there was a protest against the race in the week leading up to it (including diesel being poured on the track surface and a threat to disrupt the race) and unconnected to the race directly, but there was a tram strike that took place that weekend as well, causing chaos for those who were trying to attend the race. Fortunately, the race itself went on alright, but the same couldn't be said of the driver who was (in theory) starting his title defence in Melbourne that year. Damon Hill, having been unexpectedly shown the door by Williams after 1996 (despite clinching the title) scrambled around for some seat on the grid for 1997. He found himself at Arrows, and the fall from newly crowned world champion to barely even qualifying for the race was palpable and to make matters worse, due to a problem with the sensor on his throttle pedal, he didn't even start the race
Fun Fact, I can tell the Thumbnail picture is from the 1996 Australian GP, due to all the oil on Hill’s car. Hill was running behind Villeneuve who’s car was leaking oil.
It's always amazing to me that you can hear the cars several suburbs over. Just needs better public transport but it's in a great location. As a kid I did love the Adelaide track but as someone from Melbourne I love that F1 is in my home town.
They could renovate Queensland Raceway or even the Lakeside Park track. There’s enough room to do so. But there’s the exclusivity problem that any race that isn’t Melbourne has, Melbourne has an exclusivity clause for being the only Australian race until the contract expires which is a looooong time from now.
If America can have 3, Australia should have 2 races. Im not saying Adelaide because it's a great track, but it just returned to Supercars. And knowing how much would need to be done ruins the track for both. The Bend is also a NO go. My local track (Donnington park in the UK) would be better suited. I think a track like Newcastle or a spec 1 Sydney would work. Bring back the old Homebush circuit of old modify it to work with the existing roads. Or even go to Perth and make a track in the city.
They should just alternate between Adelaide and Melbourne every year. Then everyone could have both, even though Adelaide probably wouldn't race well in modern day.
Going to the Australian GP would be awesome. Also, the prices for the races in the States are so BS high, and ask 3 of them are an entire continent away from me anyway, that it might be more feasible to try for something like Australian rather than something like COTA.
Living in adelaide and hearing about f1 WAS here is kinda exciting but sad, i have some great stories in 1995 my grandpa went to the adelaide gp and was sitting in a tree over the hairpin, LIKE HE WAS DANGLING OVER THE TRACK, he was in the middle of the track, and i went to the Melbourne gp last year.

I love watching F1 races in Albert Park. It's one of my favorite tracks on the calendar, and it's the first race of the season. I grew up with that race, and unfortunatly I never had the opportunity to watch F1 live from Adelaide, but from what I've seen on RUclips, it's not such a good track to be honest.
For some reason for me when I think Adelaide... It's two Things that come to my mind instantly - The 1994 Title Decider and Mika Häkkinen's ALMOST Fatal Crash in 1995... I wonder if these things did take this track PR a bit down with moments like those on the 2 final years on F1 Calendar... Or even maybe being the shortest race ever (That actually did happen) in 1991... Maybe they did, maybe they did not. As much as a likeable track it is (I mean, I don't hate it or anything, It does look nice in my book, and it suits the Second half of the 80s and early 90s) and did have some iconic moments that weren't that controversial like 1994 and 1995 were. (With the last one I can imagine the safety on this track being questionable by many F1 fans after that weekend.) But I still think that Melbourne wins my heart more. As a Season Opener or one of the first of F1 races... For me I like to think that I prefer Japan or São Paulo to be as the final F1 Race. Adelaide doesn't seem to fit an Modern F1 Car anymore.

Not even Hamilton or Schumacher did what he did in the junior series, Australia has a smaller population yes but we have such a fan big fan base of the sport, it’s also hard for some people. Australia is the size of USA pretty much. It’s a long way to get from one side to the other. I’ve always said 25 races a year is the max. We’re at 23. I don’t see a reason why we can’t have 2 in AUS
